- After Being Forced Into a Facial Paralysis, the Villain Said I’m Such a Drama Queen
- Chapter 36 - Disturbed Heart
Neither of them paid much mind to that little interlude from the other day, but everyone else had already tacitly assumed that Sheng Xia was merely acting this way to protect the Eldest Miss by concealing their feelings. For a time, they were moved to tears.
In front of the Eldest Miss, they didn’t dare show too much. Even in their minds, they only indulged in private, giddy excitement for a while, managing surprisingly not to let a single hint slip that Lu Wanxing could detect. She simply thought they were in a good mood because the Mid-Autumn Festival was approaching.
In previous years, Lu Wanxing would give them a week off for Mid-Autumn so they could spend more time with their families. This year, since Mid-Autumn and National Day coincided, she simply granted them a half-month break, providing everyone with gifts and red envelopes.
Lu Wanxing was never stingy with such benefits; during holidays, she would also send a portion of gifts and red envelopes to the families of all the domestic staff and bodyguards.
Usually, Uncle Li and the others would stay at the villa for a few extra days before leaving. This year, however, because Sheng Xia was there, Uncle Li hesitated briefly before deciding to head back early. A-Biao, meanwhile, drove the Eldest Miss and Sheng Xia to the Old Lady’s house.
Upon entering, Lu Wanxing’s first priority was to scan the surroundings. Starting from the kitchen, she inspected everything item by item. Because of the previous “alcohol hidden in the soy sauce bottle” incident, she didn’t even overlook the condiments now.
The Eldest Miss walked into the bathroom and stared at the bottles of body wash and shampoo on the shelf, falling into deep thought.
Seeing this, the Old Lady said helplessly, “Wanwan, I haven’t become that unscrupulous yet…”
“Who knows?” Previously, Lu Wanxing would never have guessed a soy sauce bottle could serve as the Old Lady’s container. Thinking that the Old Lady probably wouldn’t be bold enough to hide it in her own bedroom, Lu Wanxing didn’t investigate further.
She could have used certain questions to make the Old Lady’s inner thoughts reveal the hiding spots, but Lu Wanxing didn’t want to use that kind of calculation on her. Sometimes, she was willing to play along with these somewhat childish games of hide-and-seek.
However, excessive drinking was harmful to the health. She said to Sheng Xia in the living room, “If you smell any alcohol, tell me immediately.”
The Old Lady was displeased upon hearing this. “Wanwan, you actually don’t trust me! It really breaks my heart!”
She wiped away pretend tears, peeking at Lu Wanxing. Seeing her unmoved, the Old Lady looked tearfully toward Sheng Xia instead. Sheng Xia pretended not to receive the signal and took the vegetables from the grandmother’s hands into the kitchen.
The grandmother sighed and followed her into the kitchen. Sweeping away her previous sorrow, her eyes lit up as she looked at Sheng Xia.
Sheng Xia felt uncomfortable under the gaze. “Grandma, why are you looking at me like that?”
It was a bit creepy.
The Old Lady originally wanted to say that Uncle Li had already told her everything. She had thought long and hard about the two of them being together and ultimately decided not to disturb the children, letting them develop on their own.
But thinking that she still needed to observe just in case it was a misunderstanding, which would be quite embarrassing she swallowed her words and asked, “How have you and Wanwan been getting along lately?”
“We get along very well; the Eldest Miss is a very good person.” Sheng Xia’s face flushed slightly. “I like the Eldest Miss very much.”
Sheng Xia spoke about how Lu Wanxing had been tutoring her and mentioned the changes in the Eldest Miss. Most importantly, the Eldest Miss’s appetite had improved slightly recently; her cheeks had a bit more fullness, making her look less cold than before.
Just listening to this brought a hint of tears to Grandma’s eyes. “Good, good. It’s good that you get along.”
She found Sheng Xia more and more pleasing to the eye. Thinking that they would become family in the future, Grandma wiped her eyes and then leaned in quietly. “Little Xia, I know you have a keen nose. If you smell any alcohol, don’t say anything, alright?”
In her youth, Grandma used to drink a bottle a day without pause; now, being without alcohol was truly difficult for her to bear.
Sheng Xia looked hesitant. Fortunately, Lu Wanxing walked over at that moment. Sheng Xia quickly called out, “Eldest Miss!”
“Hmm?”
Sheng Xia blurted out randomly, “Is it okay if we eat carrots today?”
Hearing this, the Old Lady said, “Wanwan doesn’t eat those.” She hadn’t bought any either.
Sheng Xia froze for a moment. “She doesn’t?” Thinking back carefully, it was true that she hadn’t seen the Eldest Miss eat any dish containing carrots.
In that instant, she realized she hadn’t done well enough. She should have asked Grandma long ago about what the Eldest Miss liked and disliked, but after all this time, it had never occurred to her to ask.
Sheng Xia immediately took out her portable notebook and asked Grandma if there were any other things to note. The Old Lady was naturally happy that she was so attentive toward Lu Wanxing, so she listed off various vegetables and meats, totaling over a dozen items.
Listening from the side, the Eldest Miss felt a bit embarrassed and annoyed. She said, “Old Lady, I was originally planning to let you have a little drink later.”
Once this trump card was played, Grandma immediately shut her mouth, even covering it exaggeratedly with her hand like a child a true old prankster.
Lu Wanxing caught Sheng Xia looking at her out of the corner of her eye. Her fingers resting on the wheelchair curled slightly; she pretended not to notice and simply left.
Recently, Sheng Xia’s culinary skills had improved significantly, making her more than capable of assisting Grandma. Before long, the meal was ready. Seeing that lunch was served, A-Biao put away his documents and followed the Eldest Miss over.
At the dining table, the Old Lady looked expectantly at Lu Wanxing. Seeing her bring out a small bottle of wine, Grandma breathed a sigh of relief. She then smilingly used the serving chopsticks to give Sheng Xia a chicken leg. “Little Xia, eat more meat.”
Grandma felt very fond of Sheng Xia. What a well-behaved girl; she just didn’t know why the girl always remained expressionless in front of Wanwan.
“Thank you, Grandma.” Sheng Xia put on gloves and ate heartily, her appetite making the food look very delicious.
Grandma was even happier seeing her enjoy it and couldn’t help but keep piling food onto her plate. Sheng Xia accepted everything, eating like a whirlwind.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. A delivery arrived, and upon checking the slip, it turned out to be a portion of stir-fried carrots.
Sheng Xia blinked. “Is this a mistake? None of us ordered this.”
Lu Wanxing glanced at A-Biao. A-Biao stood up and said, “I ordered it. I just suddenly had a craving.”
“Alright.” Sheng Xia took the delivery and placed it on the table.
To everyone’s surprise, the Eldest Miss actually used the serving chopsticks to pick up a piece and put it in her bowl. Suppressing the urge to gag, she ate it directly. After finishing, her gaze landed on Sheng Xia, and she gave a slight nod, her entire demeanor screaming, ‘Who says I can’t do it?’
Noticing this, the Old Lady couldn’t help but want to laugh. Realizing that her granddaughter had gained a bit more “humanity,” she found her much more adorable.
“Wanwan is so good,” she said, beaming at Lu Wanxing.
Sheng Xia also began pouring out praises as if they cost nothing. The two of them were coaxing her like a child, making Lu Wanxing feel awkward. She tucked a stray hair behind her ear and intentionally kept a stiff face. “Just eat your food.”
Grandma wanted to say more, but Lu Wanxing didn’t give her the chance. She directly poured two-thirds of the wine from the Old Lady’s glass back into the bottle, her tone cool: “Old Lady, when I said one glass, I meant the total amount you can drink over several days. Are you sure you want to use up your entire quota right now?”
Sheng Xia let out a snort of laughter, but because of her facial paralysis, it sounded like cold mockery.
Although Lu Wanxing knew she didn’t mean it that way, she still glanced at Sheng Xia. “Is your homework finished?”
Sheng Xia and Grandma looked at each other and shook their heads in unison. Then, they simultaneously pushed the carrots in front of Lu Wanxing.
“Eldest Miss / Wanwan, have some more~”
The three of them were mutually “hurting” each other; it was a scene of hidden bitterness masked by feigned strength.
A-Biao, sitting nearby, didn’t dare speak for fear the war would spill over onto him. He couldn’t help but miss Xiao Qi and the others who were still at the villa.
Those few were orphans and usually had nowhere else to go, so they could only stay at the villa.
According to previous habits, they would usually stay here at the Old Lady’s for a few days before returning to the villa, at which point those annoying collateral relatives would surely come visiting again.
A-Biao stole a glance at Sheng Xia, thinking about those people and wondering if the Eldest Miss would bring Sheng Xia back with her this time.
After eating, Sheng Xia asked, “Eldest Miss, do we have any plans for the Mid-Autumn Festival?” There were still two days until the festival.
Lu Wanxing looked at the television in front of her and said casually, “No. You’ll stay here with the Old Lady then; I have business to attend to back at the villa.”
“Then I’ll go back with you, Eldest Miss.” Hearing that Lu Wanxing wouldn’t be staying, Sheng Xia made her choice instantly.
Lu Wanxing smiled, though she felt less happy than when she was being stern at the dinner table. “No need. I’ll give you time off then. You can go wherever you want to play.”
“It’s a good chance for you to change your wardrobe and buy some things you like.” Back then, she had sent A-Biao to buy clothes, and the result was a monotonous collection of shirts. Although Sheng Xia looked good in them, they were a bit too formal.
Grandma frowned upon hearing this. “You’re letting Little Xia go buy clothes by herself?”
Seeing her daughter confirm this, Grandma said directly, “The two of you go together. Give Little Xia some advice.”
Lu Wanxing was about to refuse, but then she and her wheelchair were practically shoved out the door by the Old Lady.
The three of them looked at the tightly closed door. Finally, the Eldest Miss sighed softly: “Let’s go. If we don’t buy any clothes today, we probably won’t be allowed back inside.”
A-Biao: “Eldest Miss, where are we going?”
Lu Wanxing turned her head to look at Sheng Xia. “You decide.”
But asking was pointless. Sheng Xia had never shopped for clothes in this area and wasn’t sure. In the end, Lu Wanxing had A-Biao choose a mid-tier shopping mall.
Although Lu Wanxing was reluctant to go out, now that she was already out, she wouldn’t do things halfway. While in the car, she had already planned the route, identified shops with good reviews, and proposed three constructive options.
All of them were “head-to-toe” full-service plans convenient and fast.
Sheng Xia had never gone window shopping before and nodded in agreement with the Eldest Miss’s views. Seeing this, A-Biao felt a bit frustrated.
Modern girls shopping is supposed to be about the fun of spending time together and the excitement of opening a “blind box.” Planning it like this makes it feel like completing a task.
Darn it, it’s a rare outing! Should I subtly remind the Eldest Miss?
A-Biao was feeling conflicted, and his inner monologue was heard loud and clear by Lu Wanxing.
Seeing Sheng Xia occasionally looking out the window, seemingly excited for this trip, Lu Wanxing pursed her lips. Finally, she put away her tablet. “Never mind. Let’s just walk around and see.”
Hearing they were going to browse from the first floor up, Sheng Xia’s eyes lit up. As they passed by various shops and VR gaming facilities, she realized this place was exactly as she had imagined.
“If you like something, you can say so directly. Consider it a Mid-Autumn gift from me.” Lu Wanxing saw Sheng Xia acting like a little animal released from its cage, and a smile touched her eyes.
Thinking of something, she turned to A-Biao. “You can look for things, too.”
A-Biao had followed Lu Wanxing for many years and knew she wasn’t just being polite. He nodded and didn’t refuse. Seeing this, Sheng Xia didn’t refuse either, though she kept wondering what she could give in return.
At the women’s clothing store, Lu Wanxing let Sheng Xia pick for herself while she offered advice.
Because Sheng Xia was thin and had good posture, many outfits suited her perfectly. Due to her lack of facial expression, she looked somewhat aloof in a black dress, giving a glimpse of her future elegance.
[The ‘Mom’ fans are ecstatic! When Little Xia stands quietly, she is the perfect ‘cool and aloof’ older sister type.] She had been too thin before, but after being cared for for a few months, she had filled out. Compared to her previous scrawny self, she had changed quite a bit.
It wasn’t just their imagination; they felt Sheng Xia had grown taller over these months. She was around 163cm before, and now she looked to be about 165cm. Was it because she was still growing as a teenager, or was it due to her special physique from the post-apocalyptic world?
Lu Wanxing also felt a flash of amazement upon seeing Sheng Xia. She felt that while black suited her expressionless face, it looked a bit too mature for now. She had A-Biao pick another one, and he directly took a pink princess-style Lolita dress from a corner display.
Sheng Xia had never worn such clothes. Although she was a bit intrigued, she was also embarrassed, looking at the Eldest Miss as if for help.
The corners of Lu Wanxing’s lips curved. “Go try it on.”
When she came out, A-Biao’s “protective brother” heart nearly melted. If only Sheng Xia could smile, it would be perfect.
When a person is good-looking, they can pull off any style. Lu Wanxing seemed to have discovered a new hobby, continuously pairing outfits for Sheng Xia and trying out various styles.
However, the brooch on Sheng Xia’s current outfit wouldn’t sit straight no matter how she looked at it. Lu Wanxing told her to adjust it, but she couldn’t get it right.
The more Sheng Xia adjusted, the more flustered she became. She felt like a puppy chasing its own tail spinning around but never quite catching it. Lu Wanxing let out a small laugh. “Come here.”
Lu Wanxing reached up to readjust the brooch for her. Sheng Xia looked down, realizing she liked leaning down to look at the Eldest Miss, always drawn to her clear and beautiful features.
Perhaps she had brushed against it while changing, but the bangs near Sheng Xia’s forehead were a bit messy. She was about to tuck the hair back herself, but unexpectedly, the Eldest Miss reached out at the same time.
Cool fingertips touched the back of her hand, and both of them froze. Their gazes met in the air for a few seconds before Lu Wanxing withdrew her hand first.
Her tone held a hint of helplessness and a rare tenderness. “Your hair is a mess and you don’t even notice.”
Sheng Xia looked away and tucked the hair back herself, the warmth in her cheeks rising. “I didn’t notice just now.”
Perhaps it was the way the Eldest Miss’s admiring gaze fell upon her that caused an uncontrollable joy in her heart; she couldn’t help but crave a little more attention.
Sheng Xia was always focused on coming out quickly and didn’t have time to notice these details.
Wanting her best self to be seen, yet wanting to be seen quickly such a contradiction always led to some minor mishaps.
In the fitting room, Sheng Xia bit her lip and rubbed the back of her hand. She found herself acting a bit strange lately wanting to get close yet not wanting to, wanting the Eldest Miss to look at her with eyes full of laughter yet wanting her not to get too close, because being too close made her feel at a loss.
Sheng Xia patted her heated cheeks, pushing back her cluttered thoughts. Finally, she couldn’t help but think:
Why is the Eldest Miss so good? It makes it so I don’t even know how to act around her anymore.
