Chapter 41: A Toast – Memory Discrepancy
Chi Xia sent a text message to Yu Zhenmin with a sense of utter despair.
She couldn’t stop Yu Shujin at all.
Even a memory-blank Yu Shujin.
Yu Shujin’s gaze shifted from Xu Yinyu’s disappearing back, and the momentary tenderness she held suddenly turned icy.
“Contact HM Company again. Directly invest in their next quarter’s project,” Yu Shujin commanded calmly.
Chi Xia looked at her infatuated boss in disbelief, her face pale. “The head office doesn’t have that much liquid capital, President Yu. Please calm down.”
Yu Shujin’s expression darkened. “Do you think I’m acting impulsively?”
“I’ll give you an opportunity,” Yu Shujin took out the Shen Group contract and placed it in front of Chi Xia. “Assistant Chi, get Shen Nianyan to sign this. Not only will we have money to invest, but we can also acquire the entire HM Company.”
“Pie-in-the-sky fantasies are disgraceful when decorated with any words before they are realized.” Chi Xia opened the contract and saw that the terms set in this version were such that unless Shen Nianyan was abducted by aliens, even a lunatic wouldn’t sign it.
Yu Shujin lowered her head to scroll through Xu Yinyu’s Moments, only to find that she was someone who didn’t like to post.
A trace of disappointment crossed her heart.
Xu Yinyu was waiting for the company to issue her termination.
She was waiting for the company to fire her so she could collect an N+1 severance package, enough to support her rest for a period of time.
After finishing her work, Xu Yinyu only received the notifications that Zhou Yun and Alice had been fired.
She read the messages twice carefully, not seeing her own name, and felt slightly confused.
In the afternoon, Xu Yinyu applied another layer of medication to Victoria’s burns, then helped her downstairs, planning to send her home.
However, at the company entrance, beneath the scrolling screen, a tall woman in a long black trench coat over a high-necked creamy-white wool sweater stood with her hands in her pockets. Her long hair was clearly styled, falling neatly on both sides, making her look radiant.
Her features were superior and refined, with narrow phoenix eyes that hooked at the outer corners. Even without makeup, she was stunning amidst the light breeze.
Victoria let out an “Ah, oh” near Xu Yinyu’s ear.
Xu Yinyu only then reacted, pulling her gaze away, and warned Victoria softly, “Don’t talk nonsense.”
Victoria “Tsk-ed.” “You touched my wound, Xu.”
“Oh, oh.” Xu Yinyu quickly removed her hand from Victoria’s shoulder, sounding nervous. “Are you okay?”
Victoria forced herself to bear it. “Wish me luck, Xu. I don’t even want to listen to gossip right now. I just want to go home immediately.”
Xu Yinyu’s expression became serious. She quickly walked to the entrance, intending to call a car for Victoria.
The stunning woman at the door walked up to her, her eyes slightly dissatisfied. “Miss Xu,”
The person Xu Yinyu was deliberately ignoring had walked right up to her.
Xu Yinyu suddenly looked up. “You? Looking for me?”
Yu Shujin tucked one hand into her coat, nodding with a hint of grievance. “Didn’t we agree this morning that we would have a meal together?”
Xu Yinyu’s agreement had been purely out of courtesy and a desire to escape Yu Shujin’s sight. She hadn’t expected Yu Shujin to actually wait for her like this.
“I’m sorry, my colleague was injured because of me today, and I need to take care of her.”
Yu Shujin glanced at Victoria, who was leaning on Xu Yinyu, with a scrutinizing look. Her expression turned cold. “Is that so? I know a famous doctor. If you need it, I can arrange a hospitalization for you.”
Victoria: ?!
She just needed rest. How did this escalate to hospitalization?
Xu Yinyu awkwardly refused on Victoria’s behalf. “No need. We’ll just take a taxi home and rest.”
“You two?” Yu Shujin’s voice became cold. “Do you live together?”
Victoria’s legs felt weak, and her scalp tingled.
“We don’t live together, but we live nearby,” Xu Yinyu’s voice was flat, showing no emotional fluctuation. “President Yu, let’s meet again if fate allows.”
After speaking, Xu Yinyu waved down a taxi and helped Victoria inside.
Yu Shujin watched Xu Yinyu deliberately distance herself.
The reason was so obvious and clumsy.
Her behavior wasn’t like that of strangers interacting.
And there was that intense emotion that spontaneously surged within her own body at first sight.
Yu Shujin vaguely sensed an unclear truth fleetingly cross her mind.
“Chi Xia, book me a ticket back,” Yu Shujin said coldly.
Xu Ruoying was supposed to be enjoying a lovely vacation with Xu Lianyue in Sanya, but a phone call from Yu Shujin forced her to come to City A to face Yu Shujin’s cold and indifferent face.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Ruoying’s voice was resentful.
“I feel like there’s something wrong with my memory,” Yu Shujin said slowly. “I recently met someone, and the moment I saw her, I felt she belonged to me.
I feel like she’s an inseparable part of my body.”
Xu Ruoying scratched her head. “Are you hallucinating from overwork? Maybe take a short vacation to adjust.”
“No,” Yu Shujin insisted, her eyes growing increasingly cold. “My memory of the car accident two years ago has always been vague, but I chose to trust Grandma and all of you back then.”
Xu Ruoying knew that given Yu Shujin’s sharp intuition and observation skills, they couldn’t conceal the truth forever.
“What do you want to say?”
“Was my memory deliberately tampered with?” Yu Shujin asked.
A pair of dark, deep eyes stared into Xu Ruoying’s.
“You,” Xu Ruoying looked down, shifting the blame. “You should ask the Matriarch of the Yu family about this sort of thing.”
Yu Shujin sneered. “It’s impossible that you weren’t involved, Xu Ruoying.”
Xu Ruoying’s expression froze, and she twitched her lips. “Well, go ahead and ask.”
Yu Shujin dropped her smile and asked Xu Ruoying about the reason for her memory discrepancy and potential treatment methods.
“The fastest way to recover is electrotherapy, but the risk is also extremely high. It could have a huge negative impact on your judgment and agility.
I don’t recommend it,” Xu Ruoying said.
Yu Shujin’s expression was calm. “Help me book a psychological electrotherapy team for next Friday.”
Xu Ruoying: ??!
Xu Yinyu didn’t receive a termination notice from the company. Instead, she was appointed as the project manager for the second quarter and selected as the team leader, doubling her salary.
She immediately hosted a celebration dinner for her team, booking a private room at a high-end restaurant.
Victoria gave Xu Yinyu a displeased look. She whispered, “There’s no need to treat this bunch of onlookers to a meal.”
Xu Yinyu smiled. “I’m just so happy. This is a pleasant surprise for me. I’m willing to splurge.”
Victoria’s burns had healed. She habitually linked arms with Xu Yinyu. “Then you can prepare a nice gift for me.”
Xu Yinyu smiled indulgently, rubbing Victoria’s nose with her finger. “Honestly, would I ever skimp on your gift?”
Victoria happily snuggled into Xu Yinyu’s arms.
The intimate and ambiguous actions of the two fell into the eyes of another person.
Xu Yinyu felt an unsettling sensation of being watched.
She abruptly looked up and glanced outside but only saw several dark cars.
“Let’s go, Victoria. You have to eat enough to cover the cost for me,” Xu Yinyu said.
“That’s for sure,” Victoria replied cheerfully.
The burning gaze did not diminish in the slightest as Xu Yinyu walked away.
Xu Yinyu’s figure gradually shrank, turning a corner and disappearing from Yu Shujin’s sight.
Yu Shujin got out of the car, closed the door, and walked into the private room adjacent to Xu Yinyu’s.
Chi Xia also arrived shortly after, entering Yu Shujin’s private room to hand her work files.
The room was quiet and cold.
Meanwhile, in Xu Yinyu’s private room, many people were eager to strengthen their relationship with her. No one wanted to be treated poorly by the future leader, especially Lina, whose relationship with Zhou Yun once seemed close.
Since Xu Yinyu’s appointment, Lina had been uneasy, having several nightmares, fearing that Xu Yinyu would seize on her past mistakes and fire her from the company.
Xu Yinyu sipped the carbonated drink in her glass, still contemplating the project’s progress. Her second-quarter project proposal had been approved. The next step was to allocate tasks according to the schedule and workload, proceeding gradually. This time, she was determined to express her original idea fully.
The glass lamp at that completion dinner and the lamps in this private room looked similar.
But times had changed. She was no longer the insignificant cannon fodder to be manipulated at will.
Lina walked over with a glass of wine. “Xu, I’d like to propose a toast to you.”
Xu Yinyu looked up, rose slightly, and nodded. After seeing Lina drink a glass of the beverage, she took a small sip of her own and reminded her, “Drinking too much at night makes you visit the restroom frequently, Lina.”
Victoria stifled a laugh nearby. “Yes, Lina, aren’t you trying to lose weight?”
The doctor chimed in, supporting Victoria. “Drinking too many sugary drinks can also make you fat.”
Lina blushed. She exchanged a few more words with Xu Yinyu before hastily leaving. Victoria threw herself into Xu Yinyu’s arms. “That was so funny, Lina. She looked so cute with her face flushed.”
Xu Yinyu patted her shoulder. “Don’t tease others so casually. It can cause friction.”
Xu Yinyu put down her soda and stood up. Victoria looked at her, asking, “What are you doing?”
Xu Yinyu said, “Going to the restroom.”
Victoria looked at her intensely.
Xu Yinyu ignored her nervous behavior and went straight to the front desk to settle the bill in advance, but the receptionist told her that the fee for their private room had already been paid.
Xu Yinyu confirmed with the front desk repeatedly; she clearly hadn’t paid.
But the receptionist was certain that a tall, beautiful Chinese person had paid for her.
Xu Yinyu realized the person who paid for her was Yu Shujin.
Her emotions churned, a mix of feelings washing over her.
Xu Yinyu wanted to calm down, but she encountered Yu Shujin face-to-face on her way back to the private room.
Only this time, she couldn’t pretend not to see her.
