- Chapter 35 - The Pen Spirit Game
After reviewing the full case file, the guests quickly understood that their task was to uncover clues and solve the mystery. However, they were told that on the day of the crime, heavy rain had fallen, and since the murder occurred deep in the mountains, there were no witnesses or useful information. As a result, the case had become a cold case.
During the two days in question, there had been tens of thousands of tourists at Fengyun Mountain. Since the entire mountain was open to the public and required no tickets for entry, trying to identify the murderer was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
At first glance, the case seemed impossible to solve. There were no obvious leads, and for a while, the entire room fell into silence. It was clear to the guests that this mystery was beyond their current capabilities.
Unlike previous cases they’d worked on, this time there were no visible trails to follow. Without the show’s guidance, they knew solving the mystery would be nearly impossible.
The guests were then led to another room, where a large round table had been set up. Paper and pens were placed in the center, and the table was etched with ancient, mysterious patterns and decorated with charms and talismans—lending the entire setup an eerie, ceremonial vibe suited for the upcoming Pen Spirit game.
Yu Wanyin and Qiao Sanghe took their seats at the northwest side of the table. From their position, they could see a teleprompter the production team had prepared, which would display the questions to be asked during the ritual. The two of them held each other’s hands tightly. Although the atmosphere was tense, being together brought them both a sense of calm.
The other guests returned to their seats as well. The production crew announced the start of the Pen Spirit Game.
Instantly, the lights dimmed. A single white spotlight shone down on the center of the round table. The guests’ faces were partially illuminated, casting distorted shadows that made their expressions look strange and unsettling. The lighting, which came from directly above, added to the overall eerie atmosphere.
The rules of the Pen Spirit Game were simple: first, write the question for the Pen Spirit on paper. Then, all participants jointly hold the pen over the paper, chant the incantation, and summon the spirit.
Their first question for the Pen Spirit was: What is the age of the killer?
The guests exchanged a few anxious glances. Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin joined in with the others and began chanting the incantation:
“Pen Spirit, Pen Spirit, you are my past life, I am your present life. Please answer me: how old is the murderer in this case?”
Their voices echoed in the vast, darkened room. The already ominous atmosphere became even more oppressive.
Suddenly, the air grew significantly colder. The temperature in the room dropped unnaturally fast. Even viewers watching from behind their screens—many of them skeptics—began to feel a sense of unease. Could they have really summoned something beyond their control?
Qiao Sanghe’s heart began to race. Beneath the table, she tightened her grip on Yu Wanyin’s hand. The unnatural coldness around them was disturbing. It would be a lie to say she wasn’t afraid. But the warmth radiating from Yu Wanyin’s hand was the only thing keeping her grounded and calm amidst the growing tension.
