A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 37
“That’s not right, what does it have to do with me?” Yu Ning muttered to herself after returning to her room, closing the door, and sitting at her desk.
Maybe it was because she couldn’t stand people blindly following the crowd.
That had to be it.
After thinking for a while, Yu Ning pushed the matter aside and started doing her homework.
Just a few minutes in, she suddenly put down her pen, pushed the workbook away, sighed, and then remembered that her mom still hadn’t returned her call. So, she dialed again.
After waiting a few seconds, just as Yu Ning heard a sound and thought the call had connected, a cold female voice came through the receiver:
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy.”
Yu Ning stared in disbelief at her phone screen. Had her mom actually hung up on her? Was she busy?
But usually, if they couldn’t answer her calls, her mom or mother would send her a message in reply. So, Yu Ning waited a bit longer.
A few minutes passed, and she still hadn’t received any message from her mom. She then tried calling her mother, only to get the same result.
Yu Ning: ?
Were they having a romantic getaway? Had she interrupted them?
[Ningning, I’ve taken your mom abroad for a trip. We’ll talk when we get back.]
[By the way, how’s the current place? Remember to buy whatever you want to eat. Your mom and I might not be able to answer calls for a while.]
[We’re boarding the plane now, no need to reply. Love you, sweetie.]
Yu Ning: “?”
[Mom? Mother?]
Why did Yu Ning feel like she’d been sold off?
Just after reading the messages, Yu Ning heard a “knock, knock” at the door.
Aside from her, the only other person in the house was Su Yi’en. There was no need to guess who it was.
When Su Yi’en opened the door, she was met with Yu Ning’s resentful gaze.
Was she still upset about earlier?
Although, Su Yi’en wasn’t sure what Yu Ning had been upset about in the first place.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Su Yi’en walked in and asked.
Yu Ning turned her head and mumbled, “My mom and mother went abroad for a trip.”
“Huh?” Su Yi’en leaned against her desk, puzzled. “Isn’t that a good thing?”
“Good how? I can’t move out now.” Didn’t her mom have any sense of caution? She was an Omega, how could she live with an Alpha?
“Is the room not nice? Is my cooking not good? Are the things I bought not to your liking?”
This series of questions from Su Yi’en left Yu Ning stunned for a moment before she answered honestly, “They’re fine.”
“Then why are you so set on moving out?”
“You’re an Alpha, we.” Yu Ning didn’t finish the sentence.
“Huh? Didn’t you also present as an Alpha? Unless.” Su Yi’en stared at her mysteriously, trailing off.
Seeing this, Yu Ning quickly denied it, “Don’t overthink it, I…”
“What am I overthinking? I meant, you’ve already presented as an Alpha, and you’re still shy?”
Yu Ning felt both embarrassed and annoyed, as if Su Yi’en could see right through her.
“Alright, help me with this problem.” Su Yi’en placed the test paper she was holding on the desk in front of Yu Ning.
Yu Ning glanced at the question and said, “This one’s pretty hard. It’ll take a while to explain.”
As soon as the words were spoken, Su Yien dashed out of the room. A moment later, Yu Ning saw her return carrying a chair, which she placed beside Yu Ning and sat down on. “It’s fine, take your time explaining. I’ll listen slowly.”
Yu Ning: “…”
Yu Ning shifted aside, squeezed by Su Yien, and was about to ask her to move over a bit when she noticed Su Yien resting her chin on her hand, tilting her head to look at her.
The words she had intended to say suddenly stuck in her throat.
Yu Ning coughed lightly, then muttered, “Look at the problem, not at me.”
“Mhm, mhm, okay.”
Su Yien toned it down a little, but as Yu Ning got into the explanation, her gaze drifted back to Yu Ning’s face.
At first, Yu Ning thought Su Yien only wanted her to explain one problem, but to her surprise, Su Yien proceeded to ask several more. Later, she even used the excuse that sitting next to Yu Ning made it easier to ask questions, settling in for good.
Yu Ning: ?
Fortunately, the desk was large enough that the two of them sitting there didn’t feel cramped.
After finishing the explanations, Su Yien didn’t say much more to Yu Ning and instead focused quietly on her own work.
Seeing this, Yu Ning didn’t dwell on it this way, she could also keep an eye on Su Yien’s studies.
From her observations over the past two days, Yu Ning realized Su Yien was quite clever. She couldn’t understand why she had been singled out for criticism by the principal before.
Su Yien watched as Yu Ning’s expression shifted through a series of subtle changes, wondering what was going through her mind.
The next morning, Yu Ning woke to the aroma of porridge. As soon as she opened her eyes, she heard Su Yien’s voice calling her from outside the door.
Heavens, this wasn’t a dream she could have breakfast as soon as she got up.
Yu Ning quickly climbed out of bed and rushed to the bathroom to wash up.
By the time she sat down at the dining table, Su Yien had already arranged the breakfast on plates.
“What’s this? Breakfast?”
Yu Ning noticed an unopened, delicate box beside her seat.
“A small cake, for a snack during break,” Su Yien replied while serving Yu Ning porridge.
“Wow,” Yu Ning’s eyes lit up at the mention of a small cake. No wonder Su Yien had asked her last night if there was any snack she wanted.
She had casually mentioned a certain cake shop, but she never expected Su Yien to make it for her this morning.
“Su Yien, you’re so kind,” Yu Ning grinned at her, her smile as bright as a crescent moon.
Su Yien chuckled softly. “Hurry up and eat breakfast. We need to head to school after this.”
Since the two of them could now study together, there was no need to wake up at six in the morning to go to school.
Yu Ning breathed a sigh of relief living here did have its perks.
No, it had many perks.
She could even enjoy safe and healthy breakfasts.
Yu Ning’s heart swelled with gratitude. Growing up, she had rarely eaten meals cooked by her family.
Even if given the chance to eat food made by her mother or mom, Yu Ning wouldn’t want to.
Two words: it was awful.
Su Yien really was a good person. From now on, she would treat Su Yien better, Yu Ning thought to herself.
When they arrived at school, Yu Ning saw Cheng Ling standing outside the classroom.
Not only Yu Ning, but even Su Yien glanced at her a couple of times.
“Yu Ning,” Cheng Ling called out to her.
“Why didn’t you take a couple of days off? Are you okay now?” Yu Ning’s feelings toward Cheng Ling were complicated. Although Cheng Ling hadn’t treated her well before, she was one of the few people who had helped her afterward.
“Hmm,” Cheng Ling pursed her lips, thought for a moment, and added, “I have something to tell you.”
“Go ahead.”
But instead of speaking directly, Cheng Ling glanced at Su Yien, who was standing beside them.
Following her gaze, Yu Ning finally noticed that Su Yien hadn’t entered the classroom yet and was standing right behind her.
Yu Ning guessed that Cheng Ling didn’t want Su Yien to overhear, so she turned to Su Yien and asked, “Aren’t you going into the classroom?”
Su Yien glanced at the two of them, let out a long “Oh,” then handed Yu Ning the small cake box she was carrying before heading into the classroom.
Yu Ning asked, “What’s going on?”
Previously, when Cheng Ling heard that Yu Ning had taken the initiative to break off her engagement with Lin Yanqing, she found it hard to believe. But now, after interacting with Yu Ning again, she realized that Yu Ning had indeed changed quite a bit.
“I’m not entirely sure, but someone followed you into the forest that day. Didn’t you notice?”
Yu Ning shook her head upon hearing this. That day, she had been chatting with Sun Yiyi the whole time and hadn’t paid any attention to who might have been behind her.
“I saw someone crouching behind a tree that day. I didn’t know what they were doing, so I went over to take a look out of curiosity…”
Yu Ning froze for a moment before replying, “Are you saying someone intended to harm me?”
Although Cheng Ling hadn’t been particularly friendly to Yu Ning before, she didn’t actually dislike her. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have followed someone who was sneaking around after Yu Ning to investigate.
“Do you know who it was?”
“Someone from your class. I don’t know their name,” Cheng Ling replied.
Yu Ning thought for a moment, glanced into the classroom, and instinctively fixed her gaze on Jiang Shuangshuang. But Cheng Ling knew Jiang Shuangshuang’s name, so it definitely wasn’t her.
Then who could it be?
“Tsk tsk, so after breaking off the engagement with Lin Yanqing, you’re getting cozy with her friend now?” A mocking voice came from behind. Without even turning around, Yu Ning knew who it was.
“It’s her.”
Yu Ning frowned. Zhang Xiaoqian might be a bit sarcastic, but was she really that malicious?
Most people would handle such matters discreetly, but Cheng Ling didn’t expect Yu Ning to confront the issue head-on. She turned around and asked Zhang Xiaoqian directly, “Did you release the snake?”
Zhang Xiaoqian had only intended to make a snide remark upon seeing Yu Ning, but she never expected Yu Ning to bring up the incident so abruptly.
“What snake? I didn’t release anything. I didn’t even go into the forest,” Zhang Xiaoqian hastily denied.
Yu Ning chuckled, “Did I mention anything about a snake in the forest?”
Zhang Xiaoqian: “…”
Just then, Wu Juan walked out of the teacher’s office and saw the three of them standing in the hallway. She asked, “Why aren’t you all in the classroom yet?”
“Will you tell her, or should I?”
Zhang Xiaoqian certainly wouldn’t admit it outright. Without witnesses or evidence, who would believe Yu Ning?
“Evidence you couldn’t have caught the snake with your bare hands, right? There must be traces left behind. Maybe a stick? Or something else? As for witnesses, you’re looking at one right now.”
Cheng Ling raised an eyebrow. Although she had come to warn Yu Ning, she hadn’t exactly volunteered to be a witness.
Yu Ning gave Cheng Ling a friendly smile, as if to say, “I bet you’re a good person.”
For some reason, Cheng Ling suddenly felt that Yu Ning didn’t dislike her at all. In fact, she seemed quite friendly much friendlier than she was toward Lin Yanqing.
“Keep in mind, it hasn’t rained these past two days, and hardly anyone goes up to Fengqi Mountain. Do you think I can find evidence or not?”
Zhang Xiaoqian inexplicably thought of the stick she had thrown on the ground, wondering if it would be discovered.
In the end, Zhang Xiaoqian gave in: “It’s not my fault. Jiang Shuangshuang made me do it.”
Jiang Shuangshuang?
Though a bit surprised, Yu Ning wasn’t too shocked, as she knew this incident should have originally happened to Jiang Shuangshuang.
“Go and tell the homeroom teacher.”
In just this short while, Yu Ning felt her phone vibrating incessantly.
After saying this to Zhang Xiaoqian, Yu Ning took out her phone and saw that all the messages were from Su Yien.
【What secret can’t I hear?】
【Are you there?】
【Your meal is gone.】
Yu Ning:
Yu Ning sighed. Why was Su Yien acting like a child?
Su Yien, who hadn’t received a reply from Yu Ning for a while, muttered to herself, “She’s actually ignoring me.”
She remembered how Yu Ning kept mentioning Cheng Ling to her later on.
She needed to find a way to get rid of this annoying person.
