After Becoming a Scummy Alpha, the Movie Queen Just Wants to Pamper Her Wife - Chapter 88.2
Unable to stand the noise, she got up and left her seat. But the moment she stepped into the hallway, a tall, unfamiliar girl strode toward her. “Hey, can you call Meng Chuwu for me?” Her expression and voice were ice-cold.
“No.” Xi Xiaoyan sullenly refused.
“Ji Yi, what are you doing in our class?” A girl who had followed Xi Xiaoyan out of the classroom stepped forward and asked.
“Looking for Meng Chuwu.”
“You know her?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll call her for you.” The girl turned and bounced back into the classroom.
Xi Xiaoyan secretly regretted her earlier refusal.
Great. Before she could even get familiar with her new deskmate, she’d already offended one of her friends.
Before Meng Chuwu could emerge, Xi Xiaoyan sulkily headed toward the restroom.
She didn’t understand what was happening to her. Ever since she’d looked up and met Meng Chuwu’s eyes, she’d been inexplicably drawn to this new classmate. This feeling lingered all the way until school ended in the afternoon.
By then, nearly everyone had left even Chen Lanying, who had been watching their every move, had been forcibly dragged away by Chi Qing.
Xi Xiaoyan stared at Meng Chuwu, who was fast asleep on the desk, and wondered whether she should wake her.
As if sensing her thoughts once more, Meng Chuwu woke up the very next second. “Is school over?” she asked, stretching her arms.
The drowsy, sleep-laden tone of her voice sent Xi Xiaoyan into a fluster. She didn’t even have time to look away.
She just sat there, staring blankly as Meng Chuwu straightened up, then watched as she gently rubbed her eyes.
God, her fingers are so slender and long, and her skin tone is so lovely.
Xi Xiaoyan was spellbound, forgetting to answer.
“Everyone’s already left, huh.” Meng Chuwu smoothed her loose hair and turned slightly. “Xi Xiaoyan, why haven’t you gone yet?”
“Oh, I was just about to leave too.” Xi Xiaoyan felt a little flustered. She was sure the way she’d been staring must have looked utterly foolish.
“Were you waiting for me?”
Meng Chuwu’s voice had this infectious quality that made it easy to let one’s guard down.
And whether it was her gaze or the way she spoke, she carried this effortless closeness.
Hadn’t they known each other for less than a day?
Yet her tone inexplicably made Xi Xiaoyan feel as though they’d been friends for a long time. “Sort of. You’re new here, if you woke up and found everyone gone, you might get scared, right?”
“Xi Xiaoyan, thank you.” Meng Chuwu closed the textbook on the desk, took out her bag, and slipped the book inside.
“Why were you sleeping all day?” During class, Xi Xiaoyan had wanted to wake her several times, but she worried about how it might look to others she didn’t want to ruin her image. Besides, the teacher hadn’t said anything, so she suppressed her eager urge to help.
“You might not believe it, but I just got back to Ludao from Singapore. After all the chaos of the past few days, I’m exhausted.”
“Wasn’t the learning environment better in Singapore? Why come back?”
“My parents finished their work there.”
Xi Xiaoyan wanted to say more. Strangely, she didn’t want to part ways with her new desk-mate just yet.
Even though they’d see each other again tomorrow.
“If you ever have any questions, you can always ask me,” she said.
“Really? Any questions?” Meng Chuwu blinked her beautiful eyes, the faint red marks from where her face had been pressed against the desk still visible on her fair skin.
There was an inexplicable hint of danger in her tone.
Xi Xiaoyan noticed it but deliberately ignored it. “Of course, really.”
“Let’s go home.” Meng Chuwu stood up.
“Aren’t you going with your friend?” Xi Xiaoyan recalled the expressionless girl from that morning.
“How do you know I have a friend?”
“She came looking for you this morning. I heard.”
After a brief silence, Xi Xiaoyan added, “This might sound ridiculous, but I feel like we’ve met somewhere before.”
Meng Chuwu smiled softly. “The moment I saw you this morning, I felt the same way like déjà vu.”
“It’s such a strange feeling, isn’t it?”
Only after saying it did Xi Xiaoyan realize she might have been too eager.
Luckily, her new desk-mate didn’t know about her usual persona.
Luckily, Meng Chuwu responded to her enthusiasm. “Maybe we really did know each other before.”
“We must have.” Xi Xiaoyan paused, as if remembering something. “By the way, did anyone tell you why the seat next to me was always empty?”
“Privilege?” Before coming, Meng Chuwu had already heard from Ji Yi that this top-tier international high school was founded by the Xi family.
“Something like that.”
“Why did you agree to let me be your deskmate?”
“You could tell from Teacher Chao’s tone, couldn’t you?”
Meng Chuwu nodded. The empty seat next to Xi Xiaoyan had actually been quite conspicuous.
She sat by the window, which wasn’t the best spot for listening to lectures, but with just a turn of her head, she could see the sky and look down at the garden below. From that perspective, it was quite beautiful.
“Your eyes and your smile are very pretty.” Xi Xiaoyan had always been straightforward about her likes and dislikes.
“Xi Xiaoyan, I’m really glad to meet you.” Meng Chuwu extended her hand.
Xi Xiaoyan’s gaze lingered on her slender fingers for a moment before hesitantly reaching out as well.
The moment their hands touched, the realness of the contact and warmth made Xi Xiaoyan feel that everything happening today wasn’t a dream. The look in Meng Chuwu’s eyes made her heart race uncontrollably, her pounding heartbeat turning the tips of her ears visibly red.
Staring into Meng Chuwu’s eyes, Xi Xiaoyan suddenly had the illusion of falling in love.
But, she was a girl!
Hurriedly suppressing the fluster in her heart, Xi Xiaoyan replied, “I’m really glad to meet you too, Meng Chuwu.”
The two smiled at each other.
As they left the classroom, Meng Chuwu, walking ahead, turned back. “My friend’s name is Ji Yi. She’s also in her second year, in Class 10, and she’s a boarder.”
“Oh, I see.” Xi Xiaoyan nodded, secretly pleased.
This way, maybe they could walk home together every day from now on.
Even though “walking home together” only meant the distance to the parking lot, for her, it was already unprecedented.
Being overprotected by her family, the freedom to make friends had always felt like a luxury.
“Who did you usually walk home with before?”
“In my first year, I walked with my sister, but she’s graduated now.”
They chatted as they made their way toward the stairwell.
The school building was always quiet during lunchtime.
The sound of their footsteps echoed clearly in the hallway.
Xi Xiaoyan wore her hair in a ponytail and her school uniform.
Meng Chuwu had her hair in a bun and wore a long skirt.
Wherever they passed, it was as if a gentle breeze had swept through.
Soon, they reached the first-floor lobby.
Xi Xiaoyan sighed inwardly, why did the stairs, which had always felt so long before, seem so short today?
“Xi Xiaoyan, it’s raining outside.” Meng Chuwu turned back again.
Caught off guard, Xi Xiaoyan nearly stumbled into her, but luckily Meng Chuwu grabbed her arm to steady her.
Flustered, she pulled away. In that brief, accidental contact, she had caught a whiff of Meng Chuwu’s scent not perfume, but the natural, sweet fragrance unique to a girl, something distinctive, like a certain kind of fruit.
“S-sorry,” Xi Xiaoyan stammered, trying to compose herself.
Meng Chuwu didn’t seem to mind and just smiled. “Did you bring an umbrella?”
“No, I didn’t.” Xi Xiaoyan actually had one in her bag.
“Me neither.”
They stepped out of the school building.
The mid-September rain fell in a light drizzle, turning the warm air damp.
Standing under the covered walkway, they were about half a meter apart.
Meng Chuwu was a few centimeters taller than Xi Xiaoyan, so when she turned her head, her gaze naturally landed on Xi Xiaoyan’s seaweed-like hair.
Xi Xiaoyan’s hair looked fine and soft, dark as ink. The heavy workload of high school hadn’t diminished its stunning shine or volume in the slightest.
Before today, Meng Chuwu had been reluctant to transfer schools.
But her parents couldn’t bear to leave her alone in a foreign country and forcibly brought her back to Egret Island.
Standing at the podium in the morning, her gaze collided with Xi Xiaoyan, whose presence was as flawless as pure water. When she saw those bright eyes brimming with the essence of spring, she couldn’t help but smile, instantly feeling that transferring to a new school might not be so bad after all.
Especially when Xi Xiaoyan returned her smile.
That gentle ripple of a smile made Meng Chuwu feel as if she were in a beautiful dream, and so her own smile unconsciously grew even brighter.
The sharp-eyed Chao Zhi noticed the unusual connection between the two girls and couldn’t help but ask Xi Xiaoyan if Meng Chuwu could sit beside her.
Ah, perhaps the rest of high school would turn out to be wonderful after all!
Meng Chuwu gazed at Xi Xiaoyan’s lovely profile, thinking to herself.
As if sensing the other’s emotions, Xi Xiaoyan turned her head, and their eyes suddenly met.
Neither of them looked away.
On the contrary, they seemed to enjoy looking into each other’s eyes, delighted to exchange smiles.
This kind of prolonged eye contact, which normally wouldn’t happen between two unfamiliar people, was something they both instinctively treated as natural.
“Xi Xiaoyan, seeing you makes me feel incredibly happy.”
“Meng Chuwu, seeing you makes me feel, incredibly happy too.”
Silence settled between them as they quietly savored each other’s words and smiles.
