Chapter 38: Reunion – A Flutter of Butterflies
Xu Yinyu finished her day’s work and glanced sideways at the sunset glow about to fade as she walked out of the company.
“Xu, fancy the bar?” Zhou Yun, a Chinese colleague, patted Xu Yinyu’s shoulder.
Zhou Yun was an employee transferred from the company headquarters, rumored to be Alice’s replacement.
Xu Yinyu lowered her head, intending to refuse, but her colleagues behind pushed her forward.
“Come on, come on! Take a little break. Anyway, there’s nothing to do at home at this hour,” Lina’s cheerful voice came from behind, completely free of scheming or ambition.
“There are several beautiful singers performing at the bar. If there are VIPs, we might even see some great dancing.”
Xu Yinyu was not interested in any of this. She just wanted to go home, lie on her soft bed, and soothe her body tired from the day’s labor. She planned to follow them in, take a quick look, and then sneak away.
Xu Yinyu smoothed her wrinkled shirt. She adjusted her glasses, pushing them back to rest securely. The silver frames hooked onto her small ear tips, the delicate metal lines slightly narrowing along the contours of her face.
The sunset light fell upon her, radiating a sense of coolness.
Xu Yinyu took long strides. Her tied-up ponytail constantly swayed with each step. Victoria walked up beside Xu Yinyu, whispered two sentences, and became visibly delighted.
After Xu Yinyu clearly rejected her, she and Victoria actually developed a good friendship.
The two often saw each other at the company. Xu Yinyu would share her extra cooked meals with Victoria, and Victoria would occasionally buy groceries to visit, enjoying Xu Yinyu’s hospitality.
“Xu, I heard the team leader say that the project manager for the next quarter will still be between you and Zhou Yun,” Victoria said in a hushed, almost whispered tone.
“Oh.” Xu Yinyu remained completely unperturbed. She had been tormented by high-intensity, busy work to the point of losing her career ambition.
“Aren’t you anxious?” Victoria didn’t understand.
“Just let nature take its course. This isn’t something I can rush,” Xu Yinyu rubbed her aching brow, remembering what Alice told her this morning.
‘Xu, in work, ability is often not the first deciding factor. I know you work hard and are very capable, but the selection of the next quarter’s project manager has already been reserved by the headquarters.’
Xu Yinyu slowly calmed her emotions. She had witnessed too much unseemly life while stuck in the mud.
“You really can’t draw a conclusion until the end, but Xu, I support you,” Victoria murmured secretively.
Hearing Victoria’s serious voice, Xu Yinyu couldn’t help but smile slightly. “You’re siding with the small cake and braised pork, aren’t you?”
Victoria’s face flushed. She moved her lips, wanting to say something.
Xu Yinyu’s lips were still curved in a smile, her cool, delicate face suddenly glowing. As she walked with Victoria toward the bar entrance, she saw a group of figures so familiar they made her legs weak. The smile on her face instantly froze like hardened frost, with a faint, visible crack.
The bright lights of the bar couldn’t dispel the deepening coldness of the night.
Xu Yinyu quickened her pace, hurriedly pulling Victoria along. Her attempt to avoid the incoming group was obvious.
Yu Shujin, who had been looking down, caught a familiar scent in the air.
It wasn’t the perfume she had smelled before.
It was that feeling that once touched her soul.
She slowly raised her head, her dark eyes like the vertical pupils of a giant python. After scanning the prey in her territory, her gaze settled on a slender, resilient figure’s back.
That piece of slender, white wrist.
In Yu Shujin’s strange memory of a familiar sensation.
Like the hazy silhouette left behind by a sudden flutter of ten thousand butterflies passing through.
