- Chapter 15 - Eldest Martial Sister x Junior Martial Sister
In the distance, Wanqi Yue came trotting over, her gaze entirely captivated by the “coal ball” in Su Mi’s hands. She couldn’t resist reaching out to poke it, the texture was unexpectedly soft.
She had assumed the fur might be coarse, but it felt limp and velvety to the touch, and its body was equally soft.
Facing her, the coal ball blinked frantically at Su Mi, pleading for rescue. However, Su Mi’s attention was clearly not on the creature, but rather caught by the smile gracing Wanqi Yue’s face.
Wanqi Yue continued to poke it playfully, her dark, clear eyes curving slightly as she looked up. “Eldest Martial Sister, it..”
The moment their eyes met, the heavy darkness of the sky began to scatter. Faint, misty light brushed over their faces, casting a soft, shimmering glow.
They were too close.
Su Mi instinctively wanted to take a step back to create some distance, only to realize her back was already against a tree trunk. There was no room to retreat.
She lowered her gaze slightly, settling on a specific spot as she noticed something else. “Your collar isn’t folded correctly.”
Likely because the hollow tree had been too dark and Wanqi Yue had been distracted while dressing, her collar hadn’t been fully turned down.
“Where?” Wanqi Yue asked with a hint of embarrassment, reaching up with one hand to feel for it.
“Let me help you,” Su Mi said, reaching out. Her fingers brushed against Wanqi Yue’s hand as she reached for the collar.
Wanqi Yue quickly withdrew her hand, while her other remained resting on the coal ball. She stood there stiffly, her neck slightly tilted back, staring unblinkingly at Su Mi’s downcast eyes.
When the Eldest Martial Sister was focused on a task, her expression was always one of intense concentration, looking like a sacred and inviolable goddess of the snowy peaks.
As expected, I was overthinking things before, Wanqi Yue thought. How could the spotless Eldest Martial Sister ever be stained by the dust of the mortal world?
Su Mi gently folded down the upturned collar. Her knuckles inevitably grazed the girl’s neck that warm, delicate sensation forced her to recall certain moments and touches from earlier. She felt as though she were once again enveloped by that soft aura.
Her throat tightened slightly. The thumb that had been smoothing the collar moved upward, stroking the pale skin of the neck as she used the back of her hand to tuck away a stray lock of hair that had been caught in the neckline.
Wanqi Yue flinched at the sudden contact.
Before Su Mi could offer an explanation, the coal ball in her hands suddenly wobbled and let out a small, aggrieved sound.
Su Mi frowned at it, her gaze carrying a hint of a warning.
The coal ball, unable to speak its grievances, could only swallow them back down.
Only then did Wanqi Yue realize she had unconsciously gripped the little creature’s fur too tightly. She hurriedly let go and pulled her hand back, only to find a small tuft of black fur pinched between her fingers that she had accidentally pulled out.
Fortunately, it was still quite dark. Feeling guilty, she hid her hand behind her back in an attempt to conceal the evidence of her “crime.”
“Eldest Martial Sister, can we keep it?” Wanqi Yue asked, changing the subject.
Su Mi considered that the portable system might actually be useful here, so she nodded. “We can.”
“Then should we give it a name? It’s so black, what would be good?” Wanqi Yue adopted a look of serious contemplation, though the names she suggested were shocking. “Cuihua? Tieniu? Taohong? Daheizi?”
Hearing this string of names made Su Mi frown. She hadn’t intended to interfere thinking she would let her call it whatever she liked but these names were simply too much.
“These names…”
Wanqi Yue tilted her head. “Are they not good? Ninth Martial Sister is skilled in Spirit Taming, and I’m just copying the names she gives her spirit beasts. She says casual names make them easier to raise.”
What on earth is she learning from her? Su Mi thought. In the end, she insisted on the name she had previously given it, allowing the portable system to retain its last shred of dignity.
Because the Eldest Martial Sister had spoken, Wanqi Yue raised no objections to the name.
As they spoke, the light on the horizon grew stronger.
The two returned to the hollow tree to rest and recuperate before deciding on their next move.
Su Mi set up a simple array at the entrance of the hollow. She then found a spot to sit cross-legged, habitually placing the coal ball on her shoulder as she prepared to close her eyes and meditate.
“Eldest Martial Sister, may I see it?” Wanqi Yue propped herself up on her hands, leaning her body toward her. Her long hair swayed slightly as she moved, and her softened voice was enough to make one’s heart itch.
Su Mi answered almost instantly: “Alright.”
Ignoring the coal ball’s tearful eyes, she plucked it from her shoulder and handed it to Wanqi Yue before closing her eyes to rest.
Seeing that its plea for help had failed, the coal ball resigned itself to its fate and stayed obediently in the heroine’s hands.
Holding the coal ball, Wanqi Yue first glanced at Su Mi. Seeing that she appeared to have entered a meditative state, she quietly turned her back. Using the sliver of light filtering in from outside, she began to rummage through the coal ball’s fur, searching for something.
The coal ball didn’t dare move, letting her do as she pleased.
After searching for a long time, Wanqi Yue finally discovered a small bald patch on the top of its head, revealing pinkish-white skin.
Seeing this, Wanqi Yue looked filled with guilt and remorse. She took out the black fur she had pulled out earlier and tried to stuff it back in to cover her tracks.
“Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to pull you bald,” Wanqi Yue whispered an apology while stuffing the fur back.
Shocked by the tragic news of its premature balding, the coal ball nearly burst into tears.
“Once we get out, I’ll definitely find a way to fix it for you,” Wanqi Yue promised.
The coal ball was miserable. The coal ball didn’t want to talk. The coal ball only wanted to return to the factory for a hair transplant.
Once the fur was “replanted,” Wanqi Yue held it up to inspect her work. Satisfied, she smiled and hugged the coal ball as she went to sleep.
It wasn’t until her breathing became long and steady that Su Mi, who was supposed to be in meditation, slowly opened her eyes.
Wanqi Yue had injuries that were difficult to heal on her own, and after everything they had been through, she was indeed exhausted. She was now fast asleep leaning against the tree trunk, her grip on the coal ball loosening slightly.
Perhaps sleeping in that position was uncomfortable, as she occasionally frowned and shifted her body.
Seeing that its master was awake, the coal ball wiggled. It tilted to the side and rolled off Wanqi Yue’s lap, causing the tuft of stuffed-in black fur to fall out instantly.
Before the coal ball could bounce its way over to Su Mi, it saw its master suddenly stand up, lean over, and walk toward it, squatting down in front of it.
Just as it thought its master was coming to pick it up, it saw those slender, jade-like hands pass right over its head. One hand supported the back of the heroine’s neck, slowly lowering her until she was lying flat and comfortable.
As Su Mi laid the girl’s head down, she suddenly turned her head toward the coal ball and stared at it fixedly.
The coal ball blinked its amber eyes, a very bad feeling budding in its heart.
Sure enough, in the next second, it felt its body grow light as it was lifted and placed directly under Wanqi Yue’s head.
Its round body was instantly squashed into an oval.
Seeing the furrow in Wanqi Yue’s brow smooth out, a faint, almost imperceptible smile appeared on Su Mi’s lips.
The coal ball finally understood: it was at the very bottom of this social pyramid.
Even though it wasn’t a biological creature and being squashed didn’t actually hurt, this was simply taking it for granted!
This was system bullying!
When Wanqi Yue woke up, she felt a bit weak, similar to the exhaustion she felt after practicing her swordplay for too long.
She opened her eyes dizzily and closed them again. She could feel that she was lying down, and it felt rather soft beneath her head.
But she remembered clearly that she had fallen asleep leaning against the wall.
When she finally regained her senses and sat up, she found that the Eldest Martial Sister was not there. Turning around, she discovered that the place her head had been resting on was a slightly flattened coal ball.
Wanqi Yue gasped in shock. She picked it up and inspected it thoroughly, terrified that she had crushed it or caused some irreparable harm.
Under her vigorous kneading, the coal ball finally regained its round shape. Seeing that it was still “alive” and seemingly fine, Wanqi Yue breathed a sigh of relief.
She set the coal ball down and was about to head out to look for Su Mi when the woman herself leaned down and ducked back into the hollow.
“You’re awake?”
Wanqi Yue nodded. She was about to stand up when Su Mi pressed a hand against her shoulder. She looked up at Su Mi, puzzled.
Su Mi looked toward her back. “Take off your clothes and let me see.”
Wanqi Yue froze for a moment, though this time she didn’t misunderstand.
She turned her back and unfastened her clothes, revealing the wounds on her back.
“Eldest Martial Sister, I feel like the wounds don’t hurt as much anymore. Are they almost healed?” Wanqi Yue turned her face slightly.
Since she couldn’t see the wounds herself, she could only judge the situation by how she felt.
On Wanqi Yue’s smooth back, the wounds looked like winding cracks. Although they were no longer bleeding, the appearance of the gashes hadn’t changed much since the medicine was applied. If not for Su Mi’s spiritual power sustaining her, they might have even worsened.
However, Su Mi replied without changing her expression, “Mhm, almost healed. Put your clothes back on.”
Wanqi Yue thought to herself that while the Fifth Martial Sister wasn’t great at fighting, her abilities as a medical cultivator were certainly beyond doubt.
“Eldest Martial Sister, where did you go just now?” Wanqi Yue asked.
“I took a brief look around the perimeter.”
Su Mi had woken up earlier than her. Seeing that the sky had returned to the state it was in when they first entered, she had gone out to investigate.
According to her observations, the flow of time here was different from the outside world. She roughly estimated that the cycle of day and night alternated about once every two hours (one shichen).
Right now, it happened to be “daytime.”
After hearing this, Wanqi Yue turned and said, “Eldest Martial Sister, let’s go look together then. We need to find a clue to get out.”
Su Mi nodded in agreement. She couldn’t keep consuming her spiritual power like this indefinitely, they had to find a way out as soon as possible.
However, in the next second, her eyelid twitched slightly. She looked away at the right moment, her tone turning a bit stiff. “Fix your clothes.”
This wasn’t like the previous “night” when the light was dim. Although this “daylight” couldn’t compare to the brightness of the real world, the visibility was clear enough.
Wanqi Yue’s clothes were only half-on, her collar was partially open, and one could catch a glimpse of the fair skin beneath.
She looked down, realized what was happening, and her face flushed crimson. Clutching her collar tight, she spun around and began frantically dressing herself.
Su Mi picked up the coal ball and walked out first to wait for her.
This time, Wanqi Yue checked herself several times. Only after confirming that her collar wasn’t flipped up did she finally step outside, her face still tinged with a faint blush.
Su Mi appeared to be lost in thought looking ahead, only snapping back to reality when she heard Wanqi Yue’s voice. They had only walked a couple of paces side by side when Su Mi stopped again and turned toward her.
Seeing Su Mi staring at her, Wanqi Yue couldn’t help but feel guilty. “Did I… did I wear something wrong again?”
Su Mi reached out and plucked a fallen leaf from the girl’s hair. Only then did she feel at ease.
“Let’s go.”
