- Chapter 41 - Cold Professor X Obedient Beauty
The person on the other end of the line was momentarily speechless after hearing Su Mi identify herself. Their tone stiffened as they hung up after a few brief questions.
Looking at the disconnected call, a trace of mockery appeared between Su Mi’s brows. The person hadn’t even bothered to ask about her identity in detail, if Lin Nanyue were truly in danger, she certainly couldn’t count on them. This show of concern felt more like a vent of frustration over an obedient pet slipping out of control.
Su Mi gave her wrist a slight shake, clutching the phone in her palm. She turned back into the room and placed the phone on the nightstand. When she looked over at Lin Nanyue, she realized her own cold hair was damp against her neck, she had forgotten to blow-dry it.
Before heading into the bathroom, she contacted a friend on her phone, confirming they were available to drop off two sets of clean clothes.
After drying her hair, Su Mi sat on the sofa outside, slowly “adapting” to the memories and life belonging to the original owner of this body while checking the messages on the phone.
The friend arrived quickly, in less than half an hour.
Su Mi rose to open the door. Standing outside was a beautiful woman wearing a short white blazer and a matching hip-hugging mermaid skirt. Despite the pure white color, she managed to imbue the outfit with a certain sultry charm.
This was Su Mi’s college friend, Song Lingyin.
“It’s 12:20 AM. If anyone else sent me that message at this hour, I would have blocked them long ago.”
She had been at a gathering with Su Mi tonight, but after they parted, she was pulled away for emergency overtime. She had just finished and was heading home when she received Su Mi’s message. Since she traveled often, she kept several changes of clothes in her car.
“Thanks. Did you come alone?” Su Mi asked.
“Of course.” Song Lingyin shook the two bags in her hand. “Everything is brand new. I might not have bras that fit you both, and it’s a bad time to buy them, so I put nipple covers in there instead.”
She leaned lazily against the doorframe and peered inside, her tone turning teasing. “I told you to just stay at my place for the night, but you insisted on a hotel. Turns out you had a secret date behind my back?”
Su Mi glanced at her and took the bags. “No, it was an accident.” She paused before explaining, “Someone threw up on me.”
Song Lingyin was slightly shocked. “Wow. Did you scold them until they cried?”
“…What kind of image do you have of me?” Su Mi started to close the door.
“Hey….I can’t even come in? I’m the labor you called for, after all. Or is there really something in there I shouldn’t see?” Song Lingyin complained.
“No, just wait a moment,” Su Mi said, showing no mercy as she shut the door.
She changed into fresh clothes directly in the living room, then took the other bag back into the bedroom, placing it on the nightstand along with the room card.
On the bed, Lin Nanyue was sound asleep, looking innocent with her eyes closed.
Su Mi took a notepad from the side, wrote a few words, and tucked it under Lin Nanyue’s phone.
During her sleep, Lin Nanyue seemed to sense something. Her eyes fluttered open a crack, catching a glimpse of the woman’s profile under the dim light. A few strands of smooth long hair fell across Su Mi’s face; her pressed lips looked noble and indifferent. As she leaned down to write, the shifting light and shadows made the scene feel surreal.
With her head down, Su Mi didn’t notice she was being watched. After finishing, she took one last look at Lin Nanyue, who appeared to be sleeping obediently again, gathered her belongings, and walked out.
Song Lingyin was standing outside, bored. She yawned as Su Mi emerged. “It’s so late. Are you going home or staying at my place?”
Su Mi had her own apartment, but it was in another district, about a 40 to 50 minute drive. Song Lingyin had originally wanted her to crash at her place, but the “young mistress” had refused.
“Going home,” Su Mi replied curtly.
Song Lingyin rolled her eyes. “Then why did you make me wait here?”
Su Mi checked the time. “It’s too late. It’s not safe for you to go back alone at this hour.”
“You’ve been away for a few years; did you bring a conscience back with you?” Song Lingyin was a bit touched. The old Su Mi had a cold personality, they only became friends because Song Lingyin had been “relentlessly persistent” during university.
Su Mi dropped Song Lingyin off first, then borrowed her car to drive home since the latter didn’t have to work the next day. Before leaving, Song Lingyin suspected Su Mi had only invented the “heartwarming” reason for the ride just to get the car.
It was nearly 1:30 AM when Su Mi reached her residence. After a quick wash, she went to bed.
Perhaps because the night had been so exhausting, she slept deeply, her mind continuously integrating the original owner’s memories in her dreams.
It wasn’t until three days later that she finally ended this cycle of falling into occasional confusion. The system reappeared, asking her to choose her companion system as before.
Looking at the row of options on the panel, Su Mi chose “Coal Ball” again. When Coal Ball saw her, its eyes were filled with a mix of joy and worry.
【Great to see you again. Please choose whether to start the mission.】
Su Mi followed the procedure.
【Mission started. The difficulty for this world is: Medium Mode.】
Unlike the “Easy” mode of the previous world, this mission had moved up to “Medium.” During her training, Su Mi had learned that mission difficulty isn’t determined by a single factor; some workers failed because they accidentally lost sight of the mission’s core focus.
She looked over her upcoming schedule and decided to spend the next few days carefully researching the female lead to understand her better.
One week later.
Outside the C University cafeteria, Lin Nanyue, holding a breakfast wrap, was being dragged across campus by her roommate.
Lin Nanyue tried to protect her breakfast while running. “Slow down, Hanhan! The lecture doesn’t start for 20 minutes, we should make it.”
Yan Han pulled her along without stopping. “No way! One of the guest speakers is a specially appointed professor from the psychology department of the neighboring university. I heard she’s incredibly popular there. This lecture hall is definitely going to be packed, we have to get there early to snag seats.”
The lecture was originally scheduled for earlier, but it was postponed until today because the multimedia equipment in the tiered classroom had broken.
“Is it because her teaching is that good?” Lin Nanyue couldn’t quite understand this “idol chasing” behavior. She had only been dragged along because she had nothing to do in the dorm today.
Yan Han turned to question her: “Did you miss the group messages again? Information about that teacher was posted in the class chat.”
Lin Nanyue gave an awkward smile. “I’ve been busy with my internship lately, so I haven’t had time to check.” Unless it was a message tagging her specifically, she rarely looked at the class group.
The two sprinted to the tiered classroom. As expected, it was already quite full. They could only find seats in a far corner toward the back.
Lin Nanyue’s arrival attracted many gazes. She was exceptionally beautiful and stood out in a crowd. Some people wanted to approach her, but they were stopped by someone speaking with a sarcastic tone.
“Bro, don’t bother. Last time I asked for her contact info, she rejected me. People like her look down on us; only wealthy heirs like Fang Qian are good enough.” The boy’s voice wasn’t loud, but it was just enough for those nearby to hear.
Lin Nanyue turned to look at the boy, who suddenly felt uncomfortable under her gaze. “What? Did I say something wrong?”
A wave of whispers broke out. Yan Han knew that Lin Nanyue had been coming and going early and late for work recently, and some nasty rumors had started. She leaned into Lin Nanyue. “Don’t mind them. These guys are just gossipy.”
Lin Nanyue glanced at her, said nothing, and turned back. She sipped her lukewarm soy milk, unconsciously biting the plastic straw. Her mood only improved when she looked out the window at the lush green trees.
Suddenly, a small stir erupted in the crowd. Even Yan Han pulled on her sleeve to get her to look.
Lin Nanyue looked over while still biting her straw. The guests were taking their seats on the stage. When her eyes swept over one of them, she froze.
The bright lights from above fell upon a slender figure dressed in a high-quality silk shirt. Her medium-length hair was draped over her shoulders. Her expression was calm and her eyes distant, giving her a cold, otherworldly aura.
“What did you say that teacher’s name was?” Lin Nanyue asked her roommate urgently after snapping out of it.
“Her surname is Su, name is Su Mi.” Yan Han pulled out her phone and showed her the typed name. “How about it? Isn’t she stunning?”
Looking at the characters for “Su Mi,” Lin Nanyue could no longer hear the surrounding noise. She could only hear her own slightly accelerating heartbeat. The blurry face that had been lurking in her mind for over a week finally snapped into clear focus.
On the podium, Su Mi swept her gaze over the students. Her eyes lingered on a certain corner for a split second before moving on. She gave a brief self-introduction to the crowd.
The students were enthusiastic, and it took the organizing teacher a while to calm everyone down.
During the Q&A session in the middle of the lecture, someone raised their hand eagerly and asked if Su Mi could tell what they were thinking at that moment.
Su Mi walked to the edge of the podium, leaning one hand on it. Her sleeve slid back to reveal a portion of her fair forearm. She looked at him flatly. “Do you want a fortune telling session?”
This triggered a wave of laughter. The student blushed and shook his head, stammering.
Su Mi continued: “Psychology isn’t used to guess what others are thinking every second. Psychology is the study of how people think, it studies intelligence, personality, and how psychological problems arise and are solved.”
“I know some people view psychology as just counseling, and some even equate psychologists with mysterious ‘hypnotists.’ But in reality, hypnosis is just one method of treatment, and only a small number of people are trained in it.”
Su Mi brought the atmosphere back to a serious track, and the students gradually became engrossed in her words.
By the end of the lecture, many people felt like they hadn’t had enough. A crowd gathered around Su Mi to ask more questions about psychology.
Yan Han wanted to drag Lin Nanyue up there too, but the crowd didn’t disperse for a long time, and Yan Han had an important interview to get to, so she had to leave first. Lin Nanyue sat by herself on the side, waiting until the crowd finally thinned out before she walked forward.
Su Mi closed her book and looked at Lin Nanyue. “Is something the matter?”
Lin Nanyue held her soy milk cup, the straw bitten flat. Her voice was as soft as a mosquito’s hum: “Pro… Professor, was it you that night?”
