- Chapter 8 - You Are Not Allowed to Think of Anyone Else
She wanted to give in, but Yu Keqing didn’t want it, nor would she feel any joy because of it. She met her with silence.
A slight sting came from her neck. Lin Sheng despised it when she stayed quiet like this.
“Keep cooking for me in the future, all right?”
Yu Keqing stared at the patterns on the kitchen floor. The overwhelming scent of roses enveloped the surroundings, thick and suffocating, leaving her with nowhere to escape.
“All right.”
As long as it bought her freedom, as long as it let her see Xiao Bao, she would abandon her dignity. What did cooking a meal matter anymore?
Lin Sheng was delighted, her enchanting, fox like eyes brimming with an affectionate sheen.
She draped her arm over Yu Keqing’s shoulder, swaying her graceful figure. Her purple strapless nightgown added a touch of mature allure to her charm.
When those red lips pressed closer, Yu Keqing still instinctively flinched away, only to have her face firmly turned back by hands as white as scallion stalks.
The bloody scab on Yu Keqing’s lip was incredibly glaring.
Lin Sheng’s lips hovered against hers, her breath carrying a scorching, fragrant heat. “I’m sorry. Did I bite you too hard?”
Yu Keqing’s pupils dilated slowly from sheer shock. What did she just hear? Lin Sheng said sorry? Did Lin Sheng even know the word ‘sorry’? Had she ever learned it? Was she absolutely certain she hadn’t misheard?
Lin Sheng continued, “I didn’t mean to. I was just too angry. You met Wen Man, and you even found out that she and Jiang Shuang got a divorce. Jiang Shuang, Jiang Shuang, Jiang Shuang…”
Her thumb brushed against the corner of Yu Keqing’s lips, her tone suddenly turning ice cold as a wave of jealousy surged in the depths of her eyes.
“What is so good about Jiang Shuang? Is she truly worth your constant yearning? Keke, you are my wife. If you keep thinking about other people, I will lock you in the room forever, making it so you can only look at me, only speak to me, and only mark me. Don’t even dream of leaving me in this lifetime. You said you loved me, so keep doing it, love me until you die.”
She didn’t want to push Yu Keqing this hard either, but she had lost her once before. Now, she didn’t dare let go. She had to keep Yu Keqing locked firmly within her line of sight.
Terrified, Yu Keqing retreated, only to find there was no path left behind her.
Just how many times did she have to say it before Lin Sheng would believe her?
“I didn’t…” She shook her head through her tears, terrified that Lin Sheng would chain her in the room once again.
Lin Sheng licked away her tears. It was a seemingly tender action, yet it caused Yu Keqing’s terror to peak.
“It better be that way. If you dare lie to me…” She gripped the back of Yu Keqing’s neck. “You will never see Xiao Bao again. When that time comes, you’ll only be allowed to cry for me alone.”
Yu Keqing’s entire body trembled slightly from the hand gripping the back of her neck. Though no force was applied, she felt as if her life force were being throttled. She didn’t even dare breathe too heavily. Her long eyelashes fluttered frantically, she dared not raise her head, nor did she dare make eye contact. Her entire being exuded a tamed submission that was terrified to the bone.
Her fingertips clenched until they turned white, her shoulders freezing up as she braced herself for a familiar burst of rage.
Instead, lips tainted with the scent of roses pressed against hers. It was very gentle, bearing none of the anticipated pain, but the voice carried an unyielding command.
“Look at me, Keke.”
Keke was a childhood nickname that only the original owner’s parents used to call her. Yu Keqing had no idea how Lin Sheng had found out about it.
She was terrified, yet she didn’t dare disobey. Her eyelashes fluttered violently, and her entire body pulled taut.
Lin Sheng gently pinched her chin, teaching her word by word, slowly. “Say it, I am not thinking about anyone else.”
Yu Keqing’s throat tightened. Her voice was faint and hoarse, unable to conceal her dread. “I… I am not thinking about anyone else…”
“Say it again,” Lin Sheng’s breath dropped even lower, her gaze paranoid and domineering. “I will stay by your side obediently.”
Yu Keqing’s face went pale. Following her words, she repeated mechanically, “I will stay by your side obediently…”
Only then was Lin Sheng satisfied. Her thumb gently caressed Yu Keqing’s cheek, her tone sickeningly soft, yet wrapped in a pathological possessiveness.
“Keke is so good.”
“Remember what you said. If you dare run off again, or dare think of someone else,” Lin Sheng paused, a mesmerizing smile blooming across her bright, delicate face, “not only will I lock you away so you never see Xiao Bao, but I will also ensure Jiang Shuang can no longer survive in City A.”
The suffocating sensation of having her throat squeezed by Lin Sheng returned. Yu Keqing was terrified to the extreme, on the very verge of a breakdown.
“I’ll remember.”
Seeing her obedient and submissive appearance, Lin Sheng’s mood improved significantly. She didn’t push her any further, merely drawing her gently into her arms.
The movement was tender, yet it carried an inescapable possessiveness.
“Good girl. As long as you are obedient, I will give you whatever you want.”
“Stay by my side. Tomorrow, we’ll bring Xiao Bao over, and we’ll be a happy family of three.”
Yu Keqing froze her body and did not dare move an inch, letting out a mocking twitch of her lips only at an angle where Lin Sheng couldn’t see.
That night, Lin Sheng still slept in the same bed with her. Lin Sheng’s full chest pressed tightly against her back, its warmth radiating through the thin fabric of her nightgown. Her body remained stiff, and she endured the agonizing torment until the early hours of the morning before finally drifting into a hazy sleep.
The next day, Lin Sheng did not go back on her word and brought Xiao Bao over.
“Mommy!” Xiao Bao, who had been anxious for the past few days, plunged straight into her arms.
The moment she saw her daughter, Yu Keqing’s taut nerves finally relaxed, a gentle gleam rising in her eyes.
“Let Mommy see if you’ve lost any weight.”
She pulled back slightly, lowering her eyes to carefully examine her daughter’s little face, then touched her arms and shoulders.
Fortunately, she hadn’t lost weight. She had even grown a bit fairer, dressed in the uniform of her new school, a black pleated skirt, a white shirt with a butterfly collar, and a dark green blazer. A school badge engraved with her name and class was pinned to her chest.
This uniform looked exceptionally beautiful on Xiao Bao, making her look slender and tall.
Smoothing down her daughter’s two braided pigtails, she asked softly, “Are you adjusting well to the new school?”
Xiao Bao nodded obediently. “Mm!” She even took the initiative to tell her mother, “I even made a new friend.”
“Really?” Yu Keqing was pleasantly surprised. “Xiao Bao is so amazing, making a new friend at school so quickly.”
Being praised, Xiao Bao smiled bashfully and said, “Her name is Wen Ning. She is Auntie Wen’s daughter.”
Yu Keqing’s expression froze for a fraction of a second. “So it’s Wen Ning. Mommy even held her when she was a baby.”
“Xiao Ning showed me a photo from when we were little. The one where Mommy and Auntie Wen were holding us.”
The only photograph they shared, how could Yu Keqing ever forget it? It was taken right after she brought Xiao Bao back from the hospital. Lin Sheng was hosting a welcome banquet for Wen Man at this very house. Exhausted to the core, she had been shoved inside by Lin Sheng to wash up, and then forced to sit there putting on a brave face, holding the thin and tiny Xiao Bao who had just recovered from a serious illness.
“Xiao Ning invited me to go to her house this weekend to play,” Xiao Bao said.
Yu Keqing snapped out of her painful memories. Going to the Wen family home? She instinctively looked up at Lin Sheng, who had been leaning against the doorframe, watching them the entire time.
Would Lin Sheng agree to this?
Lin Sheng dropped her crossed arms and walked toward them. “I have an appointment to discuss business this weekend, so I’ll just have the driver take Xiao Bao there.”
She didn’t oppose Xiao Bao making friends with Wen Ning. Xiao Bao’s personality was too quiet, and having just arrived in a new environment, she desperately needed a lively and cheerful playmate like Xiao Ning.
Xiao Bao raised her eyes timidly, plucking up the courage to say, “I want Mommy to come with me.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, the surrounding air fell dead silent.
Yu Keqing’s body stiffened slightly, and she instinctively clenched her hands. She was both terrified that her daughter would displease Lin Sheng, and heartbroken by her daughter’s tiny sliver of anticipation.
Lin Sheng stopped right in front of them, lowering her eyes to look at Xiao Bao. Her gaze ran deep, making it impossible to read her pleasure or anger.
She didn’t agree, yet she didn’t outright refuse either. She merely reached out, her fingertips gently adjusting the collar of her daughter’s school uniform, the bowknot seemed a bit crooked. The movement possessed a nearly bizarre gentleness.
Only after a long while did she slowly raise her eyes to look at Yu Keqing beside her.
Her gaze fell heavily upon her, like a net slowly closing in.
“You want Mommy to go with you?”
Lin Sheng’s voice wasn’t loud, yet it carried her habitual sense of oppression, each word dropping clearly into the ears of both mother and daughter.
Xiao Bao shrank her shoulders, but she stubbornly nodded anyway, expressing her feelings in a small, anxious voice. “If Mommy is with me, I won’t be scared.”
Lin Sheng remained silent.
Yu Keqing’s heart beat frantically, and out of sheer instinct, she used her body to shield Xiao Bao behind her.
In the next second, Lin Sheng suddenly let out a low chuckle, though the amusement never reached her eyes.
She reached out and gently wrapped her arm around Yu Keqing’s waist, pulling the woman closer to her side. The force was tender, yet brooked no escape.
“Sure.” She lightly pinched Xiao Bao’s cheek, her tone sickeningly sweet. “Are you satisfied now?”
Xiao Bao hesitated, then nodded.
Yu Keqing’s heart, however, was sinking rapidly. Her intuition told her that Lin Sheng would never be this easy to talk to.
Xiao Bao’s bedroom was not on the second floor, but rather in the room with the sloped ceiling on the third floor.
Lin Sheng had ordered it to be meticulously decorated, making it look as dreamlike as a princess’s castle.
While she wouldn’t allow Tuan Tuan to stay in the master bedroom, she permitted Xiao Bao to sleep with the dog at night.
Xiao Bao hugged Tuan Tuan and wouldn’t let go. With both her mother and Tuan Tuan by her side, she was overjoyed, feeling as though she had returned to the days in Mang City.
“Let Xiao Bao play for a bit.” Lin Sheng used an excuse to lead Yu Keqing away from the room.
Yu Keqing didn’t want to leave, she wanted to spend more time with her daughter.
Lin Sheng gripped her wrist. The force wasn’t overly heavy, but it carried an unyielding firmness, and her gaze turned exceptionally dangerous.
Yu Keqing’s heart tightened. She didn’t want to go, not even a little bit.
“I… I want to stay with Xiao Bao a little longer.”
She spoke very softly, barely managing to force the words out through clenched teeth. Her entire body was wound tight, like a string on the verge of snapping.
Lin Sheng used her thumb to rub against her wrist, her expression turning unpredictable.
She wanted to lose her temper. She wanted to grab the back of Yu Keqing’s neck and ruthlessly block her mouth to force her into submission.
Yet, with her impending plans in motion, she forcefully suppressed the urge.
“All right.” She reluctantly released Yu Keqing’s wrist.
Yu Keqing retreated back into the room, her palms entirely slicked with sweat. Facing her daughter’s bewildered gaze, she immediately forced a smile.
She sat down beside her daughter and asked softly, “Will you be scared sleeping by yourself at night?”
Xiao Bao had always slept with her. Now that everything had changed, she worried her daughter wouldn’t get used to it and would be frightened.
Xiao Bao gathered Tuan Tuan’s fluffy body into her arms, rubbing her face against the dog’s head. After thinking it over, she nodded and then shook her head.
“I was really scared at first, but later when I thought of Mommy, I wasn’t so scared anymore.”
The house she had been staying in was exceptionally large, so large that her voice echoed. She hadn’t dared to sleep at night and had cried out of fear.
She just hadn’t told the truth because she didn’t want her mother to worry.
