- Chapter 68 - Rivals X Fake Heiress
Su Mi closed the door and walked back. At a glance, she saw Guan Yue’s back as she lay down on the bed again. On the bedside table sat the water glass and the medicine she had provided earlier, they remained untouched.
She walked over, picked up the glass, and felt its temperature. The heat radiating from the glass exterior felt slightly scalding, but when she took a sip, the internal temperature of the water was actually normal.
“I’ve tested the temperature, it’s not too hot,” Su Mi called out, trying to get her up.
However, Guan Yue, facing away from her on the bed, didn’t react at all. Su Mi set the glass down, leaned over, placed a hand on Guan Yue’s shoulder, and turned her over to face upward.
With her eyes closed, Guan Yue furrowed her brows and muttered something. Her tone was so blurred that the words were unintelligible.
Su Mi leaned down slightly. “Guan Yue, get up and take your medicine first.”
She heard Guan Yue mutter again. This time, Su Mi leaned closer. “What did you say?”
Guan Yue, her sleep interrupted yet again, opened her eyes and said with a note of dissatisfaction, raising her voice slightly, “Su Mi, you are seriously annoying.”
Su Mi, naturally, wasn’t going to argue with her now. “Once you take this medicine, you can go back to sleep. I won’t disturb you again.”
Guan Yue seemed to be weighing the truth of her words. Eventually, with Su Mi’s help, she sluggishly sat up and held out her hand unhappily, gesturing for Su Mi to hand her the items.
The gesture was entirely natural, the classic image of a pampered young lady waiting to be served.
Seeing Su Mi restrain her temper to deliver the water glass into her hand, the innate urge to be difficult with this rival began to stir in Guan Yue’s bones again.
“It’s still very hot,” Guan Yue said, frowning. She handed the glass back to Su Mi.
“It only feels hot on the outside. I just drank some; it’s not hot inside,” Su Mi explained patiently.
Guan Yue pursed her lips. “It’s hot anyway. Besides, just because it’s not too hot for you doesn’t mean it’s not too hot for me.”
Despite being confused from drinking too much, her mind was still sharp.
Su Mi held the glass in silence for two seconds, then stood up to grab a bottle of mineral water. She added some to the glass and handed it back. “It’s definitely not hot now.”
Guan Yue took a sip, then frowned at Su Mi again. “It’s so cold. I don’t like it.”
“……”
Su Mi stood before Guan Yue, staring at her silently. The latter began to feel a bit uncomfortable under the gaze, wondering if she had pushed her luck too far.
However, Su Mi let out a soft sigh and, without a word, took the glass back to the electric kettle to add more hot water.
Watching Su Mi’s dejected figure as she walked away, Guan Yue lay back down and rolled over on the bed happily.
It wasn’t often she got to see Su Mi frustrated like this. Usually, whenever Su Mi tutored her in math, she was terrifyingly strict, her eyes practically scrolling with the text: ‘Are you an idiot?’
Today, she finally had her revenge.
But Guan Yue was still exhausted. No sooner had she lain down than sleepiness washed over her again. She found a comfortable spot, hugged the quilt, and closed her eyes once more.
On the other side, Su Mi was “meticulously” adjusting the temperature, ensuring that both the exterior of the glass and the water inside were to Guan Yue’s satisfaction. Naturally, this took some time.
She kept an ear out for the sounds from the bed. There had been the sound of rolling around, but it had soon gone quiet.
When Su Mi returned to the bedside, Guan Yue had, as expected, fallen back asleep.
If possible, she didn’t want to wake her, but she had to. Fortunately, Guan Yue wasn’t in a deep sleep, and Su Mi managed to wake her with little effort.
Guan Yue was understandably displeased. When Su Mi handed her the glass, she barely touched it with a finger and declared, “Too hot, I won’t drink it.”
She prepared to lie back down, but Su Mi wasn’t about to let her get away with it this time.
Su Mi wrapped an arm around her waist to keep her from lying down, narrowing her eyes. “Guan Yue, are you messing with me?”
No matter how dull her senses were, Guan Yue realized something was wrong. Just as she was about to shake her head in denial, she saw Su Mi suddenly tilt her head back, take a mouthful of the water, and then slam the glass down onto the nightstand.
The “thump” perfectly matched the beat of Guan Yue’s heart.
With her free hand, Su Mi gripped Guan Yue’s chin and tilted it up. Looking for her target, she expertly covered Guan Yue’s lips with her own.
Guan Yue’s eyes widened involuntarily. The familiar moist, warm sensation on her lips pulled her thoughts backward, flashing through countless chaotic scenes, yet she couldn’t catch any concrete information.
Su Mi transferred all the warm water from her mouth. Even after finishing, she didn’t leave immediately, instead, she lingered, kissing her for a while before letting go.
Pressing her forehead against the other’s, Su Mi asked, “Do you still think the water is hot?”
Guan Yue’s gaze was somewhat dazed. She stared blankly at Su Mi. “Hot…”
The “heat” she had just felt was mixed with the water that had been passed over.
“Hot?”
Su Mi’s simple word snapped Guan Yue back to her senses. “N-no, not hot…”
Hearing the answer, Su Mi calmly pulled away from her forehead and picked up the medicine and the glass. “Can you take the medicine now?”
This time, Guan Yue was very proactive. She took the medicine and downed it with the water in one gulp. Because she drank too fast, she ended up choking.
“Slow down.” Su Mi frowned, patting her back gently, but she felt the girl coughing even harder, even trembling slightly.
Am I really that scary?
Finally finishing her coughing fit, Guan Yue glanced at Su Mi and quickly looked away. “I… I’m sleepy.”
Su Mi reached out and turned off the bedside lamp that had been lit for the medicine. “Mhm, go to sleep.”
After lying down, Guan Yue stole a glance at Su Mi’s profile. For some reason, her heart was racing. She told herself it must be because she was so dizzy that she was having hallucinations.
Sitting by the bed, Su Mi saw her lips moving slightly as if saying something. She leaned in closer to listen and vaguely caught the word “nightmare.”
Su Mi: “……”
Once she was sure Guan Yue was asleep again, Su Mi left the bedside and sat on the sofa. She took the opportunity to update the director on Guan Yue’s situation.
She hadn’t had time earlier, but finally, she did.
The director replied after a moment, expressing concern and well-wishes for Guan Yue and showing understanding.
Su Mi had checked earlier and saw that there were solo scenes for her scheduled in the afternoon. She asked the director if her scenes could be moved up, and the director agreed.
This way, Guan Yue could rest a bit longer.
Just as Su Mi finished settling the most important matter, Xiao Xin sent a message asking if she should bring up a double portion of lunch.
Su Mi glanced at the person sleeping on the bed and agreed, specifically instructing her to avoid spicy dishes and to buy more sweet-flavored ones.
This time, the food was delivered by Xiao Xin and Guan Yue’s junior assistant. However, the assistant hid behind Xiao Xin, not daring to look Su Mi in the eye or even ask how Guan Yue was doing.
She now fully believed that Teacher Su wouldn’t do anything to her boss. Furthermore, Teacher Su even knew that the boss didn’t eat spicy food and liked sweet dishes.
She had only learned these preferences after being Guan Yue’s assistant for some time, after all, Guan Yue didn’t reveal her likes and dislikes to the public. Usually, she just ate whatever the crew provided, appearing quite approachable.
She just had a bad temper and looked like she was ready to offend someone at any moment, but she only targeted people who were actually problematic… with the exception of Teacher Su, of course.
“Thank you. Have you two eaten?” Su Mi took the lunch and asked casually.
“We bought some too, we’ll head back to our rooms to eat,” Xiao Xin said.
Su Mi nodded and closed the door after they left.
She set the food down but didn’t open it to eat. Instead, she took clean clothes and went into the bathroom. By the time she finished showering, it was almost time to head to the set, so she didn’t have time to eat.
Before leaving, Su Mi left a note. As she wrote it, she couldn’t help but think the scene felt familiar; fortunately, this time, she hadn’t lost the other person from the start.
After finishing these chores, she headed out to the filming location.
When she arrived, some staff members were still eating. Su Mi went straight to the dressing room. The makeup artist had already been notified and was waiting for her.
By the time Su Mi finished her makeup and changed into her costume, the preparation work on set was mostly complete.
Once the lights and scenery were set, the director began calling the actors to their positions.
This scene was primarily to establish the relationships within the Duan family and reveal the restless undercurrents beneath the surface of the household.
Duan Yuebai’s mother was the primary wife of the Duan patriarch. Her mother came from an old aristocratic background, though the family had declined with the times, her status remained noble. Duan Yuebai was her mother’s only daughter, so even the patriarch, who favored sons over daughters, treated his eldest daughter with respect.
Duan Yuebai was even allowed to participate in major family decisions.
After the patriarch fell ill, the primary wife took charge of the household. However, the patriarch’s health showed no signs of improvement. Over time, the sons of the various concubines became restless, wanting to unite and seize control of the family from Duan Yuebai’s mother.
To their surprise, Duan Yuebai suddenly returned. They were collectively intimidated by this sister they hadn’t seen in a long time, but emboldened by their numbers, they plucked up their courage.
The outcome, naturally, did not go as they hoped.
The scene was filmed exceptionally smoothly. Almost every shot involving Su Mi was a “one take,” and the director didn’t even need to step in to give notes.
When other young actors struggled to get into character, Su Mi would occasionally offer a few words of guidance, helping them find the right state quickly.
At this moment, everyone finally saw that Empress Su’s reputation for both character and acting prowess was well-deserved. The director was particularly satisfied.
On the other side, Guan Yue woke up about forty minutes after Su Mi left.
She was a bit dazed when she opened her eyes. Her head wasn’t as dizzy anymore, but she couldn’t remember how she had returned to the hotel.
Guan Yue sat up and rubbed her face to try and clear her head. When she got out of bed to look for her slippers, she didn’t see her usual fluffy ones. She thought she just hadn’t put them on when she came back, but when she went to look for them, she saw several unfamiliar open suitcases on the floor.
She walked over and squatted down, looking closely for a while. She realized none of it was hers.
This wasn’t her room.
Realizing this, Guan Yue instinctively stood up and accidentally bumped into the coffee table behind her. She turned around and saw a note left on top.
The handwriting was very familiar. After all, she used to see it almost every day and would often be teased by Su Mi for her own “ugly” handwriting.
Her head was still a bit foggy, and she was too lazy to think too much.
For instance, she didn’t dwell on why she was in Su Mi’s room; since she used to frequent Su Mi’s room before their relationship cooled, her subconscious deemed this normal.
After reading the note, Guan Yue’s gaze fell on the lunch box next to it. She gave a soft “tch” and muttered, “So fussy.”
Su Mi had reminded her in the note to heat the food before eating, but Guan Yue chose to ignore that advice.
However, Guan Yue was indeed a bit hungry. She briskly opened the bag and took out the dishes. Although the food wasn’t completely cold, the texture had declined, but luckily many of the dishes were to her taste.
She ate while looking at the note. “Everyone has a phone, yet you have to be unique and handwrite it. Do you just have to show off your handwriting?”
Then she remembered that she had seemingly blocked the other woman on WeChat. Many years had passed, she didn’t know if Su Mi had ever changed her number.
Halfway through the meal, Guan Yue felt thirsty and looked around for a glass. She spotted a glass of water on the nightstand and walked over to grab it.
As she picked up the glass and prepared to drink, familiar yet strange memories began to flood into her mind like a tide.
Guan Yue stared blankly at the water glass. She reached up to touch her lips, taking two steps back as if she couldn’t believe it.
