- Chapter 21 - They've Already Become Their Characters
At this moment, the viewers watching the livestream were deeply moved by the two of them.
【All they want is to protect the one they love.】
【If this isn’t true love, I’ll smash my keyboard.】
【Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin, stop being so in love—I’m literally in tears.】
Though Yu Wanyin and Qiao Sanghe had very different personalities, when it came to making choices, their first instinct was always to help the other complete their task rather than selfishly protect themselves. No matter how long they’d been together, one thing was undeniable—their first thought was always each other.
Qiao Sanghe would never let Yu Wanyin leave the room. She was determined to ensure that Yu Wanyin stayed out of the ward until after 8 p.m., when it would finally be safe. If they broke the rules a second time, who knew what punishment the show might mete out?
But Yu Wanyin didn’t see it that way. Her thinking was all-or-nothing—since she’d already broken the rules once, she might as well bear the full brunt of the program’s punishment alone. Deep down, she even wanted to see what kind of unexpected event might happen.
She could feel Qiao Sanghe’s warmth and sincerity. It touched her deeply, but she also felt that she needed to give something back. That was the meaning of being her partner—no matter what happened, she would stand with her and share the consequences without hesitation.
The two of them clung to each other, sharing body heat. At that moment, the warmth from Qiao Sanghe felt different—more human, more real. Yu Wanyin realized that ever since they had met, Qiao Sanghe had changed, little by little.
The old Qiao Sanghe would never have developed feelings like this for her. But her current attitude said it all. Yu Wanyin was genuinely happy—because she had stirred something in Qiao Sanghe’s heart. That, in itself, was the best response to her own emotions. It meant she had left a mark on her.
So yes, she was happy. Incredibly happy. Grateful to have been given the chance to be chosen. And since she had been chosen, she would never let Qiao Sanghe down.
She could feel the restraints on her tightening, and sighed helplessly.
“Let me go.”
But Qiao Sanghe refused to release her. She was pressed against her, pinning her down, not letting up. If she hadn’t been so furious, she would never have acted so impulsively.
“Just give up the idea of leaving,” Qiao Sanghe said coldly. “I won’t allow it.”
Yu Wanyin didn’t listen. Suddenly, she realized that she had already defied Qiao Sanghe’s wishes twice today. In the past, she wouldn’t have dared—not for fear of her anger. But now, it seemed she had grown bolder, no longer caring about the consequences.
Under the cramped space beneath the hospital bed, their bodies were pressed close together, movements restricted. They could feel each other’s breath and heartbeat. Qiao Sanghe’s heart was racing, her emotions intense. She stared into Yu Wanyin’s eyes—those clear, dark pupils shone like stars in the night, mesmerizing and bright. If she wasn’t careful, she might fall for her completely.
Yu Wanyin curved her lips into a smile and gently kissed her on the cheek. Her lips were damp, and the kiss carried the citrusy scent of her pheromones. The two of them had previously exchanged a temporary mark, so even slight fluctuations in their pheromones could trigger a reaction.
Taking advantage of Qiao Sanghe’s momentary distraction, Yu Wanyin wrapped her arms around her slender waist, agilely flipped their positions, and pinned her down instead. Though her body pressed against
Qiao Sanghe’s soft form, she moved with utmost care, afraid of hurting her. Still, when she looked down, she saw the grievance in her eyes.
She sighed again.
“I’m sorry.”
Having taken back the initiative, Yu Wanyin left a kiss on Qiao Sanghe’s forehead before slipping out of the duty room and returning to the hospital ward.
By the time Qiao Sanghe recovered and tried to stop her, it was already too late. Her face turned pale with fury. Yu Wanyin had used her pheromones to affect her emotions and cloud her judgment—she will see how she would deal with her once they were back!
This episode had been unbearable. Who would’ve thought the Alpha she had trained would end up defying her? She couldn’t even explain how she felt—just that her mood was low, and she felt… wronged.
It was an emotion she never thought she’d experience. It felt completely foreign.
Her beautiful eyes turned slightly red, tinged with bitterness.
“Yu Wanyin, I won’t forgive you for this.”
【God, that was heartbreaking.】
【Whoever designed this mission is a monster.】
【Why can’t they act together? Why force them into opposing tasks?】
【Damn this show—it’s forcing them to betray each other!】
At exactly 8 p.m., Yu Wanyin was escorted out of the ward by the staff and never returned that night.
The next day, Qiao Sanghe received Yu Wanyin’s medical report—along with Mission Card 2.
Report 1: The patient is missing her right kidney and is in shock from excessive blood loss.
Report 2: Traces of sevoflurane (an anesthetic) found in the patient’s system.
Conclusion: The patient mysteriously disappeared from the hospital room the previous night.
After reading the reports, Qiao Sanghe couldn’t put her feelings into words. So this was what failure looked like. In the script, Yu Wanyin played a patient in the hospital, and had been targeted by an illegal organ trafficking ring. Because she had failed two missions in a row, her character had been anesthetized and had her organ forcibly removed.
Mission Card 2 was a hidden task, only available after completing Card 1.
It was her first time doing a mission solo. Yu Wanyin had always helped her with the hard parts. Most of the earlier puzzles were solved by her. A challenge like this… really wasn’t suited to her.
For the first time, Qiao Sanghe felt what it was like to be without Yu Wanyin by her side. The sense of loss hit her hard. She didn’t want to be without her. Why did the show have to split them up? They were the most in-sync pair, the best team.
Even through the screen, viewers could sense her sorrow. It felt like they were a fated couple being torn apart by the cruel hands of the production crew.
When Yu Wanyin was around, Qiao Sanghe always relied on her. Now that she was gone, the emptiness was unbearable.
As she acted alone, her mind kept replaying memories of them solving puzzles together, working in tandem, moving as one.
With a heavy heart, she tore open the envelope containing Mission Card 2. It instructed her to gather evidence of the hospital’s illegal organ transplants—and uncover the secret hidden in the director’s office. That secret could lead her to the missing Yu Wanyin.
The moment she saw that name, a spark returned to her eyes. Her once pale, lifeless features seemed to regain their glow. So the show had left a thread of hope—if she completed the mission, maybe they could leave together, maybe they could take down the human trafficking ring written into the script.
After Yu Wanyin’s mission failed, she was sent to the show’s isolation room. It was her first time there. She had never imagined this was how the production punished guests.
It was freezing cold, likely from an overpowered air conditioner. With the lights off, the room was dim and unwelcoming. Still, she could watch the show’s livestream.
When she saw Qiao Sanghe completing the mission alone, her heart felt complicated.
She could only hope Sanghe would get used to being without her.

Meanwhile—
Qiao Sanghe arrived at the director’s office to gather evidence.
Inside were photos, reports, video footage, and recordings related to human experimentation and illegal organ trafficking. There were transaction logs, names of participants, and shocking documentation: doctors who were heroes by day but monsters by night.
Over a hundred patient records were stored here, complete with details of the organs that had been removed.
These organs had been sold all over the world. Most of the victims had died. The few who survived had either become subjects of experimentation or were left disabled for life.
Yu Wanyin’s report was among them. Her missing right kidney was listed in the trafficking inventory.
It was horrifying.
“This evidence should be submitted to the police,” Qiao Sanghe thought. “Only then can the entire operation be shut down.”
Just as she made this decision, she received Mission Card 3.
It presented her with two choices:
1. Use a phone to report everything to the police and ensure the criminals were brought to justice.
2. Use a key to rescue Yu Wanyin, giving her a slim chance at survival—but in doing so, forfeit the ability to report the crime or collect further evidence.
If she chose to report, Yu Wanyin would bleed out and die due to time constraints.
【Are you kidding me?! Another forced-choice mission?!】
【This hurts too much. How is anyone supposed to choose?!】
【I mean, reporting is the right thing… but Yu Wanyin would be gone.】
【Good thing this is just a show. If this were real, it would be too cruel.】
Qiao Sanghe was torn apart by the decision. She knew what she had to choose, but the guilt and heartache were overwhelming.
The choice twisted her insides.
Her beautiful face had turned ashen, her expression nearly grotesque from emotional pain.
She wanted to scream.
But the production crew of Midnight Fairytale Season 4 just watched.
Her perfectly manicured nails dug into her palm, sharp and ruthless.
The pain snapped her back to clarity.
She chose to report it.

After the episode wrapped—
All the guests looked exhausted.
Especially Qiao Sanghe. Her usually icy, elegant features were dulled by fatigue and emotional turmoil.
Yu Wanyin emerged from the isolation room ten hours later, equally drained.
But the moment she saw Qiao Sanghe waiting for her—with red-rimmed eyes, staring at her with stubborn intensity—she could no longer hold back. She threw her arms around her, breaking down completely.
Who would’ve thought one variety show could shake them up so badly?
But then again… who cared if it was just a script?
They had already become their characters.
And it hurt too damn much.
All Yu Wanyin wanted in that moment—
Was to hold Qiao Sanghe tightly,
and never let go.
