- Chapter 31 - Damn... Fate!
Su Meng: “Alright.”
Mo Xiaoli clasped her hands together gratefully. “Su Meng, seeing you, I know I’m saved. Heh! I ran all the way from the ship just to find you.”
Su Meng: “…Thank you.”
That night, Su Meng, Mo Xiaoli, and Su Xiaoman stayed at a guesthouse near the police station.
At the break of dawn the next day, their room door was knocked.
“Su Meng, my cousin is here to pick me up.” Mo Xiaoli stood smiling outside the door, already changed into clean clothes. She handed over a roll of banknotes. “Here, returning this to you. My cousin bought me new clothes. Thank you!”
Su Meng pushed the extra money back. “It’s too much! Well… see you again someday!”
Just as she finished speaking, a man in military uniform appeared from around the corner of the staircase.
“This is my cousin, Nie Ronghua. He serves in the Southeast Military Region.” Mo Xiaoli leaned in with a grin. “Su Meng, what do you think of my cousin?”
Su Meng: “…”
Wasn’t he the soldier in the white undershirt on the ship? His name was… Nie Ronghua? Could he be her arranged marriage partner from childhood? She hadn’t seen him after disembarking yesterday, yet here they were, crossing paths again. Damn… fate!
Nie Ronghua spotted Su Meng, his expression stiff and unnatural. His fingers curled slightly at his sides, and his thin lips parted: “I’m sorry!”
Su Meng was baffled. Before she could react, he added: “Thank you!”
Su Meng grew even more confused. But Nie Ronghua had already averted his gaze. He said to Mo Xiaoli, “I’ve arranged for someone to take you back. They’re waiting downstairs.”
Mo Xiaoli immediately retracted her gossipy gaze, but her peripheral vision caught sight of blood dripping from the back of Nie Ronghua’s hand. She exclaimed, “You’re bleeding!” Grabbing his sleeve, she hurriedly pulled him away. “Su Meng, see you another day!”
Nie Ronghua had actually slipped out of the hospital. His comrades, waiting downstairs, were set to depart on a mission. Pressed for time, he couldn’t offer much explanation. He turned away firmly, yet cast an apologetic glance backward. But Su Meng had already returned to her room.
He asked helplessly, “You know Su Meng?”
Mo Xiaoli lifted her chin. “Of course! Who doesn’t know the daughter of the Su family, the richest man around?”
As Su Meng closed the door, she overheard their conversation and found it inexplicably amusing. Her meeting and acquaintance with Mo Xiaoli, a stranger, had begun dramatically due to Zhong Wanrou and Wang Guangming’s affair. Yet, she and Nie Ronghua, bound by a childhood engagement, had met without recognizing each other. Heh! Such was fate!
After parting ways with Su Xiaoman and her child, Su Meng boarded the southbound train. Staring blankly at the receding platform, the familiar clattering sound finally settled her heart. At last, she could head south with peace of mind, a sense of security the passenger ship couldn’t provide.
Time flew, and in the blink of an eye, the train pulled into another station. The passenger beside her disembarked. Su Meng stood up to stretch her limbs, curiously observing the diverse passengers coming and going. Suddenly, she spotted a familiar figure passing through the connecting area between carriages. Her eyes widened in disbelief, fixed intently on the retreating back. Was it him? Could it really be him? Su Meng grabbed her satchel and rushed after him. As the train whistle blew, the carriage began to glide forward slowly.
Su Meng carefully navigated through the crowded aisle, avoiding pedestrians and food carts as she chased after a figure about ten meters ahead.
Suddenly, the train accelerated, causing everyone to stagger and scramble to regain their balance.
In that brief moment, Shen Wuyang’s figure vanished completely.
Fuming with anger, her heart racing, she furrowed her brows and rushed to the next carriage, meticulously checking each seat one by one.
But there was no trace of him.
Further ahead lay the sleeper carriage.
At the connecting area to the sleeper carriage stood a train attendant holding a ticket punch, positioned in front of the end door.
“Comrade, may I pass through, or could I purchase a sleeper ticket?” Su Meng asked bluntly, unsure whether Shen Wuyang had entered the sleeper carriage and unfamiliar with the domestic railway regulations.
The attendant replied sternly, “Please present your identification and letter of introduction.”
Su Meng handed over her street committee certificate as requested.
“Sorry, comrade. You do not meet the requirements to enter.”
Su Meng: “…”
She turned away with a look of disappointment, but inwardly, she was delighted.
Shen Wuyang definitely couldn’t have entered the sleeper carriage either, he must be hiding somewhere in this carriage.
Once again, Su Meng began a thorough, carpet-like search.
What she couldn’t understand was how Shen Wuyang, a murder suspect also accused of embezzling public property, bribery, and corruption, could move around so freely.
Who had helped him obtain his letter of introduction?
Who was funding his expenses?
Who was backing him?
What was his true identity?
A flurry of questions raced through Su Meng’s mind, her delicate eyebrows nearly twisting into knots.
“Little girl, why aren’t you watching where you’re going? You stepped on someone’s hand!”
“Hey! I’m talking to you. How can you be so rude? Aren’t you going to apologize for stepping on someone?”
Su Meng, unwilling to give up, continued her search, completely unaware that the person was referring to her. After all, everyone in this carriage was sitting properly in their seats, there was no one in the aisle.
Claiming to have been stepped on was nothing but a joke!
“Hey! What’s wrong with you? Are you deaf?”
A kind bystander nearby reminded her, “Little girl, someone behind is calling you.”
“What’s the matter?”
Su Meng turned around in confusion, instinctively stepping aside to avoid a young man emerging from the sleeper carriage, his hands tucked in his pockets and an unlit cigarette dangling from his lips.
She had moved aside, but the young man swaggered forward confidently.
In the narrow aisle, a collision was inevitable.
Su Meng was nearly knocked onto another passenger.
“Hey! You-”
She began to voice her complaint but stopped abruptly as her eyes met a pair of dangerous ones.
Then, she recalled the hard object she had felt against his waist during the collision, and her heart sank.
What kind of world was this?
Why did danger seem to lurk everywhere?
Forget it, it was just a bump, after all.
“Little girl, you stepped on my daughter’s hand. You need to pay compensation!”
No sooner had she steadied herself than someone grabbed her by the collar from behind, speaking harshly.
Su Meng couldn’t help but laugh in disbelief. What was going on?
Was she cursed with bad luck?
If she had stepped on someone, an apology or compensation was only right.
But Su Meng hated being threatened, especially by someone grabbing her collar. “Are you sure you want compensation? How about we go find the train attendant and let them decide?”
Just then, she noticed a little girl crawling out from under a seat, cradling her hand and staring at Su Meng with tear-filled eyes.
“Let’s reason it out then. I’m not afraid of justice.” The man spoke with unyielding confidence, locking eyes with Su Meng.
Su Meng observed him calmly. “Your child is over 1.2 meters tall and requires a ticket. Yet you evaded the fare by hiding her under the seat, that’s your first offense. Second, you’re bullying the weak and intimidating a woman. Third, you’re harassing a female comrade, grabbing my clothes, what were you trying to do? Any one of these is enough to land you in trouble.”
Before Su Meng could finish, the man retreated several steps, a flicker of admiration in his eyes, though his tone remained cold. “Fine. You. Win.”
Su Meng smiled faintly and beckoned to the little girl. “Come here, let me take a look.”
The girl hid timidly behind her father, cautiously extending her injured hand.
Su Meng handed over two yuan. “I’m sorry! It was my mistake, and I apologize.”
The man grinned as he took the money, then suddenly yanked Su Meng toward him…
