- Chapter 62 - Arch-Rival X Fake Heiress
When Su Mi opened her eyes, she saw the familiar structure of the work pod once again. The interior was silent, she could even hear the sound of her own breathing.
Subconsciously, she touched the ring on her finger, gripping it with two fingers and giving it a slight turn. As if drawing a sense of security from it, Su Mi closed her eyes momentarily before stepping out of the pod.
A robot approached her, its voice as cheerful as ever.
“Hello, Employee Su Mi. Congratulations on excellently completing your second mission. Below is your mission completion information.”
Mission Mode: Intermediate Point Reward: 300
The robot proceeded with the mission settlement just like last time, but Su Mi listened half-heartedly. While points played a crucial role in the Administration’s year end evaluations, Su Mi didn’t particularly care about that right now.
There was only one thing on her mind.
“Whose authority is required to view information on completed mission worlds?”
“Currently, you can apply to your direct supervisor, who will then report it to the Adjudication Office for approval~”
“Would you like me to apply to your supervisor, Supervisor Li, for you?”
Su Mi made her choice without hesitation: “Apply.”
Inside an office, Supervisor Li was pacing back and forth. It wasn’t until someone entered the room that she rushed toward them.
“Director, what should we do? That person wants to check the mission worlds. Every world automatically records outsiders to distinguish identities. Modifying the data won’t be fast enough.”
The woman addressed as Director slowly picked up an insulated thermos from the desk, unscrewed it, and blew gently on the tea, letting the aroma drift.
“Young lady, don’t be in such a hurry when things happen. There’s always a way if you think about it.” The Director walked to the window, her gaze landing on the distance. “Just say the system needs a data overhaul and applications are temporarily suspended. Then, quickly send her to the next world.”
Hearing this, Supervisor Li breathed a secret sigh of relief. She had thought the same thing but hadn’t dared to suggest it, fearing she might accidentally offend the person under her charge.
“Understood, Director. I’ll get on it immediately.”
When Su Mi received the reply, her face showed little emotion. A domestic robot was diligently cleaning the surrounding room, its blue lights flashing rhythmically.
She picked up a water glass from the table and drank it all in one go, when she set it down, a slight mist clung to the glass walls.
Su Mi left her quarters and headed to the work pod facility, unlocking the door and entering. Practiced as ever, she lay down in her designated spot. Her gaze focused on the ceiling for a moment, and as the gas within the pod was released, she slowly closed her eyes.
She began her entry into a new world.
At 9:00 AM, Su Mi turned off the alarm on her phone. After sitting up for a minute in silence, she got out of bed to wash up. After a simple breakfast, she changed clothes and headed out.
At 10:00 AM sharp, Su Mi walked into Dingxing Entertainment. Though she was wearing a mask, someone still recognized her. It was a minor artist passing by, looking at Su Mi with eyes full of admiration, appearing nervous and apprehensive.
In the entertainment industry, Su Mi was a unique existence. Graduating from the Academy of Drama, she was scouted by a major director at a young age. She starred as the female lead in the movie Stubborn, bursting onto the scene as an orphaned girl and sweeping the three major domestic gold awards, becoming the youngest Best Actress in history.
The general public was won over by her acting, and her stunning face earned her a massive following of “visual fans.” Since then, Su Mi’s career had been smooth sailing, appearing in major big-budget productions and laying a solid foundation for her career.
This minor artist was one of those fans. Plucking up her courage, she stepped forward to greet her: “Good morning, Teacher Su.”
Su Mi nodded slightly to the person. Someone was calling the artist from the other side, so she could only hurriedly leave a “I really love your movies” before rushing off.
Su Mi watched her leave and waited in front of an empty elevator. The elevator doors clearly reflected her mid-length, blue-gray hair, half tied up, the rest brushing against her neck. Her bangs partially obscured her narrow, cold eyes. She had dyed her hair for her previous role and hadn’t changed it back yet.
Due to a lack of sleep, there was a trace of fatigue between her brows. Her phone vibrated; she checked the caller ID and unhurriedly answered.
“Hello, Sister Yu.”
The moment she answered, the elevator doors opened. Su Mi rubbed the back of her neck as she walked in, vaguely noticing two people standing in the corner. She didn’t pay much attention, nor did she notice one of them stiffen slightly.
She was about to swipe her card to press the floor button when she paused, her destination floor was already lit. It must have been pressed by the other people in the elevator.
Su Mi shifted her gaze to the two people on the other side. One was a tall woman with black hair, wearing a mask and sunglasses, completely covered up, revealing only a sliver of her fair neck.
Probably not an artist from the same company, Su Mi thought. Because of the “system maintenance,” she currently didn’t have her system with her and couldn’t identify the person. Furthermore, she had a strange feeling that the woman was looking at her too.
The little assistant beside the woman widened her eyes in delight upon seeing Su Mi, but she suppressed her excitement, saying reservedly, “Hello, Teacher Su.”
Su Mi nodded at her. The woman beside the assistant shifted her posture, her high heels clicking softly. The assistant immediately went silent.
On the phone, Sister Yu was asking where she was. Su Mi looked at the rising floor numbers and said casually, “In the elevator, almost there.”
Sister Yu gave a few more instructions before ending the call. Once the call hung up, Su Mi leaned against the wall, sliding her finger across her phone screen to browse messages.
Ding!
The elevator chimed, and the doors slowly opened. Su Mi tucked her phone away to leave, her peripheral vision catching the woman again. This time, she lingered on her for two seconds longer before regaining her focus and stepping out.
Just as she stepped out, the woman and her assistant brushed past her. Su Mi thought she heard a very faint “hmpf,” but it vanished in an instant.
Before leaving, the assistant nodded to Su Mi and whispered politely, “Goodbye, Teacher Su,” before scurrying off to chase her boss.
Su Mi walked to the office in her memory, knocked, and entered after hearing her manager’s voice.
Sister Yu looked up: “Why are you alone? Xiao Xin didn’t follow you?”
Xiao Xin was Su Mi’s assistant.
“Mhm. There’s nothing much going on lately, so I gave her a few days off.” Su Mi sat on the sofa and removed her mask, revealing her cold, flawless features. There was a slight darkness under her eyes, prominent against her pale skin.
Su Mi had just finished filming a movie a few days ago and was supposed to be resting. This was the exact point in time she had entered this world, and she was still adapting to it. She wouldn’t have come to the company if it weren’t for Sister Yu’s call.
Sister Yu quickly organized the documents in her hand. “You know why I called you here, right?”
Su Mi gave a faint “Mhm.”
Sister Yu had worked with her for five years, she knew that the fewer words Su Mi spoke, the more stubborn she was being. She sighed. “What I meant last night was that you just finished a project, you should rest more. That ‘Dual Female Lead’ movie isn’t even from a particularly good production team. There’s no need for you to take it.”
Su Mi poured herself a cup of hot tea. “I’ve read the script. I can take it.”
Seeing her like this, Sister Yu knew she probably couldn’t be persuaded. “Do you know the other female lead is Guan Yue? I looked at her file last night. She’s been debuted for three years but has almost no fame. If you go, you’re just doing charity to boost her status.”
Su Mi knew, of course. She took this script specifically because of Guan Yue, the female lead of this world.
Guan Yue was originally a wealthy heiress raised with doting love. It wasn’t until an accident that the Guan parents discovered she wasn’t their biological child and brought home their real daughter. The “True Heiress” lived in harmony with the parents, while Guan Yue felt herself becoming an outsider. One by one, the halo and friends that once surrounded her disappeared.
Guan Yue had tried to connect with her biological parents, but they felt she was too arrogant, constantly praising their “real” daughter for being hardworking and sensible. Naturally, Guan Yue didn’t want to be around them either. Eventually, she chose to leave that home. The Guan family only made a few hypocritical attempts to find her, and seeing her refusal to return, they stopped bothered.
A graduate of a dance academy, Guan Yue chose to enter the entertainment industry. Because of her lingering pride, she was bullied heavily at the start, but she managed to survive in the massive industry based on her face and decent acting skills. Though not famous, she could support herself.
In this daily grind, Guan Yue met a kindred spirit in the entertainment industry, one of the original female leads of the script Su Mi insisted on taking. The two fell in love during filming and supported each other’s growth. Just when Guan Yue thought she had finally found someone to rely on, the other woman was exposed for being engaged to a male star.
Betrayed by someone close once again, Guan Yue fell into a painful self-reflection, eventually giving up and fading from public view.
In this world, Su Mi had known the female lead since childhood, but the two had never gotten along. After the “True and False Heiress” incident, they hadn’t contacted each other at all.
“Su Mi, from a manager’s perspective, I really don’t suggest you take this project. It doesn’t help your future, and if word gets out, people might think you’ve run out of resources,” Sister Yu tried to persuade her again.
Su Mi, returning from her thoughts, took a sip of tea. “I’ve already agreed.”
Sister Yu nearly choked. She said crossly, “You’ve learned to act first and report later. Then why did you even come here today?”
Su Mi swallowed the tea: “To tell you in person.”
Hearing these words that were enough to choke someone to death, Sister Yu took several deep breaths, reminding herself that this was her “Lady of Fortune” and she had to provide for her.
She finally conceded. “Fine, fine. Take it if you want. But the filming schedule looks tight. Make sure you rest these few days, your health is your capital. If your fans find out, they’ll come after the studio for overworking you again.”
Sister Yu had a headache thinking about the PR she’d have to handle later, but she was somewhat used to it. Compared to artists with moral failings or bad characters, her Best Actress was quite low-maintenance. In six years in the industry, there hadn’t been a single romantic scandal or professional blemish. Aside from being a bit cold and occasionally stubborn, she had no major flaws.
Many people in the company were jealous that she signed Su Mi, but what they didn’t know was that Su Mi had approached her first and set down several professional rules.
“Mhm. Thanks, Sister Yu.” Su Mi stood up to leave.
Sister Yu was about to go back to work when she remembered something and called out, “Also, when you join the set, watch your expressions. Director Qu and the others know your temperament, but this crew is full of strangers. If they don’t know you, they’ll think you’re being a diva because of that cold face. The new interns here are all too scared to talk to you.”
Sister Yu’s worry wasn’t baseless. Su Mi’s features were somewhat sharp and cold. Combined with her height and the way she looked at people with half-lidded eyes, she gave off an icy vibe.
Su Mi nodded to show she understood. As she opened the door to leave, she couldn’t help but think of the woman in the elevator.
“Anything else?” Sister Yu asked, seeing her lingering at the door.
“Nothing.” Su Mi finally walked out and headed straight for the elevator.
After turning the corner, she saw the woman from before standing by the elevator. She was leaning on her little assistant, bending down to adjust her high heels. The woman had removed her mask, though her sunglasses were still on. She was looking at her foot, her lips pouting slightly as if she were dissatisfied.
Even with only half her face visible, her beauty was unmistakable.
Sensing Su Mi’s approach, the woman turned her head and immediately stood up straight. Su Mi walked to her side to wait for the elevator. For a moment, the air was silent.
The moment the elevator opened, the woman hurriedly tried to step in, but her foot twisted. Her body lost balance, tilting toward Su Mi. During the scramble, something fell to the floor with a crisp clink.
In the next instant, Su Mi’s strong hand supported the woman’s elbow. She looked down at her. The woman happened to look up at the same time; the eyes behind the sunglasses held a glass-like shimmer.
A strange sense of familiarity rose in Su Mi’s heart.
“Sister, are you okay?!” The little assistant rushed over, apologizing profusely to Su Mi. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Sorry, Teacher Su.”
Su Mi didn’t mind the accident. Once the assistant arrived, she retracted her hand. However, the woman hadn’t stabilized her footing yet. Su Mi’s release caused her to wobble again, looking like she was about to fall.
But Su Mi had already turned her head. Her gaze was caught by a bracelet on the ground. She bent down to pick it up, just missing the hand the woman reached out to grab her for support.
Fortunately, the elevator door was right there. The woman stumbled a few steps and grabbed the door frame to steady herself. She looked at Su Mi, who had “avoided” her, with gritted teeth.
Beside her, the assistant whispered a reminder, “Sister Guan, watch your facial expressions.”
Su Mi, who had just picked up the item to return it, froze when she heard that name. By the time she stood up and turned around, she only saw the woman’s silhouette as she walked away in her high heels.
