- After Being Forced Into a Facial Paralysis, the Villain Said I’m Such a Drama Queen
- Chapter 17 - Meeting Again
Su Tong’s affairs did not affect Sheng Xia. She continued going to work as usual, but after a few days, an uninvited guest appeared at her home.
“Sheng Xia, you little hussy! Living out here all by yourself who knows if you’re out here seducing men?!”
Sheng Xia hadn’t even made it upstairs after work when she heard a sharp, shrill voice accompanied by the harsh sound of someone kicking a door.
As she drew closer and heard her own name, Sheng Xia saw clearly who the visitor was.
It was her adoptive mother, Li Cuie.
It could be said that in their previous residential neighborhood, no one didn’t know her. The woman was excessively stingy and loved taking advantage of others. Most importantly, she was a massive gossip; if she gained a small advantage, she’d be beaming, but if she didn’t, she’d go around spreading rumors. She was incredibly annoying.
Furthermore, her treatment of the original owner of this body was nothing like a biological daughter. Every day was filled with either beatings or verbal abuse. Li Cuie was the reason Sheng Xia had missed the college entrance exams this year; she had intervened simply because she wanted the original owner to do housework for another year before selling her off.
When they first moved in, neighbors tried to advise Li Cuie to improve her attitude toward Sheng Xia. Seeing a teenager so thin and small, outsiders would have thought she was being abused.
Li Cuie’s excuse was that seeing Sheng Xia reminded her of her failed marriage and her scumbag ex-husband, so her attitude was “sometimes” poor, but she claimed to take great care of her at home. Later, once her true nature was exposed, she stopped hiding it altogether.
The original owner had always viewed the entrance exams as the key to changing her fate. After being blocked by Li Cuie, she finally developed the will to resist and ran away using money from her part-time jobs.
At the time, Li Cuie didn’t care, assuming Sheng Xia would return in a few days. By the time she wanted to find her, the girl was long gone. After searching for a while to no avail, Li Cuie grew lazy and only thought of Sheng Xia when looking at her messy room, followed by another round of foul-mouthed swearing.
Insults like the ones she was shouting today were second nature to her. They spilled out of her mouth without a second thought. Upon seeing Sheng Xia return, her saliva began to fly. “Come here and look at what time it is! It’s past eight o’clock and you’re not home. What, were you doing so much ‘business’ outside that you didn’t have time? Why don’t you just stay out all night hooking up with people?”
A neighbor who couldn’t stand it anymore spoke up: “Who are you, shouting here in the middle of the night? Little Xia was at her part-time job at the convenience store. It’s not as filthy as you’re making it out to be.”
The neighbor was a sturdy man. Seeing that he looked like someone not to be trifled with, Li Cuie lowered her volume slightly but still snapped back: “Who am I? I’m her mother! It’s perfectly natural for a mother to discipline her daughter!”
Hearing this, the expressions of the people around them shifted. If she hadn’t said she was the mother, one would have thought they were mortal enemies from a past life.
However, not everyone knew the truth like that neighbor. Hearing Li Cuie’s words, some began to speculate. Sheng Xia clearly looked underage; her sudden move here might have been because she caused some trouble back home.
And if memory served, wasn’t there a boy before who claimed to be her boyfriend and said Sheng Xia was kicked out because of an abortion?
Those who had heard that rumor immediately whispered to the onlookers, and the tide of opinion began to turn once more.
Sheng Xia had sharp ears and could hear every sound in the hallway. Hearing this, her grip on her backpack tightened. In an instant, she knew exactly what was going on.
Su Tong, that massive idiot. He must have told Li Cuie where she lived and spread those baseless rumors around the neighborhood to torment her.
The original owner had a psychological shadow regarding Li Cuie and subconsciously didn’t dare to defy her, but the current Sheng Xia didn’t care for such a person at all. She stopped her movement to open the door, pursed her lips, lifted her head, and let out a roar of indignation accompanied by falling tears.
“Mom! Can’t you just let me go?! Just let me study for my exams in peace!” This cry, sounding like it was drenched in blood and misery, caused the noisy hallway to fall silent instantly.
“Yes, you’ve always made me eat my brother’s leftovers and sleep in the storage room. You said you gave me food and a place to stay, and that not letting me starve to death was enough. I am very grateful to you because you also promised not to sell me to someone else before I turned eighteen.”
These few sentences stunned the onlookers.
This… this… were those the words of a human being?
Seeing Sheng Xia looking truly “grateful,” they wondered how many times she had been told these things to be brainwashed like this.
But what did she mean by “studying for exams”?
Just as they wondered, Sheng Xia said with a sobbing voice, “I remember all of that. But on the day of the entrance exams, you intentionally let my brother scald my leg and locked me in the house so I couldn’t leave. Now I just want to save money to go back to school. Will you still not let me go?”
By the time she finished, Sheng Xia looked as if she were about to collapse, her face covered in tears. The neighbor brother couldn’t help but curse, “What a piece of trash.”
“In middle school, you intentionally had people spread rumors that I was a slut because you didn’t want me to go to high school. Why… why are you still doing this?” Sheng Xia lowered her head, her suppressed appearance making the onlookers feel heartache and a sense of guilt.
As her final words landed, whispers broke out in the hallway again, but this time everyone was united in their contempt for Li Cuie.
“Is this child even hers? How can someone be so subhuman?”
Someone accidentally blurted out the truth, and Li Cuie’s expression faltered. She blustered, “I am your mother! Nothing I do is wrong!” With that, she snatched the keys from Sheng Xia’s hand, unlocked the door, and marched inside.
“Sister, do you want me to call the police for you?” The way Li Cuie had looked at Sheng Xia as if she wanted to eat her alive was quite frightening.
Sheng Xia’s face was pale. Wrapped in her oversized school uniform, she looked pitiful and weak. She smiled and said gratefully, “Thank you, big brother, but it’s okay. My mom will leave once she takes the money.”
Every word she spoke dug a deeper hole for Li Cuie.
Seeing that Sheng Xia wasn’t coming in, Li Cuie kicked the door panel. The already aging wooden door looked like it was about to fall over.
The place Sheng Xia lived in was already unsafe, and now the door was breaking. Some people watched with flickering eyes, thinking of who knows what.
Those living in this building were all people nearing the end of their ropes.
Seeing that the excitement was over, people began to disperse, planning to use this story as gossip later.
Once the people were gone, Sheng Xia closed the door. Her timid and helpless expression vanished instantly. She looked at Li Cuie, who was sitting arrogantly in a chair, and raised an eyebrow.
“So, old hag, you have business with me?”
Not only was Li Cuie stunned, but the ghosts in the live stream were also shocked. This was the first time they had seen Sheng Xia like this.
She had always been polite to elders, and even when dealing with Su Tong, she hadn’t been this blunt.
This attitude was…
Too damn satisfying.
[Host, get her! Scum like this needs a lesson!] The ghosts knew Li Cuie had stolen Sheng Xia as a baby. Although it was hard to understand how a child from a wealthy family could be stolen so easily by someone with zero connection to them, the criminal act was undeniable.
Once Li Cuie recovered, her face twisted, and she raised her hand to slap her. “What am I doing here? If Little Su hadn’t told me you were here, were you planning on never coming back?!”
Sure enough, it was Su Tong. Since direct confrontation didn’t work, he resorted to underhanded tactics. He knew what the original owner had endured in middle school; he knew it was her psychological trauma, yet he still brought Li Cuie here and spread rumors.
Sheng Xia’s level of disgust for him reached a new peak.
Sheng Xia caught Li Cuie’s hand and, without any mercy, threw her to the ground. “From the moment I left that house, we had nothing to do with each other. I don’t owe you anything. If you’re smart, you’ll leave now, and we’ll pretend we don’t know each other.”
Looking into Sheng Xia’s eyes, Li Cuie felt a subconscious chill, as if all her secrets had been discovered.
But years of bullying Sheng Xia had inflated her ego. Her hesitation lasted only a second before she scrambled up, hands on her hips, screaming: “Fine! You’ve definitely found a man out here, and now you dare to lay a hand on me!”
“You dare offend me now? Sooner or later, you’ll be begging me for help.” Sheng Xia’s ID card was in her hands. Li Cuie felt that without an ID, one couldn’t move an inch. She heard that one couldn’t take exams without an ID, so she felt completely secure. Furthermore, Li Cuie had never put Sheng Xia’s name on the household register (Hukou), using this as a way to threaten her.
This was a glaring plot hole in the story the fact that Sheng Xia didn’t have a household registration but it was this “invisible” status that allowed various forces to be unable to track her down later, highlighting the female lead’s mystery and the male lead’s power.
One could only say that the phrase “legal illiteracy” was written all over this book.
Sheng Xia sat in a chair and slowly began to boil water. “Your coffin money will be given to you eventually. Are you in such a hurry for it now?”
Li Cuie didn’t know whether to nod or shake her head. She launched into another string of curses, which Sheng Xia’s ears automatically filtered into gibberish.
“If you’re done talking, then leave. I need to study soon.” Sheng Xia looked at the steam from the cup, calculating the time and Li Cuie’s level of rage.
When she heard a set of steady footsteps, Sheng Xia suddenly splashed the boiled hot water onto Li Cuie’s hand. As a sharp, painful scream rang out, the footsteps downstairs quickened, accompanied by a faint rolling sound.
Before Sheng Xia could listen closer, she saw Li Cuie coming at her to pull her hair. Although it pained her to do so, Sheng Xia slammed the water cup onto the floor in front of her. Glass shards flew, one grazing her cheek with a stinging pain.
Li Cuie was scared witless by this. In that moment of her recoiling, Sheng Xia hair disheveled and face pale sat on the floor. At that moment, the door was pounded on loudly, and the already precarious door finally collapsed.
The Sheng Xia who was faking her pain suddenly felt a real pang of heartache. How much was it going to cost to replace that door?
When the “police officers” (or so she thought) walked in, Sheng Xia was about to let her tears fall with practiced ease, putting on the act of a pitiful little white flower, when she suddenly felt her facial expression freeze.
No… no way?
Sheng Xia looked up in disbelief. Seeing Lu Wanxing sitting in a wheelchair at the doorway, she slowly closed her eyes.
Her heart was filled with despair.
Help! How was she supposed to act now?!
