Chapter 29: Mistake After Mistake – “You Don’t Need Me?”
Xu Yinyu was completely mesmerized.
It wasn’t until Yu Shujin changed into the black suit that she snapped out of her daze and complimented her, “When you wear black, you look severe, like a mafia boss.”
Yu Shujin gave two cold laughs. “Good. I’m the boss. I’ll just snatch you home today.”
“You look even more like it when you laugh,” Xu Yinyu continued her praise.
Yu Shujin narrowed her eyes, lifted her jaw slightly, and placed a white suit of the exact same style beside Xu Yinyu. “Say that one more time, and I’ll gouge out your eyeballs. Change your clothes.”
Xu Yinyu exclaimed, “Ah, I don’t need to. I’m just going to an art exhibition.”
“Then go wear the clothes that smell like alcohol from yesterday,” Yu Shujin said, her eyes half-lidded, not indulging Xu Yinyu’s affectation. She glanced at her wristwatch and urged, “Hurry up, we’ll miss the plane if you’re late.”
Hearing the urgency of catching a flight, Xu Yinyu quickly moved. After changing, she instinctively checked herself in the full-length mirror.
She took one look and couldn’t help but be astonished.
The woman in the mirror, encased in the white custom suit, was impeccably tailored, especially at the waist, which was sharply cinched, making her waist appear tiny, and her shoulder line defined.
Yu Shujin lifted her hand to Xu Yinyu’s cuff, fastening it with the other pearl cufflink. She even deliberately crouched down to put on Xu Yinyu’s mid-to-low-heeled pointed shoes, which she had specially procured for her from abroad.
Yu Shujin herself was a high-heel enthusiast. Her shoe cabinet contained all sorts of high heels; whether for casual wear or business, she habitually wore them.
However, during her first week of cohabitation with Xu Yinyu, she noticed that Xu Yinyu would immediately change into flats whenever she rested, often rubbing her aching ankles.
Realizing this, Yu Shujin specially customized a batch of mid-to-low-heeled pointed leather shoes from abroad for Xu Yinyu to wear when going out for work or other activities, and prepared athletic and casual shoes for everyday wear.
Xu Yinyu’s eyes trembled, and her voice wavered. “You, why are you crouching to put on my shoes? I can do this myself.”
“Silly,” Yu Shujin teased. “Of course I know you can. I want to help you put on your shoes.”
Xu Yinyu, for the first time by someone other than her mother, was held by the ankle while having her shoes put on. Her face flushed. She awkwardly pushed Yu Shujin away. “This is too weird.”
“We’re lovers, A-Yu. Nothing is too intimate,” Yu Shujin explained, the end of her sentence tinged with a smile.
After putting on Xu Yinyu’s shoes, Yu Shujin helped her put on a beautiful necklace and an exquisite wristwatch.
“I’m taking you on my private jet.” Yu Shujin was satisfied with Xu Yinyu’s current appearance, feeling a great sense of achievement. Finally, she applied a little lipstick for A-Yu, which added a sharpness and cold glamour to her delicate, pale face.
Before Xu Yinyu could fully process the words “private jet,” she was pulled into the sedan.
Yu Shujin was restless everywhere. Xu Yinyu intended to catch up on sleep in the car, but Yu Shujin kept touching her.
Xu Yinyu opened her eyes and abruptly grabbed Yu Shujin’s wandering hand. “Haven’t you touched enough?”
“Nope,” Yu Shujin was practically leaning on her, her tone becoming increasingly rogue. “The way you’re dressed is as tempting as when you wore a sailor uniform in front of me as a child. What should I do?”
Xu Yinyu cut her off with two words: “Chill out.”
A fox-like cunning flashed in Yu Shujin’s eyes. “No. You need to promise me compensation.”
Xu Yinyu hesitated. “What kind of compensation do you want?”
“Say you like me,” Yu Shujin whispered.
Xu Yinyu paused.
Yu Shujin thought Xu Yinyu hadn’t heard and raised her voice slightly, urging, “Say you like me.”
Xu Yinyu cupped Yu Shujin’s face, mimicking her, and responded, “I like you.”
Afterward, she reached for Yu Shujin’s lips.
Yu Shujin felt the other’s clumsy, stiff initiative. While secretly delighted, she gently responded to her advance. Outside the car, the floodwaters flowed in reverse, and inside, the atmosphere was thick with ambiguity. The privacy screen had become an everyday fixture for them.
When Xu Yinyu wanted to stop, Yu Shujin’s interest was just piqued.
Yu Shujin pressed her advantage, gripping Xu Yinyu’s shoulders, closing the distance between them, and kissing her deeper and more intensely.
Xu Yinyu pushed against Yu Shujin’s shoulder, finally managing to push her away with the last effort. She tried to create some distance, but Yu Shujin immediately pulled her onto her shoulder, an impatient voice falling into her ear. “Why are you running?”
Xu Yinyu’s body trembled momentarily at the rebuke. She glanced at Yu Shujin’s expression.
Their gazes crossed and overlapped.
Xu Yinyu said discontentedly, “You always do this. I don’t like it. I showed I didn’t want to, yet you were still too much.”
“Weren’t you enjoying it?” Yu Shujin disapproved of Xu Yinyu’s attitude of denying everything once she was dressed.
“You’re overthinking it. When I want to refuse you, I will struggle. That’s a human instinct for self-preservation,” Xu Yinyu seriously communicated her thoughts.
Yu Shujin nodded dismissively, then reapplied Xu Yinyu’s smudged lipstick. “I got it.”
Xu Yinyu looked at those eyes, which showed no sign of remorse. The displeasure in her heart sank like a stone into the ocean of disappointment.
“You didn’t listen.”
Yu Shujin frowned. “I said I got it. Why are you still clinging to such trivial matters of intimacy?”
“Because I didn’t feel it. I didn’t feel your respect for me,” Xu Yinyu voiced the long-buried unhappiness in her heart, hoping for a change.
Yu Shujin’s expression was first momentarily confused, then it masked itself. She pulled Xu Yinyu into her embrace and looked up at her.
“Where do you feel I haven’t respected you? Just because I’m too active?”
“It’s not just this. Many decisions here have been made by you for me,” Xu Yinyu told her seriously.
“Like going to the art exhibition today.”
Yu Shujin didn’t understand. “But isn’t going to the art exhibition something you like? I’m helping you do something you like. Do you still feel I’m disrespecting you?”
Xu Yinyu covered Yu Shujin’s mouth with her hand. “I can appreciate the affection when you prepare surprises for me, but what if I don’t like this painter anymore, as much as I used to? What would we do then?”
Yu Shujin grabbed Xu Yinyu’s wrist and stated clearly, “Then you’ll stay by my side.”
Xu Yinyu covered her eyes, giving a bitter smile. “Can’t I go see my mother? Can’t I take a break?”
Yu Shujin frowned. “But we’ve already set out.”
“Then next time we have a holiday, when you plan the itinerary, could you ask for my thoughts beforehand?” Xu Yinyu removed her hand and looked at Yu Shujin.
“Of course,” Yu Shujin agreed readily. She didn’t want Xu Yinyu to have any visible negative emotions during this trip. It was just a simple question; what reason did she have not to humor her?
Xu Yinyu saw the ease in Yu Shujin’s expression. She struggled to pull herself away from Yu Shujin.
Yu Shujin pulled her back, a hint of impatience in her tone. “Didn’t I agree? Why are you still angry?”
“You don’t genuinely agree with what I said. In your eyes, I’m nothing more than a toy you can manipulate. As long as I rely on you for a day, you won’t change your mind,” Xu Yinyu said, somewhat angrily.
In the past, Xu Yinyu would never have dared to say these words.
Because Yu Shujin’s marriage agreement was still vividly fresh in her memory. But after feeling Yu Shujin’s sincerity, her heart couldn’t help but crave more.
She wanted to stop being seen as a mistress living off Yu Shujin.
She wanted to face her own deserved hardships, and even if it meant bearing heavy burdens, she wanted an equal relationship with Yu Shujin.
Otherwise, their relationship, built upon gratitude and guilt, would sooner or later veer onto a crooked path.
Xu Yinyu anticipated that the two of them would eventually do things that caused mutual hatred. Therefore, she wanted to prevent it in advance. She voiced the needs she wouldn’t have expressed before, hoping to be seen and understood by Yu Shujin.
But the eyes of someone in a position of power have been obscured for too long by the constant deference of everyone below them.
She had become accustomed to ignoring the ordinary needs of those beneath her.
Yu Shujin’s reaction was particularly strong.
She pinned Xu Yinyu in her arms. “What nonsense are you talking, A-Yu? When did I ever say you rely on me or that you are my toy? You are being overly sentimental.”
Disappointment flashed in Xu Yinyu’s eyes. She lowered her voice. “You say I’m sentimental, but have you ever given me a choice? Do you dare to give me a chance to choose for myself right now?”
Yu Shujin fell silent, and the atmosphere in the car abruptly shifted.
“You don’t dare, because deep down, you think I won’t choose you,” Xu Yinyu retorted angrily.
“That’s because you’ve never chosen me,” Yu Shujin gripped Xu Yinyu’s face. “Have you ever given me a single moment of trust or reliance?”
Her eyes revealed her underlying sinister paranoia.
Xu Yinyu was captured by Yu Shujin’s gaze.
“You know exactly what I want. Have you ever given it to me?” Yu Shujin’s voice grew colder.
“Why should I give it to you?” Xu Yinyu struggled to push Yu Shujin’s hand away. “You forced me to sign that so-called marriage agreement from the start, stripped me of my autonomy, confined me in the villa, hired a bunch of bodyguards to watch and monitor me, and forced me to give myself to you.”
“Why should I trample on myself just to satisfy your so-called desires?”
Xu Yinyu’s words were like a Sword of Damocles, tearing apart the veneer of peace they had maintained throughout this period.
Hanging, but finally resolved.
Flames of anger erupted in Yu Shujin’s eyes. “Wasn’t that what you wanted? Of all the things I forced you to do, wasn’t every single one something you desperately wanted but couldn’t obtain on your own?”
“Yes,” Xu Yinyu admitted, her eyes red, wanting to completely tear away all the superficial comfort.
“Both this period of privileged life and my mother’s careful treatment were what I wanted most back then, but I never intended for you to pay for all of it from the very beginning.”
“You don’t need me?” Yu Shujin suddenly grabbed her shirt collar and pulled it tight. “Who gave you that confidence?”
Xu Yinyu struggled, feeling uncomfortable. “You always assume that—that I’m weak, that I must rely on you. I want to stand with you, but not always be dependent on your whim.”
But their reunion was wrong from the very beginning.
Mistake after mistake.
It wasn’t until today, when they both cared for each other the most, that Xu Yinyu laid their relationship bare, forcing Yu Shujin to see her stance.
But how could a relationship built on unequal footing change its fundamental nature just because of a few genuine emotions?
Xu Yinyu’s initial desire to rely on Yu Shujin’s obsessive love to elevate her lower status in the relationship, thereby achieving equality, destined this relationship for a tragic end.
