- Chapter 15 - Woof! Do Not! Do Not Reject Me!
Wen Leling’s heart pounded wildly. He pulled his shoulder back, gritting his teeth against the aching soreness as he squinted his eyes open. “What are you doing?”
“What mental guidance? You are not a Sentinel. I cannot provide guidance to you.”
His voice grew softer. Wen Leling turned his face away, not daring to look directly into Ah Long’s eyes.
The man’s gaze was no longer weak or timid as it had been in the past; it had become sharp and cold. It fell upon Wen Leling like a predator defending its prey. A desire for possession filled his bloodshot eyes, which suddenly narrowed, his face cold and devoid of warmth.
Wen Leling felt the air around them begin to freeze.
Shadows loomed over him. He was pressed tightly into the narrow, suffocating space between the wall and the man’s chest, like being trapped in a bottomless cage. Ah Long’s large hand gripped his chin, forcing him to lift his head and face the terrifying, chilling pressure.
Wen Leling’s eyes shook with shock. He tried to struggle, but Ah Long unexpectedly grabbed his neck. The force applied was ruthless, as if the man would not stop until he crushed his throat.
Wen Leling’s delicate skin was instantly overwhelmed, red marks surfacing in stark contrast to his small face, which had turned a sickly white from fear. It looked like a touch of rouge melting into the snow. His fan like eyelashes trembled incessantly.
“Do not, Lele. Do not reject me.”
Ah Long’s voice was hoarse, filled with a hair-raising obsession. Even though they were already toe to toe, he was still unsatisfied. His footsteps felt unsteady as he leaned closer, blocking Wen Leling in further. He grabbed Wen Leling’s slender waist with both hands, lifting him up easily before setting him down again.
Wen Leling stepped onto the man’s shoes, feeling awkward and at a loss.
“Why? Why are you chasing me away? Just because I broke a doll!?”
His shoulders were being shaken with high frequency and force. Wen Leling felt a bit dizzy, but hearing Ah Long question him so self-righteously, his anger flared.
What did he mean by “just a doll”?
The man did not know, and could never know, how important that doll was to him! He was going to be ruined! Furthermore, moving someone else’s things without permission was extremely impolite.
Truly detestable!
How did Ah Long dare to be so self-righteous, acting as if he had done nothing wrong from beginning to end, and that it was all Wen Leling’s fault for being petty?
Wen Leling felt frustrated and wanted to escape, but what was this about Ah Long asking for mental guidance?
The fact that he had awakened as a Guide was only known to those he had met in the White Tower. Additionally, Sentinels and Guides could recognize each other upon meeting. But was Ah Long not an ordinary human?
Without mental power, how could he be a Sentinel? Was it an accident? Had Ah Long actually awakened as a Sentinel silently and unnoticed some time ago?
The more Wen Leling tried to reason it out, the more confused he became. Old problems were not yet solved, and new ones were popping up. If that were the case, was the python from earlier Ah Long’s spirit animal?
Wen Leling fell into deep thought. He allowed Ah Long to mutter into his ear, which turned burning red, while he looked at the eager python nearby.
“Is, is that your spirit animal?” Wen Leling struggled to remain calm. His voice was light and level as he inconspicuously pulled back, looking for a gap to escape.
Suddenly, he thought that if Ah Long really had awakened as a Sentinel, he might actually have the upper hand in a direct confrontation. He took a quiet breath, and thin threads of his affinity-based Guide mental power tentatively gathered and reached out.
Wen Leling wanted to soothe the other’s mania, so he took the initiative to investigate.
Ah Long’s vision was blurry. He felt an unprecedented surge of comfort and answered in a daze, “Yes, it is.”
As if fearing Wen Leling would not believe him, he urgently summoned the python to prove himself.
There was hope.
He estimated that Ah Long was at most an A-rank, and for a B-rank Guide to control an A-rank Sentinel was practically effortless. Wen Leling calmed his mind and proceeded cautiously, waiting for Ah Long to sink deeper into the trance so he could find a chance to flee.
“Ah Long, calm down. Relax. You need help right now.”
“Hmm, help me? You are willing to help me now?” Ah Long grinned, his smile twisted and grotesque. His eyes grew more frantic and eerie. “Yes, help me. Only you can help me.”
“If you do not help me, I will die.” He suddenly grabbed Wen Leling’s wrist. His movements were as fast as a startled bird, and his strength was immense, like a large iron pincer, causing Wen Leling sharp pain.
Then, his other hand pushed its luck, reaching up to rub and squeeze Wen Leling’s arm and shoulder, and he even ungratefully hooked his finger into Wen Leling’s collar to tease him.
At the same time, Wen Leling finally felt a mental fluctuation that did not belong to him. It was an indescribable sensation that rushed toward him strangely, causing his heart to sink and waves of panic to rise.
“Ah Long.”
Wen Leling called out softly. His intuition told him that things were likely not as simple as he had imagined. He concentrated his thoughts.
“Lele, Lele. You are mine.”
The absolute physical disadvantage caused Wen Leling’s fear of the unknown situation to magnify infinitely. He keenly sensed the mental fluctuations from the out of control Sentinel and finally could not wait any longer. He tried to push Ah Long away.
“Ah Long, let go of me first. I cannot help you if you are like this.”
But before he could convince Ah Long, the scene before him made his heart leap into his throat, and his mind went blank.
The thick, giant python had somehow quietly moved behind Ah Long. Its eyes were a pure, blood red, looking even more terrifying. Cold and greedy, it locked its gaze onto Wen Leling.
“Hiss!”
The python stretched its body to five or six meters, letting out a sky-shaking hiss before swooping down and coiling around him, taking Wen Leling’s arm into its mouth.
A bang sounded.
It was as if a bolt of thunder powerful enough to shatter the world had exploded right above his head. Wen Leling was shaken to his core.
The snake! The snake swallowed his arm! He could feel the python tightening its body, its teeth scraping against his skin, causing pain and numbness.
His arm!
“Get away!” Panic made Wen Leling lose his cool. He used all his strength. He could not hit the python, but with Ah Long right in front of him, he suddenly raised his hand and delivered a slap.
A short, crisp crack sounded.
Ah Long’s face was whipped to the side, then he slowly turned back.
After a brief moment of stillness, Wen Leling watched in terror as madness completely erupted in Ah Long’s eyes: “You dare hit me!?”
He let out a roar like an enraged beast, completely devoid of reason. With one hand, he ruthlessly covered Wen Leling’s mouth and nose, cutting off his breath. With the other, he gripped his waist and dragged him up, his feet leaving the ground, as he was brutally pulled toward a dark, deserted alley.
Ah Long was actually unaffected by mental power!?
After recklessly delivering that slap, Wen Leling had increased the dosage of his mental power release in an attempt to control Ah Long, but Ah Long showed no reaction. His struggling felt utterly futile against the massive strength difference.
Feeling helpless, Wen Leling frowned.
The lack of oxygen caused his vision to turn black. The python did not let him go either; slowly and greedily, it continued to devour his flesh.
Was he going to die? Swallowed whole by a snake, dying in such a confusing way.
“Woof!”
Just as his consciousness was about to be submerged, Wen Leling heard a fierce dog bark.
Dazed, he lifted his eyelids. He saw a golden figure swiftly bolt into the alley, moving so fast it left an afterimage.
It was a large Golden Retriever. It leaped into the air without hesitation and bit down on the python coiled around him at just the right spot.
The mental power of an S-rank Sentinel spread out, which was an absolute suppression for the python. It did not even have a chance to cry out before it was defeated and vanished.
Wen Leling was free, but looking at the slimy bodily fluids… Ugh.
He closed his eyes peacefully, unable to bear the sight.
Then, a tall, sturdy figure rushed over like a gust of wind. In the time it took for Wen Leling to open his eyes, Ah Long had already been brought to justice on the ground.
He was caught steadily by the man and placed on the Golden Retriever’s back to be taken to the alley entrance.
Happy to serve the little Guide, the Golden Retriever wagged its tail with high, broad strokes. But having just escaped suffocation, Wen Leling could only cough violently and breathe in large gulps of fresh air. It was only when the Golden Retriever had been throwing charming glances for a long time without receiving a pat that he reacted. He looked back at it, smiling as he rubbed its head.
The Golden Retriever rubbed back comfortably.
“Good dog.”
On the other side, Ah Long played dead on the ground for a while. Knowing he was no match for an S-rank Sentinel, he used a dirty trick and fled in a panic.
Seeing Ah Long run away, the Golden Retriever bolted back into the alley with Wen Leling. Before he could wonder why, Wen Leling saw the Sentinel kneeling on his left knee, struggling to try and stand up.
“Are you okay?” Seeing this, Wen Leling quickly climbed down from the Golden Retriever and ran over to ask.
“I am fine.”
Smack. Wen Leling’s hand, which he had reached out to check the wound, was slapped away. He froze, swallowing his words of concern just in time.
“Are you a Guide? Did your supervisor not tell you that it is not safe outside lately and that you should not go out alone?”
“Where do you live? Tell Maomao so he can take you back.”
Wen Leling remembered Fu Tingchuan saying something before leaving, but he had not taken it seriously. But what exactly happened? He wanted to ask, but before the words could leave his mouth, the Sentinel swayed and fell straight forward.
What? Eh? What is the situation?
Wen Leling was bewildered. The Sentinel’s mental landscape was normal, and the python was not poisonous; otherwise, he would not be standing here unharmed. So how could the Sentinel just faint like that?
Without time to think further, he hurriedly contacted Xia Congmian, briefly explained the current situation, and waited anxiously for backup.
