A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 10
“What does Lin Yanqing mean by that?”
As soon as class ended, Sun Yiyi rushed to Yu Ning’s side and asked.
Yu Ning shook her head while organizing her textbooks. “I don’t know.”
Apart from being aware that Lin Yanqing’s attitude toward Jiang Shuangshuang was unusual, she didn’t dare to speculate further.
Seeing Yu Ning’s reaction, Sun Yiyi choked back her words, pausing for a long moment before finally saying, “You should still be careful around Jiang Shuangshuang. I have a feeling she’s quite scheming.”
“Why do you think that?” Yu Ning hesitated before asking.
“I don’t know. I haven’t interacted with her either it’s just intuition. But no matter what, it’s better to keep your distance from her.” Sun Yiyi felt a mix of frustration and helplessness seeing Yu Ning’s indifferent attitude.
“Got it.”
Just as Yu Ning finished speaking, a female voice sounded beside her.
“Yu Ning, can I talk to you?”
The speaker was none other than Jiang Shuangshuang, the very person Yu Ning and Sun Yiyi had just been discussing.
Jiang Shuangshuang stood in front of Yu Ning’s desk, looking at her expectantly.
Yu Ning tilted her head and stared at her. Just as Sun Yiyi was about to remind Yu Ning of what she had said earlier, Yu Ning asked, “What do you want to talk about?”
Jiang Shuangshuang bit her lip and glanced at Sun Yiyi beside her.
Following her gaze, Yu Ning exchanged a look with Sun Yiyi before telling Jiang Shuangshuang, “Yiyi isn’t an outsider. If you have something to say, just say it.”
Sun Yiyi even nodded in agreement, but Jiang Shuangshuang remained silent, head lowered and lips bitten, looking troubled.
“I…”
Was it because she wasn’t familiar with Sun Yiyi? Was she afraid?
“Alright then.” Yu Ning stood up from her seat and patted Sun Yiyi’s shoulder. “We’ll talk later.”
The implication was clear: she would tell Sun Yiyi what Jiang Shuangshuang said afterward.
The hallway was sparsely populated, with only a few people chatting outside.
Yu Ning followed Jiang Shuangshuang to the end of the corridor.
“I’m sorry. During physics class today, I asked Lin Yanqing for help.”
Jiang Shuangshuang stood in front of Yu Ning, head bowed, looking apologetic.
No wonder she hadn’t wanted to speak in front of Sun Yiyi and had insisted on coming to this quiet end of the hallway.
“You asked her for help?”
“Yes. She probably noticed I wasn’t paying attention in class. When she called on me, I asked if I could see her answers. But I didn’t understand them, so she answered for me.”
Yu Ning blinked, feeling that Jiang Shuangshuang’s explanation sounded odd.
“Oh, then why are you apologizing to me?”
“You’re her fiancée, and last time you reminded me to come to you if I had any problems. So I feel like I’ve let you down.”
Jiang Shuangshuang spoke with utmost sincerity, and even when mentioning Yu Ning’s previous words, she showed no trace of displeasure or any other emotion.
Yu Ning wasn’t foolish enough to ask Jiang Shuangshuang why Lin Yanqing had helped her.
Just as Jiang Shuangshuang thought Yu Ning had accepted her apology, she heard Yu Ning’s half-amused, half-skeptical voice: “But you still went to her for help, didn’t you?”
Jiang Shuangshuang stiffened, and after a long pause, she slowly uttered, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.”
Jiang Shuangshuang always had a pitiable, fragile demeanor. Although Yu Ning disliked Lin Yanqing’s special treatment of her, now that Jiang Shuangshuang had taken the initiative to explain and apologize, she couldn’t say much more. Instead, she reminded her, “Do you know why no one sat in your seat before?”
Jiang Shuangshuang looked at her and shook her head.
Yu Ning didn’t answer the question but instead said, “I hope the next time you come to me, it won’t be about this topic. Once or twice might not be intentional, but a third time would be inexcusable.”
Jiang Shuangshuang nodded, and after a moment, added, “Lin Yanqing is your fiancée. Don’t worry, I won’t like her.”
It was clear that Jiang Shuangshuang’s words, “Lin Yanqing is your fiancée,” pleased Yu Ning, as her furrowed brow relaxed noticeably.
“Can we be friends?” Seeing Yu Ning’s improved mood, Jiang Shuangshuang suddenly asked.
“We’ll see.”
Although the term “friend” was broad, Yu Ning wasn’t generous enough to befriend someone who might bring her a sense of insecurity.
After saying this, Yu Ning headed toward the classroom. Unbeknownst to her, Lin Yanqing had just stepped out of the office and happened to see the two of them walking one after the other.
Not long after Jiang Shuangshuang returned to her seat, Lin Yanqing came back carrying a stack of homework.
“What did she say to you?”
The “she” naturally referred to Yu Ning.
Jiang Shuangshuang froze for a moment, then bit her lip. “Nothing much.”
Seeing Jiang Shuangshuang’s expression, Lin Yanqing didn’t believe her. Based on her understanding of Yu Ning, it was impossible for Yu Ning not to have said something to Jiang Shuangshuang.
Under Lin Yanqing’s cold gaze, Jiang Shuangshuang finally spoke after a while: “She asked if I knew why the seat next to me was originally empty.”
Lin Yanqing didn’t respond, thinking to herself that Yu Ning had lived up to her expectations. Anyone who had even a little contact with her would be warned or threatened.
“Did someone from our class take a leave of absence last year?” Jiang Shuangshuang asked.
Hearing this, Lin Yanqing looked up at her. Jiang Shuangshuang’s eyes were wide with curiosity, unblinking.
In the days since Jiang Shuangshuang had transferred, she had only interacted with Lin Yanqing and no one else, so naturally, no one would have told her about last year’s events.
The only possibility was that Yu Ning had mentioned it to her.
Lin Yanqing had always thought Yu Ning was just somewhat willful and arrogant, but she never expected her to use such matters to threaten Jiang Shuangshuang. Suddenly, she felt even more disgusted with Yu Ning.
Jiang Shuangshuang, seemingly unaware of what was happening, stared intently at Lin Yanqing with her large eyes, waiting for an answer.
“It’s nothing.”
This was something Jiang Shuangshuang had overheard others mentioning in the hallway a few days ago. She had suddenly remembered it and asked out of curiosity, never expecting Lin Yanqing’s expression to change so dramatically.
As if to confirm Lin Yanqing’s suspicions, during the first self-study class in the afternoon, the homeroom teacher walked into the classroom, circled around twice, and announced, “I’m going to rearrange some seats.”
“Wang Hui and Lan Xi, switch.”
“Cheng Leyao and Li Li, switch.”
“Jiang Shuangshuang and Li Li, switch.”
Yu Ning: “…”
When she first heard the teacher’s final instruction to switch, Yu Ning was quite pleased. But when she realized that Jiang Shuangshuang and Li Li were swapping, meaning Jiang Shuangshuang would become her deskmate, her happiness instantly vanished.
It wasn’t that she had any prejudice against Jiang Shuangshuang, but something about it felt strange.
As Yu Ning and Jiang Shuangshuang left the classroom, Sun Yiyi hatched a plan in her mind.
Since the point of the party was to have fun, why not make her party even more lively?
Lin Yanqing had issues with Su Yien, but what did that have to do with Sun Yiyi?
So, during the break, Sun Yiyi handed Su Yien an invitation, asking her to attend her birthday party on Saturday.
She and Yu Ning had grown up together, and her parents cared about Yu Ning even more than they cared about her. Lin Yanqing definitely couldn’t be left out if Lin Yanqing didn’t go, her parents would surely speculate, and she’d have to spend time explaining things to them. Besides, Lin Yanqing’s family and hers were quite familiar, so they wouldn’t want to cause any awkwardness.
So Lin Yanqing had to be there.
Now, it was Su Yien’s turn.
She had already told Su Yien that Yu Ning would definitely be there. Whether Su Yien would come or not was up to her. Whatever her intentions might be, getting her to show up was what mattered.
