- Chapter 2 - A Bracelet? Or a Token?
Wen Ruanqing carefully pondered Huo Yinli’s words, opened her mouth slightly, and whispered, “Oh.”
Sister.
She gripped Huo Yinli’s bracelet tightly, refusing to let go, her eyes fixed intently on Huo Yinli’s face.
Stared at so intensely by Wen Ruanqing, Huo Yinli felt a bit flustered. Pursing her lips tightly, the tips of her ears quietly flushed red. She said in a cold voice, “Let go.”
However, her voice was far too childish, carrying absolutely no threat.
Upon hearing Huo Yinli’s words, Wen Ruanqing’s eyes instantly welled with tears. Biting her lip, she looked at Huo Yinli with a pitiful, aggrieved expression. After a moment of hesitation, she released her grip. “Ugh.”
“Don’t cry, little sister!”
Wen Tingyin immediately moved closer to Wen Ruanqing. Her own mouth puckered, looking as if she were about to burst into tears herself. She reached out her hand, carefully wiping away Wen Ruanqing’s tears. “Don’t cry, don’t cry. Big sister is right here.”
Held tightly in Wen Tingyin’s embrace, Wen Ruanqing sniffled. She kept her eyes on Huo Yinli. Because the pretty sister wouldn’t let her touch her, her nose felt itchy and sad, and before she could even react, her tears began to fall.
“Wah—”
Wen Ruanqing whimpered, her tears flowing uncontrollably, though she wasn’t crying loudly.
Seeing Wen Ruanqing cry made Wen Tingyin’s heart ache as well. Gently patting her younger sister’s back, her own voice trembled, “It’s okay, big sister is with you. They are just visiting our house for the first time, so don’t cry, okay? Don’t cry.”
Standing to the side, Huo Yinli looked at the two crybabies and completely froze. Her eyes shook with shock. Usually, both of her mothers were busy, and due to her own personality, she didn’t have any friends yet, let alone anyone crying right in front of her. It truly felt as though she had bullied her.
“…Don’t cry.”
Huo Yinli was at a complete loss. Watching Wen Ruanqing cry so aggrievedly, her crimson eyes looking back at her made her heart ache with a strange pang. Wen Ruanqing’s originally pale face had also turned flush from crying. She paced in place frantically for two steps before abruptly taking off the bracelet from her wrist the very next second. “Don’t cry.”
Her tone was stiff as she grabbed Wen Ruanqing’s hand, then clumsily put it on her. “Little sister, I’m giving this to you, so don’t cry anymore.”
As she spoke, Huo Yinli sniffled too, forcefully holding back her own tears. Seeing Wen Ruanqing’s dazed expression, she turned around and ran out.
Just then, Feng Ye, who had just finished making the milk, walked in. She happened to run into the sight of Huo Yinli sprinting away, and let out an “Eh?” of surprise.
“She left? Isn’t she staying for dinner?”
No one responded.
Feng Ye didn’t think too deeply about it and walked over to Wen Ruanqing’s side. Just as she was about to speak, she saw her two daughters hugging each other, their faces covered in tears. Feng Ye’s eyes narrowed, and she immediately knelt down, softening her voice. “What happened? Can you tell Mommy?”
She knew she needed to remain rational, but she instinctively suspected that Huo Yinli had made the two children cry.
Wen Tingyin explained, “Little sister was holding onto Huo Yinli’s hand. Maybe Huo Yinli felt uncomfortable and asked her to let go, and then little sister started crying. When she cried, I started crying too.”
Only then did Feng Ye understand what was going on. She let out a sigh. “It seems I misjudged Huo Yinli. How about we go over together later and apologize to her?”
“Mm!”
Wen Tingyin nodded vigorously. She turned to look at Wen Ruanqing and suddenly remembered that Huo Yinli had given her something before running off. She gasped in surprise, “That bracelet looks like it was given by Huo Yinli!”
Wen Ruanqing held the bracelet tightly. Tears still clung to her long eyelashes, and her little nose was red, making anyone’s heart melt just looking at her. She lowered her head and stared repeatedly at the bracelet in her hands. The piece featured several red gemstones interspersed with mahogany carved into the shape of bamboo. Strung together, it didn’t look gaudy at all; instead, it was exceptionally eye-catching.
Did I do something wrong?
“Little sister, do you like this?”
Wen Tingyin rubbed her cheek against Wen Ruanqing’s tear-stained face, guessing, “This bracelet is so pretty.”
Feng Ye also softly asked, “Does our little baby like this?”
No, I don’t want this.
Wen Ruanqing looked up and shook her head, letting out an “Uh” in denial. “Mommy, no.”
“No?”
Feng Ye lifted Wen Ruanqing into her arms and pulled out a tissue to wipe away the tears of both children. Seeing that their emotions had stabilized, she handed the milk bottle to Wen Ruanqing. “Then can you give the bracelet to Mommy?”
She reached out her hand to take it, but Wen Ruanqing instantly pulled her hand back, shaking her head anxiously. “No, Mommy.”
Because her emotions were fluctuating too heavily, Wen Ruanqing found herself unable to catch her breath after finishing her sentence. Terrified, Feng Ye immediately patted her back and gently eased her mouth open to let her breathe slowly. “Mommy doesn’t want it anymore. Let’s slowly breathe in and breathe out…”
Huo Yinli ran all the way back to her house in one breath. She collapsed onto the sofa, burying her face in her hands, her heart beating rapidly. Her wrist felt completely empty, yet she didn’t regret her choice. However, she still needed to inform her mother.
Huo Yinli pulled out her phone, opened the chat with her pinned mother, and pressed down on the voice message button. Her childish, crisp voice echoed through the empty house:
“Mommy, I went over to play at the neighbor auntie’s house today. I met a very pretty little sister. Sadly, I made her cry, so I gave her that bracelet. I hope you won’t be mad at me.”
Both of her mothers were away from home year-round, and their only contact was through the phone. However, her replies usually came in the middle of the night, so Huo Yinli had long since grown accustomed to waiting. She tossed her phone aside and jumped off the sofa to find someone to cook for her. “Auntie, I’m hungry…”
Wen Ruanqing slept for a long while after drinking her milk. Her health was poor, making her exceptionally prone to fatigue. By the time she woke up, it was already evening. She slowly crawled into a sitting position, her hair sticking up wildly from sleep, her head feeling thoroughly groggy. Turning her head to look at the scenery outside the window, she realized she hadn’t yet taken a proper look at this home.
Her room seemed to be the master bedroom belonging to her two mothers. It had excellent sunlight and a massive balcony outside. The balcony was filled with green plants and plenty of toys. Looking further out, she could see lush green leaves, which appeared uniquely massive—like downsized palm-leaf fans swaying gently in the air.
“Mommy,”
Wen Ruanqing called out softly, but no one answered. She sat on the bed in a daze for a while longer. Once she felt a bit more awake, she slowly shifted toward the edge of the bed.
The master bedroom was luxuriously decorated and incredibly spacious, featuring separate spaces for a vanity and a walk-in closet. The floor was polished so brightly that she could see her own reflection just by leaning over to look down. The overall style was grand, yet it wasn’t overly gaudy with gold, nor did it feel cold. Although the chandelier overhead was magnificent, one could easily feel that the space was filled with the warmth of everyday life.
Their marriage certificate hung on the wall above the headboard, and photos of her and Wen Tingyin were placed on the nightstand. Every sharp corner in the room had been wrapped in soft padding. Wen Ruanqing couldn’t help but marvel internally: They are truly wealthy.
In my past life…
Hiss.
A sudden, sharp pain pierced Wen Ruanqing’s head, and her vision blurred instantly. Her past memories were like popping bubbles, vanishing in the blink of an eye, leaving her completely unable to grasp them. Her mind was overwhelmingly occupied by the traces of her current life.
A one-year-old child couldn’t remember too many things because their brain capacity was overloaded. The headache brought tears to her eyes, and she lay flat on the bed for a long time before she managed to sit back up.
I need to get down.
Wen Ruanqing felt this desire intensely. The tall bed looked like a playhouse for adventures; if she could manage to jump down, it would be her first step toward success. A feeling called “curiosity” instantly flooded her heart as she slowly wiggled her body closer to the edge of the bed.
“Wow.”
It’s so high.
Wen Ruanqing tentatively extended one foot, but she couldn’t touch the ground at all, only seeing her own dangling leg.
“Mommy.”
Wen Ruanqing called out once more, but her voice was too faint to be heard by anyone.
She tried to climb off the bed again, this time turning her body around to slide down backward. Unfortunately, she couldn’t even walk steadily yet, and instead of sliding down successfully, she ended up stuck halfway—unable to go down or climb back up.
Huh?
“Mommy.”
Wen Ruanqing panicked. Her two short legs kicked wildly in the air as she kept crying out, “Mommy, Mommy.”
“You little dummy, big sister is here.”
Wen Tingyin had just finished her lessons and stopped by to check on Wen Ruanqing. In truth, there was a nanny waiting outside the door, but she hadn’t felt completely at ease. Sure enough, the moment she pushed the door open, she saw this tiny tot on the verge of falling off the bed.
“Why didn’t you call the nanny in?”
Wen Tingyin turned around, looking at the waiting nanny with an unhappy expression. “Didn’t you hear the sound?”
Feng Ye didn’t particularly like outsiders entering the bedroom, so the nannies usually waited outside the door. The door had been left slightly ajar, which was more than enough for the sounds inside to carry out. Wen Tingyin frowned. “Please go downstairs and call Mommy up.”
The nanny nodded and bowed repeatedly, immediately running downstairs to fetch Feng Ye, while Wen Tingyin began taking care of Wen Ruanqing.
“Little sister, next time you want to get down, you have to call for someone, okay?” Wen Tingyin ruffled Wen Ruanqing’s messy hair, liking her younger sister more and more the longer she looked at her. “Otherwise, I won’t know if you’re awake.”
After being placed safely back onto the bed, Wen Ruanqing kept her eyes fixed on Wen Tingyin. Hearing those words, she instantly smiled, grabbing one of Wen Tingyin’s fingers and instinctively shoving it toward her own mouth. “Ah.”
“No, you can’t eat hands.”
Although Wen Tingyin’s words were scolding, a bright smile graced her face. Her little sister’s smile was just too adorable.
“I’ll make you milk in a little bit.”
Wen Tingyin pinched Wen Ruanqing’s little cheek. It was a pity her little sister was too thin; there was barely any meat on her face.
Wen Ruanqing kept smiling. As she sat there, she couldn’t help but lean into Wen Tingyin’s embrace. Once she was securely held, she let out a tiny sigh
So tired.
Wen Tingyin was amused. “Look at you, sighing like an adult.”
Wen Ruanqing rested her head against Wen Tingyin’s face and didn’t make another sound, simply absorbing her sister’s warmth.
Feng Ye rushed upstairs shortly after, lifting Wen Ruanqing into her arms while holding Wen Tingyin’s hand. “I’ll replace that nanny later.”
Because of Wen Ruanqing’s health condition, Feng Ye was exceptionally attentive to her. If an accident were to happen due to someone’s negligence… Feng Ye would never be able to forgive it.
“Little baby, Mommy made meat soup. In a little while, let’s take your medicine first, and then we’ll eat dinner, okay?”
Feng Ye’s gentle voice echoed in Wen Ruanqing’s ears. The child wrapped both of her arms tightly around Feng Ye’s neck, let out an “Mm,” and then lifted her head to look forward.
They took the elevator downstairs. Wen Ruanqing’s eyes darted left and right, looking all around her. Before she could inspect things closely, the elevator doors slid open. Feng Ye carried her out. She didn’t even get a chance to look at the living room before her entire attention was captivated by Huo Yinli, who was sitting on the sofa.
“Fa!”
Bracelet!
Wen Ruanqing leaned heavily toward Huo Yinli’s direction, raising her arm high to display the red bracelet on her wrist, shouting, “Jie”
Sister!
