After Becoming a Full-Time Employee, I Signed a Romance Contract with My Ice-Cold Boss - Chapter 31
I Will Supervise You
Afternoon.
The sky was as clear as if it had been washed, without a single cloud for ten thousand miles.
A gentle, cool breeze seeped through the gap of the hospital room window that hadn’t been closed tightly, brushing against Jiang Fengyi’s heart and stirring up slight ripples.
Also stirred by the wind were the stray hairs on Xu Que’s forehead. She tilted her head slightly, holding her breath as she stared at Jiang Fengyi, seeking an answer.
Jiang Fengyi set down the porridge in her hand and replied in an equally soft voice.
“Is it not obvious?”
Hearing Jiang Fengyi admit it personally, fireworks seemed to explode in the depths of Xu Que’s heart. Her heart momentarily lost control, skipping a beat, until all she could hear was the “thump, thump, thump” of her own heartbeat in her ears.
Jiang Fengyi’s voice did not stop.
“I thought you had sensed it long ago.” She looked back at Xu Que. “Strictly speaking, it wasn’t entirely because of you; there were also my own reasons.”
“Over the years, she has exhausted the expectation for maternal love in my heart, time and time again.”
Xu Que took the initiative to grasp Jiang Fengyi’s hand resting on the edge of the bed, silently conveying warmth.
“You are wonderful.”
Xu Que was unwilling to see any trace of sorrow in Jiang Fengyi’s beautiful eyes.
“It is she who does not know how to cherish you.”
“You are beautiful, excellent, intelligent, kind… the number of people who want to walk side-by-side with you is countless. Do not completely negate yourself just because of one person’s indifference.”
She held the other’s hand and said sincerely.
“At least in my eyes, you are the best.”
“There is no one else.”
On the first day after Xu Que was discharged from the hospital, she chose to return to work at the company.
Jiang Fengyi did not quite approve: “Why not rest at home for a few more days?”
“If I stay cooped up at home all day, mushrooms will start growing on my head.” Xu Que finished changing her clothes and followed Jiang Fengyi out the door. “Being home alone is too lonely.”
In truth, it was because Xu Que couldn’t bear being away from Jiang Fengyi for so long; at the company, seeing Jiang Fengyi only required walking into her office.
“Besides, the residual medication in my system was metabolized long before I left the hospital. You don’t need to worry about me.”
The two shared a car to the company. When they were a street away from the office, Xu Que hurried to call out to the driver.
“Please stop here. I’ll get off here so colleagues don’t see you and me getting out of the same car.”
Although she regretted choosing to hide their relationship at the company, since she had promised, she would fulfill it seriously unless the other party changed their mind.
Jiang Fengyi lifted her eyelids to glance at her, her eyes revealing no emotion.
“As you wish.”
Xu Que got out as desired, and the car continued forward. She followed behind the car, walking with large strides. By the time she reached the office, a thin layer of sweat had appeared on the tip of her nose. She thought to herself that she could treat it as morning exercise; sharing a ride with Jiang Fengyi meant at least fifteen more minutes of time together every day.
Arriving at the twenty-second floor, He Shuyi, who hadn’t seen Xu Que for days, took the initiative to show concern: “I heard you were on sick leave these past few days. Have you recovered?”
“If you’re feeling unwell, don’t force yourself.”
Xu Que answered vaguely: “I’m mostly better.”
“The temperature has dropped recently; people with low immunity get sick easily. Don’t go out in the wind since you’ve just recovered,” He Shuyi reminded her, then turned the conversation to something else.
“I just noticed a very coincidental thing.”
Xu Que knew gossip was coming and hurriedly leaned in: “What is it?”
“During the days you were on leave, President Jiang also rarely appeared at the company. On the rare occasions she did show up, she’d vanish again quickly.”
“And today, you and President Jiang arrived at the company one after the other,” she winked at Xu Que, joking, “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you and President Jiang lived in the same neighborhood and agreed to set out together this morning.”
Xu Que gave a dry laugh: “Ha, ha, ha… that really is a coincidence.”
“How could a lowly employee like me afford to live in the same neighborhood as President Jiang? You think too highly of me.”
He Shuyi nodded: “You have a point.”
But logic aside, the two of them were just so “ship-able”!
Xu Que couldn’t quite read the light in He Shuyi’s eyes, but on the other’s face, she saw the words: ‘I will keep my eyes on you two.’
Xu Que quickly made an excuse about needing to handle work to escape the interrogation of that gaze. Because of He Shuyi, Xu Que didn’t dare enter the office to find Jiang Fengyi all morning, fearing she would discover yet another coincidence.
As evening approached,
Jiang Fengyi had already been wondering if Xu Que’s suggestion to get out of the car earlier was a subtle way of rejecting her; now, the suspicion seemed confirmed. For an entire day, Xu Que had not entered her office once.
Usually, she would come in and out at least a dozen times a day.
It seemed that after she had revealed her heart in the hospital, Xu Que had started to distance herself. Jiang Fengyi could think of no other reason. But didn’t she say that she was the best existence in her eyes?
Perhaps it was just a subordinate’s praise for a superior.
It was as if two little figures were fighting in Jiang Fengyi’s mind—one saying Xu Que was rejecting her, the other saying Xu Que might just be busy. The two thoughts intertwined, making it impossible for her to concentrate on work, causing her efficiency to drop significantly.
This couldn’t go on.
Jiang Fengyi pressed the internal line on her desk.
“Xu Que, bring the monthly financial reports in to see me.”
To untie the knot, one must find the person who tied it; Jiang Fengyi was skilled at finding the source of a problem to solve it. Since she couldn’t focus because of Xu Que, she would simply call the person in. If thoughts of her appeared in her mind, she would just look up at the person to eliminate the distractions.
She needed to restore her work efficiency and finish today’s tasks first.
Xu Que was not at her station; He Shuyi, at the neighboring desk, kindly answered the phone for her.
“President Jiang, Xu Que happens to be on her way to your office now.”
As soon as the words fell, the door in front of her was pushed open by Xu Que. Jiang Fengyi saw that to cover her tracks, she was even holding a document pretentiously.
“In here for a signature?”
After closing the door, Xu Que set the document down casually: “Not for a signature.” She walked straight toward Jiang Fengyi.
“It’s almost time to get off work. I came in to ask what you’d like to eat? I’ll book a restaurant in advance.”
Jiang Fengyi was still working: “Anything is fine.” With Xu Que in the room, her efficiency indeed improved a lot.
“If there’s nothing else, just sit here and wait for me to finish,” she said without looking up. “We’ll go eat together once I’m done.”
Xu Que simply brought her laptop in and worked alongside Jiang Fengyi. During gaps in her work, she would occasionally look up toward Jiang Fengyi. Every time she looked, the other was sitting upright at the desk, fully focused on the screen, completely unaware of Xu Que’s prying gaze.
“Hiss—”
Jiang Fengyi, who was working, suddenly clutched her stomach. A dull pain shot through her abdomen, forcing her to set aside her work.
“What’s wrong?”
Xu Que rushed to Jiang Fengyi’s side in one stride. Leaning down, she saw Jiang Fengyi gripping her stomach tightly and asked with concern: “Stomach discomfort?”
Jiang Fengyi curled her upper body in pain, her face pale, with beads of sweat breaking out on her forehead. She spoke to Xu Que in a raspy voice.
“Help… help me get the stomach medicine out of the medical kit.” She caught her breath. “The kit is in the bottom drawer of the desk.”
Without a second word, Xu Que quickly pulled open the drawer and found the medicine with precision.
“I’ll get you some water.”
The glass of warm water and the unwrapped medicine were brought to Jiang Fengyi’s lips simultaneously.
“Swallow one first.” She placed the pill in Jiang Fengyi’s mouth and personally held the cup, tilting it slightly to let her drink without choking.
After the pill was swallowed, Xu Que stared nervously at Jiang Fengyi: “Any better?”
Perhaps because of the warm water, Jiang Fengyi felt slightly better, but hearing Xu Que’s inquiry, she couldn’t help but find it funny.
“Medicine doesn’t work that quickly.”
Xu Que set down the glass and made a move to support Jiang Fengyi: “I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up.”
Jiang Fengyi didn’t take the stomach pain to heart: “It’s an old problem. It’ll get better soon after taking the medicine. You don’t need to worry too much.”
Hearing the other’s casual tone, Xu Que was uncharacteristically firm.
“No, you have to see a doctor!”
She stood right in front of Jiang Fengyi, acting as if she would refuse to leave if Jiang Fengyi didn’t agree. “You don’t take your own body seriously enough.”
In the end, Jiang Fengyi yielded to her. Xu Que prepared to call a taxi to the hospital, but Jiang Fengyi stopped her.
“Just have my private doctor come to the office.” She brought up a practical matter. “See if there are any restaurants nearby you want to eat at; we can go after the doctor sees me.”
“Let’s not eat out. Your stomach isn’t well. I’ll have the auntie prepare some light dishes, and we’ll go back to eat at noon.” She thought for a moment. “Actually, never mind. Just tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll cook for you myself.”
“On our way back, we can stop and buy the groceries.”
Xu Que planned everything methodically, and Jiang Fengyi listened with great interest. At this moment, they seemed like a real couple.
Jiang Fengyi spoke: “I want Chinese Yam and Spare Rib Soup.” Chinese yam is good for the stomach and is a common home-cooked dish, and home-cooked dishes were what Xu Que was best at.
Xu Que: “We’ll go to the supermarket later to buy some ribs and yam.”
While they chatted, the doctor arrived at the office and performed a basic consultation and examination on Jiang Fengyi.
“President Jiang, you must have regular meals at fixed times. I suggest eating more easily digestible foods, such as millet porridge, Chinese yam, soft noodles, steamed egg custard… Avoid spicy, greasy, and cold foods.”
Jiang Fengyi listened perfunctorily; she knew she couldn’t do it—meetings, business trips, being busy with work… any of these could cause her to delay her meal times. What she couldn’t do, she treated as if she hadn’t heard.
On the side, Xu Que listened exceptionally seriously, carefully recording the family doctor’s words.
Xu Que: “Is there anything else?”
Doctor: “It’s not advisable to lie down or sit for a long time immediately after a meal to avoid reflux. I suggest a 15-20 minute walk to aid digestion.”
After the doctor confirmed there was nothing serious, he soon departed.
The medicine Jiang Fengyi had taken began to take effect, and her pale face gradually regained its color.
“I’m fine now.”
Jiang Fengyi logged out of her account, turned off the computer, stood up, and said to Xu Que: “Let’s go. We’ll buy the groceries and go home to eat.”
In the office, Xu Que gazed at Jiang Fengyi for a long time. Before the other could begin to wonder if something was wrong with her appearance, she said word by word:
“From now on, I will supervise you.”
“Supervise whether you are eating your meals on time.”
