- Chapter 11 - Fever - Marking Her
Xili Village was a small settlement under the jurisdiction of the Lishu Commune. The commune had its own health center, which served as the primary medical stop for residents of the surrounding villages dealing with minor ailments like headaches or fevers, mainly due to its proximity.
Naturally, this was Li Yan’s first choice.
The person in her arms was burning with an alarmingly high temperature. Her entire face was so flushed it looked as though she had just been pulled from a boiling vat of oil. When Li Yan reached out to touch her, the heat was so intense she instinctively recoiled.
Her brow furrowed deeply. How could she have burned up like this?
Abandoning all other thoughts, Li Yan grabbed a nearby quilt, wrapped the person tightly, and sprinted toward the health center. Behind her, Li Chunmei who had intended to borrow a wooden cart from a neighbor, found herself completely unable to keep up with Li Yan’s frantic pace.
The usual ten minute walk to the health center was cut to less than ten by Li Yan. When she arrived, a young girl working there was just about to lock the doors and head home. She froze in shock at the sight of someone drenched in sweat amidst the freezing ice and snow.
“Comrade, she has a fever! Please, help me check her quickly!” Li Yan cried out, her heart consumed by anxiety.
Even in the future, an era of advanced medical technology, people still died from high fevers, let alone in this time period.
The young girl looked closer and realized Li Yan wasn’t just carrying a bundle of quilts, but a whole person. Surprised by the woman’s physical strength, she hurried forward.
“This fever is too high! No, our health center can’t handle this,” the girl exclaimed in alarm, seeing the person’s face so red she looked as if she had stopped breathing. “You have to take her to the town hospital for an IV!”
Li Yan’s heart sank to rock bottom at those words. She turned to leave immediately.
The town hospital was at least an hour’s walk away. She feared Lin Yishu didn’t have that kind of time.
Wait, the factory hospital! How could I forget their own factory hospital!
Having made up her mind, Li Yan changed direction and raced toward it.
After a short distance, Li Chunmei’s voice drifted from behind, shouting through heavy breaths: “Yanyan, wait! I borrowed a cart! Push her on this!”
Li Yan finally heard her. Glancing at the thick layer of snow on the road, she made a snap decision and ran back a few steps. She placed Lin Yishu onto the cart and took the handles from Li Chunmei, immediately pushing forward.
Li Chunmei didn’t waste words. She pulled a neatly folded stack of bills from her pocket and stuffed them into Li Yan’s pocket. “I won’t go with you,” she panted. “I’m worried about your grandmother and A-Can at home. Here is fifty yuan, it should be enough. If it’s not, tell the hospital you’ll owe them and come back home to get more.”
Li Yan nodded and set off, the cart moving rapidly under her strength.
The cart indeed saved a lot of energy. Li Yan ran all the way to the factory hospital and burst through the doors. It wasn’t until she had placed the patient on a hospital bed that her strength finally gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor.
Lin Yishu felt as though she were floating on a small boat. The surrounding waters were turbulent, and though she drifted with the current, she could find no shore.
She tried to open her eyes to find her bearings, but everything was a vast expanse of white, as if she were trapped in a thick fog. Lin Yishu struggled desperately, but no matter how hard she tried, the scenery remained unchanged, keeping her prisoner.
Gradually, a feeling of desperate defeat washed over her. A voice deep in her heart seemed to whisper that struggling was futile and that she should simply accept reality.
But then, she caught a whiff of a familiar scent.
It was Li Yan.
The chaotic sounds around her began to rush in like a tide.
“…It’s a fever caused by exhaustion combined with a cold. The patient has likely been very anxious lately, with her nerves wound tight. Combined with the cold wind today, it triggered this sudden high fever. We’ve administered an IV drip, and the fever has mostly subsided. If the high fever doesn’t return tonight, she should be fine.”
After a stranger’s voice spoke, a familiar female voice followed. However, this time, the voice was tight with worry.
“The fever has mostly subsided? Then why is her face still so red?”
“This…” The first speaker paused, silent for a moment before confirming, “The nurse just took her temperature; it is indeed within the normal range.”
Lin Yishu wanted to speak, to explain, but her mouth wouldn’t obey. She struggled to part her lips, but only managed two indistinct whimpers.
This sound was quickly swallowed by the noisy background environment. She was almost certain no one would hear her weak attempt.
Yet, in the next second, a gust of air moved toward her, and that familiar voice suddenly pressed close.
“Lin Yishu? Lin Yishu, are you awake? Can you hear me? What are you trying to say?”
Lin Yishu could feel how close they were. The other person’s breath brushed against the tip of her nose, causing a slight itching sensation. She wanted to open her mouth to tell the person to move away, but she couldn’t. The other person couldn’t understand her intent.
“Are you an Alpha?” another stranger’s voice suddenly rang out from a distance.
The person close to her drew back and stood up, their voice gradually moving away.
Li Yan looked at the woman walking toward her. She wore a white lab coat and possessed a striking, glamorous beauty.
Li Yan nodded. “I am. And you are…”
In truth, Li Yan didn’t need an introduction. She could already sense the other’s identity. As the sweet scent drifted to her nose, a word appeared in her mind, Omega.
“Shh.” The woman made a soft hushing sound and gestured with her hand, then nodded to her colleague.
The previous doctor seemed to understand something. Turning to Li Yan, he said, “Perhaps Dr. Xu can answer your questions. If you have any problems, just ask her,” and then he left.
Li Yan’s gaze naturally turned to the only remaining doctor. She seemed to realize something as well, asking tentatively, “Dr. Xu, is it possible this isn’t just a simple fever?”
Xu Xinlan looked at the Omega lying on the bed, her face flushed like a sunset, and chuckled softly. “Can’t you tell for yourself if it’s just a ‘simple’ fever?”
Li Yan’s face instantly turned bright red.
As if rewinding a tape, her mind flashed back to the first time she met Lin Yishu.
“She… she… so she is…” Li Yan found herself stuttering, the words feeling like they were burning her tongue, unable to be spoken.
Xu Xinlan watched the shy person before her while sensing the two scents in the air, which were already impatient to intertwine.
What an Alpha whose ‘outward appearance doesn’t match the inside,’ she thought.
“My suggestion is,” Xu Xinlan said, “you’d better find a quiet, empty place quickly and… mark her.”
This time, not just Li Yan’s face, but her entire neck turned crimson in an instant.
