- Chapter 29 - Unparalleled Attraction
The students who had collected their supplies formed a long line, waiting to undergo scanning before entering the spacecraft.
The moment Yu Mianfeng stepped inside the spacecraft, he was stopped by a monitor at the main gate.
“Commander Liao wants you to find him in the main cabin,” the monitor explained.
The path ahead was smooth and unobstructed; many of the gates that should have been locked were opened for him, it seemed the commanding officer had issued orders in advance.
Arriving at the main cabin, Yu Mianfeng knocked on the door, and the person inside immediately commanded in a low voice: “Enter.”
Pushing open the alloy door, Yu Mianfeng immediately spotted the man sitting on the sofa, dressed in a crisp military uniform.
In front of Liao Xu lay a chessboard, his brow furrowed, a white chess piece pinched between his fingers as he seemed to be contemplating where it should be moved.
“Good day, Commander.” Yu Mianfeng saluted him sharply.
Liao Xu finally raised his eyes slowly to look at him.
Yu Mianfeng was dressed in a neat combat suit, with a small bag buckled at his waist containing his fixed quota of supplies. When his belt was tightened and his back was straight, the curve of his buttocks behind him became clearly, slightly prominent; he had no idea how many Alphas had seen it along the way.
Liao Xu’s voice was somewhat subtle: “Come over and sit.”
There was a wooden chair opposite the long sofa. Yu Mianfeng sat on it, legs bent and straightened, his hands resting on his knees. His serious and earnest demeanor made Liao Xu chuckle.
“Relax. This isn’t a conversation between a superior and a subordinate.”
Liao Xu pushed the white chess piece in his hand forward one square and said slowly.
Yu Mianfeng replied: “Yes.”
After saying this, he lowered his eyes, avoiding the other party’s gaze, his focus inadvertently landing on the chessboard in front of him.
…Just one glance was enough to see that the pieces on the black-and-white board were placed completely at random, and even the move Liao Xu had just made did not conform to the rules.
Liao Xu clearly didn’t realize that the chaotic mess of things he had impulsively asked his subordinate to bring along for his own convenience had been completely seen through.
Relying on the fact that Yu Mianfeng was looking down at the chessboard, his gaze swept over Yu Mianfeng’s tied-up black hair, brushed over his pale pink lips, and finally landed on the table in front of him, playing with the view of the boy’s knuckle-defined hands resting on his legs beneath the transparent glass table.
Usually, there was no such treatment; if he got even a few steps closer, Yu Mianfeng would avoid him.
Liao Xu had admired him enough. He shifted from a posture of sitting with his legs wide apart to crossing his legs, and out of the blue, he spoke: “Do you know why I called you here?”
“I don’t,” Yu Mianfeng replied truthfully. When saying this, his tone was cold, possessing the attitude of treating a superior in a strictly professional manner.
“…Not long after I received this mission, the Marshal suddenly found me and instructed me not to abuse my power or make things difficult for my subordinates he almost named you specifically. He cares about you very much. Are you two on good terms?”
Before Yu Mianfeng could answer, Liao Xu threw out another question: “Do you think I would intentionally make things difficult for you?”
This was a dangerous topic, conflicts between superiors.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t know if the relationship between Liao Xu and Yuan Hechu was good or bad, but these words were too much like sarcasm.
Perhaps their relationship is terrible.
Yu Mianfeng had to ponder his response: “In the Academy, we have a superior-subordinate relationship, just like me and Commander Liao.”
It was a very compromising answer; Liao Xu didn’t ask anything else.
His hand pressed against the cigarette case in his pocket, but recalling that Yu Mianfeng didn’t like the smell of smoke, he gave up.
“Go back,” Liao Xu said in a deep voice: “Go back via the secret passage. There is someone outside the door who will lead you.”
Yu Mianfeng bade him farewell, his footsteps light as he left.
The door closed again. Liao Xu looked at the chessboard covered with pieces in front of him and, feeling annoyed, pushed them into a mess.
He lit a cigarette and took a deep drag, finally able to put down his crossed leg, slowly pondering something.
In fact, the task of leading the team was originally issued by the military to one of Liao Xu’s subordinates, but it was snatched away by Liao Xu after he found out about it.
He took advantage of the recent stability in the Capital Star, finished handling all the matters on his hands, and used up all the annual leave he had accumulated over the past several years.
His friends were surprised that he would go out of his way to find trouble for himself during his vacation, but upon learning who the students he would be leading were, they suddenly changed their expressions. Fearing that he would become irritated and seek deliberate revenge, they all hurried over to dissuade him.
Liao Xu had a violent temper—something almost everyone in the military’s upper echelons knew. When the news of his proposal to Yu Mianfeng at his coming-of-age ceremony reached the military, many were afraid that after being rejected, he would lose his temper and beat the Yu family’s child.
Liao Xu was tough-skinned, having crawled and climbed through the frontier for many years; he could kill an alien with three punches.
Biting on the cigarette butt, Liao Xu suddenly remembered what his friends had urged him before he left to the effect of telling him not to settle personal scores.
Liao Xu scoffed. How could I actually lay a hand on this young master… but getting handsy with him is a different story.
…
Inside the preparation room, the students who had scanned in first were picking chairs in good spots. The door was wide open, and people kept coming in; those who arrived later could only sit on the floor.
When Yu Mianfeng walked in, the room was almost full. He had wanted to find any spot on the ground to sit when an Alpha he knew, also a noble, suddenly stood up from his chair and gave him his seat.
“No need,” Yu Mianfeng declined, heading to a corner to lean against the wall.
Unexpectedly, that Alpha with the seat also came over, sitting cross-legged beside him with an obsequious attitude.
“Yu-shao was clearly ahead of me in line just now, why did you arrive later than me?” the Alpha asked.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t want to be misunderstood as having an affair with a superior, so he recalled what was in the direction he had returned from.
“Went to the restroom.”
Yu Mianfeng lied without changing his expression.
The public restrooms on a military spacecraft made no distinction between ABO genders; for ease of management, there were no stalls. The soldiers were all completely open with one another. It was a common occurrence to meet someone you knew in the restroom and smile as you stood up next to them to compare sizes.
The Alpha raised an eyebrow, smiled, and his tone held a hint of regret: “That’s a real shame… movement isn’t allowed after the spacecraft takes off; I had wanted to go too. If I had known, I would have gone with Yu-shao.”
Seeing that Yu Mianfeng had no interest in further conversation, he pondered and changed the topic to one he thought Yu Mianfeng would be interested in: “I’m from the Middle Academy. A few days ago, someone from our academy saw your fiancé and asked about your recent status, and who would have thought your fiancé would suddenly start fighting with that person! You guys didn’t have a falling out, did you?”
Yu Mianfeng hadn’t wanted to pay attention to him anymore, but out of consideration for the protagonist shou’s face, he replied: “No.”
The Alpha said “Oh” and, knowing better, stopped talking.
After the broadcast authorized parachuting, the students swarmed out like a hive, all wanting to get a step ahead of the others.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t care; he waited until there were fewer people before jumping down. Upon landing, he efficiently harvested the points of a few people who had tried to ambush him.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t care about his ranking in this league and chose not to take the initiative to attack, yet he still harvested plenty of points along the way.
The first day of the league passed safely.
At night, Yu Mianfeng found a cave and slept.
On the second day, the number of people encountered gradually decreased, and their strength became more formidable.
Yu Mianfeng went through the motions, eliminating a few people, and his points were maintained in the top ranks.
The third day, the final day of the league.
The time Yu Mianfeng had agreed upon with Yuan Hechu.
The other party would help him “fake his death.”
Yu Mianfeng walked aimlessly; the scorching sun was in the sky, and the road was shaded by trees, but he hadn’t encountered anyone.
Did I deviate from the center area? Yu Mianfeng wondered.
But he was certain that the positioning chip in the point bracelet on his wrist would let Yuan Hechu know his location.
Passing through the dense forest, he could vaguely see a few houses in the distance. They looked clean and appeared inhabited, but there wasn’t a whisper of sound; it was deathly quiet.
The league rules did not allow contestants to approach residential areas; any use of non-contestants was considered a violation, resulting in a serious demerit and disqualification from the league.
Yu Mianfeng intended to take a detour.
He was just about to lift his leg to leave when he suddenly turned around, drew his gun, and fired at the space behind him.
Yu Mianfeng only just perceived that, at some point, a living thing had been standing behind him!
Yu Mianfeng’s mental power was extremely strong, yet he hadn’t detected the presence of this thing.
If the other party had been sent by Yuan Hechu, they would have signaled him from a distance first; it was impossible to have approached him silently from behind.
It was the first time in Yu Mianfeng’s life that he had felt his hair stand on end. While firing continuously, he observed the tall figure before him.
The face resembled a human’s, with long, silver-white hair extraordinarily handsome, featuring compound eyes, and highly alien.
Smooth carapace, a torso a head taller than a human’s, and huge, transparent wings growing from its back…
The Zerg, nearly extinct in the modern era and seen only in books.
The once-thriving overlords of the galaxy, the most powerful existence among the alien races but after their Zerg Queen died, the race began to perish. Within less than a hundred years, they had vanished without a trace, disappearing from the star annals and never being recorded again.
Zerg… why would they appear here?
Yu Mianfeng didn’t know if it had any intention of attacking him, or why it had been observing him from behind for so long… but he was certain that his earlier act of aggression must have provoked the other party.
There was no retreat now.
The shots Yu Mianfeng fired had all hit the Zerg’s torso, but the hard carapace had blocked the bullets.
The Zerg lowered its head, as if puzzled, looking at the abdominal armor on its chest.
Seizing the opportunity, Yu Mianfeng decisively aimed for the creature’s skull and fired in an instant. For any creature, the head was a vital area.
In Yu Mianfeng’s line of sight, the Zerg lifted its head with incredible speed and glanced at him.
Yu Mianfeng actually detected a look of surprise in its two pairs of dilated eyes.
The Zerg’s figure moved, dodging.
This shot missed.
Its speed was unbelievably fast; in the next instant, it had arrived before Yu Mianfeng.
Yu Mianfeng stared at the enlarged face before him. The Zerg had closed one pair of its eyes; seen from such a close distance, one couldn’t even detect the existence of compound eyes.
This time, its face was almost no different from a human’s.
The Zerg easily restrained Yu Mianfeng’s attempt to continue pulling the trigger.
The gun was tossed to the ground by it.
Yu Mianfeng’s hands were clamped together, his body pressed against the tree trunk.
His hands were firmly bound; amid Yu Mianfeng’s violent struggle, this Zerg gradually shed that highly insectoid appearance, stowing away its wings the hard carapace was gone, and this time, it looked like a real human a strong adult male, only naked, without any clothes.
It looked at Yu Mianfeng’s face, its scarlet eyes unmoving, and pondered on the spot for a while.
Suddenly, taking it off guard, Yu Mianfeng exerted his strength, lunging forward, attempting to use the hidden blade tied to his elbow to slash the other’s throat.
The tip of the blade was inches away, about to cut through the throat. Before the blade could fall, the male Zerg grasped the blade with its other hand.
Blood gushed out.
As if it couldn’t feel pain, its expression didn’t change a bit. It pulled out the tied bayonet with its bare hand, broke the blade, and tossed it away.
The male Zerg placed its blood-stained palm before Yu Mianfeng’s eyes, signaling him to look there.
Armor plates grew from its blood-drenched hand; the sharp limbs of the Zerg sliced through Yu Mianfeng’s clothing with ease, leaving his skin exposed to the air.
Yu Mianfeng couldn’t help but feel a sense of crisis rising: “…What are you doing?”
He hadn’t intended to get a response.
Who could have known that the Zerg before him would actually open its mouth and speak in human language to answer him.
“Mating.”
