After Becoming An Internet Sensation For Pretending To Be An Alpha, I Turned Into An Omega - Chapter 16
Wang Xi hadn’t expected An Leng to actually agree, and seeing she wasn’t joking, she had no choice but to explain, “But this is a music talent development show…”
“I can play the piano,” An Leng said, looking at Wang Xi. Her gaze seemed to ask, Do you have any other objections?
Clearing her throat, Wang Xi continued, “In that case, I’ll proceed with the contract negotiations. That’s the main project for now.”
“Besides that… the company plans to shoot a digital magazine for you, scheduled for Thursday.” Wang Xi glanced at Bai Yue. “Oh, and there’s the birthday concert on July 10th…”
She switched to a PowerPoint slide, displaying a data chart. “Whether to hold the concert will be decided by a fan vote. Based on the current results, the majority seem to support it.”
Bai Yue was happy to follow the company’s arrangements for such small matters, but she tentatively asked, “For my own birthday concert… could I use a song I wrote for the opening?”
“You’ve written songs before?” Wang Xi’s interest was instantly piqued. As Bai Yue’s manager, she was surprised to learn about this hidden talent.
“…I wrote them a long time ago. I’ll show you when I’m ready!” Bai Yue replied, glancing guiltily at An Leng.
Buzz—
Her phone vibrated loudly on the table. She’d set it to vibrate earlier for the meeting, but the vibration was so strong it made the whole table tremble.
Bai Yue quickly silenced it, but it rang again seconds later.
Resigned, she answered. The caller ID showed: Mom.
After excusing herself from the meeting, Bai Yue stepped into the hallway to take the call.
“What’s wrong?” Bai Yue whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to disturb her colleagues. Her parents usually avoided calling during work hours, fearing they’d interrupt her, so this unexpected call made her worry something serious had happened.
“We just saw it on TV—was that your song? They’re replaying it right now—” Zhao Ping said, even turning up the TV volume. “And we think we just saw Xiao Leng… Hey! Look! There she was again, just now!”
Father Bai eagerly chimed in from the other end of the line.
An Leng hadn’t expected her parents to call about this. She mumbled a vague “uh-huh” a couple of times, unsure how to respond.
“Little Leng is back?” Zhao Ping pressed.
“…Yes, she’s back.”
“You little thing! You were always talking about her when she wasn’t here, but now that she’s back, you don’t even tell us!” Zhao Ping scolded playfully.
The conference room door opened, and people began filing out. Bai Yue stepped back against the wall, turning slightly to let the crowd pass.
An Leng walked at the back of the group, Wang Xi explaining something to her while holding some documents.
“What are you talking about? Who was talking about her all the time?!” Bai Yue retorted.
An Leng had been looking for Bai Yue since she left the room. Now that she’d heard this, she took the documents from Wang Xi, leaned closer, and casually asked, “Still on the phone?”
Though her voice was soft, Zhao Ping, still on the line, clearly heard every word.
“Is that Xiao Leng? Is she with you?” Zhao Ping’s voice brimmed with delight. “Quick, have Xiao Leng pick up!”
Bai Yue used to frequently bring guests home for meals during that time, and Zhao Ping felt like she had gained a daughter. Later, when An Leng suddenly left, not only did Bai Yue feel heartbroken for a long time, but Zhao Ping also felt a lingering emptiness.
Bai Yue glanced back at An Leng and nodded, then firmly refused into the phone, “…No, she’s working right now!”
Hearing this, An Leng, paying no mind to Wang Xi’s thoughts, stopped beside Bai Yue and pointed at herself, “What? Is it about me?”
Whatever the person on the other end said, An Leng saw Bai Yue resign herself to the inevitable, as if facing death bravely, and handed over the phone: “…My mom wants to talk to you.”
An Leng froze. She had imagined countless scenarios, but she never expected it to be Zhao Ping on the other end.
The tension in An Leng’s heart tightened instantly as she answered the call, immediately launching into a flurry of greetings: “Auntie? How have you been? How’s Uncle doing?”
“Yeah, I just got back and haven’t had a chance to visit yet… Of course I miss your cooking, Auntie! Right, I haven’t been home either. The finals were just a couple of days ago.”
No matter what Zhao Ping said, An Leng smoothly continued the conversation, answering every question directly.
Bai Yue watched, stunned, at An Leng speaking so much for the first time.
“Come home… Let me think…” An Leng trailed off, hesitating, and glanced at Bai Yue.
Bai Yue frantically shook her head.
“We’ll both be really busy in a couple of days…” An Leng said.
Hearing this, Bai Yue wanted to give her a thumbs-up in encouragement.
Yes, exactly! We absolutely can’t go home together!
Zhao Ping clearly wasn’t going to give up on the phone. An Leng glanced at her watch and said, “…Then let’s make it this afternoon. It’s only a half-hour drive… Yes, I’ll drive.”
After hanging up, An Leng handed her phone back to Bai Yue, who was still in a daze. Shrugging, she said, “Auntie said she’s already bought all the groceries… I couldn’t refuse.”
Bai Yue numbly took back her phone, feeling like the sky was about to collapse around her.
Wang Xi had finally gotten around to asking Shi Xiaoxia yesterday, but Shi Xiaoxia, being fiercely loyal to Bai Yue, wouldn’t betray her friend. No matter how Wang Xi tried to threaten or bribe her, she only got three words in response: “Old classmate.”
After checking, Wang Xi found that the basic facts checked out, so she temporarily set the matter aside.
“Sis Xi…” Bai Yue turned to look behind An Leng, grasping at straws. “Do I have work this afternoon? Or tomorrow morning?”
“No,” Wang Xi replied firmly, fully agreeing with An Leng’s earlier words. “We’ll be really busy the next few days. It’s good to have time to go home.”
Bai Yue: “……”
“Do you need to go home and pack anything?” An Leng asked, already starting to plan the trip.
Bai Yue shook her head, resigned to her fate. “But I need to go to the mall first. I want to buy some things to bring back…”
When they saw An Leng’s car downstairs, Bai Yue instinctively got in the passenger seat.
At the mall, they split up.
She wandered around the first floor and bought a jacket for each of her parents.
When she called An Leng, she discovered her still shopping, bags in tow.
“So much?” Bai Yue exclaimed, shocked. She peered at the bags—bottles of liquor, green tea, health supplements, cosmetics…
And even… fish?
“Six is a lucky number,” An Leng explained, adding a box of gelatinous donkey-hide cake to her haul.
On the way home, An Leng, worried Bai Yue might get bored, opted for a playlist of pop songs instead of piano music.
Halfway through the drive, the songs played in order. But after one ended, the next didn’t start.
Driving on the highway, An Leng couldn’t safely check her phone, so she asked Bai Yue to skip the track.
Bai Yue did as instructed. Skipping tracks didn’t require unlocking the phone, and the next song quickly began.
But something felt off even before the lyrics started…
Sure enough!
The first line was the same song she’d sent An Leng on WeChat earlier!
