- Chapter 34 - I Will Always Be Your Loyal Listener
Inside the luxurious five-star Sketch restaurant, impeccably trained servers welcomed every guest with polite professionalism.
Only those with elite status—wealthy or powerful—could afford to dine here. The restaurant prided itself on its strict privacy, accepting only members. Among its clientele were many high-profile public figures.
In one of the private dining rooms, Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin were escorted in.
Sitting gracefully was a young woman in a traditional black Chinese-style long dress. She held a paper fan in her slender, defined fingers. Her dark eyes, cast downward, were deep and unreadable. With exquisite features and a cool, aloof aura, she was the kind of Alpha who left a lasting impression just by being present.
“You’ve finally arrived,” she said, lifting her gaze to the two beautiful young women in front of her. Her tone was light, devoid of joy or sorrow.
Qiao Sanghe skipped any formalities and got straight to the point.
“I’m sure you already know what this is about. There’s no need to drag it out. The engagement wasn’t something either of us wanted—it was arranged by our families. I’ve found someone I truly love, and this engagement should’ve ended long ago. I understand that calling it off could damage your reputation. That’s something I failed to consider carefully, and for that, I’m sorry.”
Although neither she nor Qiu Lan ever had feelings for each other, dissolving the engagement could still affect Qiu Lan’s public image—something Qiao Sanghe was genuinely concerned about. She feared Qiu Lan might hesitate to end things for that reason alone.
To her surprise, Qiu Lan chuckled softly. “I didn’t expect you to be worried about that. But don’t be—I really don’t care. The only reason I invited you both here was because I was curious. I wanted to see for myself the person you chose.”
She stared at Yu Wanyin for a long moment. Aside from her beautiful appearance, Yu Wanyin seemed like a fairly ordinary Alpha—nothing particularly remarkable at first glance. Still, for Qiao Sanghe to choose her, she must have something unique. Otherwise, with Sanghe’s personality, she wouldn’t have chosen her lightly.
Qiao Sanghe was a little surprised by Qiu Lan’s calmness.
“Well, now that you’ve seen her, perhaps we can talk about calling off the engagement. If the Qiu family initiates it, this whole matter can be resolved cleanly.”
Qiu Lan paused in thought, then gave both women a meaningful look.
The atmosphere suddenly grew heavy.
She neither agreed nor disagreed, leaving both Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin uncertain about her stance.
“I’m willing to have the Qiu family initiate the cancellation of the engagement,” Qiu Lan finally said, “but you must promise me one thing in return.”
Both Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin immediately asked,
“What is it?”
“You’ll have to agree first. Once I’ve thought of what I want, I’ll tell you.”
Qiao Sanghe frowned slightly. “Let’s be clear—it can’t go against our principles. Anything else, we’ll consider.”
“Fair enough. Then it’s a deal. I’ll take care of it,” Qiu Lan replied without hesitation.
Neither Qiao Sanghe nor Yu Wanyin had expected her to agree so readily. They were both genuinely surprised and had to reevaluate their opinion of Qiu Lan. They had prepared themselves for a lengthy negotiation—yet it was resolved in one short conversation. Clearly, their concerns had been unnecessary.

A few days later…
Qiao Sanghe received a call from her family.
Her mother’s voice on the other end was laced with barely restrained anger.
“So, are you happy now? The engagement’s been broken off, just like you wanted. You’ve been gone for years—don’t you think it’s time you came home?”
Indeed, Qiao Sanghe hadn’t returned in years. Her fallout with her family had been so severe that she had essentially severed all ties.
But this rift wasn’t one-sided. Her parents had never reflected on their actions, never once respected her wishes. All they cared about was control—about making her into the “perfect daughter” who obeyed without question. That was how things had deteriorated so far.
Healing that kind of wound wasn’t something time alone could fix.
Though the engagement issue was finally resolved, going home might just mean being subjected to the same expectations again. After giving it careful thought, she responded:
“I’m really busy with work right now. We can talk about visiting home some other time.”
Her mother was clearly enraged.
“You’ve been a daughter of the Qiao family all these years and never once fulfilled your duties. We’ve let that slide. And now you won’t even come home?”
Qiao Sanghe realized her mother hadn’t changed one bit—still so fond of lecturing.
“I’ll come back when I have time,” she replied perfunctorily.
But her mother wouldn’t let it go.
“This so-called relationship with Yu Wanyin… it’s just for publicity, isn’t it? You’re avoiding home because—”
Qiao Sanghe didn’t wait to hear the rest. She hung up.
She had no desire to listen to that kind of talk anymore. Her parents might never truly understand her—not in this lifetime. The gap between them ran too deep.
Yu Wanyin, having overheard the conversation, sensed her distress. She walked over, wrapped her arms around Qiao Sanghe, and held her tightly. Her warmth soothed her partner’s frayed emotions.
Though Qiao Sanghe said nothing, the comforting embrace was enough.
She had long since stopped caring about the past, but every call from home reopened those old wounds.
Her family had become like a thorn lodged in her heart. Every time she thought about them, it stung.
But now, she had someone by her side. That warmth reminded her she wasn’t alone anymore—she had Yu Wanyin. And because of her, Qiao Sanghe no longer wanted to dwell on the pain.
“Yinyin, thank you for staying by my side,” she said quietly.
The feeling of having someone there to share her burden lifted the weight from her chest. Even the scars left by her family seemed to fade under the soft warmth of that embrace.
Yu Wanyin nuzzled her cheek affectionately and said with quiet determination,
“Do we really need to say ‘thank you’ to each other? Being with you is what I want most.”
Qiao Sanghe nodded. Resting in her arms, her voice grew even softer.
“I feel the same.”
Yu Wanyin was delighted to see them growing closer. Today had shown her how many emotional burdens Qiao Sanghe still carried. All she hoped was to help ease those burdens and bring light back into her world.
Lowering her head, she kissed Qiao Sanghe’s lips gently, whispering:
“I will always be your loyal listener. No matter what happens, I’ll be here—forever standing behind you.”
