- Chapter 16 - Eldest Senior Sister x Junior Sister
Their resting place was on the outskirts of the forest, and it didn’t take long for them to return to where they had originally started.
The vegetation where Su Mi had previously sliced off a leaf had already grown anew, swaying gently in the breeze.
Looking ahead, though the view was open, the terrain was far from flat. Countless hills rose and fell in the distance, and they had less than an hour remaining.
In this place, there were no sun, moon, or stars, and the plants offered no help in discerning direction. Su Mi and Wanqi Yue could only use the stream as a reference, heading upstream.
They trekked along the riverbank. Although the path was rough, the terrain was relatively level, making the journey less taxing. Along the way, they discussed the matter of the stone mirror.
The activation of that stone mirror was peculiar, it required an equal number of people on both sides to prevent those inside from escaping. Since Su Mi and Wanqi Yue had entered this side, Fang Yun and Yue Qianzhou had likely entered the mirror world on the other side.
Wanqi Yue finally began to feel a belated sense of worry for her Second Senior Sister’s safety.
Su Mi, however, wasn’t overly concerned about Fang Yun. She had considered this before: the dark shadow’s original plan was likely for her and Fang Yun to be together. In the end, the shadow seemed to want to pull her away from the vortex and didn’t appear to intend to kill her. Therefore, it was highly probable that the other side of the mirror world was a safe existence.
Wanqi Yue didn’t respond to Su Mi’s analysis. After a moment, she asked gloomily, “Who was that dark shadow? Do they know you, Eldest Senior Sister?”
For some reason, when facing that shadow, Wanqi Yue felt as though the person was trying to steal something away from her.
Su Mi replied bluntly, “I don’t know.” In her memory, there was no one who matched that figure.
As they spoke, they reached a higher elevation. Looking into the distance, they could see countless branches of the stream converging from all directions, seemingly originating from that patch of dark, brooding mountains.
Now that they were closer, the mountains looked like a splash of thick ink, faintly shifting.
Aside from a few lonely flowers and shrubs, they hadn’t seen any other living creatures on their journey, yet the riverbanks were scattered with the bleached white bones of animals.
Looking at the stream, Su Mi couldn’t help but associate it with the patterns on the mirror’s surface. “Junior Sister, what did the mirror surface look like on your side at that time?”
When Su Mi had crossed over, she had tried to glance at Wanqi Yue’s mirror, but by the time she noticed it, it had already turned into a dark vortex.
Wanqi Yue recalled immediately, “There was a pattern on the mirror that gradually filled up from top to bottom.”
Su Mi remembered that her side had filled from the bottom up. Perhaps there was a connection between the two.
“Eldest Senior Sister, it’s that flower!” Wanqi Yue suddenly cried out, pointing to a pink flower not far from her feet. It looked exactly like the one Su Mi had seen before.
Without waiting for a reply, Wanqi Yue cautiously leaned down, her back curving as she reached out.
Su Mi noticed several tears in Wanqi Yue’s dark clothing, with dark, dried stains around them that were hard to spot unless one looked closely.
In that brief moment of distraction, Wanqi Yue had already extended her hand, nearly touching the flower.
Su Mi suddenly remembered something and tried to stop her: “Stay back”
“What….Achoo!” As Wanqi Yue turned her head, she was sprayed directly in the face with a blue floral mist from the suddenly opening bud, causing her to sneeze twice in succession.
The flower then “grew legs” and ran away, just like the last one.
Ignoring the flower, Su Mi hurriedly pulled Wanqi Yue up, cradling her face to inspect it closely. “Do you feel unwell anywhere?”
She had noticed that the mist the flower spat out this time was blue, not purple.
Wanqi Yue opened her eyes to see her Eldest Senior Sister looking at her with a focused, meticulous gaze. Her earlobes gradually turned hot, and she shook her head slowly. “No.”
The next moment, the two felt a faint tremor beneath their feet. The thickets in the distance let out a “rustling” sound of movement.
Su Mi frowned and turned her head, her face showing a hint of vigilance.
A beast with a mass of dark fur emerged from the brush. It shook off the greyish-white vegetation clinging to its body, its blood-red eyes filled with a murderous aura as it stared intently at the two of them, seemingly sizing them up.
The beast stepped cautiously to the side, a low growl rumbling in its throat, its sharp claws glinting with a cold, metallic light.
Su Mi released Wanqi Yue, shielding her behind her back as she held a talisman, facing the beast.
“Roar” The beast suddenly let out a furious cry. Its powerful forelimbs leapt high as it lunged toward them.
Talismans moved faster than the beast, landing in front of it first. Several clones arranged themselves in a row, emitting a ghostly blue light that blocked the beast’s attack.
Su Mi felt something was wrong. Usually, Wanqi Yue would have charged forward by now, yet she was strangely quiet.
Su Mi’s unease reached its peak when she turned around to see Wanqi Yue crouching on the ground. She was quietly hanging her head, clutching her knees, it was impossible to tell what was happening.
But Su Mi couldn’t worry about that now, she had to deal with the immediate threat first.
The talismans blocking the beast began to show cracks. Just as they were about to break, Su Mi grabbed Wanqi Yue from the ground, spinning away to narrowly avoid the beast’s charge.
The beast’s claws left long gouges in the rocks as it skidded to a halt by the riverbank, preparing to pounce again.
Su Mi dodged repeatedly. While her talismans kept it from getting too close, her spiritual energy consumption was becoming an issue. She looked toward the stream.
Though she still had doubts, there was no better way. She raised her hand to manipulate the water, drawing several talismans directed at the beast. The moment they landed, they extended into massive chains of water, binding it and creating a makeshift prison.
The previously rational beast suddenly became frantic. Its claws lashed out again and again at the water chains, even at the cost of injuring itself. Its roars pierced the clouds.
[Master, I can help you.]
Su Mi tossed “Coal Ball” from her shoulder. It sparked with lightning and struck the water chains. The beast was instantly engulfed in a massive blue light, its body twitching uncontrollably. Its dark fur rapidly turned grey, and finally, it collapsed. Its massive form dissipated into the wind, leaving only bleached bones behind.
Having dealt with the beast, Su Mi looked at the girl beside her. “Junior Sister?”
Wanqi Yue was awake, but she looked off. She was covering her eyes, not daring to look. “Eldest Senior Sister, I’m scared.”
Something is definitely wrong with her.
With Wanqi Yue in this state, it was best to leave this place as soon as possible. However, as they tried to depart, the weather turned against them, and a torrential downpour began.
Su Mi managed to find a rocky cave that offered some shelter from the rain, though they were already soaked.
Wanqi Yue had been quiet the whole way, and once inside the cave, she huddled close to Su Mi. The cave was damp and cold, with the constant drip-drop of water echoing against the sound of the rain outside.
Su Mi was displeased by the cold, wet sensation of her clothes. Beside her, Wanqi Yue suddenly let out a small sob.
“It’s no good, Eldest Senior Sister. I’m going to die.”
Su Mi’s jaw tightened for a moment. Thinking the wounds on her body had taken a turn for the worse, she moved to check on her. Wanqi Yue blinked her rain-soaked lashes and pouted.
“A delicate little flower like me… if I get soaked by the rain, I’ll wither and die.”
“…”
Su Mi withdrew her hand and turned back to sit down.
Next time I see that flower, I’m just going to kill it.
Seeing Su Mi move away, Wanqi Yue followed her, looking at her with watery eyes, sounding pitiful. “Eldest Senior Sister, what should I do?”
Su Mi closed her eyes. “A little rain won’t kill you.”
“It will.”
“It won’t.”
Wanqi Yue insisted, “It will.”
Su Mi: “…It won’t. But if you keep talking, I can’t guarantee it.”
Wanqi Yue hung her head in disappointment and stopped speaking.
Fifteen minutes later.
Su Mi, thinking Wanqi Yue had finally calmed down, felt a head burrowing into her arms. Wanqi Yue looked up at her with clear, bright eyes.
“Eldest Senior Sister, I’m cold.”
