Chapter 47: Wipe the Slate Clean – Xu Yinyu, I Will Never Let You Go in This Life…
The two arrived at Xu Yinyu’s villa.
Xu Yinyu lowered her head and opened the door. Yu Shujin entered without hesitation, taking on the posture of a proprietress.
One after the other, Xu Yinyu watched Yu Shujin’s surveying back from behind.
Yu Shujin’s mood upon returning to Xu Yinyu’s small villa was vastly different from before.
It was late autumn now. The flowers in the courtyard were withered, and leaves had fallen, but the vegetables were vibrant with green life.
Yu Shujin’s furrowed brow suddenly relaxed when she saw the lively green of the Chinese cabbage. “What are you eating tonight?”
Xu Yinyu had assumed Yu Shujin dragged her back to make things difficult for her.
But when they reached the garden, the pressure around Yu Shujin suddenly receded, and she even stopped to ask about dinner plans.
“There’s beef in the fridge. I’ll pull out two stalks of celery from the yard and make a beef and celery noodle dish,” Xu Yinyu answered truthfully.
“Good. I’ll accompany you,” Yu Shujin said.
Before Xu Yinyu could let out a breath of relief, Yu Shujin turned and said faintly, “After you finish this bowl of noodles, you’ll resign and come back to Country S with me.”
Xu Yinyu was unwilling to give up the career she had worked so hard to establish and become a mere shadow who could only follow Yu Shujin.
“I won’t,” Xu Yinyu’s voice was clear, without resentment or fragility. She tightly clenched her fists. “Yu Shujin, you should be clear about why I left you. And you should be clearest about why I won’t choose you again.”
Yu Shujin’s eyes darkened, the brief moment of calm vanishing.
Xu Yinyu leaned against the trellis in the garden, plucked a grape, and put it in her mouth. The sweet, cold grape juice spread in her mouth, allowing her to suppress the chaotic emotions in her heart bit by bit.
“You still like me,” Yu Shujin said. She was unwilling to sink back into past sorrow. In her mind, as long as Xu Yinyu was still by her side, and as long as Xu Yinyu still liked her, everything could start over, or rather, everything could be overthrown and reset.
This was a deep-seated belief and principle that Yu Shujin had always silently adhered to.
If Xu Yinyu still liked her, then there was still room for reconciliation between them.
“Like me?” Xu Yinyu found it amusing. “Yes, I still have some feelings for you, but those feelings can’t withstand your torment anymore, Yu Shujin.
No matter how intense or passionate the feelings, they can’t endure your torment. I can’t stand you.”
Yu Shujin’s forceful expression did not waver because of these words.
Although it was noon, the hottest time of the day, Xu Yinyu’s body was cold and rigid. But she had learned to disguise herself, deeply concealing her panic and fear beneath a facade of indifferent calm.
Yu Shujin suddenly took a step forward. Xu Yinyu subconsciously took a small step back. This retreating motion was like a tear opening in Xu Yinyu’s calm exterior, and also like a needle piercing Yu Shujin’s heart.
“Can’t stand me.” Yu Shujin stood still, giving a cold scoff. The gloomy oppression and coldness around her suddenly shattered and turned to dust with that laugh.
“Do you regret running into me again? Regret dating me? Do you even regret saving me, regret meeting me!” Yu Shujin spoke to herself, then abruptly looked at Xu Yinyu with bloodshot eyes, her mournful cry sounding like a cuckoo weeping blood.
Xu Yinyu’s body froze. She watched Yu Shujin approach her step by step, unable to move, a sharp dagger being forcefully placed in her hand.
“A-Yu, you can’t give up on someone you love.” Yu Shujin’s voice suddenly softened, with a strange gentleness. She held Xu Yinyu’s trembling hand, turning the blade so it pressed against Yu Shujin’s own heart.
Her gorgeous, elegant face was now as gloomy as a strangely beautiful female ghost. Enticement and tenderness fell together near Xu Yinyu’s ear.
Xu Yinyu’s eyes trembled. In that instant, tears fell from her eyes, hitting the sharp, cold blade, shimmering with a chilly light.
“I won’t let go of you,” Yu Shujin repeated over and over. “I will cling to you fiercely. As long as I live in this world for one day, I will never let you go.”
Xu Yinyu’s eyes were red. Her psychological defenses were already in disarray, and her mind was on the verge of collapse under Yu Shujin’s repeated provocations. She choked out, “Stop it, stop talking.”
She wanted to cover her ears.
But the lunatic Yu Shujin held her hands tightly, pressing them against her own heart.
“Xu Yinyu, I will never let you go in this life,” Yu Shujin told Xu Yinyu with obsession. “Whether you want it or not, whether you’re happy or not, I will think this way, and I will act this way, and I will never repent.”
“I am giving you a chance to leave me now,” Yu Shujin applied pressure. “Just stab it down. All our entanglement will end. Both of us will be free and liberated.”
Xu Yinyu’s eyes were filled with horror and fear. She shook her head frantically, struggling backward with all her might. Her mind was nearly broken. “Why must you force me? Even if I did wrong to you in the past, but…”
Her choked throat was blocked by sobs. Xu Yinyu gasped for air, struggling to continue speaking, “The later contract, the breach, the kidnapping, and the engagement—you clearly retaliated…”
“Yu Shujin… I didn’t even get to see my mother one last time.”
Xu Yinyu sobbed, speaking through blurred vision, over and over.
The dagger dropped from their hands. Xu Yinyu wiped away the moisture from her eyes. Her heart ached in spasms, as if the blood vessel connected to her heart’s beating had suddenly burst. Her emotions had passed their threshold; perhaps her heart would explode in the next second.
Xu Yinyu’s legs had long gone weak. Without Yu Shujin’s constraint, she wobbled uncontrollably. Yu Shujin gathered her into her arms, holding her tightly, gently patting her rigid back. “I know…”
Xu Yinyu didn’t understand what Yu Shujin knew.
She wanted to break free and tell Yu Shujin that she could bear the debts Xu Lianyue owed, but she didn’t want any connection with her anymore.
Xu Yinyu’s chin rested on Yu Shujin’s shoulder. Her chest was convulsing. She gasped for breath through her open mouth, accompanied by non-stop sobs.
“I really… I really don’t want to go back to you…”
Yu Shujin held her until Xu Yinyu was exhausted from crying and lost consciousness. Only then did she slowly lift her head, pick Xu Yinyu up in her arms, and look down at Xu Yinyu’s delicate face in the bright daylight.
The horror, panic, fear, and the past mess had already consumed too much of Xu Yinyu’s emotions and energy, revealing a fragility and sensitivity she wouldn’t have shown before.
The emotion in Yu Shujin’s eyes showed no pity at all, only pure infatuation.
She clearly knew that the person in her arms had become a porcelain object about to shatter, already broken and damaged, yet she still couldn’t bring herself to let go.
Yu Shujin carried her across to the master bedroom bed, using her fingertip to gently wipe away the tears on Xu Yinyu’s face.
Xu Yinyu’s eyelids fluttered but finally remained closed.
Yu Shujin stroked Xu Yinyu’s face, helped her take off her shoes, but when she tried to unbutton the constraints around her chest, her hand was caught.
Yu Shujin looked up, meeting Xu Yinyu’s open eyes, and whispered, “I won’t do anything you dislike now if you refuse.”
Too many incidents had already contradicted Yu Shujin’s words.
Xu Yinyu didn’t believe her. She shook her head at Yu Shujin. “Go away. Don’t bother my life anymore. I will slowly repay the debt from back then.”
Yu Shujin stood by the bed, her figure very rigid. She subdued the coldness and gloom around her, leaving only a woman’s most vivid vulnerability.
“I gave you a chance to escape me,” Yu Shujin refused to leave. “You already used it up.”
Xu Yinyu shook her head frantically. “What will you gain by keeping me trapped by your side? A stagnant pool of feelings. What good will your reckless intrusion do?”
Yu Shujin took a step back. She paused, thinking of the bitter look in her own mother’s eyes.
She hadn’t thought that one day she would see her mother’s shadow on Xu Yinyu.
A terrifying thought took root in her mind. Yu Shujin watched Xu Yinyu crawl toward her, her gaze fragile yet firm. “Shujin, we did have beautiful moments. Let me go. Let yourself go, too. Let these beautiful things stay in our memories. Let’s wipe the slate clean on everything, okay?”
This might be the best ending for them.
Forgetting the love and hatred that had become knotted between them, and parting ways.
Yu Shujin knew Xu Yinyu’s pain point better than anyone, which was why she dared to press Xu Yinyu’s knife against her own heart, blackmailing the other party with impunity, hoping to fight for a chance for herself within that moment.
But she clearly underestimated the pain Xu Yinyu felt toward herself.
That past might have become a hurdle Xu Yinyu could not cross.
Xu Yinyu had established herself in Country S, living independently. She had friends, and also admirers. Perhaps soon, she would start a brand new relationship.
Not a relationship with Yu Shujin.
A normal and healthy love life.
Yu Shujin’s expression changed. She forcefully suppressed the surging anger in her heart. “You rest first. I’ll go make you dinner.”
Xu Yinyu watched Yu Shujin’s retreating back, silently slumping where she was.
Is loving someone so painful?
Yu Shujin wiped the mist from her eyes. She awkwardly used Xu Yinyu’s kitchen.
After hearing three successive sounds of the kitchen exploding (“pi li pa la”), Xu Yinyu couldn’t sit still. She took the wok from Yu Shujin’s hand and quickly cooked two portions of plain fried noodles for them.
The beef had been ruined by Yu Shujin beyond salvaging. Xu Yinyu reluctantly threw it away, then took out two bottles of iced juice from the fridge.
Yu Shujin noticed, frowned, and seemed hesitant to speak, but finally opened her mouth to remind her, “I remember your period is due these days.”
Xu Yinyu’s hand froze as she twisted open the juice bottle. She retorted without guilt, “It’s not.”
Then she took a large gulp of the iced juice.
Yu Shujin’s face was extremely displeased. She snatched the rest of the juice from Xu Yinyu’s hand. “I’ll taste it.”
Xu Yinyu lifted an eyelid, put down her chopsticks, and pretended to casually reach for a new can of soda from the side of the table.
Just as her fingertip touched the cold can, her wrist was gripped by a warm hand.
“Don’t drink it. You’ll have period pain.”
