- Chapter 28 - Jealous Enough to Go Almost Insane...
Human frontier, N Star System, Noor Star.
This place was located on the borderline between human and alien territories desolate and sparsely populated. Other than the stationed troops, the only people who stayed here were the descendants of a few criminals whose ancestors had been exiled to this place.
Almost no ordinary people were willing to come here.
The central government provided extra benefits to the soldiers stationed at the frontier, and there were hefty pensions in case of death in battle. Many people chose to join the army simply to support their families and earn a living.
Fortunately, Noor Star was one of the better frontier stars; it was not located on the main battlefield, and the number of times they had actually fought could be counted on one hand. It could be called the safest frontier star.
Stationed here, life was dry and boring, consisting more of unscheduled drills than actual war. Many soldiers never saw a single alien from the moment they enlisted until the end of their service when they returned home.
The number of troops stationed on Noor Star was not large, the environment was relatively harsh but not fatal, and the human population was scarce. Considering all these factors, the Academy decided to drop the students here for this year’s league.
This news was classified as top secret, prepared and communicated layer by layer; even until the moment they stepped onto the starship, the students still didn’t know where they were headed.
There were three large-scale jump tracks between Capital Star and Noor Star, and all students were ordered to enter hibernation pods. Time lost its meaning in this slumber.
When he opened his eyes again, Yu Mianfeng woke up from the pod. By this time, the starship had finished its jumps and was approaching its final destination.
Through the hibernation fluid and the glass, he could see a vague human silhouette outside.
Pushing open the casing of the hibernation pod, Yu Mianfeng narrowed his eyes and sat up. Just as he was about to wipe the remaining liquid off his face with the back of his hand, a tissue was suddenly handed to him.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t pay attention, lifting his head to identify the face of the other person.
Lu Wengang was propping himself up against the pod door with one hand, smiling at him.
It happened to be the time for the broadcast overhead to order everyone to head to the central cabin hall. Yu Mianfeng withdrew his gaze, rejected Lu Wengang’s attempt to help him up, and rose nimbly.
Lu Wengang withdrew his hand with some regret.
“Why were you standing next to my hibernation pod the whole time?” On the way, Yu Mianfeng asked abruptly.
“…I’ve never seen Yu-ge’s sleeping face before, so I wanted to see it.”
An unrelated answer.
Yu Mianfeng remained noncommittal, his attitude cold: “You came to find me, because of your brother?”
He was probing Lu Wengang’s reaction.
Hearing this, Lu Wengang’s tone became playful instead: “No… I wanted to see you for my own sake.”
A strange tone; Yu Mianfeng didn’t understand his intentions.
Pulling open the door to the small cabin, he could finally see others. They were huddled in groups of three or five in the corridor, whispering as they walked.
Yu Mianfeng approached. Before he could even open his mouth, those people simultaneously stopped talking in a strange unison, their footsteps frozen in place.
Most of the students at the Capital Academy were Alphas, with only a scattering of Betas. The students capable of entering such a semi-military academy had to be far above average in every respect.
The boys in front of him were all the tall, big-framed type, looking like Alphas, each lowering their eyes, not daring to look him in the eye, yet unable to refrain from stealing glances.
Yu Mianfeng’s black hair was messily scattered beside his ears, and he always carried an air of disdain when looking at people. This was strange; although he had almost no expression on his face, people always made a habit of projecting things onto him through their own fantasies.
With just one look, those Alphas lowered their heads again.
There was only one exception. Nervously swallowing his saliva, he shouted loudly at Yu Mianfeng: “Good morning, Xuezhang (senior).”
Yu Mianfeng recognized the boy’s face a decent appearance; it was the third-place winner who had asked him for an autograph.
A few days later, the other boy wasn’t as shy as he had been at their first meeting and seemed much bolder.
“Mhm.” Yu Mianfeng replied simply.
He pondered for a moment and added: “You fought well in the match. Good luck in the league.”
He was completely unaware that all the Alphas beside him were, at this moment, jealous enough to go almost insane.
Beside him, Lu Wengang, who had been set aside for a long time, was consumed by rage and laughed sinisterly.
He had thought that getting rid of Jiang Henggu would be enough, but who would have known that these eyesores would emerge one after another…
The few of them headed toward the central cabin hall together to assemble.
After everyone was gathered, the officers gave them a brief introduction to the planet’s information. The rules were that everyone should carry two meals’ worth of rations and simple supplies. All people were divided into eight groups, each group taking a large transport craft, and the students decided for themselves when to parachute during the journey.
Yu Mianfeng’s serial number was D006, and he was assigned to the fourth group; there was no one he recognized, only unfamiliar faces.
This wasn’t an official lineup, and the leading officer hadn’t arrived yet. He stood toward the front, and some Alphas behind him began to discuss him in hushed tones, believing they were being subtle.
“…Never seen him before.”
“…The Yu family’s…”
“…Better than imagined…”
While his mind was wandering, Yu Mianfeng heard his own name.
“What are they chatting about regarding me? The evil villain?” Yu Mianfeng, bored, asked the System.
[…Regarding your engagement.]
“Oh.” Yu Mianfeng instantly lost interest.
The System was irritable and distracted. In fact, the original words were much more vulgar, and it didn’t want to tell Yu Mianfeng.
Those Alphas were sizing up Yu Mianfeng’s body with predatory gazes, secretly debating about his physique in bed, whether Yu Mianfeng would be the one on top of an Omega… or if an Omega would be on top of him.
The Alphas huddling together were not students from the Capital Academy, otherwise, they wouldn’t have said such things. After witnessing it with their own eyes, no one would ever question Yu Mianfeng’s strength again.
Many Alphas held a sort of contemptuous attitude toward Betas, believing that Betas were inferior to Alphas in every aspect, and even inferior to Omegas, as they couldn’t please Alphas as well as Omegas could; at most, they could only be treated as lovers for sexual gratification… This line of thought was common during the Empire era. Now that the Federation had been established for so long, it still hadn’t managed to eliminate the deep-rooted ideas of certain people.
Yu Mianfeng ignored them, and those dark, hushed discussions were forced to come to an abrupt end before long.
The leading officer strode forward. Before he even arrived, he fired a blank shot, shocking everyone into silence.
“I’ll kick you off the ship one by one myself,” the officer barked.
The students didn’t dare to make any other movements; for a time, the only sound in the cabin was the officer’s boot heels striking the floor.
Yu Mianfeng was standing in the first row in a military posture, chest puffed out and chin held high as he looked into the distance. The sound of those footsteps gradually drew closer to him.
Before long, the officer arrived before him, stopping right in front of Yu Mianfeng.
The two made eye contact. It was a face Yu Mianfeng knew very well.
Yu Mianfeng was slightly surprised.
At Yu Mianfeng’s coming-of-age ceremony a few months ago, they had met; the other party had once tried to woo him and his chest was covered in medals representing glorious military achievements, leaving him with a deep impression.
He knew the man in front of him was one of the military officers with high status in the commoner faction. Given this man’s rank, he shouldn’t have been doing something as trivial as leading a team.
Yu Mianfeng pondered; it seemed the Academy still placed great importance on the safety of this batch of students. It might be very difficult for him to slip away when the time came.
I wonder how Yuan Hechu will arrange things.
The two stared at each other for a long time. Seeing that he had no reaction, the man cast a cold glance at him, his gaze falling upon his face as if it were tangible.
Yu Mianfeng remained calm, slightly shifting his gaze away, no longer meeting his eyes. His waist and back were straight, his posture standard enough to go and demonstrate to new recruits.
A moment later, the man said in a cold voice: “Everyone, go collect your supplies according to your serial numbers. Assemble in five minutes.”
