- Chapter 32 - Huo Zhenhua Again
“What are you doing?”
Su Meng’s expression shifted dramatically. With a twist of her wrist, she broke free from the man’s grasp, her anger flaring as she raised her hand to strike.
But then she heard the little girl shout, “Don’t!”
Even without anyone else’s warning, Su Meng could sense the danger now.
A figure charged toward her like a swift leopard, radiating an aura that seemed ready to cut down gods and buddhas alike.
If the man hadn’t pulled her aside, she would have been sent flying once again.
Why was it him again?
The young man sprinting over was the same one who had nearly knocked her down earlier.
As he dashed past Su Meng, his icy gaze swept over her like an X-ray, sharp and penetrating.
“Stop! Please refrain from causing a disturbance in the carriage. Show me your identification,” the train attendant demanded, blocking the passage between carriages and eyeing the sweat-drenched young man warily.
Panting heavily, the young man narrowed his peach-blossom eyes and flashed a roguish grin. “Identification, huh? Let me catch my breath first.”
With that, he lifted his leg and stepped onto the nearby seat, completely disregarding the fact that someone was sitting there.
“Ouch! You’re crushing me! Are you blind, you little brat? Get down!” The middle-aged woman scowled, slapping his leg forcefully and shouting loudly.
The young man’s eyes bulged, and he swung his fist straight toward her nose. “Get lost!”
The woman shrank back, her expression stiffening, and fell silent, quietly moving aside.
Others in the surrounding seats quickly dispersed, afraid of getting involved.
This guy was clearly nothing but trouble!
The young man sneered, his lean hands gripping the window ledge as he smoothly slid his upper body out the window. Planting his feet on the dining table, he prepared to push off.
Passengers nearby stood up to watch, pointing and murmuring among themselves.
The train attendant immediately contacted the train conductor and the railway police.
Suddenly, Su Meng noticed a long, dark rod swaying outside the window.
The next moment, she heard the young man cry out in pain… once, then again.
What kind of drama were they playing out here?
The incident at the dock had taught her a harsh lesson: watching trouble could lead to serious consequences.
Su Meng slowly retreated toward the carriage connection.
“They’re here! They’ve caught up!”
Someone shouted, and the entire carriage rose to their feet, curiously watching three men rush in.
They were all dressed identically: white shirts tucked into black trousers, with black metal belt buckles gleaming at their waists.
Their postures were upright, their strides firm and swift as the wind.
Their target was the young man dangling outside the window.
“Go on, run! Why did you stop?” one of them taunted, flanking the young man from the left while another closed in from the right.
A third man showed his credentials to the train attendant. “These are my papers. Thank you for your cooperation, comrades.”
His voice was remarkably distinctive, deep and resonant, like a subwoofer, with a natural echo.
Just as memorable as she recalled.
Lost in thought, Su Meng met his pitch-black eyes and felt the sharpness of his gaze, immediately pulling back.
Yet, a younger version of his voice abruptly surfaced in her mind “What a coincidence! Why is she here too?”
Su Meng was certain Huo Zhenhua hadn’t spoken those words aloud, but they had inexplicably popped into her head.
Why?
Had the series of shocks driven her to the brink of madness, causing hallucinations?
Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed through the carriage.
Followed by the young man’s arrogant voice, “I’m not a thief! I’m not a thief! How many times do I have to tell you? Why won’t you listen?”
“Even if you’re public officials, you can’t arrest someone without evidence. I’ll sue you!”
When Su Meng curiously looked over, she met the young man’s peach blossom eyes.
He raised an eyebrow at her… and winked.
Her heart skipped a beat, her scalp tingled, and a chill ran up from the soles of her feet.
She didn’t consider herself some stunning beauty who would repeatedly catch his attention.
He must be up to something.
Su Meng frowned and shifted her stance, her shoulder bag swaying slightly with the movement.
Just then, Su Meng sensed that the weight inside felt wrong.
Taking advantage of everyone’s attention being on the young man, she moved the contents of her bag onto the stone table in her space.
Among them, a palm-sized miniature camera stood out the most.
Su Meng stared at the miniature camera, lost in thought.
This kind of imported equipment had limited production and was typically used only for high-end espionage activities in military or commercial sectors.
Clearly, the young man must be an enemy spy.
He had been exposed and was being targeted by Huo Zhenhua and others.
In a desperate move, he had quietly slipped the miniature camera into her bag to shift suspicion and evade responsibility.
Realizing this, Su Meng sneered and returned her own belongings to her bag.
Naturally, that miniature camera would have to be returned to its owner.
She wasn’t going to take the fall for someone else.
She pushed through the crowd and moved closer again.
Just then, she heard the young man calmly defend himself: “Comrade, you’ve searched me and investigated me. Shouldn’t you let me go back to rest now?”
Huo Zhenhua completely ignored him. “Take him away!”
“This is unjust! I haven’t broken any laws. Why are you taking me away for no reason? I won’t accept this!”
The young man protested loudly, secretly glancing at Su Meng before letting his gaze drift elsewhere.
Su Meng pretended not to notice his look, watching the scene with the same nervous curiosity as everyone else.
But secretly, she waited for an opportunity to act.
Additionally, she wanted to test whether she could hear Huo Zhenhua’s faint voice again.
She wanted to figure out what was really going on.
But after waiting for a long time, she didn’t hear Huo Zhenhua’s faint voice.
She felt disappointed.
Hmph! So much for saying she was here too.
She didn’t want to run into him either, okay?
Every time she encountered him, something bad happened.
Suddenly, she sensed a familiar sharp gaze. When she snapped back to attention, she saw Huo Zhenhua watching her thoughtfully.
She pouted and looked away.
But what she didn’t know was that Huo Zhenhua’s mind was in turmoil once again.
He had actually heard Su Meng complaining that she didn’t want to run into him and that nothing good ever happened when she did.
Tch! How ridiculous!
If he hadn’t heard her thoughts, he wouldn’t have noticed this.
Come to think of it, during their few encounters, he had always been on missions.
Could it really be such a coincidence?
Could she… be involved?
But remembering their intimate first meeting, he genuinely hoped Su Meng wasn’t his enemy.
Huo Zhenhua glanced at Su Meng, then walked over with two colleagues escorting the young man.
Su Meng stepped back with the crowd to make way.
She deliberately slowed her pace.
As the young man passed by, she pretended to be pushed, lurching forward and grabbing his clothes.
Seizing the opportunity, she “smuggled” the miniature camera back to him.
The young man was about to tease her when he met Huo Zhenhua’s stern gaze.
“Stand properly!”
Huo Zhenhua released Su Meng’s collar and spoke calmly.
“Mhm!”
Just moments ago, when she had leaned forward and nearly stumbled, she had felt someone grabbing her by the collar, preventing the tragedy of a fall.
So, it was him who had intervened.
His gaze remained as sharp as ever, making one feel as if stripped bare and utterly exposed.
How terrifying!
Huo Zhenhua withdrew his hand and gave her a deep, penetrating look.
Was she afraid of him?
He curled his lips into a faint smile and strode away.
Su Meng let out a soft sigh of relief.
Finally, she had returned that hot potato!
Suddenly, she recalled how the young man had glanced at her before turning his gaze elsewhere.
Her heart, which had just settled, leaped into her throat again. Her hands tightened around the straps of her backpack, and she stood frozen in place.
Was he secretly signaling his accomplice that the micro-camera was on her?
Did this mean she had just escaped one trap only to fall into another?
No! She refused to be entangled by enemy spies. She had to save herself, clear her name.
Immediately, right now!
As Huo Zhenhua and his group moved further away, the train attendant urged everyone to return to their seats and maintain quiet.
“Comrade, please return to your seat. The train will be arriving at the station soon.”
Su Meng nodded obediently. “Alright!”
But just as she took a step, the tip of her foot accidentally bumped against the leg of a nearby seat.
“Ah!”
She let out a startled cry, skillfully dodging the attendant’s outstretched hand, only to fall face-first onto the floor.
Instantly, the contents of her shoulder bag scattered all over the ground.
