After A Max-Level Celestial Master Transmigrated Into The Body Of A Sickly Beauty's Substitute - Chapter 9
At the Lan family banquet, anyone without an invitation was naturally barred from entry, especially given the young man’s bizarre attire. Everyone else at the banquet wore suits or formal gowns, but the young man wore robes and an outfit that made him look like a Daoist priest. The Lan family had initially come out to see him because he claimed he could cure Lan Ting, but upon seeing how young he was and how strangely he was dressed, they were collectively disappointed.
“I am Gui Hezang, the 178th-generation chief disciple of the Maoshan sect.”
The young Daoist was polite, bowing to them as he introduced himself, but in the eyes of the Lan family, who did not believe in the supernatural, he could not shed the suspicion of being a con artist. Lan Lin glanced at him but did not speak rudely. “Sorry, my brother is feeling unwell today, so we will not bother you.”
Gui Hezang, with his strange name and equally strange demeanor, smiled as if he could not understand the polite refusal. He toyed with a bizarre compass in his hand, performing complex calculations with his fingers, then laughed in surprise. “The young master of the Lan family does not seem to have any issues today. He will see me.”
The Lan family members exchanged puzzled, frowning glances at his cryptic behavior. Just as they were wondering how to remove this little swindler without ruining the banquet atmosphere, a commotion arose behind them.
Someone whispered in surprise, “Is that Lan Ting?”
“Why is his hair white?”
“Dyed, probably,” someone guessed.
“Did they not say he was blind? How is he walking so steadily as if nothing is wrong?”
“Indeed.”
Hearing the conversation, the Lan family looked back. Lan Ting held a blind cane, but it served little purpose; he moved lightly and fluidly. Apart from the slightly slower pace, there was no sign of a visual impairment. Mu Chun stayed by his side, speaking up to remind him when to turn or where the entrance was. Only then did the crowd realize that Lan Ting was truly unable to see.
As the youth slowly approached, his peerless face made people feel a surge of pity. Some guests whispered with regret, “What a shame.” It was a pity that such a person had gone blind.
Lan Lin heard these whispers and felt a surge of displeasure. He scanned the crowd, his gaze darkening. The people holding such thoughts received the warning and quickly lowered their eyes. However, they were still somewhat dissatisfied: he was blind, so why couldn’t they talk about it?
When Lan Ting reached them, Lan Lin took his hand in concern. “Why did you come out?”
Lan Ting tilted his head, his voice slow and gentle. “I heard someone can cure my eyes, so I came to see.”
The Lan family fell silent. Gui Hezang, who was still being treated as a fraud, laughed cheerfully. “Exactly, you are here to see me.”
The Lan family did not want Lan Ting to be disappointed. His father gave Lan Lin a signal, which he immediately understood. Lan Lin persuaded him, “There is no rush. Let him discuss it with Father first. Your health is poor; go back and rest with Brother.”
Before he could finish, the youth moved his wrist and pulled his hand away. His tone, while seemingly docile, held an undeniable firmness. “No need. Let him in.”
The Lan family did not want to discourage him, but they also could not refuse. Finally, Lan Lin frowned at Gui Hezang and said, “Follow me.”
“Alright.”
Gui Hezang’s attitude was extremely unprofessional. Even as he walked past Lan Ting, he looked him up and down without any reservation and blew a discordant, off-key whistle. Looking at his behavior, no one would call him anything but a swindler.
Lan Lin brought them to a room behind the main hall. He had intended to tell Gui Hezang to leave, but Lan Ting spoke first. “Brother, go out. I want to talk to him alone.”
Lan Lin hesitated for a long time, but faced with his brother’s stubborn silence, he finally rubbed his head and compromised. “Then talk.”
Gui Hezang was half a head shorter than Lan Ting. Lan Ting’s body was 179 centimeters tall, and because of his frailty, he appeared exceptionally slender. Gui Hezang was about five or six centimeters shorter, making it particularly noticeable when he looked up at someone.
After observing him for a long time, Lan Ting smiled, his tone gentle. “Have you seen enough?”
“Just about.” Gui Hezang rested his chin on his palm and smacked his lips.
Lan Ting’s tone remained gentle. “What have you discovered?”
The man looked very regretful. He spread his hands and said, “I discovered that my plan has failed.”
“What plan?” Lan Ting asked bluntly.
Gui Hezang was equally straightforward. “A treasure was lost from my sect, and the divination result indicated it was related to you. I had intended to make a deal with you. If I am not mistaken, your eye injury was caused by metaphysical means. I have the eyes of an avian here; if ground into powder and swallowed, it will cure you immediately.”
As he spoke, Gui Hezang’s tone grew increasingly regretful. He stared at Lan Ting’s eyes and added, “But you do not seem to need it.”
Although it was slightly different from what he had guessed, Lan Ting would not let all his cards be seen. He remained composed. The youth nodded slightly. “You are correct. However, I have never seen the treasure you speak of.”
Gui Hezang snapped his fingers and smiled playfully. “It will be related to you in the future.”
Lan Ting smiled again, his tone indifferent. “Then could you tell me why you appeared outside my house last night?”
Caught in the act, Gui Hezang did not even blush. He said, “Naturally, I wanted to investigate, but it is a pity that you discovered me before I could do anything.”
Gui Hezang gave him a thumbs-up. “Impressive.”
Lan Ting smiled subtly. Gui Hezang understood that Lan Ting had agreed to see him only to warn him against any more tricks. Although he had never heard of the other party before, a single encounter was enough to know that Lan Ting was not to be trifled with. After thinking for a moment, Gui Hezang simply pulled a wooden token from his robes.
“If this deal does not work, we can make others. This is a token of Maoshan; it can command one of my ghost servants.”
Lan Ting did not refuse his gesture of goodwill; he took it without looking at it. Gui Hezang smiled immediately. “If any spiritual objects appear by your side in the future, you can contact me through this token.”
Having achieved half of his goal, Gui Hezang put his hands behind his head and said, “Until next time.”
“I will not see you out.” Lan Ting fiddled with the token in his hand and then put it away.
After Gui Hezang left, he turned toward Mu Chun, who had stepped forward, and looked at him with an innocent, harmless smile. “You intended for me to meet him on purpose.”
It was not a question, but a statement of fact. Mu Chun did not expect Lan Ting to say that, and his expression stiffened. He was clearly not a good liar, and being called out made his neck turn bright red, making it impossible to ignore. Mu Chun’s eyes darted around, feeling terribly guilty. Finally, he gave a deep ninety-degree bow. “I, I wanted him to see you.”
Mu Chun’s family ran a funeral business. For some reason, this profession had allowed them to grow their company into a powerful force, but only the Mu family knew that they were truly dealing in the business of the dead. His family was deep in the metaphysical world, and the elders were all in this line of work, but Mu Chun lacked the talent.
He had noticed something wrong with Lan Ting’s eyes at first glance, but his own skills were insufficient to see more. It just so happened that Gui Hezang had visited, and while others did not recognize him, Mu Chun knew how powerful Gui Hezang was. Thus, he had guided Lan Ting to meet him. It was meant to be for Lan Ting’s benefit, but Mu Chun did not know why it had failed and why Lan Ting had seen through him so easily.
His face turning deep red, he said awkwardly, “I did not mean to hide it from you; it is just that your family does not believe in this stuff.”
They stared at each other for a long time. The other party had no expression, which was chilling. Mu Chun’s voice grew weaker and weaker, finally becoming as faint as a mosquito’s buzz. After a long while, Lan Ting patted him on the shoulder and smiled. “Do not let it happen again.”
