A Fatal Attraction from Lawyer A - Chapter 90
After finding out that his reproductive cavity had been removed, Gu Yuxi wasn’t particularly surprised, nor did he feel regret. The birth of Luo Songran had already completely filled the void of his inability to be an Omega.
Instead, he felt incredibly lucky. He had reclaimed his life.
Luo Panzhi, however, was devastated. He cried with a crushing loss of control—the kind of breakdown that neither his brother Zuogu nor his sister Xiaoyu could soothe or stop.
At that moment, Gu Yuxi realized that Luo Panzhi’s love for him was truly empathetic. Because Gu was in pain, Luo felt it even more deeply. Gu didn’t cry, so Luo shed all the tears for him.
Since that day, Luo Panzhi had never let Gu out of his sight. No matter what Gu did, Luo followed; no matter what Gu said, Luo responded instantly. He didn’t leave Gu’s side for a single step during the entire hospital stay. Even after the baby left the incubator, Luo Panzhi took care of him personally, barely letting anyone else touch him.
Gu spent a month and a half at the postpartum care center. He spent the first two weeks entirely in bed. It wasn’t until he had fully recovered that he could walk around; the issue wasn’t the pain of the wound, but the extreme weakness from massive blood loss. He was so unsteady that Luo Panzhi had to carry him even to the restroom.
As for eating, he had no appetite at all.
On their last day at the center, the atmosphere in the room was somewhat tense. The cause of the tension? Gu Yuxi refused to eat.
“Be a good boy and eat.”
Beside the bed, Luo Panzhi stared at him sternly while holding a bowl. Gu Yuxi frowned at the so-called “postpartum meal” inside. “I really don’t want to eat.”
He utterly detested these specialized meals. No matter how much they were praised for being nutritionally balanced, he couldn’t stand them. It was strange; having grown up in poverty, one would think he’d be easy to please, yet as an adult, he had become an incredibly picky eater.
“Gu Yuxi, I can give in to you on anything else, but today, you must finish this meal. Don’t make me angry,” Luo Panzhi said expressionlessly, bringing the spoon to Gu’s lips.
“I don’t like this,” Gu Yuxi said, pointing at the fish in the bowl.
“There are no bones. I picked them all out for you.”
“I don’t like fish.” Gu Yuxi pushed the bowl away with the back of his hand, making his refusal clear.
Seeing him being picky again, Luo Panzhi’s temper flared. He dropped the spoon into the bowl with a sharp clink, took a deep breath, and fought to restrain himself.
Gu Yuxi silently pulled his hand back. Seeing that Luo was truly angry, he lowered his gaze and reached out to tug on Luo’s dress shirt. “Fine… I’ll eat.”
His voice was thick with reluctant grievance.
Luo Panzhi looked at him silently. Looking at Gu’s face, which was significantly thinner than it had been two months ago, he suppressed his anger and spoke as gently as possible. “Gu Yuxi, do you know how much weight you’ve lost? I couldn’t even lift you before.”
When Gu had fainted from a fever at the group headquarters months ago, Luo had struggled to carry him, thinking how heavy the man was. Now, he could lift him with ease. It was a terrifying difference.
Gu Yuxi looked up, meeting Luo’s dark, frustrated eyes. His eyelashes trembled as he gave the shirt another small tug. “I’ll eat more once I’m discharged. Then I’ll go to the gym. I’ll recover quickly.”
Luo Panzhi glanced at the hand tugging his clothes. “Hand back. Don’t act spoiled.”
“Is it not working?” Gu Yuxi leaned forward and whispered.
The distance between them shrank until their lips were barely a finger’s width apart, close enough to feel each other’s breath. Luo Panzhi stoically looked away, appearing unmoved. “It’s not working.”
The next second, Gu Yuxi kissed him.
“How about now?” Gu turned Luo’s face back to his own and kissed him again, looking him in the eyes. “I promise I won’t be picky anymore. I’ll eat whatever you give me. Don’t be mad, okay?”
Luo Panzhi had lost count of how many times they had argued over this during the month. Gu thought he hadn’t done anything truly “evil”—just being a bit picky. He had always been a picky eater.
“You’ve told me that a thousand times. Sit up straight,” Luo Panzhi said coolly, pulling Gu off his chest and leaning him back against the pillows.
Gu Yuxi felt the coldness in his tone and thought, He’s really angry this time. “Panpan, I promise I’ll gain it back. I’ll start working out in a while. With my years of experience, body sculpting isn’t hard for me.”
“No strenuous exercise for three months after surgery.”
“Then I’ll wait three months.”
“If you don’t take care of your body now and eat properly, do you really think you can return to your original physical condition?” Luo Panzhi set the bowl down and turned his back to Gu to compose himself.
Gu Yuxi stared at Luo’s back, tilting his head to try and see his face, only to hear a muffled sob.
…Damn. He had made Luo Panzhi cry again.
He reached out to touch Luo’s shoulder, trying to turn him around. “Panpan, are you crying?”
“No.”
Gu felt a wave of guilt. That voice clearly belonged to someone crying. He slid over to Luo’s side, leaning down to peer at him. “Baby, did I make you cry again?”
He saw Luo’s red-rimmed eyes and a face full of frustration and heartbreak. Gu instantly regretted his behavior. He picked up the remaining fish congee and began eating it dutifully.
Luo Panzhi watched out of the corner of his eye as the man finished the bowl. He didn’t speak, but his gaze lingered on Gu’s profile. Before, this face was perfectly angular and handsome; now, it was gaunt.
His gaze drifted down to Gu’s pajamas. They were the same size they always bought, but now they hung loosely on him. Gu hadn’t gained much weight during the pregnancy, and after two hemorrhages, he had withered. Even the ring on his ring finger was too loose to wear; Luo had to put it on a chain around his neck.
Luo Panzhi felt as though Gu had been suffering for him ever since they met. Especially with the birth. He still hadn’t gotten over the trauma.
The second hemorrhage resulted in the hysterectomy. Gu was now biologically a “pure” Alpha again, but it had left a psychological scar on Luo Panzhi. He felt it was all his fault. That was why he was so desperate for Gu to eat and sleep well; he was terrified Gu would fall ill again.
“Baby, I finished,” Gu Yuxi said, holding up the empty bowl.
“What, do you want a gold star?” Luo Panzhi looked at him gloomily.
Gu didn’t need a reward like a toddler, he just didn’t want Luo to be sad. “I finished it, so stop crying, okay?”
“I wasn’t crying.” Luo Panzhi took the bowl and began tidying the table. “From now on, it’s always like this. You eat what I give you. If you dare to be picky, I’ll—”
“You’ll cry?” Gu finished the sentence for him.
Luo Panzhi: “…”
Gu Yuxi gave an innocent smile. “Alright, alright. I’ll eat whatever you make. No more being picky.”
“That’s better.” Luo Panzhi finished cleaning and washed his hands. He returned to the bedside and held out his arms. “Need to use the restroom?”
Gu shook his head and looked at him expectantly. “I want to bathe. Can I?”
It was his last day of “sitting the month.” His only wish was to take a proper bath before going home.
“You can.”
Gu’s eyes lit up.
“I’ll wash you.”
The bathroom was filled with warm steam. Gu Yuxi stood under the showerhead with his eyes closed, letting Luo Panzhi wash his hair. He felt the fingers and suds moving through his hair, the pads of Luo’s fingers gently wiping foam from his eyelids.
“Mr. Luo, you’re very professional at washing hair.”
Luo Panzhi chuckled, his eyes full of doting affection. “Yes, I’m always professional when serving my leader. Is the pressure okay, Leader?”
“Mhm, not bad. The back of my head is a bit itchy.” Gu lowered his head.
As the suds slid down Gu’s neck, Luo Panzhi caught a glimpse of the pale pink gland at the nape of Gu’s neck. It was a faint mark, barely visible unless one looked closely, but because Gu had been indoors for so long, his skin had become even paler, making the mark stand out.
This was now the only proof that Gu Yuxi had ever been an Omega.
Because the reproductive cavity was gone, Gu Yuxi was now biologically a complete Alpha. And the “Permanent Mark” they once shared—the bond that linked their souls—had vanished with the surgery. Luo Panzhi could no longer smell his own scent on Gu.
Even if their compatibility remained 100% in the database, the physical tether was gone.
When Luo’s fingers brushed the back of his neck, Gu’s spine shivered. He opened his eyes to see Luo’s deep, complicated gaze. “…What is it?”
“Baby… you don’t smell like me anymore.”
Gu Yuxi froze. He saw the moisture in Luo’s eyes, the intense sadness and sense of loss in his voice. He reached up to cup Luo’s face, ignoring the soap on his own head, and pressed his forehead against Luo’s.
“It’s okay,” Gu whispered. “I love you.”
Without the permanent mark, they were technically a pair of Alphas who should naturally repel each other according to their genes.
Gu would be okay; he had been using Luo’s pheromones and neutralizers for ten years. Luo’s scent was in his blood. Luo’s presence would always soothe him.
But Luo Panzhi was grieving. Before, if Luo was in a “rut” (Alpha heat), he didn’t need to do much—just being close to Gu would provide the necessary comfort. But now, the mark was gone. To Luo, it felt like Gu was standing right in front of him, yet he couldn’t “possess” him in the same way. It was the pain of having had something and then losing it.
For an Alpha, marking a beloved Omega isn’t about conquest; it’s about pouring one’s soul into them, telling the world this person is mine, declaring sovereignty and finding security.
Luo Panzhi felt profoundly insecure. He turned off the water. Warm droplets clung to his hair and face, hiding the tears that mixed with them.
“I… I know,” he choked out.
Gu Yuxi couldn’t stand seeing him so down. Without a word, he kissed him.
Under the cooling dampness, they pressed their chests together and embraced. They felt each other’s strong heartbeats, yet the sound of water dripping on the tiles made them feel fragile.
They had kissed a thousand times, and it was always joyful. Except for this time. It was heartbreaking.
“Luo Panzhi.” Gu turned the water off completely and brushed the wet hair from Luo’s forehead, revealing his handsome features. “Look at me.”
“Mhm,” Luo responded.
“Let me ask you: Do you like Omegas, or do you like me?”
“I love you.”
“And are you sad now because the mark is gone?”
“Yes… a little.”
“If I hadn’t differentiated into an Omega-like state and was just a regular Alpha, would you be sad that you couldn’t mark me?”
Luo Panzhi buried his face in Gu’s neck and sobbed. “No. Because the person I like is you.”
“So you’re just sad because you did leave a mark, and now my body doesn’t have your scent anymore, right?”
“Mhm…” Luo couldn’t hold it back. “Without my scent on you, I feel unsettled. I’m afraid someone will take you away.”
Gu Yuxi gave him a playful tap on the head. Luo looked at him, eyes wide and tearful.
Gu took Luo’s hand and placed it on the surgical scar on his abdomen. “Luo Panzhi, this scar is the evidence that you were once inside me. Even if the scent is gone, nothing can erase the proof of what we shared.”
Luo Panzhi was stunned. The words were blunt, but the logic was sound.
“So, no more being sad,” Gu said softly, guiding Luo’s hand further down. “We aren’t like ordinary Alphas. Our compatibility is high enough to support anything we want to do. If you feel insecure… I’ll let you hurt me a little (in bed).”
Those words instantly chased away Luo Panzhi’s gloom. He felt like he was floating on air.
That’s right. They weren’t ordinary. They were the first recorded case of a 100% Alpha-Alpha compatibility (even if it was recorded when Gu’s pheromones were at Omega levels). It didn’t stop them from being close.
“Husband.”
Luo Panzhi’s heart blossomed at the address. He looked into Gu’s smiling eyes, grabbed a towel, and wrapped it around him. “Yes?”
“You promised that after the baby was born, you’d do whatever I wanted,” Gu said, pulling the towel away and stepping closer. “Can we cash that in now?”
