Chapter 39: Love at First Sight – Reunion with an Old Acquaintance
Xu Yinyu’s heart was like boiling, scorching water.
Only one question remained in her mind: How did Yu Shujin suddenly appear in Country S?
When Yu Shujin suffered a car accident and fell into a coma, Yu Zhenmin interfered with her memory during her period of confusion, sealing and concealing all memories related to Xu Yinyu.
Xu Yinyu, in order to avoid the Yu family, had no choice but to completely leave her homeland and seek a living abroad.
The fear of being unable to choose for herself due to her excessive weakness—once, twice, three times—emerged from her timid core, like a parasite attached to the bone, as soon as Yu Shujin appeared.
Inside the bar, the lighting was dazzling and beautiful. Xu Yinyu stood with her back to Yu Shujin, gripping Victoria’s hand with a force that far exceeded the normal threshold. When they finally stopped, she saw Victoria’s flushed face. “Xu, are you settling a personal score?”
Victoria only realized, under the light, that Xu Yinyu’s face was as pale as paper. The temperature of her hand had suddenly dropped, as if she had seen something or someone extremely terrifying.
Xu Yinyu apologized to her and immediately hid herself in the darkest corner of the bar.
Victoria had never seen Xu Yinyu so distraught. Her eyes showed worry and concern. She asked, “Are you feeling unwell? Should I take you home or directly to the hospital?”
Xu Yinyu’s eyes trembled violently, seemingly having seen something. Her body visibly stiffened. She subconsciously took a step back, but due to excessive panic, her legs were already weak. This sudden movement suggested she was about to fall.
Victoria subconsciously tried to steady Xu Yinyu’s retreating waist, but another person beat her to it.
“Miss, be careful.” Yu Shujin wore a black trench coat over a delicate and luxurious suit. Her straight black hair hung down over the white pearl buttons on her chest.
Yu Shujin was a masterpiece meticulously refined by time. Time had left no flaws on her. Two years of polish made her look even more radiant, and her aura of pressure was sharper than before.
Xu Yinyu instinctively avoided eye contact. She thanked her in the manner one would address a stranger, intending to let the moment pass.
“Are you Chinese?” Yu Shujin’s expression remained unchanged. She withdrew her hand, acting as naturally as if recognizing a fellow countryman.
Xu Yinyu nodded. “There are quite a few Chinese people working here. Are you also here for work?”
“Yes,” Yu Shujin nodded. She looked Xu Yinyu up and down, pressing her tongue against her jaw. “Are you all from the same company?”
Victoria’s eyes widened when she saw Yu Shujin. She felt increasingly that Yu Shujin’s face was somehow familiar. Moreover, the integration between Yu Shujin and Xu Yinyu made it impossible for anyone else to interject.
Xu Yinyu nodded, her face cold. “We need to go meet up with our other colleagues.”
Yu Shujin gave a simple “Mhm,” with no strange reaction.
Xu Yinyu, conversely, took an extra look at her, and at Chi Xia, who was trembling behind her.
A memory flashed in Victoria’s mind. She suddenly remembered a wedding video, and abruptly turned to look at Yu Shujin.
The woman who walked Xu Yinyu down the aisle was none other than the woman in front of her, who seemingly didn’t remember Xu Yinyu at all!
Before Victoria could question Xu Yinyu, she was pulled far away.
Xu Yinyu stopped and sat in another corner, using the dark night to cover her tumultuous inner world.
“That person just now, she looks a lot like your wife,” Victoria whispered.
Xu Yinyu was suddenly shaken by the word “wife,” causing her legs to tremble.
“I don’t know her,” Xu Yinyu replied.
Victoria exclaimed “Ah,” doubting her own memory. “Then maybe I misremembered.”
She scratched her head and murmured, “But that’s not right. Someone as outstanding as her, with that kind of unforgettable beauty—it must be her, Xu.”
Xu Yinyu took a big gulp of plain water from her thermos. “There are plenty of people who look alike in the world.”
Victoria lowered her eyes, twitching her lips, displaying a helpless, speechless expression.
“You have a story, Xu,” Victoria’s gossipy look became more fervent, her gaze on Xu Yinyu growing hotter.
“Victoria, my head hurts too much. Please tell Zhou Yun for me that I have to leave early,” Xu Yinyu rubbed her eyes and brows, feeling unusually agitated.
She had a vague, uneasy premonition that her peaceful life was about to be shattered.
Although Victoria really wanted to gossip, she knew about Xu Yinyu’s physical condition and readily agreed. “Do you need me to accompany you to the hospital?”
Xu Yinyu slung her canvas bag over her shoulder, tossing out a cold and resolute reply. “No need.”
She left Victoria with a tragic silhouette and a confusing sense of mystery.
Chi Xia tentatively asked, “Boss Yu, why were you so proactive in talking to a stranger?”
Yu Shujin’s gaze slowly shifted to Chi Xia, opening her mouth to directly hit Chi Xia’s sore spot. “Do you believe in love at first sight?”
Her voice was very light, yet in the loud, bustling bar, it carried a preposterous sense of seriousness.
Chi Xia’s heart sank. “Perhaps it’s a feeling of instant familiarity.”
A hint of obscurity flashed in Yu Shujin’s eyes. She held a crystal glass containing expensive vintage wine in her hand, her fingertips resting against the side of the glass. Her knuckles were sharp, and pale blue veins were faintly visible beneath the cool, white skin. She gently swirled the glass, creating a delicate, almost inaudible sound.
All the emotions, all the doubts, and the initial desire she felt were settled as the Romanée-Conti swirled and subsided.
The light lingered and shifted.
On the other side, Zhou Yun, holding a stemmed glass, sat lazily on the booth sofa. As she saw Xu Yinyu stand up to leave, a calculating glint flashed in her otherwise calm expression.
Xu Yinyu walked out of the bar. The clear, slightly cool night air rushed in. She instinctively relaxed her body and pulled out her phone, intending to call a ride directly home.
Two men who had come out for a smoke stood near the bar entrance. Since Xu Yinyu emerged, their eyes had been fixed on her, their expressions lewd and predatory.
One of them even called out to Xu Yinyu, “Hey, beautiful, aren’t you cold all by yourself?”
Xu Yinyu dodged, one hand reaching into her canvas bag. She stared unblinkingly at the two tall, strong men slowly approaching her, her body tensed in a fight-or-flight posture.
Xu Yinyu was not provoked by their words. She quickly assessed the situation around her and checked for backup behind them.
She quickly retreated back into the bar. Her heart pounded chaotically, and her legs trembled, forcing her to lean against the wall to keep from collapsing.
Before Xu Yinyu could compose herself, a hand easily settled on her, pressing her against a warm, pleasant-smelling body. Her inner defenses relaxed in that instant.
She was helped by Yu Shujin to the booth sofa. Cold sweat was now dripping from her forehead.
Xu Yinyu hugged herself, shaken by the scare. After calming down, she looked up and sincerely thanked Yu Shujin.
“Thank you, Yu… Miss.”
Xu Yinyu instantly reacted in her daze, concealing the name of her old acquaintance.
But Yu Shujin’s eyes had subtly narrowed, her expression unfathomably deep.
“Miss Yu? How does Miss know my surname is Yu?”
Xu Yinyu responded like a top student recalling a test answer. “Because I used to be a fan of Miss Yu and really liked your dramas.”
“Is that so? I didn’t expect to meet a fan of mine in a foreign country. What a coincidence,” Yu Shujin smiled slightly. She then asked, “I still don’t know your name…”
Xu Yinyu lowered her head, initially intending to give a false name, but seeing Chi Xia’s furrowed brow, her heart faltered. She decided to tell the person in front of her her real name.
“Xu Yinyu.”
Yu Shujin repeated it, rubbing the name between her lips and teeth. “Xu Yinyu, A-Yu.”
A person’s inherent habit, driven to the core, could still utter that familiar, soul-piercing address even amidst a blank memory.
“A-Yu, let me drive you back. It’s dark, and it’s hard to catch a taxi,” Yu Shujin’s voice, spanning the gap of time, fell into Xu Yinyu’s ear as clear as yesterday.
She suddenly looked up, meeting Yu Shujin’s gentle gaze. “No, no need. My ride is almost here.”
A flicker of gloom crossed Yu Shujin’s eyes, quickly hidden. Her lips curved, but there was no smile in her eyes. “Is that so? Alright.”
“Then be careful.”
Xu Yinyu saw the call from the ride-share driver, quickly called back, and hurried off.
Yu Shujin finished the remaining Romanée-Conti. The gentle pretense on her body was gone, replaced only by impatient pressure. She instructed Chi Xia, “I don’t want to see those two men again.”
The suppression in her heart was amplified by the alcohol. A pale, familiar face suddenly flashed in her mind, but it quickly vanished, like winter snow meeting spring.
Chi Xia felt relieved, responded, and was about to sigh in relief.
“Why do I feel like you’re more nervous coming to the bar today than following me to a negotiation?” Yu Shujin’s scrutinizing gaze swept over Chi Xia.
Chi Xia’s eyes momentarily froze and went blank. “How could that be, Boss Yu? I’m on my period today, and I don’t feel well.”
Yu Shujin curved her lips into a smile. “That better be the case, Chi Xia. I don’t want my chief assistant to act against my will for someone else.”
Chi Xia suddenly felt a cold chill on her neck. She swallowed, hoping to quickly conclude this business trip and return home as soon as possible, avoiding Xu Yinyu, who was like a ticking time bomb.
Xu Yinyu returned home, her mind in chaos. She was unsure whether Yu Shujin had amnesia.
If she had amnesia, why would she proactively help her twice?
But if she hadn’t lost her memory, why would Yu Shujin’s expression toward her be so gentle and calm?
Xu Yinyu’s peaceful life was disrupted by Yu Shujin’s sudden appearance, triggering a series of tidal reactions.
The night moon was bright, illuminating many dark corners.
On her way to work the next day, Xu Yinyu’s left eyelid twitched violently. Her heart raced, and she was almost hit by a scooter while walking. Upon reaching the company, she felt utterly unlucky that she would encounter Yu Shujin again.
Chi Xia was even more shocked than she was.
HM Comics Company was one of the most well-known in the world. Their secondary goal for this trip to Country S was to invest in HM’s comics, using it as a springboard into the domestic entertainment industry.
She had never expected Xu Yinyu to enter this top comics company in just two short years.
Yu Shujin had just finished communicating with the CEO of HM. She was still thinking about Xu Yinyu when her eyes lit up, and the person unexpectedly appeared right in front of her.
It felt like a destined fate bringing them together in this foreign land.
Xu Yinyu let out an “Ah, oh,” her eyes blank, blinking sleepily.
Chi Xia watched Xu Yinyu with internal resentment, believing she was using every trick in the book to lure in the easily confused Boss Yu Shujin.
Yu Shujin’s previously distant face instantly softened with the tenderness of a spring breeze. “A-Yu, what a coincidence. Are you an employee of this company?”
Xu Yinyu suddenly snapped back to attention, rambling, “Yes, Miss Yu. We have a lot of work here. My boss often watches us work and doesn’t allow chatting around. I still need to clock in. If I run into Miss Yu again, I’ll treat Miss Yu to a meal.”
Yu Shujin succinctly extracted the key points from her lengthy sentences.
Yu Shujin smiled. “Sounds good. Let’s exchange contact information so we can easily get in touch later.”
Chi Xia’s chest rose and fell continuously. Her eyes were locked on Xu Yinyu, the anger in them almost turning into tangible fury.
Xu Yinyu realized she was digging her own grave. She met Chi Xia’s gaze behind Yu Shujin—that look of hatred wanting to devour her made her feel like she had needles in her back.
But facing Yu Shujin’s expectant eyes, Xu Yinyu had no reason to refuse. She could only smile stiffly and exchange contact information with Yu Shujin.
“Alright, I have to go clock in now,” Xu Yinyu said, clutching her canvas bag and running off.
Yu Shujin lingered, savoring the subtle touch she felt on her fingertips when Xu Yinyu unintentionally grazed them while operating her phone.
Yu Shujin saw the other’s seemingly fleeing back and pressed her tongue against her jaw.
When you fall for someone, how do you successfully win them over?
