After Becoming a Full-Time Employee, I Signed a Romance Contract with My Ice-Cold Boss - Chapter 26
You’re Teasing Me Again!
Jiang Fengyi stuffed food into her mouth as fast as she could.
The food wasn’t exactly piping hot; it was just as Xu Que had said—if she didn’t eat it now, it was going to get cold.
“Not eating on time leads to stomach problems,” Xu Que continued, using the serving chopsticks to place more food into Jiang Fengyi’s bowl. “From now on, I’m going to supervise your meals.”
It was true. When Jiang Fengyi was busy with work, she often forgot to eat, or she’d just grab a few bites of whatever was at hand to get by.
If Xu Que hadn’t been nagging her to eat today, she probably would have skipped lunch entirely. With one meeting following another, she likely wouldn’t have remembered to eat until everything was finished.
Jiang Fengyi cleared her mind and focused on eating, only then realizing that the frequency of Xu Que entering her office had increased significantly.
A thought occurred to her, and she asked, “Don’t you want to keep the news of our marriage hidden from outsiders? Aren’t you afraid people will get suspicious if you’re in and out of my office so much?”
“Suspicious?”
Xu Que spoke as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “Isn’t it normal for a subordinate to go into a superior’s office?”
She said with total confidence, “Don’t worry, no one suspects there’s anything going on between us.”
Jiang Fengyi thought of the meaningful look Wu Qi had given her before leaving. “Are you sure?”
Xu Que nodded confidently.
Jiang Fengyi didn’t bring the matter up to her, simply saying, “Alright then.”
After accompanying Jiang Fengyi through lunch, Xu Que rested her chin on her hand and looked at her. “Do you want to take a short nap?”
Jiang Fengyi sat back down at her desk. “I don’t have the habit of napping.”
“If you want to sleep, you can go into the lounge. There’s a bed in there; it’s more comfortable.”
“I’m not sleeping either,” Xu Que said, switching hands to prop up her chin. “I want to keep watching you.”
Jiang Fengyi forced herself not to look at her, focusing her gaze instead on the proposal on her desk. The characters on the A4 paper seemed to come alive, crawling across her heart like ants.
“This is the office, there are many outsiders around,” Jiang Fengyi said, trying to find a topic to distract herself. “What if someone hears you?”
Xu Que now deeply regretted her choice to hide their relationship when Jiang Fengyi had asked for her opinion back then.
After all, she hadn’t expected to fall so deeply in love with Jiang Fengyi at the time. Back then, she had simply thought about taking the money and leaving without causing any extra trouble.
As it turned out, she was reaping the seeds she had sown.
Xu Que muttered in a voice only she could hear, “If someone hears, then they hear.” Right now, she wished everyone knew.
Jiang Fengyi, who was working a distance away, predictably didn’t hear clearly. “What did you say?”
“I said, work is never-ending. You should take a break.”
Xu Que walked over and pulled Jiang Fengyi toward the lounge. “You’ve been busy since early this morning; even a body made of iron couldn’t take it.”
When she was pressed down onto the bed by Xu Que, Jiang Fengyi was still thinking about the feasibility of the project in the proposal. But as her head sank into the soft pillow, her thoughts gradually slowed down.
Before long, her eyelids began to fight to stay open, her breathing leveled out, and Jiang Fengyi drifted into dreamland.
Watching her fall asleep by the bedside, Xu Que thoughtfully turned up the room temperature and pulled the folded duvet over Jiang Fengyi.
Midway through the motion, she pulled her hand back. She tossed the duvet into a neglected corner and turned to go to the outer lounge area, bringing back the orange knit blanket she had gifted her from the sofa.
The sunflower blanket carried not only Jiang Fengyi’s scent but her own as well. She liked the smell of their scents mingling together.
Holding her breath, Xu Que slowly draped a corner of the blanket over Jiang Fengyi.
Whether by accident or design, the most brilliantly blooming sunflower landed right over Jiang Fengyi’s heart.
This month, Xu Que not only received her salary from the company but also an extra bonus from Jiang Fengyi.
“What is this?”
Looking at the balance that had appeared on her phone’s banking app, it was already enough for her to buy a luxury flat in the city’s core district in full.
Jiang Fengyi had seen Xu Que comparing the prices of prosthetic limbs several times, calculating if this month’s salary plus her previous savings would be enough.
“We agreed before signing the contract; if you do well, I’ll give you a bonus. This is the bonus for last month. You earned it.”
“This… this much?”
Xu Que had never seen so much money in her life. It was significantly more than what was written in the agreement.
“Are you really giving it all to me?”
Jiang Fengyi took the phone from Xu Que’s hand and turned off the screen. “It’s all yours. Take it with peace of mind.”
“As long as you stay by my side for a month, you can receive another month’s bonus.”
The excitement in Xu Que’s heart was beyond words. She couldn’t help but rush forward and hug Jiang Fengyi tightly. “That’s wonderful!”
In her excitement, she spoke her true feelings. “I really want to stay by your side for a lifetime!”
Jiang Fengyi’s body went stiff the moment she was pulled into the embrace. Her face brushed against the other woman’s hair, and a familiar scent filled her nose. She was so close she could feel the pulse thrumming in Xu Que’s neck.
Sweetness welled up in her heart, but it was quickly masked by bitterness.
She was happy that Xu Que had said she wanted to stay by her side forever, yet she lamented that she could only use money to bind the person to her.
Is she only willing to be by my side because of the money?
She didn’t even have the courage to ask the question.
After pulling the woman into her arms, Xu Que realized belatedly what she had done. Her palm froze against Jiang Fengyi’s back, unsure whether to pull away.
She stole a glance at Jiang Fengyi’s expression. Seeing that she wasn’t angry, she quietly moved her hand away and stood up straight again.
The source of warmth moved away, and Jiang Fengyi felt it immediately. She lowered her gaze, her long eyelashes concealing her hidden thoughts.
As she walked out of the office, Xu Que had no idea what was on Jiang Fengyi’s mind. She was busy contacting Director Su Mei at the orphanage to tell the children the good news.
Even after setting aside enough for her needs, there was still plenty of the bonus left. Xu Que didn’t spend it recklessly; she already had a plan for the remaining money.
He Shuyi looked up during a gap in her work, twisting her stiff neck, intending to slack off for a bit. She glanced sideways at Xu Que’s working state—she was staring intently at the computer, completely unaffected by the outside world.
“Has she changed her nature? Am I the only one thinking about slacking off at work?”
After watching for a while and seeing that Xu Que had no intention of turning around to acknowledge her, He Shuyi had no choice but to go to the pantry alone.
When it was time to clock out, He Shuyi left with her pre-packed shoulder bag. Before leaving, she glanced toward the office; Xu Que was still working seriously.
She withdrew her puzzled gaze, unable to understand why Sister Wu had assigned Xu Que so much work.
After finishing her overtime, Jiang Fengyi turned off the company lights as she left.
In the darkness, the light from the computer screen reflected off Xu Que’s face, casting a cool tone.
Jiang Fengyi was surprised. “Why are you still at the company?” She turned the lights back on.
Xu Que took the opportunity to shut down the computer. “Waiting to go home with you.”
She naturally walked to Jiang Fengyi’s side and spoke like a typical couple. “Let’s go, let’s go home.”
Xu Que’s clothes and daily necessities were still at Jiang Fengyi’s house. Both had tacitly avoided the topic of her moving out, so Xu Que had naturally stayed on long-term.
Inside the car, where it was just the two of them:
“What do you want to eat tonight? I’ll cook for you!” Xu Que was ready to show off her skills.
In the passenger seat, Jiang Fengyi rubbed her aching eyes. “You’ve been tired all day too. Let’s eat what the auntie cooked tonight.”
“I’m not tired.”
“Wait until the weekend to cook for me!”
“Alright then.”
When they got home, the food prepared by the auntie was already laid out on the dining table. After washing their hands, they began their meal.
Halfway through, Xu Que suddenly stood up and walked toward the door.
Jiang Fengyi looked at her and asked, “What is it?”
“Something I bought has arrived.”
Jiang Fengyi assumed it was a personal item Xu Que had ordered, so she didn’t press further and continued eating the food in her bowl.
It was strange; even though it was the same type of food, she just preferred what Xu Que made. Was her cooking really better than the professional auntie they had hired?
The door opened and closed.
Jiang Fengyi heard Xu Que’s footsteps approaching her.
She looked up and saw Xu Que walking into the dining room holding a bottle of eye drops.
“You bought eye drops?” she asked. “Are your eyes uncomfortable?”
Xu Que shook her head.
She didn’t return to her seat but instead walked over to Jiang Fengyi.
“When we were coming back, I saw you rubbing your eyes constantly. I guessed they might be sore from a full day of work, so I bought these.”
“They are a bit sore.”
She unscrewed the cap and asked, “Shall I help you?”
“Um…”
Jiang Fengyi didn’t move, sitting in her dining chair and tilting her head up slightly.
The warm yellow light of the dining lamp shone on her slender neck, making it hard not to look. Indeed, it was very hard for Xu Que to look away from that skin as smooth as congealed fat.
Until Jiang Fengyi’s clear, cold voice asked:
“Didn’t you say you were going to help me?” Why was she just standing there frozen?
“Right away!”
Xu Que leaned forward, eye drops in one hand, while the other reached toward Jiang Fengyi, using two fingers to gently pull her eyelids apart.
She bent down, leaning in closer.
“Your eye color is so light…”
Being so close, Xu Que’s heart was thumping violently. She had to find something to talk about to ease her nervousness.
“There’s a tiny red mole under your left eye.”
The finger that had been holding her eye open suddenly dropped to that red mole, giving it a light pinch as if trying to pick it up.
“Mm…”
A low hum escaped from deep in Jiang Fengyi’s throat.
She said she was going to give her eye drops, but instead, her hand was wandering all over her face.
Xu Que was incredibly quick to apologize, speaking before Jiang Fengyi could say a word. “Sorry, my hand just got an itch.”
This time, her hand stopped wandering and her eyes stopped roaming. She concentrated fully on helping Jiang Fengyi with the eye drops.
She coaxed softly, “Open your eyes, look up~”
“Yes, just like that~”
“Don’t blink, not done yet.”
“Good girl, you’re doing great~”
Focus can make a person more charming, and when combined with Xu Que’s soft, coaxing voice, the woman beneath her felt so shy she wanted to avoid Xu Que’s gaze.
But right now, she was circled in the other’s arms, with a hand cradling the back of her head to keep her from escaping.
Jiang Fengyi was forced to accept Xu Que’s hot breath and tender words. As long as she followed Xu Que’s instructions, praise flowed from the other’s mouth as if it cost nothing.
Someone who didn’t know better would think she had achieved some monumental feat rather than just getting eye drops.
Jiang Fengyi was thin-skinned and felt embarrassed by the constant praise.
She finally cut off the source. “Stop talking!”
Xu Que looked at her with a hint of grievance. “Am I not even allowed to speak?”
Jiang Fengyi’s face flushed. “You’re teasing me again!”
