- Chapter 12 - Trembling - A World of Ice and Fire
“A vacant, quiet place…”
These words echoed relentlessly in Li Yan’s mind. Her “well-read” brain instantly flashed through countless fragments of knowledge.
In her past life, although she had never been in a relationship, she had saved more spare time than others, time she spent intensely reading novels and surfing the web. Li Yan had read a vast array of books across various platforms, involving different races and orientations, she prided herself on possessing a romantic knowledge base no less extensive than someone who had actually dated.
The problem was, she hadn’t particularly enjoyed ABO (Alpha/Beta/Omega) novels in her previous life. Consequently, she was hazy on the specific mechanics of that world.
Take, for instance, the most crucial element: Marking.
She truly didn’t know how to perform a mark! It was a disaster, she was a top-tier student who had prepared for the wrong exam questions. What was she supposed to do now?
What made it worse was that she had clearly done it before. But at that time, she had been in a fog; looking back now, she had absolutely no memory of the process. Should she just open her mouth and ask? Wouldn’t that be a bit too private?
Seeing her silence, Xu Xinlan assumed she was struggling to find a location. She glanced at the person on the hospital bed and saw the patient’s eyelids trembling violently, her hands at her sides beginning to claw unconsciously at the sheets. Xu Xinlan’s heart tightened.
“Follow me first. She can’t wait any longer.”
Li Yan followed her gaze. Lin Yishu’s condition was gradually mirroring the state she was in when they first met. Realizing they couldn’t delay any further, Li Yan said nothing more, leaned down to scoop the woman up, and followed the doctor.
Lin Yishu had just drifted back from unconsciousness when she heard that conversation, and it left her seething with rage.
Quack! You absolute quack!
She wasn’t at the stage where a mark was necessary yet. Her pheromones were merely disordered, she hadn’t entered a full “Heat” cycle!
But in truth, Xu Xinlan wasn’t entirely to blame. The symptoms of pheromone disorder are extremely similar to a Heat cycle. Furthermore, in modern society, Omegas are rare, and those suffering from pheromone disorders are as rare as phoenix feathers. Humanity’s exploration of the secondary genders is still in its infancy, even doctors lack complete mastery of the field. A misdiagnosis was understandable.
But Lin Yishu didn’t care about that. Her violently trembling eyelids were a testament to her exasperation.
Yet, the angrier she became, the more Li Yan’s pheromones seemed to sense her distress, racing to burrow into her body in an attempt to soothe her. Lin Yishu felt as if she were trapped between ice and fire.
Her reason told her to stay calm, only by calming down could she slowly regain her strength and open her eyes to explain the situation. Her desire, however, forced her to follow the pull of the pheromones.
The bright yellow flames seemed to be testing her stance. A small spark flickered out first, drawing near her fingers before transforming into a butterfly that perched on the tip of her index finger. The vibration of the butterfly’s wings sent a wave of numbness deep into her bones.
Unconsciously, Lin Yishu’s curled fingers unfurled, as if welcoming its arrival. The butterfly gently bowed its head, kissing her fingertip, and then took flight. As her fingertip went cold, a sudden sense of emptiness rushed in.
Before she could adapt to that void, countless butterflies fluttered toward her. They landed on her fingertips, her ears, and her chest. Before she could react, they transformed back into red flames, enveloping and invading her without hesitation.
Lin Yishu found it difficult to bear and let out a soft whimper. But once the pleasure passed, shame surged forward. She bit her lip to keep from making a sound, using every ounce of her strength to resist the temptation of the pheromones while simultaneously trying to headbutt the person holding her.
Little did she know that with her current strength, the “attack” felt less like a strike and more like acting spoiled.
Li Yan felt the head in her arms nuzzling against her chest like a kitten. The blood rushed to her head, and her brain began to ring. She smelled that rose fragrance again, it should have been wrapped in biting snow, but now it carried a scorching fire.
It felt as though her nerve endings were being held in the other woman’s hands, with just a slight movement from Lin Yishu, Li Yan couldn’t stop her entire body from trembling. Her pace quickened instinctively.
Walking ahead, Xu Xinlan didn’t look back, but she seemed to sense the urgency as her strides grew longer.
Lin Yishu, struggling against her physiology while monitoring the two, felt her teeth itch with rage when she noticed their pace quickening.
These two… they clearly don’t understand anything! What on earth are they doing?!
Xu Xinlan stopped in front of a somewhat secluded ward and pushed the door open, gesturing for Li Yan to enter quickly. “This is a temporary marking room specifically set up by our hospital. It’s been disinfected. If you don’t mind, stay here for now. Come find me when it’s over.”
Li Yan was already feeling lightheaded. If not for her sheer willpower, her legs would have given out. Carrying the woman, she squeezed inside.
Just as Xu Xinlan was about to close the door and leave, Li Yan suddenly turned around, her eyes bloodshot. “Dr. Xu, could you please… tell me how exactly I’m supposed to mark her?”
Xu Xinlan paused, feeling that the nation’s physiological education still had a long way to go. She replied: “Pierce the gland and inject your pheromones into her body.”
As a thick wave of pheromones rushed toward her, the doctor decisively shut the door. She was not the type of physician to overstep boundaries.
Inside the room, Li Yan carefully laid the woman down. In the cramped space, even if she wanted to retreat, there was nowhere to go. The back of her neck felt swollen and aching, screaming with a powerful craving.
But Lin Yishu was still “unconscious.” Li Yan felt she shouldn’t take advantage of her. Even though there had been a previous mark, she hadn’t been lucid then; she had marked her in a daze. This time, she was awake.
Yet the tiny room was saturated with their mingled pheromones. The scent of roses seemed to sense her hesitation, forming an airtight wall of fragrance that hemmed her in.
Li Yan felt as if she were standing in a sea of flowers. Countless rose petals formed an arched bridge, enticing her to cross. On the other side of the bridge, Lin Yishu was waiting.
As if annoyed by her lingering, the petals suddenly swept her up, delivering her to her destination without a word. Lin Yishu reached out a soft, waiting hand and pulled her down.
Li Yan felt herself ignite instantly. Every drop of blood in her body shivered with excitement.
