- Chapter 14 - Contamination : You Dare Kick Me Out? You Actually Dare Kick Me Out!?
During the treatment, the doctor had given Wen Leling a nutrient IV, so despite being taken by Fu Tingchuan to tour the team dormitory and then moving in a hurry until late at night, he still did not feel hungry, only tired.
Very tired.
Finally finished with the logistics, he lay on the bed in his bedroom wanting to sleep soundly, only to vaguely remember that his leave of absence expired today.
Thus, he hurriedly logged onto the streaming platform to update his announcement and contacted his manager to extend his leave. He arranged to meet the next day to talk, though he did not specify the topic beforehand.
Wen Leling wanted to discuss the absurdity regarding Ah Long and his four Top Donators. He had no desire to play out a drama of catching someone in an affair, even if he were to discover in the end that he was also a victim.
He wanted to distance himself from those four Top Donators.
As for Ah Long, he was not fit to be an assistant.
Early the next morning, Wen Leling stepped out of his room just as Fu Tingchuan was about to leave. He was not curious; squinting his eyes half-shut, he gave the man a brief look and lowered his head to head down the stairs.
A few steps down, he noticed he had not heard the door open. He looked up again and found Fu Tingchuan staring at him, having not moved an inch.
He asked, “What are you looking at?” His voice was impatient yet carried a soft, lazy quality.
Fu Tingchuan’s gaze was deep. He said, “I just received a temporary mission. The danger level is below Class C, very simple. Do you want to come along?”
“No.”
Wen Leling had neither the time nor the interest. He reached the bottom floor and, drowsily squinting one eye, let out a slow, lazy yawn. A few teardrops squeezed from the corners of his eyes, sparkling brilliantly in the morning light as they rolled slowly down the contours of his pale pink cheeks.
Fu Tingchuan watched him, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He averted his gaze and said, “Then I am leaving. Food is on the table; remember to heat it up before eating.”
“It has not been very safe outside lately. Do not go running around for no reason. Tell me when you leave the dormitory, and contact me anytime if something happens.”
With that, he hurriedly opened the door and left, as if a wild beast were hot on his heels and a second’s hesitation would land him in its jaws.
Wen Leling did not take it to heart. While eating, he perfunctorily replied to three of the Top Donators. Min Chi was still out of contact, likely because his treatment had not yet finished.
After the meal, he booked a car to the company.
“You cannot take any more leave today.”
Wen Leling pushed open the office door. Before he saw Han Wangfei, he heard his voice.
“I am not taking leave.”
He walked in and sat across from Han Wangfei, smiling and trying his best to appear relaxed. However, his hands betrayed him, alternately fidgeting on the table or reaching down to pick at the hem of his clothes, completely exposing his inner anxiety.
Han Wangfei saw through him almost instantly. He knew Wen Leling was harboring something big; otherwise, he would not have requested a meeting. Sweating slightly, he asked, “What is it? Just say it.”
“I…”
“Resigning is not an option.”
The conversation was cut short.
One moment, Han Wangfei was listening with a worried, serious expression; the next, he seemed to snap awake from a dream and sharply interrupted.
Wen Leling waved his hands in denial, giving him reassurance. “No, Brother Han, you misunderstood. I do not want to resign. I want to talk to you about my four Top Donators.”
“Top Donators?”
Han Wangfei was slightly stunned, his mind settling a bit. Since Wen Leling started the job, he had never had to worry about the communications with the Top Donators; Leling was easy to talk to and got everything done perfectly. What could be so major? It seemed he was being overly suspicious.
Feeling more at ease, he took a slow sip of tea. “What about them?”
Upon hearing this, Wen Leling did not immediately state his goal, knowing this would be a shock rather than a pleasant surprise for Han Wangfei. He considerately waited for Han Wangfei to swallow the tea before speaking. He did not beat around the bush and went straight to the point. “I do not want to stay in contact with the four Top Donators anymore.”
His gaze was resolute, brooking no argument.
Han Wangfei: ?
“Wh, what did you say?” Han Wangfei cleaned his ear, his brows arching and his eyes full of disbelief.
The blood rushed to his face visibly, turning it a congested red before losing color again. Wen Leling stood up before the volcano could erupt, taking the initiative.
“Brother Han, you do not need to persuade me. I know this is a huge loss for both me and the company, but I absolutely will not change my mind.”
“As for the reason, please do not ask, Brother Han. It is really not convenient for me to say. To compensate the company, I checked my second, third, and fourth ranked supporters. Their strength is not bad either. After I cut ties with the Top Donators, I will talk more with those three and try to get them to…”
Throw more money.
This was not a glorious subject, so Wen Leling was embarrassed to say it out loud.
The chair scraped against the floor, drowning out the sound of Han Wangfei tapping the table. He stood up, eyes wide and fuming with rage. Fortunately, Wen Leling’s compensation strategy was like a bucket of cold water poured over his head in time, allowing him to calm down temporarily and weigh the pros and cons.
Analyzing the four Top Donators’ devotion to Wen Leling from a bystander’s perspective, it was absolutely an obsession. If they did not see Wen Leling for a day, they would be both psychologically and physiologically uncomfortable.
Although he did not know why Wen Leling wanted to distance himself or what had happened between them, things had already reached this point; those four probably could not handle a cliff-style separation.
Therefore, there was a very high possibility that they would throw massive amounts of money in a short time to keep Wen Leling. Even if Wen Leling ignored them or even laughed and talked with others, they would likely swallow their pride day after day until time finally diluted their obsession and forced them to accept the fact that Wen Leling no longer wanted them.
In the meantime, if Wen Leling intensely courted the three next in line, could they not make two fortunes at once?
As Han Wangfei thought this, his excitement became visible. For a moment, he was even gesticulating wildly and speaking incoherently.
Wen Leling did not know what he was thinking, but he guessed the matter was settled. He smiled along and then, after gaining approval, told him there was a second matter.
?
As if hit by a club, Han Wangfei’s smile vanished instantly.
There was more?
Learning from the previous lesson, he did not dare let his guard down. He straightened his face and braced himself seriously, doing some mental preparation in advance.
No matter what Wen Leling talked about now, no matter how big or bad, it could not be worse than kicking four Top Donators to the curb at once.
He would listen, to see if there were still bombs left.
“I want to change my assistant.”
“There is no ‘why.’ I just want to change him.”
Before Han Wangfei could probe for a reason, Wen Leling blocked the path to further questioning, his lips pursed slightly.
He did not think Han Wangfei would refuse; after all, this was the man who was terrified he would resign.
As expected, Han Wangfei agreed without a second thought. He let out a sigh of relief and said cheerfully as if it were nothing, “Fine! If you want to change, we will change!”
“Lele…”
Hmm? Who was calling him?
The harmonious atmosphere was pierced by a suppressed, low call. The door creaked open, and Wen Leling looked toward the sound.
It was Ah Long.
He stood at the door with moist eyes. Their gazes collided in the air. Wen Leling felt as if they were having an invisible but intense confrontation with their eyes, which finally ended with his own victory.
Ah Long did not say a word. He wiped away a tear and ran off. Wen Leling was left dazed again and again.
What was all this? Would Han Wangfei not pay him for his normal work over the past few days? Did he think he had worked hard for nothing and got angry?
Wen Leling left the company with these questions. He did not confirm with Han Wangfei but transferred a sum of money to Ah Long to settle things between them. Then, out of habit, he walked into the dessert shop next door.
“Two boxes of macarons, thank you.”
Coming out of the dessert shop, Wen Leling prepared to book a return car. To his surprise, while everything had been fine when he arrived, he could not go back now.
“……”
His current location had been marked by the White Tower as a “Severe Contamination Zone,” and all traffic was prohibited. However, he looked left and right, and the surroundings were clear with blue skies and silent air. There was not a single sign of a contaminated entity.
But the monitors probably would not make a mistake. To be safe, he definitely could not stay outside; he had to return to the company first.
Wen Leling ran toward the company with large strides. Suddenly, a massive dark shadow flashed before his eyes. He was startled, and his hand slipped, dropping a box of macarons.
He had no time to pick it up. He quickly rushed into the company and, panting, turned back to see what that thing was. He saw a giant python racing like the wind, charging directly at him with a clear target.
Whose Sentinel spiritual animal was that? No, this was not one! Something was wrong!
Wen Leling could not feel any Sentinel’s spiritual power. Watching the python approach with its bloody mouth wide open, he braced himself and summoned over a hundred rabbits to act as a shield. Meanwhile, he took the chance to contact Xia Congmian for help.
But just as the call connected, a familiar figure rushed out from the side, snatched his phone, and decisively hung up the call.
“Ah Long? Uh…”
Wen Leling frowned in surprise as Ah Long pushed him hard against the wall without a word. He closed his eyes and whimpered in pain, his brow furrowing deeper.
“Lele… Lele… Lele! You dare kick me out? You actually dare kick me out!?”
“I heard you awakened as a Guide?”
“Lele, give me a cleansing once, okay? I beg you! I feel so miserable…”
