After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 89
An Yu didn’t know what Lin Duxi had been through before. She had always assumed that Lin Duxi had lived her life entirely in the orphanage, and only in recent days had she learned about those despicable relatives.
All of An Yu’s earlier feelings of guilt were replaced by anger. The person she cared about deeply had been tossed around carelessly, nearly losing her life. Just listening to Lin Duxi’s calm recounting made her heart ache like a knife twisting inside her. She didn’t dare think too deeply.
But Lin Duxi’s gaze was so clear, like an icy lake melting just for her. The spring water that flowed into her heart brushed against her wounds.
It should have been Lin Duxi who was heartbroken, but instead, it was An Yu who wept, tears like spring rain.
An Yu sniffed lightly and lifted her hand to hold Lin Duxi’s.
“I’ll make sure they get what they deserve.”
Lin Duxi smiled gently and leaned down to kiss the corner of An Yu’s eye, feeling her trembling eyelashes, her heart unexpectedly sinking.
“Okay, I believe you, An Yu,” she said, her voice slightly hoarse.
They sat silently for a while, their hands tightly intertwined.
Lin Duxi sensed that An Yu’s emotions were gradually stabilizing, and then continued.
“Today, that man’s wife sent someone to contact me.”
An Yu: “Zhao Su Nan.”
Lin Duxi nodded.
An Yu: “When I was at the orphanage, I saw photos of her volunteering there.”
Lin Duxi: “After I got into the orphanage, she somehow found out I was there and would come to volunteer from time to time, all the way until I graduated high school.” She tilted her head toward An Yu, her beautiful eyes shining with broken light.
An Yu was speechless. She had already learned some of the events that happened after Lin Duxi graduated from the orphanage through the director and Xiao Xiaoxiao, enough to roughly piece together the causes and consequences. That alone made her heart ache; she couldn’t imagine how painful Lin Duxi’s true experiences must have been.
“I’m sorry.” All the words she wanted to say were stuck in her throat. She didn’t know how to make Lin Duxi less heartbroken. “I’m sorry you had to go through all this alone.”
She felt guilty. If she had noticed Lin Duxi’s state back then and seen the countless scars hidden behind her hard exterior, perhaps they wouldn’t have broken up… perhaps…
An Yu lowered her head, her eyes red, her nose tinged with a rawness.
Young people often focus only on the surface, unable to see the unspoken love hidden within.
A soft sigh sounded in her ear, and then her cheek was gently cupped. She lifted her head to see Lin Duxi smiling at her, shaking her head.
“I’m already happy just being here with you, An Yu.”
Even when facing a future of darkness, with no hope in sight, she could still regain the love she had lost—this was already a huge blessing.
Besides, she had already lived through it once.
“An Yu, don’t cry. Your eyes will swell tomorrow, and the netizens will laugh at you again.”
An Yu wiped away her tears with her hand. “I’m not crying.”
Lin Duxi smiled. “Good, An Yu isn’t crying.”
Her lingering voice, like a thread, drifted straight into An Yu’s ear. An Yu could barely withstand such gentleness, her ears hidden in her hair already turning red.
“You continue, what did Zhao Su Nan say to your people?” she asked, clearing her throat and forcing the topic back.
Seeing the tips of An Yu’s ears blush through her hair, Lin Duxi understood that she was no longer dwelling on the earlier sadness and wisely stopped teasing her. Even a cornered rabbit can bite.
“Zhao Su Nan had been trying to contact me before, so I sent my bodyguards to deal with her secretly. Lin Yongfeng and his father tried to get money from me several times and failed. Zhao Su Nan said they were desperate this time and wanted to use you to force me to pay.”
When Lin Duxi mentioned An Yu, her tone changed sharply, her voice icy.
“Lin Yongfeng said that his father was supporting his brother, and I… because his dad made Lin Yongfeng quit school to pay for Lin Chengzhou’s schooling, he feels Lin Chengzhou’s family owes him. That man died in the fire; he couldn’t get the money, so he came to me.”
An Yu frowned. “Mad dog.”
Lin Duxi smiled faintly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes. “A pack of mad dogs.”
They wanted to project their schemes onto An Yu, but this time she wouldn’t retreat. One retreat six years ago had caused consequences she had spent nearly half a decade recovering from. She could not endure An Yu leaving her again.
Fortunately, An Yu felt the same: “They will surely take action. According to Zhao Su Nan, this time they probably want to threaten you through me.”
She couldn’t help muttering a curse.
Lin Duxi held her hand. “I’ve already arranged for my people to handle the rest. They won’t cause us any trouble.”
An Yu turned to her. “Is Lin Ze still in contact with you at all?”
Lin Duxi thought for two seconds, then shook her head. “Except for the time he blocked me at the supermarket entrance, there hasn’t been much contact. That time he came for money, I didn’t give it to him.”
An Yu’s eyes narrowed. “It seems they really are short on money. They’ll probably act soon.”
Indeed, things progressed quickly. On the evening that An Yu and Lin Duxi returned from recording the show, An Yu called Shi Yu.
Loud voices came from the other end; Shi Yu sounded somewhat tipsy.
An Yu: “Are you at a bar?”
Shi Yu chuckled and then quickly sounded aggrieved. “I’m feeling down; can’t I drink?”
“Did you have a fight with Dr. Jiang?”
As soon as An Yu mentioned it, the noise on the other end immediately went silent.
An Yu: “So that’s it.”
Shi Yu: “I don’t know what Dr. Jiang meant. I went to her house today. We watched a movie, the atmosphere was so good I couldn’t help but kiss her. She accepted it, but afterwards, she didn’t bring it up at all and avoided me. An Yu, do you think she really doesn’t like me, or is it just my filter on her?”
Shi Yu kept rambling about her feelings for Jiang Yu, not fully aware of what she was saying, just speaking whatever came to mind.
An Yu put the call on speaker, quietly listening. Shi Yu didn’t care whether An Yu was listening; she just needed an outlet for her emotions, otherwise she would be drinking alone.
Suddenly, An Yu remembered: hadn’t she once deliberately avoided Lin Duxi’s advances? Had Lin Duxi felt as heartbroken as Shi Yu? A wave of guilt surged through her.
When the voice on the other end stopped, An Yu spoke: “Which bar are you at? I’ll send someone to pick you up.”
Shi Yu: “I think I saw Pei Lu.”
“What?”
“Why is he… hmm, a bit far. I’ll go closer to check.” Shi Yu said sneakily.
An Yu hurriedly stopped her: “Don’t go by yourself. Wait for me. I’ll come get you.”
“Ah, no need. I saw him,” Shi Yu said softly. “He’s drinking with a blond guy.”
An Yu’s heart tightened. “Blond, what does he look like?”
Shi Yu squinted through the dim bar lights: “His hair is deep yellow, looks like a delinquent would dye it, dressed in all black. He doesn’t look big, maybe a college student at most. Pei Lu is drinking and leaning on him, having a blast.”
An Yu put on her coat. “Wait there. I’ll come get you.”
Pei Lu actually knew Lin Ze.
An Yu was shocked. She just wanted to confirm if it was true. Opening the door, the cold wind hit her and cleared her mind.
She couldn’t go—if they saw her, it would alert them.
An Yu closed the door and stood in the hallway. Suddenly, a startled voice came from her phone, snapping her out of her thoughts.
“Did they see you?” An Yu panicked. “Run!”
Shi Yu was stunned. “I saw Dr. Jiang!”
An Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
Shi Yu: “She saw me, and she’s walking over! What should I do?”
An Yu: “She’s probably coming to you on purpose. Don’t be afraid.”
Shi Yu: “But I…”
Then silence. An Yu called out a few times.
From the phone came a gentle female voice: “Why are you here all alone?” An Yu immediately stopped speaking.
Shi Yu held the phone tightly. “Come have a drink? Isn’t that why everyone’s here?”
The woman opened her lips, her tone restrained but filled with concern: “If you want to drink, I can drink with you. Don’t come here alone.”
Shi Yu felt inexplicably sad listening to her gentle voice, and couldn’t help replying: “Do I need to report to Dr. Jiang even to have a drink at a bar?”
The woman was silenced by her remark.
An Yu hesitated whether to hang up when she heard the voice continue:
“About what happened today, I’m sorry.”
Shi Yu’s eyes widened. Did she hear wrong? “What did you say?”
“I don’t know what it really means to like someone. I’ve been busy with work all these years. To me, liking someone is a distant thing. Today you kissed me, I didn’t know how to respond, didn’t know how to express myself, so I instinctively chose to avoid it. I’m sorry for making you upset.”
An Yu hung up the phone, feeling that nothing else remained for her to do.
