- Chapter 12 - Differences: Sorry, He Has No Energy to Manage Stray Dogs
Like falling into the deep sea, descending continuously, Wen Leling struggled out of a deep sleep. He felt completely weak, his mind was groggy, and his body felt as if a heavy stone were pressing down on him.
Propping himself up with one hand, he blinked his dry eyes. His long, thick lashes trembled, casting shadows like the translucent wings of a butterfly as he adjusted to the indoor light.
He was so tired.
“Awake?” A familiar male voice sounded beside him. Wen Leling turned his head and realized that his bedside companion had changed at some point.
“Song He?” He was surprised, his voice a mix of post-sleep hoarseness and softness. “Why are you here? How long have I been asleep? Where is Fu Tingchuan?”
Song He was not wearing a uniform. Instead, he wore a set of casual sportswear that masked his usual cold aura, making him appear a bit more approachable. A faint smile lingered in his eyes. “Not long, only seven hours.”
“Fu Tingchuan left for an emergency mission.”
Wen Leling felt a hint of sarcasm in that tone.
He gave a muffled “Oh” and showed his displeasure. His heart, which had been as calm as a lake, was suddenly hit by waves of confusion. Like a lost little rabbit, his ears stood straight, and his half-exposed tail fur tightened as he hid back. With misty eyes, he asked, “What should I do now? Can I leave? Or should I stay here for further observation?”
Song He took in his dazed appearance, which made his heart soften. His gaze grew even gentler as he said, “Do you feel any discomfort? If not, we can go handle your onboarding procedures.”
Onboarding? He had almost forgotten about that.
Wen Leling yawned, lifted his injured hand, and moved it. There was no pain, just a slight numbness. He rubbed his sleepy eyes with that same hand, and after confirming he was healed, he kicked off the covers and got out of bed. “I am fine. Let us go.”
Song He considerately stepped forward to assist him.
“Thank you.” Wen Leling smiled, but the moment his skin touched Song He’s, he sensed a hint of danger. His smile stiffened.
“Where is White Shark?” he questioned Song He. Normally, that spirit animal would have popped up near him by now. Why had he not seen it all day?
“He.” Song He took a long breath and stopped mid-sentence. He glanced upward as if thinking, but awkwardly touched his ear, making it look like he was hiding something.
It was clear Song He did not want to talk about it, so Wen Leling did not press further. The two tacitly skipped the topic and headed to the onboarding office together.
The process was very smooth; Wen Leling only needed to sign a few documents. Once finished, Song He insisted on accompanying him out of the White Tower.
On the way, Song He suddenly stopped.
Wen Leling turned back, confused. “What is wrong?”
Song He remained silent for a long time. After several attempts to speak, he finally managed to squeeze out, “Guide Wen.”
“Yes?”
“You.”
“What?”
“Could you.”
“I cannot.” Wen Leling had reached his limit with this “squeezing toothpaste” style of speaking. He spoke coldly, unable to endure it any longer.
He turned to leave. Seeing this, Song He panicked, his brain racing to catch up with his mouth. “Could you test your compatibility with me!?”
Test compatibility?
Inside the White Tower, the mental guidance process was like a regular human visiting a hospital. Guides were divided into outpatient doctors and inpatient doctors.
Outpatient doctors had to keep their guidance application channels open long-term. Sentinels would pay to select Guides with matching compatibility for invitations. Both parties worked together to complete the guidance, but Guides did not have to accept every order; they could refuse, provided they did not exceed five orders a month.
Inpatient doctors, like Wen Leling, were team-based Guides. They had to perform regular guidance for Sentinels within their team and keep records. They had the right to choose whether to take outpatient cases for other compatible Sentinels.
Was he hiding things from him while also trying to squeeze extra work out of him? Wen Leling was puzzled and looked at Song He with a gaze that seemed to ask, “Do you really think everything in the world is yours for the taking?”
But just as a tactful refusal reached his lips, a deep, thick male voice interrupted him from behind.
“Wen Leling, come here.”
Wen Leling turned around and saw Fu Tingchuan standing nearby. Fresh from a mission, he had not yet changed his clothes. He was surrounded by invisible, chaotic polluted entities that were attacking him. A small, silver-white wolf followed obediently behind him; its eyes, clouded with filth, stared intently at Wen Leling’s side, its tail lowered.
“You.” Seeing Fu Tingchuan approach, Wen Leling opened his lips to speak, but before he could say a word, Fu Tingchuan reached out and draped an arm over his shoulder. He pulled him gently toward his side, protectively shielding him.
Wen Leling’s shoulder stiffened.
Under Fu Tingchuan’s shadow, his figure appeared even thinner. His lack of resistance added to Fu Tingchuan’s air of ownership, making the man’s oppressive gaze even more chilling.
Song He refused to back down, meeting the look with a frown.
Wen Leling smelled gunpowder in the air, seemingly emanating from right above his head. Feeling a sense of dread, he swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He looked up at Fu Tingchuan and then at Song He. Their eyes were like fighters in an octagon, locked in a stalemate.
He hesitated over whether to intervene, fearing he might be accidentally injured if a fight broke out.
However, in the next second, Fu Tingchuan not only resolved the dilemma but also stated his position: “Sorry, he is already struggling to handle us. I am afraid he has no energy to manage stray dogs outside. Mr. Song should stop thinking about it.”
Wen Leling was shocked. What did Fu Tingchuan just say? He called Song He a stray dog?
Seeing Song He’s face instantly cloud over, Wen Leling wanted to cover Fu Tingchuan’s arrogant mouth, stuff him into a trash bag, and drag him away!
The first impression Song He gave was usually that of someone with a “knife hidden in a smile,” always wearing a gentle expression. But without needing careful observation, one could see that his smile was not pure. Hidden within that smile was a ferocity that had nothing to do with gentleness. Moreover, his spirit animal was a White Shark, rated as highly dangerous. No matter how gentle he acted, he could not suppress the predator in his bones.
In short, like Fu Tingchuan, he was someone not to be trifled with.
Wen Leling figured this dispute probably started because of him. Though he did not know the specifics, he definitely could not let the fire spread. He had to take one of them away immediately.
He looked up at Fu Tingchuan again. Fu Tingchuan also looked down at him. When he wanted to look back at his other option, he heard Fu Tingchuan ask in a slightly less sharp tone, “Is the onboarding finished? If so, I will take you away.”
Though it was a question, Fu Tingchuan gave Wen Leling no room to reply. He gripped his shoulder and used his broad chest against his back to push him forward. As they passed Song He, Song He turned and reached out to grab Wen Leling’s wrist.
Wen Leling quickly grabbed the man’s hand back, forcing Fu Tingchuan’s descending hand to stop in mid-air. He said urgently, “Wait a moment.”
Fu Tingchuan did not respond immediately. He stared overbearingly at Wen Leling for a while before lowering his hand, wanting to see what he intended to do. Before he could ask, Wen Leling had already turned to negotiate with Song He: “Another day, okay?”
Watching the door to success with high expectations, Song He found that once he got close, the other side of the door was endless darkness. One second his heart was blooming, and the next, it was hit by a torrential rain that killed him down to the roots.
Afraid that being difficult would push Wen Leling further away, he could not find the words to make him stay. He reluctantly let go of Wen Leling’s hand.
Once they were far away and the footsteps had faded, Song He still stood there. His hands hung at his sides as if he were dissatisfied with his own weakness; he squeezed them so hard it felt like he might crush his own bones.
After a long while, he swung his hand against the nearby wall with a bang. Blood began to drip from his knuckles, but he seemed to have lost all sensation of pain. His powerless, bloodshot eyes looked toward the people gathered nearby.
There were Sentinels and Guides, watching the commotion from the light and the shadows. They whispered in surprise and excitement. Feeling Song He’s cold, heavy mental pressure, the Sentinels present fell as silent as cicadas in winter; the discussions stopped instantly.
With a grim expression, Song He turned and strode in the opposite direction from where Wen Leling had gone.
He did not realize that as soon as he disappeared around the corner, the heavy atmosphere vanished. Discussions broke out even more violently and recklessly than before, like a clap of thunder. They impatiently pulled out their phones, their faces lit with the excitement of having discovered a shocking piece of gossip.
