- Chapter 29.1 - She lifted up the clothes that were in the way...
This time, Xian Ning didn’t dream of those strange scenes or have any nightmares. She slept straight through until morning.
Wait, morning?
A faint, hazy white light greeted her eyes. Xian Ning held her hand in front of her face and could just make out a blurry outline.
She shot up from the bed, thrilled by the discovery.
“Another nightmare?”
A pair of arms wrapped around her from behind, a gentle massage easing the tension in her shoulders. Xian Ning turned to tell Qin Rong about her eyesight, but froze.
All she saw was a field of white, a wide-open neckline below, and a glimpse of a sleepy, stunning face above.
Qin Rong seemed completely at ease, leaning in closer. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
They were so close she could hear Qin Rong’s breathing. This proximity made everything clearer, and Xian Ning was terrified of giving herself away and creating an awkward situation.
Better not to say anything yet, she decided. This wasn’t the right time.
“No nightmare, I just… I’m just hungry.”
Xian Ning blurted out a random excuse and subtly looked away.
Feeling something was off, Qin Rong gently held her chin, making her face her. She studied her with a look of inquiry.
“Your eyes look…”
As Qin Rong examined her, Xian Ning’s heart hammered in her chest, terrified of being caught in her lie.
Qin Rong sighed. “Still the same. I guess we’ll have to try a different medicine.”
Xian Ning secretly let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Her eyesight must have only recovered a little, so it wasn’t obvious.
She’d tell Qin Rong later, once they were both properly dressed. For now…
Her eyes involuntarily drifted downward. Realizing how shameless her actions were, Xian Ning pulled free from Qin Rong’s grasp and scrambled to the edge of the bed.
“I have to use the bathroom!”
She ran out in a panic, her shoes on the wrong feet, knocking things over with a loud clatter.
Qin Rong sat on the bed, watching her vanish through the doorway. Her eyes narrowed slowly.
“So you can see again.”
It was only after she had already fled that Xian Ning realized her mistake. She was supposed to be a blind girl who struggled just to put on her shoes, and yet she had just run off as if her life depended on it.
What blind person walks with such a steady stride?
Xian Ning: (:з」∠)
Her vision was still hazy, as if a white veil covered her eyes, but she could see well enough.
The flowers in the courtyard were a riot of color, all vying for attention. Their mingled scents were pleasant, creating a sense of peace.
Xian Ning slowly began to identify the colors of the flowers. At that moment, she gave up. She had definitely been caught. It was time to confess.
Just as she was about to turn back toward the house, Qin Rong’s voice came from behind her.
“Why are you standing there? Do you need me to help?”
Xian Ning jumped. Her resolve to come clean instantly wavered. She didn’t dare look at Qin Rong’s face, so she kept her back to her.
“Junior Sister Qin, actually I…”
“What? Senior Sister, you’re speaking too softly. I can’t hear you…”
An arm wrapped around her waist, and Qin Rong’s body pressed against hers, her chin resting on Xian Ning’s shoulder.
A gentle breath tickled her ear, and Xian Ning felt her skin heat up. She flinched away slightly, her voice dry.
“My eyes seem to…”
“It’s inconvenient not being able to see, right? It’s fine, I’ll help you.”
With that, Qin Rong held Xian Ning’s waist with one hand and her wrist with the other, leading her toward the outhouse.
Huh?
After a few steps, Xian Ning decided she couldn’t just let herself be led. She turned to face Qin Rong seriously, and her eyes widened at what she saw.
What was she doing walking around the courtyard in a thin nightgown? What if someone came?
Seeing Xian Ning’s flushed eyes, Qin Rong leaned in close on purpose. “Why are you staring at me like that, Senior Sister?”
Xian Ning quickly averted her gaze. “I wasn’t… I wasn’t staring. My eyes can’t see, remember?”
“That’s right, your eyes can’t see.” Qin Rong’s voice dropped, becoming soft and gentle. “But it’s strange. The way you looked at me just now gave me the illusion that you could.”
She had missed another chance to be honest. Xian Ning felt a strong urge to bite her own tongue.
“I can go by myself. You should go put some clothes on,” Xian Ning said, her face flushed.
She pushed Qin Rong away and wobbled toward the outhouse, gripping the bamboo fence like a blind person.
Qin Rong stood there, unmoving, and after a moment, she spoke. “How did you know I wasn’t wearing clothes?”
Xian Ning stumbled, nearly falling on her face. She managed to steady herself, but she felt a gaze on her back that could burn a hole right through her.
“I… I guessed.”
“Did you really guess I wasn’t wearing anything? Then I guess you were right. Ha ha…”
Xian Ning’s head throbbed with embarrassment. She let out a strained laugh and hurried into the outhouse, leaning against the wall in regret.
One mistake led to another. If only she had told the truth from the start.
Qin Rong pulled her sheer nightgown closer and a faint smile touched her lips.
No one ever came to her place, and even if they did, they couldn’t get through the barrier she had set up.
She wouldn’t normally walk around half-dressed, but for some reason, she had today. It must be because she wanted to tease a certain flustered cat with a wandering eye.
The smile on her face widened as she turned and walked back inside.
Xian Ning lingered outside for a good while before finally going back in. Qin Rong had already prepared food for her.
Xian Ning peeked through the doorway, and seeing that Qin Rong was now dressed, she felt relieved and took her seat at the table.
Qin Rong didn’t eat mortal food, so the table full of nourishing dishes was all for Xian Ning. After eating her fill, she felt sleepy. She carried a rattan chair into the courtyard, found a shady spot, and watched Qin Rong practice her cultivation.
Qin Rong was already one of the top cultivators among the younger generation of the Jade Purity Sect, yet she practiced diligently every day without fail.
In comparison, Xian Ning felt like a complete slacker. She had no talent and didn’t work hard. It was no wonder she couldn’t even pass a simple trial after six years of cultivation.
As she watched, she grew drowsy. Xian Ning decided that as soon as she woke up, she would start cultivating. She would stun everyone on her next trial.
“Junior Sister, your sword dancing is so beautiful.”
Half-asleep, Xian Ning didn’t realize she had said her thoughts aloud. She shifted her arms to find a more comfortable position and fell back asleep, unaware of how long Qin Rong watched her after hearing her words.
In her half-dream state, she felt a hand softly stroking her cheek. The fingers were cool and calloused, a strange but pleasant sensation against her skin.
Xian Ning smacked her lips, grabbed the hand on her face, and used it as a pillow, drifting off to sleep again.
Qin Rong didn’t pull her hand away. Instead, she watched Xian Ning with a smile.
“Just like a lazy cat.”
Xian Ning wasn’t one to act on impulse, but the mission required her to improve. The next morning, she went to the most spiritually abundant area on the mountain to meditate. She absorbed the essence of the sun, letting it flow through her body to clear her meridians and strengthen her bones.
When Qin Rong woke up and didn’t see her, she was briefly alarmed. Then she remembered that Xian Ning’s eyesight had been restored, and her anxiety faded.
The barrier outside the courtyard was still in place, so Xian Ning must have gone out on her own. She would probably be back soon, as it was almost time for a meal.
After living together for a few days, Qin Rong had a good handle on Xian Ning’s routine. She got dressed leisurely and started preparing food for her.
Xian Ning’s spiritual energy was very thin, and it would always stop at the same place in her body. When it moved again, the energy would be even weaker than before.
Her body was like a leaky balloon that couldn’t hold spiritual energy.
This problem must have been present for a long time. It was the only explanation for why she was still an ordinary person after six years of cultivation.
Even a person with no talent would have gained something from constantly being surrounded by so much spiritual energy.
Xian Ning suspected the curse on her body was the cause.
It seemed it was time to confront Fan Hua.
She stood up, her eyes growing darker.
A gust of wind ruffled her skirt, and Xian Ning flew through the forest like a purple butterfly.
Rumble. Her stomach growled, and Xian Ning’s resolve instantly deflated. It was better to fill her stomach first.
Fan Hua was good to her, but if she was truly the one who cursed her, she might turn on her if she was found out. She needed to plan carefully.
When she returned, there was another spread of food on the table. Qin Rong prepared a new meal every day. Xian Ning looked at her and felt a strange sense of unease.
“What’s wrong? You don’t like today’s meal?”
Xian Ning quickly shook her head. “No, no. It’s just… I’m embarrassed. It’s embarrassing to have you take care of me all the time.”
Qin Rong walked over and sat down next to her, facing her. “I haven’t even told you what’s on the menu today, and you’re already making excuses. What if you really don’t like it?”
Xian Ning froze for a moment before replying, “I can smell it.”
Qin Rong let out a small laugh and leaned in closer, exposing her neck to Xian Ning.
“Then smell what perfume I’m wearing today.”
Xian Ning could only smell Qin Rong’s natural scent. She couldn’t make out anything else. She stared at the smooth, white neck for a few seconds before hastily looking away.
For a moment, she had wanted to bite it. She was going insane!
Her heart was thumping, her mind was dizzy, and the sound of Qin Rong’s breathing seemed to fill the air with a strange, alluring atmosphere.
Qin Rong sat back, a hint of disappointment in her voice. “It seems Senior Sister’s nose isn’t that sharp after all. You can’t even smell this.”
Xian Ning gave a nervous smile. “My apologies.”
The food on the table was tempting, but Xian Ning’s appetite was gone. To keep her “perverse” side from showing, she quickly picked up her chopsticks and devoured the food.
She was so full she couldn’t sit still, so she walked around the courtyard with her hand on her stomach. Qin Rong leaned against the door, her arms crossed, watching her with a smile she didn’t realize was there.
As Xian Ning turned for the third time, a familiar figure appeared outside the courtyard.
*******
Fan Hua stood there, her eyes passing over Xian Ning to lock with Qin Rong’s. Neither of them gave the other a pleasant look, as if they were about to fight.
Fan Hua had tried to come in several times but was stopped by the barrier. Qin Rong was acting like Xian Ning was her own private property, and it made Fan Hua inexplicably angry.
“Senior Sister, why don’t you come in?” Xian Ning asked.
Fan Hua retracted her gaze and looked at Xian Ning, her expression instantly softening. Her eyes crinkled with a smile.
“Little Junior Sister, can you see again?”
Xian Ning: “…!”
Damn it! She had forgotten to keep up the act again!
“No… no. Hehe, I just sensed you were here.”
Fan Hua stared at her for a few seconds, then laughed. “You can feel my presence from so far away? It seems you’ve been thinking about me.”
Xian Ning didn’t try to explain, just gave another awkward laugh.
Xian Ning’s reaction made Qin Rong unhappy. She was staying with her, yet her mind was on someone else. It seemed Qin Rong had been too good to her lately.
Qin Rong stood up and walked toward them. She put an arm around Xian Ning’s waist and leaned her head down, their faces were so close that they seemed to be whispering.
“Little Junior Sister.”
The soft, pleasant voice fell on Xian Ning’s ears, and half her face felt numb. She looked up at Qin Rong, waiting for her to continue.
Qin Rong smiled as she looked at her, leaning in even closer. “Nothing. I just wanted to call you.”
Xian Ning’s eyes were almost completely healed, allowing her to see Qin Rong’s expression much more clearly. Her reflection was mirrored in those clear, beautiful eyes, the dark pupils seeming to pull her in.
Time seemed to freeze. Neither of them spoke, only their light breaths intertwined, weaving a strange, intimate spell.
They were so close that to Fan Hua, standing outside the courtyard, it looked like they were kissing. Her expression darkened and her eyes were growing gloomy.
Wasn’t Qin Rong supposed to dislike Xian Ning? How could she…
Qin Rong seemed to sense her gaze and glanced in her direction. The warmth in her eyes vanished, replaced by a provocative lift of her eyebrow.
Fan Hua’s hand clenched into a fist and her nails slowly digging into her palm.
Qin Rong looked away from Fan Hua and said to Xian Ning, “Senior Sister Fan Hua is still outside. Should I let her in?”
Xian Ning came to her senses, quickly pushed Qin Rong away, and took two steps back, her face flushed.
Seeing the blush on her cheeks, Qin Rong’s earlier displeasure faded. She turned to Fan Hua. “Senior Sister, do you need something from me?”
She asked from inside the courtyard, with no intention of letting her in.
