- Chapter 4 - "You have to be responsible for me."
Xue Yingxian froze as if struck by lightning, her whole body numb. After a long pause, she finally said, “Are you out of your mind?!”
Her eyes were wide with shock and confusion, and her hand was trembling, a testament to how deeply shaken she was.
Who says I’m not? Xian Ning thought to herself, secretly shedding a tear. If it weren’t for this miserable favorability meter, why would she do something so completely disingenuous?
Xue Yingxian was indeed beautiful, but calling it love was a stretch. Still, with a beauty this stunning, there was no loss in a little bit of flattery. She had done this sort of thing plenty of times for past missions, so she was practically an expert.
When Xian Ning pulled out all the stops, her target always approved!
Xian Ning quickly accepted her reality and found a decent justification. With her decision made, she decided to fully commit to her persona of a “love-struck fool.”
She stared at Xue Yingxian, her feigned affection natural and sincere, as if she were truly looking at the person she loved.
“You don’t have to believe me, but I’m not going to give up.”
She said it with such earnestness that even she almost believed it.
Xue Yingxian felt something hit her heart, a strange, indescribable feeling. She slightly shifted her gaze and clenched her hand into a fist.
Lu Xian Ning was full of tricks. This must be another one of her schemes. These words of “love” were probably something she had said to countless others. There was no way she was a special case.
Xue Yingxian’s heart slowly went cold. Her gaze turned as icy as a winter wind, blowing nothing but shards of ice.
“Lu Xian Ning, you are truly a lost cause!”
The moment she finished speaking, Xian Ning took her hand.
Xue Yingxian: “?!”
Xian Ning grinned, showing off her straight, white teeth. Her voice was soft and sweet as she spoke.
“I know you hate me, but how can you control something like love? If loving you is a disease, then I’d rather be a lost cause.”
Xian Ning herself almost gagged at the words. It was all for the mission, but this was just too cringeworthy, enough to make your teeth ache.
Stupid angsty teen romance novels had ruined her!
Xue Yingxian had read plenty of romance novels in her youth, so she was no stranger to lines like this. She just never expected to hear them in real life, and from this person, no less.
If she had committed a crime, the law should punish her, not subject her to this torture from Lu Xian Ning.
Xue Yingxian couldn’t stand it for another second. She tried to pull her hand from Xian Ning’s grip, but the other woman held on with a death grip, making all of her efforts useless.
“Let go!”
The shout made Xian Ning flinch, and she pulled her neck back, but she didn’t let go.
They stared at each other for a moment until Xue Yingxian finally gave up.
“I won’t tell anyone about this. From now on, we go our separate ways and never interfere with each other again. I promise.”
Xian Ning sighed internally.
I want that too, but this negative favorability rating is making things very difficult for me.
An idea sparked in her mind, and Xian Ning began her performance.
“I know I’m not good enough for you, so I always hid my feelings. All the mean things I said and the trouble I caused—they were just desperate attempts to get your attention. I admit I was childish, but I couldn’t stand being a transparent nobody to you.”
“It wasn’t easy to say I love you, but now that I’ve been brave once, I won’t be a coward anymore. Just let me stay by your side. I won’t ask for anything else.”
Xue Yingxian still couldn’t pull her hand away. Maybe she had been pulling too hard, but now her entire palm felt hot.
When her eyes met Xian Ning’s—so bright and clear like the stars—Xue Yingxian’s heart gave a little flutter. A strange feeling swelled up inside her, something she had never experienced before.
It wasn’t just her palm that was hot; her heart was beating erratically, too.
“You…”
Her mouth was open, but no sound came out. Xue Yingxian didn’t know what to say. She had learned so many things and could manage a huge company without a problem, but in this situation, she was completely helpless.
The person who had constantly defied her and tried to make her fall into the mud was saying she loved her. Either she had gone insane, or the world had.
Seeing her frozen expression, Xian Ning knew her words were working. She leaned in close to Xue Yingxian’s ear and whispered, her breath soft and warm like a spring breeze.
“You should take responsibility for sleeping with me. Weren’t you excited that night?”
Xue Yingxian’s ears flushed red, her expression a mix of embarrassment and shame. Xian Ning pressed on while the iron was hot. “Our bodies are a great match.”
They were sitting by the window, and a sudden gust of wind blew through, scattering the bills on the table. They fluttered away one by one.
Xue Yingxian snapped out of her daze, yanked her hand from Xian Ning’s grip, and hurried out, her steps quick and frantic.
Xian Ning watched her go, a mischievous smile on her face.
“Running that fast in heels? Impressive.”
She turned to see Lu Han standing there, holding a bag with a Black Forest cake, the original owner’s favorite.
“Did you go looking for trouble with Miss Xue again?”
Xian Ning found Lu Han’s opening words very disheartening.
She let out a small sigh and squatted down to pick up the bills. “Look at you, talking as if I’m some kind of villain. Our conversation was completely friendly, thank you very much.”
Lu Han knew better. She had heard most of it.
Without a change in expression, Lu Han sat down and opened the cake box. “You disappeared so quickly, so I bought this for you when I went to look for you. Here, eat.”
Xian Ning put the money in her pocket and sat across from Lu Han, but she didn’t touch the cake.
“Sis, I don’t like Black Forest cake anymore.”
Lu Han looked surprised. “But you used to…”
“I just suddenly don’t like it,” Xian Ning interrupted with a smile. “People’s tastes change, don’t they?”
It sounded like she was hinting at something else. Lu Han remembered what she had overheard and her eyes grew a little deeper.
“Yes, they certainly do.”
Xian Ning looked at her expression, wondering if she had been too blunt. But she truly didn’t want to fake it. She had a physical aversion to that cake; just looking at it made her feel sick.
The atmosphere grew awkward. As Xian Ning tried to think of something to lighten the mood, Lu Han’s phone rang. Judging by her expression, it had to be about work. Her brow wouldn’t have been so furrowed otherwise.
“…Uh-huh… Okay… Got it.”
After hanging up, Lu Han sighed. “Something came up at work, so I have to go to the office. I can’t stay with you, sorry.”
“There’s nothing to apologize for. Work is important. We can go shopping anytime.”
Lu Han smiled. “My little piggy has grown up.”
Xian Ning puffed out her cheeks in protest at the nickname. “Don’t call me that! It’s embarrassing if my classmates hear you!”
Lu Han laughed and affectionately ruffled her hair. When her hand came down, she rested it on the back of Xian Ning’s neck in a natural, practiced motion.
Xian Ning didn’t feel anything was amiss and walked out with her.
Xue Yingxian didn’t know why she had run away. When she finally came to her senses, she was already in her car.
She gripped the steering wheel, her head in her hands. Her mind was a mess, and no matter how long she thought about it, she couldn’t figure out if there was any truth to Xian Ning’s words.
Her logic told her Lu Xian Ning was lying, but another voice in her heart said, What if Lu Xian Ning really does like her?
Considering their history, this possibility was remote, but the image of those bright eyes kept flashing in her mind. Every time she remembered them, her heart would clench, like she was on a roller coaster.
Lu Xian Ning, what exactly are you trying to do?
Xue Yingxian sat up, her brow furrowed and her eyes showing a rare hint of confusion.
Whatever. I should just head back.
Just as she started the car, two figures walked past—two very familiar figures.
Xian Ning was half-leaning on Lu Han, a radiant smile was on her face.
Why is she so happy? Xue Yingxian felt her mood inexplicably sour.
She slammed the gas, and the car sped off.
Xian Ning’s lips had curled up involuntarily when she heard Lu Han was going to transfer her some money. Just as she was about to thank her, a BMW roared past them.
Lu Han quickly pulled her back, eliminating the distance between them.
Xian Ning looked up at her, and Lu Han said softly, “Be careful.”
“Oh, right,” Xian Ning replied. She stepped out of Lu Han’s arms and continued walking.
Xue Yingxian glanced at the rearview mirror, her expression growing even more impatient. She let out a cold huff through her nose.
The car was so far away from her, was that really necessary?
Her phone rang. “Talk,” Xue Yingxian said.
Jiang Huai became cautious, speaking respectfully. “Madam, there are reports that Zhang Jiashang is using drugs. You need to come to the office as soon as possible.”
“Got it.”
Before he could finish, the call ended.
Zhang Jiashang was Xuanxin Entertainment’s top actress and had become the company’s spokesperson earlier in the year. This scandal would be extremely damaging to the company’s image.
Xue Yingxian felt a wave of irritation. Her foot almost hit the floor as she sped up.
Jiang Huai narrowed his eyes and rubbed his chin. “Who made her so angry?”
She drove at breakneck speed to the company, only to find that Xuanxin Entertainment had sent Lu Han to meet her.
The two women were of similar height and had equally powerful auras. Their handshake was a tense, silent struggle, and their assistants stood trembling, not daring to make a sound.
Their gazes locked, a silent, blade-sharp battle of wills.
Xue Yingxian’s lips curved into a smile. “So, President Lu is here to deliver some money?”
Lu Han smiled back. “Yes, that’s right. This happened so suddenly, it even interrupted a perfectly good date. Let’s not waste any time, President Xue. Let’s get down to business.”
She pulled her hand from Xue Yingxian’s grip. Her expression was poised and elegant, her confidence unwavering.
The smile on Xue Yingxian’s face disappeared. For some reason, the word “date” coming from Lu Han’s mouth sounded particularly grating.
She sat in the main seat and tossed a contract onto the table in front of Lu Han. “Ten times the liquidated damages. Not a single cent less.”
Lu Han had already reviewed the contract before coming. Ten times the damages wasn’t an issue, but when she had negotiated with the older Mr. Xue, they had agreed on three times.
“It seems your father didn’t tell you that we had already agreed on three times.”
Xue Yingxian curled her lip, her eyes filled with arrogance. “It was three times, but I’ve changed my mind.”
“Why?”
“No reason. Because I want to.”
