- Chapter 72 EXTRA STORY 3 - Extra Story 3: Living Together (Part Two)
In Tang Ling’s imagination, once Tan Shiyi moved into her home, the two of them would surely be inseparable—doing everything together, sharing all sorts of intimate, affectionate moments.
What she never expected was that a certain uninvited “third wheel” would appear halfway through: Tang Doudou.
From the moment Tan Shiyi moved into the Tang household, Tang Doudou became the happiest little dog in the world.
Among everyone in the family, her favorite was undoubtedly Tan Shiyi. The moment she saw her, she would come bounding over with her tongue hanging out and tail wagging furiously, pawing at Tan Shiyi’s legs as if glued to her. Within just a few days, Tan Shiyi’s calves had several faint scratch marks courtesy of Tang Doudou’s enthusiastic greetings.
Tan Shiyi didn’t mind in the least, but Tang Ling’s heart ached to see it. She chased after Tang Doudou with a nail clipper, determined to trim her claws. Terrified by the enormous clipper, Tang Doudou bolted in every direction, sending the whole house into chaos.
In the end, it was Tan Shiyi who managed to catch her, holding her gently and whispering soothing words until the “nail-trimming operation” was finally completed.
Once her nails were trimmed, Tang Doudou regained her usual confidence, feeling clean, beautiful, and utterly charming again. She proudly hopped onto the bed, nestled herself in Tan Shiyi’s arms, and wagged her tail smugly at Tang Ling.
Tang Ling’s temper flared.
“Get down! Who told you you could get on the bed? Is that a place for you?”
Tan Shiyi immediately came to the little dog’s defense.
“She’s clean—she just had a bath. Let her stay. Why are you being so fierce with her?”
Having found herself under Tan Shiyi’s protection, Tang Doudou grew even bolder, rubbing against Tan Shiyi with exaggerated affection, then turning to bark triumphantly at Tang Ling.
Tang Ling could barely contain her frustration.
“This is exactly what they mean by ‘a doting mother spoils her child’! Look at what you’ve turned this dog into!”
Tan Shiyi’s cheeks flushed pink as she hugged Tang Doudou closer.
“She’s just a silly little dog who doesn’t know any better. Why are you even arguing with her? I like spoiling her—what’s it to you?”
The “silly little dog” barked loudly, as if agreeing with Tan Shiyi’s stance.
Tang Ling felt a wave of jealousy rise.
“Wife, don’t tell me you plan to sleep with her tonight too? We’ve been living together for quite a while now, and not once have you slept with me. This stupid dog’s been getting all the benefits!”
The “stupid dog,” fully aware that the term wasn’t a compliment, bared her teeth at Tang Ling in protest.
Tan Shiyi stroked the top of the dog’s head and said softly,
“Doudou just likes staying in my room. I can’t exactly kick her out.”
Tang Ling was speechless. A dog—how could she not be kicked out? Still, she didn’t dare complain too much, afraid of upsetting Tan Shiyi and being kicked out herself. So, she smiled ingratiatingly, sat beside her, and said,
“Come on, let me hold her too.”
But Tang Doudou, loyal and discerning, was not fooled by Tang Ling’s sudden sweetness. She growled and bared her teeth again, clearly rejecting the idea.
Tang Ling sighed in defeat, pointing at the little dog’s head.
“Good grief, Tang Doudou! Have you forgotten who your big sister is?”
Then she paused, realizing something was off. Right—this silly dog had made her mess up the family hierarchy completely.
Tan Shiyi tried to calm her down.
“Just give it a few more days. Once Doudou stops clinging to me so much, I’ll invite you over, okay?”
What could Tang Ling say to that? All she could do was hope the clueless dog would come to her senses soon and stop getting in the way of her love life.
But that “few days” turned into a whole week. By the time Bai Xi called Tan Shiyi to say her new apartment was ready, Tang Ling and Tan Shiyi still hadn’t spent a single night together.
When Tan Shiyi finally moved out, Tang Doudou howled pitifully, refusing to stop. Tang Ling was so afraid the dog might actually end up tagging along that she quickly told her mother to carry it away before it could follow them out the door.
At last, the two of them arrived at their new home—ready to start their real cohabitation life.
Bai Xi had found them an apartment in a high-end residential complex popular with young celebrities. The security was tight, so there was no need to worry about obsessive fans lurking around anymore.
The unit wasn’t large, just a bit over a hundred square meters, but it was more than enough for two people. It came fully furnished with modern decor and basic furniture, ready for immediate move-in.
Still, living there felt a little too much like staying in a hotel—it lacked that warm, homey feeling.
So, the two decided right then to redecorate and make the place truly theirs.
Under Ah Tong’s guidance, they went to an upscale furniture mall to start picking out new pieces.
The top priority, of course, was the bed.
Their tastes were usually quite similar—they both preferred a sleek, modern minimalist style. But when it came to choosing the actual bed, they found themselves at odds.
Tang Ling, who was used to sleeping on soft mattresses, fell in love with a cream-colored leather “cloud bed.” It had a low tatami-style frame and an admittedly steep price tag.
Tan Shiyi, on the other hand, preferred something firm. She picked out a simple solid-wood frame that was much cheaper and more practical.
The discussion soon turned into a full-on debate:
“It’s just a bed! No need to splurge like that. The one you picked is too low—you can’t even store anything underneath. Totally impractical.”
“We don’t need to store anything under the bed. Yours is way too hard—it’s uncomfortable.”
“Well, I can’t sleep on something that soft.”
“And yours has such sharp corners! What if we have a kid someday and they run into it?”
Tan Shiyi froze, surprised by Tang Ling’s words.
“A kid? That’s still far in the future.”
Tang Ling blinked.
“Wait—you don’t like children?”
Tan Shiyi blushed.
“I didn’t say that. I just think, maybe it’s a little early to be talking about that.”
Tang Ling said, “How is it too early to think about that? It’s only a matter of a few years anyway. If we have a daughter, that’s fine. But if it’s a boy—he’ll be impossible to handle. Just like Tang Doudou—she’d definitely bash her head open sooner or later! Oh, speaking of Tang Doudou, with those little short legs of her, she wouldn’t even be able to jump onto the bed you picked.”
Tan Shiyi was actually taken in by the story and crouched down to measure the height of the bed. “You think Tang Doudou really wouldn’t be able to jump up?”
Ah Tong couldn’t bear to watch any longer. “Alright, that’s enough! Stop right there. You’re supposed to be picking a bed, not fantasizing about your future! You two aren’t even officially together yet, and you’re already having kids? When you get married, you’re not planning to buy a new house? No new bed? Gonna live in that hundred-square-meter staff apartment for the rest of your lives?”
She walked over to another brand’s display bed and said, “Neither of you gets a say. Let’s go with this one. It’s not too soft or too hard, it looks good, the price is reasonable, great value for money. Come sit or lie down and see how it feels.”
Tang Ling and Tan Shiyi were properly scolded into obedience. They walked over to the display bed and lay down to try it.
“Feels actually kind of nice?”
“Then why don’t we just get this one?”
The two of them spent the whole afternoon wandering around the furniture mall until they finally finished picking everything out, waiting only for delivery.
When they got home, they were so tired they practically fell apart, collapsing onto the bed.
Staring blankly at the ceiling, Tan Shiyi murmured, “Honestly, when you’re this tired, any bed feels comfortable.”
Tang Ling pointed up at the ceiling. “Wife, that lampshade is so tacky. Should we replace it too?”
Tan Shiyi closed her eyes. “Don’t make me choose anymore. I’m exhausted.”
Tang Ling rolled over, leaning above her. “Exhausted already? But the night’s just getting started.”
Tan Shiyi pushed her away. “The night has started—I’m going to sleep.”
Knowing Tan Shiyi was truly worn out, Tang Ling didn’t press her. She flopped back onto her side and muttered dramatically, “Knew it. So tragic. Even a dog gets more affection than I do.”
Tan Shiyi matched her tone. “I haven’t seen Doudou all day. I wonder if she misses me.”
Tang Ling put on a mock villain’s grin. “It’s useless even if she does! Pretty lady, you’ve already been kidnapped by me—don’t even dream of seeing that little dog again!”
Tan Shiyi played along, “Great King, please let me go! I’ve got old and young to care for back home—I truly can’t stay to serve you, Your Majesty!”
Tang Ling pounced and started tickling her. “Who’s a Great King! I’m acting in a wuxia drama, not Journey to the West!”
Tan Shiyi laughed and struggled beneath her. “How am I supposed to know what you’re acting? Stop it, stop it—I surrender, alright? Hero! Great Hero, happy now?”
Between the laughter and the tussling, their clothes became a little disheveled. Tang Ling had Tan Shiyi pinned beneath her, her face tinged with warmth, breath uneven.
“No more, really no more, A’ling. Have mercy.”
Tang Ling froze. Tan Shiyi almost never called her “A’ling.” Usually, she just said her name outright. Hearing it now, soft and breathy, stirred something deep inside her.
Tang Ling lowered her head, resting against Tan Shiyi’s neck. Her voice came out low and muffled. “What am I gonna do, wife? I think I’m falling for you more and more. Wouldn’t it be amazing if I could stay with you forever?”
Tan Shiyi softly asked, “Aren’t we going to be together forever?”
Tang Ling sighed theatrically. “We should be—unless Tang Doudou decides to come between us.”
Their eyes met, and both of them burst out laughing. Then Tang Ling leaned in and kissed her.
