After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 107
Because they were going to the orphanage to visit Xiaoxiao, An Yu and Lin Duxi specifically bought lots of supplies, filling the trunk of the car to the brim before finally stopping.
When they stopped at a red light, An Yu rested her hands on the steering wheel. Sunlight streamed through the window, gently spilling over them. In her peripheral vision, Lin Duxi was leaning back in the seat, quietly asleep. The sunlight fell on her, casting a faint golden glow over her. Everything was so serene and beautiful.
An Yu couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile, then turned back to start driving again.
The road that had been under repair when she last came with Shiyu had long since been restored. An Yu drove all the way to the orphanage, passing the abandoned small park along the way.
By then, Lin Duxi had woken up and was staring fixedly at the long-abandoned playground equipment. An Yu slowed the car as she noticed her gaze.
Last time, they had come in such a rush that Lin Duxi had been completely preoccupied with whether An Yu truly liked her, leaving her no attention to spare for the surroundings. Now, during this drive, she was finally able to take in the entirety of the park.
It was such a small place—small enough to measure with a single glance—yet so large that her first half of life had been trapped here.
Mist gathered in Lin Duxi’s eyes. She hurriedly blinked, brushing away the sting in her nose, and turned her gaze away.
When the car reached the orphanage, they saw the director standing at the entrance from afar. Upon seeing them get out, she quickly walked over. The moment she saw Lin Duxi, a wave of bittersweet emotion surged, making her voice catch.
“Xiao An, Xiao Lin, you’re here,” she said, unable to stop herself from wiping away tears.
“Hey, look at me! Even at my age, I still cry,” she scolded herself.
Lin Duxi just looked at her, her eyes full of mist.
“Director, there are some things for the children in the trunk. Could you have some staff help us carry them in?” An Yu said, feeling a bit somber, choosing her words carefully.
“Alright, you two care so much for the orphanage—it makes my heart feel sweet as honey. Xiao Lin, you haven’t been home in so long. Come on, let me give you a proper tour. The orphanage is much better equipped now,” the director said, composing herself, then took Lin Duxi’s hand and led them inside.
The orphanage looked the same as when An Yu had last visited, but Lin Duxi gazed around in wonder, her eyes lighting up with little sparks as she listened carefully to the director’s every word.
This was the first time An Yu had seen so much emotion on Lin Duxi’s face, and all of it stemmed from her longing for this place. Thinking that this had been her home for more than ten years made An Yu’s heart tremble.
It wasn’t a day off, yet the orphanage was livelier than the last time An Yu had been there. Staff members walked around with smiles on their faces, and the sound of children playing echoed nearby. Curiously, An Yu asked the director about it.
With a kind smile, the director looked toward the sound of laughter.
“It’s Xiaoxiao; she’s found a home.”
When An Yu and Lin Duxi reached the backyard, they immediately saw the little girl sitting on a rocking horse, looking dejected.
She rested one hand on the horse’s head, the other supporting her cheek, forcing a sad little smile. Despite wearing a brand-new, pretty dress, she couldn’t hide her gloom.
The director called out from a distance, “Xiaoxiao, look who’s here!”
Xiaoxiao turned toward the voice, her usually calm eyes widening, then lighting up brilliantly.
Children couldn’t hide their emotions—the genuine, burning excitement in her eyes was unmistakable. An Yu and Lin Duxi felt immeasurably glad they had come today.
While Xiaoxiao was still stunned, An Yu and Lin Duxi reached her side. Lin Duxi knelt first to meet her gaze, reaching out to ruffle her hair.
“I read the note you gave to An Yu. Thank you for wishing us well,” she said, gently pinching the little girl’s cheeks.
Xiaoxiao was momentarily stunned, caught off guard by such gentle attention from someone so pretty. Even a child couldn’t help but blush, finally shyly responding after a while.
“Lin Jie, I knew you were beautiful,” she said.
Lin Duxi blinked, then gently pinched the girl’s cheeks again. She was just too adorable.
An Yu pretended to be upset, teasing, “Am I not beautiful?”
Xiaoxiao quickly replied, “An Jie is beautiful too.”
The three shared a smile—already balancing praise like little mediators despite her age.
Xiaoxiao took Lin Duxi’s hand to get off the rocking horse, then grabbed An Yu’s hand with her free hand.
“I thought I wouldn’t see you,” Xiaoxiao said excitedly.
“I promised I’d come with Lin Duxi to see you. I never break my promises,” An Yu said seriously, lowering her head to speak to her.
“Yay!” The little girl cheered, throwing up a big smile. She held both of their hands, and just as An Yu and Lin Duxi thought she would lead them away, she crossed her little hands, letting them hold each other instead.
An Yu and Lin Duxi looked at each other in surprise.
“You promised us—you’ll always stay together!” the little girl said, looking up at them, her eyes full of sincerity.
Both were momentarily stunned, then exchanged smiles. Lin Duxi knelt down again, taking Xiaoxiao’s little hand with her other hand and gently said,
“Alright. We promise Xiaoxiao we’ll always stay together. We won’t lie to a child.”
Xiaoxiao’s expectation and nervousness melted into a stronger joy. She couldn’t help stepping forward to hug Lin Duxi, her little arms around her—though it looked more like Lin Duxi was holding her in return.
As the two held Xiaoxiao and walked back, they encountered her adoptive parents. They were momentarily surprised but then looked at Xiaoxiao with love and affection as she held their hands.
Xiaoxiao was going to take photos. Seeing her so happy, An Yu and Lin Duxi smiled from the heart.
“Let’s take a photo together,” the director invited them.
The two exchanged a glance and then stood together.
With the click of the camera, they captured a photo full of smiles from everyone at the orphanage. This photo was hung in the director’s office, replacing the old family portrait.
An Yu and Lin Duxi didn’t rush back to drive. Instead, they went to Jiangcheng No. 2 Middle School.
After negotiating with the security guards at the entrance and explaining that they were alumni, an older guard looked at them suspiciously, sizing them up.
Another, slightly older guard sipped his tea, glanced at Lin Duxi, and said,
“Let them in. I remember them—they really were students here.”
The retractable gate opened, and they entered smoothly.
An Yu asked curiously, “How does that guard still remember you after all these years?”
Lin Duxi casually held her hand and smiled, “Maybe I was the top student back then.”
An Yu laughed, “That makes sense. Very convincing.” But she also wondered whether Lin Duxi was seriously so proud.
It was class time now. The school was empty outside, with only the distant sound of reading echoing occasionally.
Holding hands, they wandered around their old school and eventually came to the big tree.
The tree was still the same, lush and thriving, blending with the sky. But the wall that could be climbed down from it now had a fence, so no one could climb over.
“This is where we first met. I was so scared when I saw you—I thought I’d get in trouble on the first day of school,” An Yu recalled fondly.
Lin Duxi smiled quietly, gazing at the wall and the tree leaves above. Following An Yu’s words, memories surfaced in her mind, making her laugh softly.
They walked around the school, going to the third classroom they had once attended.
Seasons had changed from winter to spring, and the classroom still bore the label “Class 3,” though no longer with them inside.
To avoid disturbing the students, An Yu and Lin Duxi only peeked in through the windows.
Descending the classroom building, An Yu noticed the wall of outstanding students and class photos in the lobby. Lin Duxi’s photo was there.
During an interview, An Yu had seen Lin Duxi’s youthful school photo and had been moved. Now, she took out her phone to snap a picture.
Lin Duxi smiled helplessly—here she was, and yet An Yu still wanted a photo.
But with a casual glance, Lin Duxi suddenly froze. Among the photos of outstanding classes, there was a class photo of their own.
Perhaps because there were too many photos, no one noticed. Or maybe students were too busy to pay attention—but Lin Duxi saw it immediately.
The graduation photo was slightly blurry, but it still showed two young girls. They were not looking at the camera but turning toward each other, showing pure, fair cheeks.
Even though it was blurry, Lin Duxi could feel the sparks of affection in their gazes. She reached out, gently touching An Yu in the photo.
A familiar voice called out nearby—those in the photo, her beloved, calling her. Lin Duxi withdrew her hand and turned away.
They walked around again, eventually resting under the sports equipment on the playground. Some student athletes were training on the track, but they sat quietly in the corner, unnoticed.
Looking at the playground, An Yu suddenly remembered something.
“Do you remember one time during lunch break when I couldn’t sleep and dragged you out to play?”
Mentioning this memory, Lin Duxi could immediately recall every moment she had spent with An Yu and nodded.
An Yu continued, “I remember that the school was so quiet back then, like it was just the two of us. We ran around the school, and when we got tired, we lay on the playground looking at the sky.”
“Wearing our uniforms, we could do anything. Now we can’t—the playground is dirty,” An Yu sighed regretfully.
Lin Duxi smiled softly, her gaze warm and encompassing, as if wrapping An Yu completely.
She remembered it clearly.
Back then, lying on the playground, the sun warming the ground, it had felt so comfortable.
An Yu tilted her head toward her, excitement spilling from her eyes, a faint light glimmering in them, settling in Lin Duxi’s heart and sending ripples across her inner lake. She could clearly hear her own heart beating noisily, as if it would leap out of her chest.
She heard An Yu say, “I really love this moment!”
And she thought: she loved it too.
She loved An Yu.
That’s where it ends! Thank you all for enjoying this story, and for accompanying An Yu and Xiao Lin, witnessing their love. I will take a short break for the next two days to think carefully about how to write the side story (cheek on hand). Regardless, the author thanks everyone here!
