After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 84
Even though she clearly knew that An Yu was teasing her, Lin Duxi still fell for it, feeling both frustrated and helpless.
An Yu looked at her puffed-up, angry cheeks and couldn’t help but want to laugh. But she knew that if she laughed in front of Lin Duxi right now, Lin Duxi would tear her apart.
An Yu held back the smile on her face, but the amusement in her eyes inevitably spilled out.
Lin Duxi squinted, her ears hidden in her hair already turning red from An Yu’s gaze, and she smiled slightly.
Suddenly, An Yu felt a ticklish sensation at her waist. She shivered and tried to dodge, only to be pulled into the soft bed by Lin Duxi.
“You’re cheating!” An Yu exclaimed, stopping her laughter under Lin Duxi’s relentless advance.
Lin Duxi, having finally taken her revenge, paused her hands roaming around An Yu’s waist and wrapped her in an embrace.
The lively room quieted considerably. An Yu’s emotions, too, gradually calmed as Lin Duxi held her tighter. Lin Duxi’s body was warmer, so An Yu turned to face her.
She saw the care reflected in Lin Duxi’s eyes, and her chest felt as if something heavy pressed down on it.
Lin Duxi pressed closer, then suddenly spoke.
“I had a nightmare. In it, you weren’t there. I was scared. I didn’t like that dream.”
She nuzzled An Yu’s ear, her voice a soft murmur between lovers.
“It’s just a nightmare. It won’t come true,” An Yu immediately said, instinctively moving as she spoke, feeling a bit dazed herself.
Lin Duxi smiled without saying anything, simply holding An Yu even tighter.
The dimly lit room had only a small lamp on, and in the shadows, something seemed to be quietly growing, filling the air with a peculiar atmosphere.
An Yu’s ears flushed deeper, and the places Lin Duxi had touched seemed to be on fire. She felt dry-mouthed and tongue-tied.
Suddenly, she sat up. “I’ll bring the food up.”
Lin Duxi’s eyes sparkled with a smile, her gaze following An Yu all the way to the door before sinking into a deep, cold darkness.
Lin Duxi couldn’t ignore An Yu’s reply—it had been too quick, too much like she was deliberately avoiding something.
Fragments of memories, rising and falling in Lin Duxi’s mind, stirred up nonexistent recollections, giving her a terrible headache. She hugged the pillow An Yu had just rested on to ease the discomfort.
Something was preventing her from thinking too deeply. The more she tried, the heavier the pain in her chest grew, until she had to endure it forcefully.
The fleeting images were indeed experiences she had gone through: scenes where she won awards, conversed with people, acted, daydreamed, and sought therapy. In these frames, she was more graceful, more beautiful, more poised.
But An Yu was absent.
In every frame, every moment of her life, An Yu was completely missing, as if she had vanished from the world.
Vanished.
A sense of despair from the dream lingered with Lin Duxi as she awoke, spreading through her body from the soles of her feet. She suddenly remembered the scenes she had dreamt before—visions of An Yu leaving her, which she had resisted watching.
She had always thought those were just premonitions, but what if they were things she had actually experienced?
An Yu and Lin Duxi had spent quite a long time in the room, and when An Yu went downstairs, she found no one at the dining table.
Fortunately, there was leftover porridge in the kitchen.
An Yu warmed the porridge, and while waiting, she reviewed the scenes she had just witnessed in punishment mode.
She had controlled her limbs to deal with the men in black. They had adapted to her moves, kicking back in response. Though she hadn’t removed their masks, she had reached a more valuable conclusion.
Punishment mode wasn’t about reliving the helplessness of death; it was about returning to that moment and experiencing it again.
She couldn’t prevent her own death but could uncover the truth and identify the real culprit. An Yu felt excited, even wanting to provoke the system again.
The sound of the porridge being heated pulled An Yu out of her thoughts. She looked at it and glimpsed a flash of a snow-white dress in her mind, finally remembering something she had forgotten.
The woman in the white dress had been a variable in punishment mode. Why was she there? What did she have to do with An Yu’s death?
She was a firsthand witness to the incident and the first person An Yu had seen witnessing her death.
Who was she?
An Yu instinctively glanced upstairs, but her mind denied her own suspicion.
By the time An Yu had collected herself and carried the porridge upstairs, more than ten minutes had passed. She hoped Lin Duxi hadn’t slept, since going a day without food would be difficult.
Carrying the porridge, she struggled with the doorknob, finally using her elbow to push it down.
The door slowly opened, and An Yu looked up to see Lin Duxi standing there, her appearance framed by the light from the corridor, making her features even more ethereal.
An Yu was dazzled by Lin Duxi’s beauty. Lin Duxi took the porridge from her hands and placed it on the table without drinking immediately, staring straight at her.
Even after just ten minutes, Lin Duxi seemed even more beautiful in An Yu’s eyes. She still wore the same clothes, the collar slightly askew.
In the blink of an eye, An Yu felt dizzy, and the next second, she was sitting on the edge of the bed, with Lin Duxi on her lap, eyes shimmering with unshed tears, looking at her.
“Almost forgot what bad thing you did just now,” Lin Duxi chided, one hand gently stroking her cheek, the other wandering restlessly.
“What bad thing…” An Yu’s words caught in her throat.
Lin Duxi teased her on purpose, lingering close, and when An Yu tried to follow but then hesitated, she frowned in dissatisfaction.
Lin Duxi smiled faintly, lightly patting her face, then cupped it in her hands, focusing entirely on her.
Unknowingly, feelings they had kept hidden were released freely. Lin Duxi let out a soft hum.
Suddenly, An Yu felt a sharp pain in her head, as if pricked by needles. Her drifting consciousness snapped back, and she gasped, loosening her lips.
Lin Duxi opened her eyes, full of confusion, and kissed the base of her neck softly.
An Yu’s hand touched something hard and realized she had been stroking Lin Duxi’s back, her fingers brushing the last button of her clothing.
Her face immediately flushed. She hurriedly pushed Lin Duxi slightly away, noticing her own reaction.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Duxi looked up, puzzled by why An Yu had stopped.
An Yu’s body reacted instinctively, so she hastily changed the topic. “Cough… I just remembered—we haven’t planned the location for tomorrow’s date yet.”
Lin Duxi didn’t want to continue the topic and leaned against her shoulder with a lazy sigh. “You’re not paying attention, An Yu.”
An Yu reached for the porridge, but felt the bowl was cold and withdrew her hand.
It seemed tonight, they weren’t going to eat.
“I suddenly thought of a place,” An Yu said, eyes full of anticipation.
Lin Duxi got up reluctantly. “Okay, I’m curious about what you came up with. I’ll go shower first.”
An Yu nodded obediently, watching Lin Duxi take her change of clothes into the bathroom, then let out a soft breath.
She quickly tidied herself, changed clothes, turned on the light, and sat at the table to carefully plan the location.
What she had just told Lin Duxi wasn’t entirely made up. She had indeed thought of a place—a place neither of them had visited since they started dating.
An amusement park.
It was funny, actually. Even after a month together, they hadn’t been to an amusement park once. Trying to recall her feelings at the time, An Yu realized that she had thought that being anywhere with Lin Duxi would make her happy.
She hadn’t suggested going because she remembered being scared of the haunted house as a child.
Lost in thought, she refocused on planning their date.
She was so absorbed that she didn’t notice when Lin Duxi finished her shower and appeared by her side.
“Are these all things we’re going to do?” Lin Duxi’s soft, damp voice suddenly sounded in her ear.
An Yu turned to see Lin Duxi bent over, watching her plans intently.
An Yu wanted to hide them, but then decided it was unnecessary.
If she kept it secret, Lin Duxi would be curious tomorrow. If she revealed it now, Lin Duxi would not only anticipate it but also imagine their date and the things they would do.
“It’s okay. These are just things that normal couples do on dates.”
Lin Duxi’s expression froze for a moment, then returned to normal. “I’m looking forward to it.”
An Yu noticed that brief flicker of emotion and understood why.
Things that normal couples do—things they had never done together despite being together—made An Yu feel guilty. She hadn’t paid enough attention to Lin Duxi back then; even their dates were just at her house.
“If I can’t sleep tonight, An Yu, remember to sing for me,” Lin Duxi said cheerfully, her face full of expectation.
An Yu nodded.
But in the end, she didn’t sing. Lin Duxi was too tired. Even after sleeping for a while, she became drowsy the moment her head touched the pillow.
Still, An Yu lay in bed wide awake. The system noticed Lin Duxi asleep and immediately popped up.
“Host, do you know what you were just doing? If I hadn’t shocked you at the crucial moment, you’d have gone all the way! I’m so disappointed in you!”
An Yu raised an eyebrow. “But didn’t you say I shouldn’t disobey the protagonist? I was doing exactly what Lin Duxi wanted. Why are you so angry?”
System: “…” She sounded reasonable.
Still, the system felt something was wrong. “You could have at least been reasonable if you refused! Why are you so stubborn!”
An Yu frowned. “I’m following orders. I don’t want to go through punishment again.” She shivered at the memory of the terrible experience.
“Besides, if I really refused her, you would’ve noticed my disobedience. I’m sure the next second I would’ve entered punishment mode.”
An Yu’s words confused the system, which wanted to activate punishment mode again but couldn’t find a reason.
An Yu had truly followed its instructions—perfectly obedient to Lin Duxi. She had done it so well she could compete for the “most diligent employee” award.
The system was furious but couldn’t find a fault, so it had to swallow its anger and leave.
With the pressure gone, An Yu exhaled, releasing a lingering question in her mind.
Indeed, she couldn’t disobey the protagonist. Even if she kissed Lin Duxi, since it was at Lin Duxi’s request, the system couldn’t punish her.
An Yu felt excited at this discovery.
Suddenly, a hand covered her lips. An Yu froze, her thoughts interrupted.
The hand teased her lips, then rested on her shoulders. Someone leaned in close.
“Don’t sigh, An Yu.” Lin Duxi wrapped herself around her, eyes closed, clinging softly.
An Yu lowered her gaze. Lin Duxi remained in that position, as if her earlier words were just murmurs in a dream.
An Yu smiled slightly, abandoning complicated thoughts, closed her eyes, and prepared to sleep.
“Thank you, Lin Duxi.”
