- Achieving A Happy Ending With The Tragic Female Lead [Quick Transmigration]
- Chapter 79 - Arch-Rivals X Fake Heiress
The hospital was brightly lit deep into the night. Compared to the bustling main hall, the surgical corridor was noticeably desolate.
A person sat in the waiting area, her brown coat stained with mud. Her left sleeve was rolled up above the elbow, revealing an arm tightly wrapped in gauze. Her hand hung naturally at her side, dried blood still tracing her fingertips.
Feeling nauseous from the lingering scent of disinfectant, she stood up to get some air. A sharp, tugging pain shot through the side of her head, but she managed to walk to the window regardless.
The hospital windows could only open a crack, offering a view just above the emergency entrance.
People moved back and forth on the steps in the night. Suddenly, a flash of bright color burst into view, like a blue butterfly, only to vanish just as quickly.
A cool breeze drifted through the gap, carrying away some of the clinical smell.
After standing by the window for a few minutes, the woman instinctively reached for the phone in her pocket. She pulled it out only to see a screen shattered into four pieces, when lit, it was a blurred mess of multicolored lines, rendered completely useless.
She watched a nurse pass by the corridor entrance and decided to head toward the junction to ask for help.
However, before she had taken more than a few steps, that same splash of blue she had seen at the entrance burst into the corridor.
The blue figure stood still for a moment, looking around to get her bearings. Once she identified her target, she ran toward her, stumbling and frantic.
The butterfly had found its withered tree to rest upon, folding its wings.
Guan Yue held the person tightly, her eyelids trembling violently as her lashes brushed against Su Mi’s neck, causing a slight itch. It wasn’t just her eyelids, her entire body was shaking.
Su Mi used her uninjured hand to hold her. “It’s so late, why are you here?”
She caught a glimpse of the little assistant in the distance, who peeked in but didn’t approach.
“I thought it was you… I thought the one going into surgery was you…” As soon as Guan Yue spoke, her voice broke into uncontrollable sobs, trembling with grievance.
Su Mi felt warm liquid against her neck. She could only stroke the back of the girl’s head with one hand. “I’m sorry. The signal was bad back there, the explanation over the phone might not have been clear. I wasn’t the one seriously injured.”
Due to days of rain, they had encountered a landslide on their way out. Fortunately, the driver reacted quickly and accelerated to dodge it.
However, as they swerved, an oncoming car appeared. That driver was also spooked by the landslide and accidentally floored the gas, charging toward them.
Su Mi’s driver had to dodge again. In the repeated maneuvering, the wheels skidded, and the car overturned.
After the accident, only Xiao Xin remained conscious. Su Mi had fallen into a brief coma, while the driver suffered the most severe injuries.
The driver of the other car eventually braked, got out, called the police, and summoned an ambulance.
Because the signal in that area was poor, Xiao Xin’s attempts to contact the outside world were intermittent, leading to the misunderstanding.
Su Mi had woken up later. Since Xiao Xin was lying down for observation due to a concussion, Su Mi took over the phone. When the calls came back through, she explained the situation to everyone until the battery died.
Afterward, Su Mi had come to the surgical wing to sign the consent form for the driver’s minor surgery, which is why she had been waiting there instead of the observation room.
“I explained it to the director later. Didn’t they tell you?” Su Mi asked.
“I didn’t know at first, I only found out later.” Guan Yue had been so panicked she lost her wits. Once she got in the car, she couldn’t even process the messages on her phone. It was only later that her assistant told her the latest news.
Guan Yue lifted her head, backing away slightly.
Su Mi looked at her. Guan Yue’s hair was messy, and her eyes were red, she looked both pitiful and aggrieved.
“Where are you hurt?” Guan Yue’s voice was terribly hoarse, as if she had been suppressing her emotions for too long.
Su Mi lifted her arm slightly. “My hand, and a small scratch on my head. Everywhere else has been checked. I’m fine.”
Guan Yue wanted to check her head, but since Su Mi was taller, it was difficult to see. She settled for looking down at Su Mi’s bandaged arm. The wound seemed to be on the inner forearm, and the gauze was quite long.
“Is the wound long?”
“A few stitches,” Su Mi replied, glossing over the details.
Suddenly, Su Mi felt a few hot tears fall onto the back of her hand.
“Don’t cry, I’m fine.”
“Can I… can I hug you again?” Guan Yue asked, sniffing.
“Mm, you can.” Su Mi wiped away the tear tracks from the corner of her eye with her fingertips.
This time, Guan Yue carefully avoided her injured arm, but the strength of the hug was much greater than before.
It was as if she finally felt safe enough to use force, or perhaps she was re-confirming that Su Mi’s presence was real.
“I’m sorry,” Guan Yue suddenly said.
“Hm?” Su Mi didn’t know why she was suddenly apologizing.
“I shouldn’t have said those things before you left.” Just mentioning it caused Guan Yue’s voice to choke up again.
On the way there, she had thought about those words countless times, the regret nearly drowning her.
Su Mi smiled. She realized this person must have been brooding over her own words, which is why she was saying this now.
She thought for a moment and said, “Children’s words carry no harm. It has nothing to do with you, so don’t overthink it.”
Guan Yue pouted. “I’m already this old, what kind of ‘child’s words’ are those?”
Su Mi said calmly, “If your mental age is three, you’re a child.”
Guan Yue suddenly stopped feeling sad and felt like biting her.
The little assistant, who had been out of sight, suddenly appeared. Just as she was about to speak, she saw Su Mi quietly raise her injured hand to make a “shush” gesture, signaling her to stay quiet.
The assistant instinctively silenced herself, but the people behind her arrived as well.
Several familiar figures appeared at the end of the corridor. The director and assistant director were among them. When they saw the two people embracing in the middle of the hallway, they all stopped in their tracks.
The director was somewhat moved and said to Guan Yue’s assistant, “I didn’t expect Xiao Guan and Xiao Su to get along so well during filming.”
The assistant director looked at the two of them, hesitating: “How is the ophthalmology department in this hospital?”
At the end of the corridor, the previously closed operating room door suddenly opened, and a doctor walked out.
Hearing the noise, Su Mi turned around and led Guan Yue over. The director’s group followed suit.
Upon hearing the good news, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. No one wanted to hear bad news.
When Guan Yue turned around and realized so many familiar people were there, and that her hand was still held in Su Mi’s, she felt a wave of embarrassment and nervousness. Fortunately, no one seemed to pay much attention.
The director then asked about Su Mi and Xiao Xin’s injuries. After confirming there were no hidden wounds, he sighed in relief. “By the way, Xiao Su, your manager couldn’t reach your phone, so she contacted me. She said she’s taking a flight tonight and should arrive tomorrow morning.”
Su Mi nodded. “Okay, thank you, Director.”
“This was truly a close call. We were terrified when we heard the news at the set. Xiao Guan was especially anxious, she ran here without even changing her clothes,” the director remarked.
Guan Yue, being called out, suddenly felt restless, fearing the director would ask why she was so frantic. She hadn’t thought of an answer yet.
Luckily, the assistant director broke the tension. “Now is not the time for this. People are still injured. Go rest, and we’ll go handle the other matters.”
Everyone quickly realized that standing around chatting wasn’t ideal. After the patient was wheeled out of surgery, the director told an assistant to follow them while he and the assistant director went to speak with the doctor.
As for Su Mi, she naturally returned to the observation room. She was supposed to stay there for monitoring but had only left because there was no one at the surgery wing.
Guan Yue followed her back. The little assistant followed too, though she proactively kept a distance.
On the way, Guan Yue asked about Xiao Xin’s condition. “Is Xiao Xin’s injury serious? Can she not get out of bed?”
Su Mi told her, “She has a concussion. The doctor advised against her walking around.”
Guan Yue’s knowledge of concussions was limited to scripts and TV dramas; she had never seen one in person.
But she saw it soon enough when they returned to the observation room.
Xiao Xin, lying on the bed, saw Su Mi and Guan Yue return together. She suddenly sat up and was about to speak: “Urgh!”
From Guan Yue’s perspective, Xiao Xin took one look at her and threw up. She looked at Su Mi with a pained expression. “…Am I that disgusting?”
Hearing this, Xiao Xin hurriedly looked up and instinctively shook her head in denial, resulting in another: “Urgh!”
Su Mi laughed and pulled her inside. “The doctor said this is a sequel of the concussion. She isn’t doing it to you on purpose.”
Xiao Xin tried to reach for the water on the cabinet. The little assistant, who had been helped by Xiao Xin in the past, rushed forward to hand it to her.
Just then, a doctor entered to take Xiao Xin for an exam. The assistant went to the lobby to get a wheelchair and took Xiao Xin away.
The observation room had curtains for privacy. Though they weren’t soundproof, they provided a physical barrier. Su Mi led Guan Yue to the innermost bed.
“Where is the injury on your head?” Guan Yue leaned in as soon as Su Mi sat down.
Su Mi turned her head slightly and pointed to the side. “I bumped it. The doctor disinfected it and checked it, it’s nothing serious.”
Guan Yue carefully parted her hair, finding the spot Su Mi mentioned. She saw a high, swollen bump, the broken skin stained with yellowish-brown medicine. it looked quite frightening.
After a long silence, Su Mi turned back to look at her.
“I haven’t finished looking yet,” Guan Yue said anxiously.
“Why look so closely?” Su Mi pulled her closer to sit down. “Were you that worried about my safety?”
“Otherwise, what would I be doing here? Seeking medical treatment?” Guan Yue snapped.
Su Mi thought to herself that if there were a cure for being stubborn/stiff-mouthed, she would definitely take her to see a doctor for it.
Having said that, Guan Yue had a sudden flash of inspiration. Her eyes sparkled slightly. “I know! If the director asks why I came, I’ll say I came to see a doctor and just happened to stop by to see you.”
She even felt she was quite brilliant.
Su Mi laughed upon hearing this. “What kind of illness? Lovesickness? Everyone already saw the way you were hugging me just now.”
She cruelly laid out the facts before Guan Yue.
Guan Yue jumped up in shock. “What?!”
Sitting on the hospital bed, Su Mi looked up at her face. “You dared to rush out to find me regardless of the consequences, but you don’t dare to admit your feelings, Miss Guan?”
Guan Yue didn’t answer her question. Instead, after a moment of silence, she suddenly asked, “Why did you call me ‘Miss Guan’ the day we first met?”
Generally, in this industry, people naturally call actors “Teacher So and So” as a standard courtesy.
Su Mi paused for a beat. “Because I came to see you.”
Not the actress, Guan Yue.
Sister Yu rushed to the hospital immediately after her flight landed. She didn’t have time to say much to the crew members waiting for her, she just wanted to see if Su Mi was safe.
The staff led her to the outside of the observation room but didn’t follow her in.
Sister Yu, mindful that it was after 5:00 AM, entered very cautiously. She saw Xiao Xin asleep on the bed and an unfamiliar young girl sleeping on the waiting chair by the wall.
She looked toward the inner section, but her view was blocked by the curtains. Wearing high heels, she could only tiptoe carefully inward.
With great effort, she reached the innermost stall and reached out to pull back the curtain. After seeing the scene on the bed clearly…
Sister Yu clutched her heart and took two steps back.
