After Becoming a Full-Time Employee, I Signed a Romance Contract with My Ice-Cold Boss - Chapter 30
Is It Because of Me?
“Is that so?”
Jiang Fengyi stared into Jiang Xuan’s eyes, searching for any sign of realization or remorse. Unfortunately, no matter how hard she looked, the truth was that she could find none at all.
She stopped hoping and asked as if performing a routine duty: “Mother, are you still refusing to bring the person back?”
Jiang Xuan deliberately feigned ignorance: “I told you, I sent her away long ago.”
Jiang Fengyi looked at her and stopped speaking, her eyes filled only with profound disappointment.
The phone kept close to her body vibrated once. Jiang Fengyi closed her eyes and opened them again; clarity had returned to her gaze, and she no longer looked at Jiang Xuan.
She nodded toward Ke Fan, who was at the very front: “Let’s go.”
Leading the remaining bodyguards, Jiang Fengyi bypassed Jiang Xuan and swept away. The direction she headed was exactly where Jiang Xuan’s car—the one holding Xu Que—was parked.
Jiang Xuan panicked now and hurriedly blocked Jiang Fengyi’s path: “Where are you going?”
Jiang Fengyi paused for a moment but did not stop her pace: “Where I go seems to be none of my mother’s business.” She tilted her head back slightly. “Restrain her.”
Having said that, she stopped lingering and followed closely behind Ke Fan, her mind focused only on finding Xu Que.
The captain of Jiang Xuan’s bodyguard team had sent away everyone except her own trusted confidants. Following Ke Fan’s instructions, she waited in this secluded location for them to arrive.
Soon, she spotted Jiang Fengyi.
“President Jiang, over here!”
The subordinates were startled by the captain calling her “President Jiang.” Following her gaze, they realized it was the other “President Jiang.” They hadn’t expected that, after all the circling around, they were still working for the Jiang family.
Thus, they also followed suit and greeted the new “President Jiang.”
“Cut the small talk,” Jiang Fengyi said, her face revealing a rare expression of anxiety. “Take me to find her first.”
“President Jiang, follow me,” the bodyguard captain reacted first. “This way.”
The captain had specifically cleared out outsiders just so her own people could show their faces in front of Jiang Jiang Fengyi.
“Please don’t worry, the person is lying safely in the car; she hasn’t suffered.”
“Lying down?”
The bodyguard captain didn’t know if Jiang Fengyi knew the inside story and reported truthfully: “Your mother drugged her; she is still unconscious.”
Jiang Fengyi hadn’t expected Jiang Xuan to hold such contempt for the law.
“Besides the drugging,” her expression grew solemn, “what else did Jiang Xuan do to her?”
“She originally wanted us to put her in a suitcase,” the bodyguard captain was not very satisfied with her own acting skills and scratched her head awkwardly. “We pretended we couldn’t lift it, so she gave up on the idea.”
Jiang Fengyi remained silent for a long time. Beneath that heavy countenance, one could not tell what kind of stormy waves were surging.
Jiang Xuan’s matters would be handled last; the priority now was to find the person.
Finally, the bodyguard captain stopped in front of a dilapidated van and spoke to Jiang Fengyi behind her.
“The person is inside.”
The car door opened.
It was empty.
Jiang Fengyi could no longer maintain her outward composure.
“Where is she?”
Twenty minutes ago, Xu Que, lying in the back seat of the car, secretly squinted her eyes open a crack.
She didn’t understand why the people carrying her intentionally pretended they couldn’t lift her, or why they relaxed their guard and let her continue lying in the back seat. Even now, no one was sent to watch her, leaving her all alone in the car.
Whether they were too confident in their own strength or simply looked down on her too much, Xu Que had no way of knowing.
She also didn’t know if they had seen her hands hidden behind her back, which had already broken free from the ropes.
Taking advantage of the moment when no one was around, Xu Que slowly moved her body, huddled under the window, and raised her eyes to observe the situation outside.
Still no one!
They wouldn’t actually leave the van used to kidnap her unlocked, would they?
Under Xu Que’s hopeful gaze, she softly pulled the car door.
It actually wasn’t locked!
Now is the time—
RUN!!!
After confirming that no suspicious figures had appeared nearby, Xu Que put forth the same desperate effort she used for the 800-meter physical exam back in school, launching herself forward like a bullet.
Regardless of why they had relaxed their guard, she had to seize this opportunity to escape this place.
The roar of airplanes sounded from the sky from time to time. Xu Que suspected she had been transported to an airport, and the closest airport to Jiang Fengyi’s home was in Nancheng.
Xu Que ran in the opposite direction from which the car had traveled. The further she ran, the louder the roar of the planes became, and the cacophony of crowds gradually reached her ears.
She swore she had never loved the noisy sound of a crowd as much as she did at this moment.
The exit is right ahead!!!
A body that had mistakenly ingested drugs was, after all, affected. Xu Que, who usually wouldn’t even be out of breath after 800 meters, was already sweating profusely after running for just this short while.
Her body felt like noodles that had been soaked for too long; she couldn’t stop herself from going limp. Xu Que was running entirely on sheer willpower.
Almost there!
Her vision was a blur, but she vaguely saw human figures.
“He… Help!”
The person collapsed before the sound of her voice did.
Before hitting the ground, she seemed to catch the scent of night-blooming cereus.
The wind was light and the clouds were clear.
Xu Que was woken up by the sound of cicadas outside the window and slowly opened her eyes. The sun was just right outside, intruding into the room through a crack in the glass window and spilling onto the snow-white thin quilt in front of her.
It was a bit hot; Xu Que’s forehead was sweating slightly. She kicked away the quilt that had been tucked tightly around her, finally feeling a lot cooler.
She looked around. Aside from the essential living facilities, there were only some medical instruments.
Is this a hospital?
But why did it look like a luxury hotel, and why was there only one hospital bed?
Before she could figure it out, the door handle of the room was turned.
With a “click,” Xu Que saw Jiang Fengyi appear before her.
She thought to herself: So that burst of floral fragrance I smelled before fainting wasn’t an illusion!
Jiang Fengyi approached carrying a lunch box: “You’re awake.” She asked with a concerned tone, “Are you still feeling uncomfortable anywhere?”
She pulled a chair to sit by Xu Que’s bedside and laid out the food from the meal box one by one on the bedside table.
“I was worried you wouldn’t have an appetite when you woke up, so I simply asked the auntie to cook some porridge for you.” She held the steaming bowl in front of Xu Que.
She asked warmly: “Would you like to drink some now?”
It was hard for Xu Que’s entire soul not to be bewitched by such a gentle Jiang Fengyi.
Even if she were holding a bowl of poison, Xu Que feared she would nod without hesitation.
Jiang Fengyi stirred the porridge in the bowl with a spoon and asked seemingly casually: “Do you want me to feed you?”
Xu Que nodded blankly.
The upward curve of Jiang Fengyi’s lips was clearly the same as when she first pushed open the door, yet Xu Que felt that at this moment, Jiang Fengyi was in a much more pleasant mood than a few minutes ago.
She scooped a spoonful of porridge and gently blew a breath on it: “Come, be careful, it’s hot.”
Xu Que took a mouthful. The scalding hot porridge danced on the tip of her tongue, and after several rounds of tossing in her mouth, it was swallowed in one gulp.
“It’sh… It’sh delicious.”
Even with her tongue slightly numbed, she didn’t forget to provide full emotional value.
“It’s too hot,” Jiang Fengyi set the bowl down. “Let it cool for a while before drinking.”
Xu Que looked at her with innocent eyes: “You… you don’t want to feed me anymore?”
“I…”
Knock knock knock—
Someone was knocking on the ward door.
Jiang Fengyi’s unfinished words were suddenly interrupted by the sound.
“Enter!”
The bodyguard captain and Ke Fan walked in. Seeing Jiang Fengyi with a faint smile on her face, both widened their eyes in unison, looking at Xu Que on the bed in amazement.
Both wanted to know what kind of magic this person possessed to be able to coax the normally unsmiling President Jiang into being so happy.
They couldn’t help but think of yesterday…
They really didn’t want to experience President Jiang’s expression from yesterday ever again. Every time they thought of it, their hearts trembled with fear; it was simply the precursor to a coming storm.
When Jiang Fengyi discovered there was no one in the car, her face had darkened instantly.
She had questioned coldly: “Where is the person?”
The bodyguard captain, never having seen President Jiang in such a state, hurriedly explained: “The person was still here before I left.” She searched inside, outside, and under the car, finding only a set of ropes.
“President Jiang, the person you are looking for might have untied the ropes herself and run away…”
“Might?” Jiang Fengyi clicked her tongue. “I don’t want to hear ambiguous words; I want an accurate result!”
“Tell me, can we find her today or not!”
The bodyguard was startled, and the thing in her hand almost slipped and fell.
Jiang Fengyi reached out and took the rope the bodyguard had found: “Not only was she drugged, but her hands were tied with this rope?”
The bodyguard bit the bullet and answered: “Ye… yes…”
A trace of regret flashed deep in Jiang Fengyi’s eyes. Had she not involved Xu Que, the girl wouldn’t have had to suffer all this.
It was all due to her own conceit, thinking she had everything under control.
Jiang Fengyi said sternly: “Go find her now!”
The people surrounding Jiang Fengyi scattered like birds and beasts, escaping quickly. An angry Little President Jiang was even scarier than the previous President Jiang throwing a tantrum!
Even Ke Fan, who had been constantly staring at the computer screen, began to engage in physical activity.
Jiang Fengyi wasn’t idle either, searching for that familiar figure in the vast sea of people at the airport like looking for a needle in a haystack.
When Xu Que appeared on her own, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. The bodyguard took a secret peek at Jiang Fengyi; seeing her still wearing a cold and silent expression, she immediately lowered her head.
Sigh, the boss’s thoughts are truly hard to guess.
Today was the same.
Although she, standing in the ward, didn’t know how Xu Que had coaxed President Jiang into a better mood, it didn’t stop her from thinking the person on the bed was impressive.
Ke Fan, beside her, thought the same.
Xu Que felt uncomfortable being stared at by two sets of eyes and shifted her body closer to Jiang Fengyi.
“They are…?”
Before they could answer, Jiang Fengyi explained warmly: “They are the people who helped me find your whereabouts.”
Xu Que thanked them sincerely.
Ke Fan remembered the purpose of her visit and spoke up before the bodyguard: “The medical records have been forged, and the private nursing home is ready to receive the patient.”
The bodyguard followed closely behind her: “I took people to block the Jiang house early this morning, but even now, I haven’t seen President Jiang…”
She really wanted to slap herself; she still hadn’t corrected her way of addressing her.
“…even now, there hasn’t been a sign of Jiang Xuan.”
Jiang Fengyi said calmly: “She isn’t at the Jiang house. Go directly to the Zhao house to pick her up.”
She continued to stir the porridge in the bowl.
“Make sure to send her to the ‘nursing home’ to ‘rest’ her body properly.”
“Yes,” the bodyguard had already scouted in advance. “This nursing home is strictly managed. Without the consent of family members, mental patients are absolutely not allowed to go out privately.”
And Jiang Fengyi was Jiang Xuan’s only family member.
The three of them did not avoid Xu Que during their conversation; she, sitting halfway up on the hospital bed, heard the entire thing.
Jiang Fengyi was not stingy with her praise for her subordinates: “Well done. I’ve asked the finance department to give you a bonus; go back and check if it has arrived.”
The two said in unison: “Thank you, President Jiang!”
With the new boss being so generous, they felt even more motivated to work.
After the people left, Jiang Fengyi picked up the bowl of porridge that had cooled down enough, scooped a spoonful, and held it to Xu Que’s lips.
“It’s not hot now. Want some more?”
Xu Que’s gaze remained fixed only on Jiang Fengyi’s face. She opened her mouth several times, but no sound came from her throat.
After several attempts, she mustered the courage and asked softly.
“You did all this… is it because…”
“Is it because of me?”
The hand hanging at her side quietly clenched into a fist. Fortunately, it was covered by a layer of the thin quilt—just like the love in her heart, which she only allowed herself to know.
