- Chapter 45 - "I will take responsibility for what happened last night!"
Xian Ning slept soundly, her rest so deep she didn’t even dream.
The glare of the sun on her face slowly brought her awake, and as her eyes fluttered open, memories flooded her mind. The plot points she had previously overlooked rushed back, weaving together to form a clear and tragic path.
A sharp ache throbbed in her temples, and for a moment, Xian Ning froze. Her eyes filled with a cold, shadowed resolve. She had naively believed that by staying out of the way, the male and female leads would find their destined happy ending. She was wrong.
A “moonbeam” or “cinnabar mole” only held its allure when it was just out of reach. Once obtained, it became nothing more than a mosquito splat on the wall.
[“Cinnabar mole” refers to a regrettable or unfinished experience from a past relationship.]
[ Moonbeam might illuminate a character’s path, reveal a hidden truth, or enhance a romantic scene.]

After successfully marrying the woman he had so obsessed over, Lin Qian had, of course, been incredibly doting and protective at first, as if she were a fragile treasure to be held in his mouth. But novelty always fades. Even with a goddess at home, it wouldn’t stop him from flirting with others outside. A solid foundation at home and a fleet of flings on the side—that was the life he truly wanted.
On the otherhand, Lu Yao wasn’t a girl who only cared about romance, but trapped within the confines of her marriage, her perspective slowly shifted. She became suspicious and insecure. Lin Qian, still the gentle gentleman, would look at her frantic questioning and simply say, “You’ve changed.” He pushed her to the edge of madness, then remarked casually, “How did you become this way?”
Xian Ning had always known his true nature, but she hadn’t expected him to be so vile. Was there even a point to this mission anymore?
Her long eyelashes flickered, and a strange light sparked in her dark pupils. Of course, the mission had to be completed. It just needed a different approach.
“What are you doing?!” 033 yelped anxiously.
Xian Ning stretched leisurely, her voice bright with cheer.
“Doing the mission, of course. Isn’t that what we’re here for?”
033 felt something was off but couldn’t put its finger on it. Still, it was prepared for this. It had known all along that Xian Ning would never follow the rules. It would be a failure of a system if it didn’t understand its own host by now. Other hosts were cunning and meticulous, always thinking ten steps ahead, while hers was impulsive and unpredictable. It gave the system a headache.
“You’re really not going to do anything… crazy?”
Xian Ning’s grin was full of mischief. “Don’t you trust me?”
As she spoke, she was drawn to a hint of red on the pillow beside her. Leaning in, she saw what looked like a lipstick stain. She had been summoned so suddenly yesterday that she had just wiped her face and rushed out. So whose lipstick was this?
Fuzzy fragments of memory flashed through her mind, and the cheerful expression on her face slowly crumbled. She touched her lips. “Who did I… kiss yesterday?” she mumbled.

Lu Yao peeled off her wrinkled clothes and stepped under the shower, letting the hot water cascade over her body. How could someone be so rude?
She touched her lips, a blush rising to her cheeks, her eyes soft and moist like peach blossoms in the steam.
Even though she was still angry about her kiss being stolen, she hadn’t wanted to get tangled up with the other person, so she had just rushed home. But the memory of that face kept surfacing, a strange feeling blooming in her heart, and the feel of their lips touching was impossible to shake.
Is a beta’s lips really that soft?
It was a question she couldn’t answer. She had never experienced anything like it. After her differentiation, her family had sent her to an elite Omega high school, where she had never met anyone of another gender. Betas weren’t supposed to have pheromones, so how was it that back then…
Lu Yao shook her head abruptly, wiping the water from her face and forcing herself to stop thinking about last night. The bathroom was thick with steam, blurring everything, and a quiet sense of longing bloomed in her heart, though she was still unaware of it.
After her shower, Lu Yao flopped into her soft bed, inhaling the faint, clean scent on the duvet before drifting off to sleep. It wasn’t long, however, before a knock sounded at her door.
Her eyes were still closed, and she frowned. “Who is it?!”
“It’s me, sis! Why are you home so early?” It was Lu Tiaotiao’s voice, full of an odd, suppressed excitement.
“When else would I be home? Go do your own thing and don’t bother me,” Lu Yao replied flatly. They were only two years apart and had grown up together, so Lu Yao knew exactly what her sister wanted: gossip. But she considered last night a fluke and had nothing to say about it.
“Oh, come on, sis, don’t be so cruel,” Lu Tiaotiao said, her tone softening as she started to plead. Lu Yao wasn’t buying it. She pulled the covers over her head and ignored her.
Lu Tiaotiao leaned against the door, and as she recalled what she had seen last night, her smile widened. Because Lu Yao was a superior omega, she was extremely picky about who she associated with, and most people found it difficult to even get close to her. The thought that she had slept on the same bed as someone else was simply astonishing!
But maybe she didn’t need to ask her sister for details. A mischievous look appeared on Lu Tiaotiao’s face. She had a plan.
*****
Lu Yao slept until the afternoon. She changed into comfortable clothes and ambled downstairs, her steps pausing at the first-floor landing.
Seeing her, Lu Tiaotiao gave a radiant smile. “You’re awake, sis.”
Lu Yao replied with a casual hum, her eyes fixed on Xian Ning, who was sitting next to her sister. Did she come looking for me because of last night? Does she want to tie me down? Lu Yao’s gaze turned cold. She walked into the living room, hands in her pockets, and sat down opposite the two women, her presence commanding the space.
Xian Ning found the person in front of her somewhat familiar but couldn’t place her. Out of politeness, she smiled and greeted her. “Hello, Ms. Lu. My name is Xian Ning.”
Lu Yao was taken aback. So she’s not here to ask for anything? “Hello,” she replied coolly, her expression guarded and distant. She was not easy to approach.
Feeling a bit awkward, Xian Ning sat up straighter. She wanted to woo Lu Yao, but she hadn’t expected to do it like this. The atmosphere was stifling. (╥﹏╥)
Lu Tiaotiao looked from Lu Yao to Xian Ning and back again, a knowing smile on her face. “Oh, come on, can’t you two relax a little? You look like you’re on a blind date.”
Xian Ning choked on her own saliva and coughed. Lu Yao shot her sister a warning glare, then turned to Xian Ning. “Ms. Xian, is there a reason you’re at my house?”
Xian Ning looked up at her, opening her mouth to speak but not knowing how to explain. Instead, she just pointed at Lu Tiaotiao. “You should ask your sister.” She had just been whisked away from the hotel and was still completely confused.
Lu Tiaotiao grinned, flashing her teeth. “I’m just doing what’s best for you, sis. You two slept together. If she just takes off without taking responsibility, what will people say about our family?”
Xian Ning was shocked. Lu Yao’s face went white. “Don’t talk nonsense!” she snapped at her sister.
Lu Tiaotiao turned to Xian Ning. “After you passed out last night, my sister was the one who took you to the hotel.” She didn’t have to spell it out. The hint was enough.
Xian Ning looked at Lu Yao, who was at a loss for words. “I took you to the room and then I left,” she said in a calm, controlled voice. “Nothing happened.”
“But when I went to look for you, you were hugging each other,” Lu Tiaotiao said, covering her mouth. “Oops, I said too much.”
Lu Yao was speechless.
Xian Ning was still in a daze, and Lu Tiaotiao poked her arm, giving her a pointed look. Xian Ning got it instantly.
She looked at Lu Yao once more, then stood up abruptly. “Ms. Lu,” she declared, “I will take responsibility for what happened last night!”
