After Becoming a Full-Time Employee, I Signed a Romance Contract with My Ice-Cold Boss - Chapter 25
A Secret Kiss
“Did you see it?”
Jiang Fengyi stared at the rainbow and nodded silently. The faint halo spanned across the stream; though it had only two spectators, it stood there steadily in the silence.
Below, the stream continued to flow. The gurgling sound of water constantly washed over Jiang Fengyi’s ears, and all her complicated emotions drifted away with the current.
Jiang Fengyi enjoyed this moment of stillness; her chaotic thoughts finally found peace.
“It’s so beautiful here!” she praised softly.
Xu Que immediately replied, “I discovered it by accident. Every time I’m in a bad mood, I come to watch the rainbow.”
“But you can’t see it every time. If the weather is bad, the light is wrong, or if you’re just unlucky, you might miss it.” She smiled faintly. “It seems we are lucky enough today.”
As she finished speaking, she turned to look.
Jiang Fengyi stood at the foot of the rainbow, tilting her head slightly. The golden halo fell upon her face, and her light-colored pupils rippled with golden-brown light under the sun.
Xu Que couldn’t help but murmur softly, “It really is beautiful…”
Jiang Fengyi was praising the scenery, but Xu Que was praising the person. She slowed her breathing and stopped moving, terrified of disturbing Jiang Fengyi.
When they left, Jiang Fengyi kept looking back, reluctant to go.
“If you like it, we can come often,” Xu Que said, checking her phone and smiling. “The weather has been good lately; there’s a high probability of seeing the rainbow.”
Under the bright sun, Xu Que’s smile was even more precious than the fleeting rainbow.
“Okay.”
Jiang Fengyi and Xu Que returned to the office on the same day.
He Shuyi immediately ran to her colleagues: “See what I told you? Didn’t they return to the company on the same day? I knew I was right!”
A colleague muttered, “That’s just too many coincidences.”
He Shuyi felt frustrated by their lack of insight: “Coincidences? When there are this many, it’s not a coincidence anymore!”
The two of them were flirting so blatantly; why was she the only one in such a large company who noticed? She was bursting with observations and had no one to vent to.
Xu Que walked out of Jiang Fengyi’s office with a face full of smiles, looking more like she was on vacation than at work.
He Shuyi asked, “In such a good mood?”
“Work makes me happy.”
He Shuyi reached out to touch her forehead: “Are you crazy?”
“No fever… so why are you talking nonsense?”
Xu Que tilted her head to dodge her: “Go away, you’re the one talking nonsense.”
She sat back at her workstation and began the day’s tasks. Once she finished processing the company documents, she checked the time; it wasn’t quite time to clock out yet.
Xu Que clicked onto the official website for prosthetic limbs to pre-select a replacement for Yuanyuan. Once her salary hit her account in a couple of days, she could pay for it immediately.
In contrast, Jiang Fengyi was buried in work from the moment she returned, moving through back-to-back meetings. All the issues Wu Qi hadn’t had the authority to handle over the past few days had piled up for today.
At noon, when it was time for the lunch break, He Shuyi proactively invited her: “Want to go to the cafeteria together? I heard the new omurice is good. Shall we try it?”
“Sorry, I have a lunch appointment.”
As she spoke, her eyes instinctively flicked toward Jiang Fengyi’s office.
He Shuyi understood immediately: “No problem, I’m fine eating alone.”
“Let’s go together next time if there’s a chance.”
He Shuyi didn’t know when that “next time” would come. She figured it wouldn’t be anytime soon. After all, these two seemed stuck together whenever they had a free moment, excluding everyone else.
“Then I wish you a pleasant lunch with President Jiang.”
“How did you know I was with—”
He Shuyi interrupted her, pointing two fingers at her own eyes: “Because I have eyes. You practically have ‘Dining with President Jiang’ written on your face.”
Xu Que blushed: “Is it that obvious?”
“Eh, not too obvious,” He Shuyi answered strictly. “After all, nobody else besides me has noticed you have a crush on President Jiang.”
Xu Que: “A… a crush?”
He Shuyi gave her an encouraging look: “So many people in the company have a crush on President Jiang, but you’re the only one brave enough to take action. Go for it, I’m rooting for you!”
“And I can see President Jiang thinks highly of you. You definitely have a chance to win the beauty’s heart!”
Xu Que thought: Thanks, but I’ve actually already held her.
Once her colleagues had mostly left, Xu Que didn’t hesitate. She pushed open the door to Jiang Fengyi’s office unimpeded.
The executive assistant, Wu Qi, was also staying late to work and hadn’t left yet.
Hearing the sound, Jiang Fengyi raised her cold eyes toward the door. The moment she saw Xu Que, her icy gaze instantly warmed up.
“It’s getting late, you go eat first. I can handle the rest,” Jiang Fengyi said, then spoke to her computer screen, “You all continue.”
“Alright, President Jiang.”
Before leaving, Wu Qi glanced at Xu Que.
Xu Que’s eyes held no one but Jiang Fengyi. Now that the outsider had left, she no longer hid her affection, heading straight toward Jiang Fengyi.
Jiang Fengyi made a “stop” gesture and silently mouthed words to Xu Que.
Xu Que leaned in, staring at the other’s lips and whispering the words back: “Still… in… a… meeting…”
Oh, oh, oh. Having decoded what Jiang Fengyi wanted to say, Xu Que stopped bothering her. She tiptoed over to the lounge area to wait, not making a single sound.
Getting bored while waiting, Xu Que took the sunflower knitted blanket on the sofa—which showed signs of use—and folded it neatly. She also straightened the sofa cushions.
Seeing a few of Jiang Fengyi’s long hairs on the blanket, Xu Que patiently picked them off one by one. Leaning so close, she couldn’t help but catch the scent Jiang Fengyi had left on the fabric.
She could imagine it: Jiang Fengyi, tired from work, reclining on the sofa with the thin blanket over her waist, her movements eventually causing the blanket to wrap completely around her.
At the thought, Xu Que wished she could possess the blanket and take its place, accompanying Jiang Fengyi to sleep.
After folding the blanket, Xu Que looked up and saw Jiang Fengyi was still busy, so she ordered a meal to be delivered to the office.
She waited quietly for a long time. The food arrived, and the delivery driver called her to come downstairs to pick it up, yet Jiang Fengyi still hadn’t stopped at her desk.
Xu Que light-footedly brought the food back. This time when she opened the door, Jiang Fengyi didn’t even lift her head, her eyes fixed on the screen.
She walked right up to Jiang Fengyi. Only then did Jiang Fengyi, who was in the middle of an online meeting, look up. Moving out of the camera’s range, she mouthed, “What’s wrong?”
Xu Que mouthed back: “You need to eat first”
Worried she was speaking too fast for Jiang Fengyi to understand, Xu Que spoke very slowly, making exaggerated shapes with her mouth for every word. It nearly made Jiang Fengyi laugh.
“Soon…”
She mimicked Xu Que, opening her mouth wide to frame the words.
“This is the last online meeting…”
This sentence was quite long, and mouthing it took too much time. Jiang Fengyi, ever efficient, reached out and pulled Xu Que down toward her side while remaining off-camera.
She breathed the words directly into Xu Que’s ear.
Having finished, Jiang Fengyi let go, intending to return to the screen. However, she found herself held back by Xu Que, who remained bent over close to her.
“Tempting me and then trying to run?”
Xu Que leaned close to her earlobe, exhaling a warm breath. The jade-white earlobe instantly turned a deep, blood-red.
Jiang Fengyi’s other hand, resting on the keyboard, quickly hit the mute button. She spoke crossly, “I said I’m still in a meeting!”
“You have your meeting; I’m not doing anything.”
“Then why are you…”
“Why am I what?”
Xu Que teased her on purpose, continuously blowing air against Jiang Fengyi’s ear. Seeing the small mole beneath Jiang Fengyi’s left eye flush red, she finally, reluctantly, pulled back.
“Finish your meeting quickly and come eat. The food’s going to get cold.”
As she spoke, she gave the other’s earlobe a playful, light nip as punishment, then straightened up and moved away before Jiang Fengyi could react.
“You…”
“This is the office, show some restraint!” Even though Jiang Fengyi was angry, she didn’t forget to keep her voice down.
The rare sharp tone in Jiang Fengyi’s voice didn’t make Xu Que back off; instead, it fueled the mischievous streak in her heart. She couldn’t quite describe the feeling—hearing Jiang Fengyi snap at her didn’t make her feel guilty; it only created a lingering itch in her soul.
Xu Que said brazenly, “Why don’t you scold me a few more times?”
“Get away from me right now!”
During the latter half of the meeting, Jiang Fengyi’s face remained flushed—half from anger, half from embarrassment. It was only today that she realized Xu Que didn’t seem to know the meaning of the word “shame.”
Fortunately, across the screen, the people on the other side couldn’t see the redness of her face. Finally reaching the end of the grueling meeting, Jiang Fengyi shut down the computer immediately and glared at Xu Que.
Xu Que had been guarding the spread of food, waiting for her to finish. Upon receiving the glare, she leaned in again.
“Come and eat!”
Afraid Jiang Fengyi’s stomach would suffer, she had already scooped the rice and unwrapped the chopsticks for her.
Jiang Fengyi walked over and took the chopsticks.
“Don’t you have anything to say?”
“Me?” Xu Que had just scooped her own rice when she heard the question. After thinking for a moment, she replied, “I’ve had food from this place before; it’s reliable. It should suit your taste, try it.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about!”
How could someone flirt one moment and then act like nothing happened the next, leaving her trapped in the lingering shyness of the moment?
“Oh?”
“Ooh~”
Xu Que held her bowl and leaned toward Jiang Fengyi. Before the other could react, she quickly kissed her other earlobe.
Now, both ears were equally red.
“Alright, let’s eat.”
The dampness on her ear reminded Jiang Fengyi of what had just happened. How could she possibly focus on eating? One look at Xu Que brought that scene right back.
“You…”
Her cheeks turned as red as a cooked shrimp.
“You can’t…” Her voice was muffled, as if coated in honey. “You can’t do that again… stealing… stealing a kiss without permission.”
Xu Que was busy putting food into Jiang Fengyi’s bowl. Hearing this, her hand paused.
Then she asked tentatively, “Then in the future, should I ask for your opinion before I kiss you?”
She scooted her chair even closer to Jiang Fengyi: “For example, right now…”
Her gaze fixed on Jiang Fengyi’s rosy lips.
“If you don’t start using your chopsticks, I’m going to kiss your mouth.”
