- Chapter 11 - The Domineering Beta (Part 11 - Edited) — Aphrodisiac Medication…
Chen Xiulan naturally knew exactly which incident he was referring to the shooting case that was still used as a textbook example for law students to this day. He had no desire to be turned into a sieve himself.
The man slowly raised both hands in a helpless gesture of surrender.
“Alright, alright. I actually came to find you for something else…”
With a sigh, Chen Xiulan reached his hand back into his opposite sleeve. Like a magician performing a trick, he produced an invitation card adorned with elegant gold foil stamping.
Yu Mianfeng narrowed his eyes at him.
The invitation was extended right in front of the barrel of his gun.
Out of nowhere, the voice in his mind spoke up: 【You have a major mission at this banquet tonight. 】
That was precisely where the issue lay.
Tonight was supposed to be the plot point where the villain attends the Chen family banquet and is boldly courted by a Chen family Omega.
Once the rumors reached the ears of the main lead and the protagonist, the protagonist would loathe the villain even more, while the main lead would burn with rage, furious that his beloved was being snatched away by such a playboy.
Looking at the invitation, Yu Mianfeng pondered silently.
For him, there was an additional task.
At this banquet, a certain aristocratic lord who treated human life like grass was the current assassination target of the Commoner Faction. This old-money noble was steeped in wickedness and had brutally murdered over a dozen commoner Betas. Even among the nobility, he was viewed as a despicable existence, but due to deep-seated historical issues, no one had punished him.
Tonight, the assassins from the Commoner Faction were going to make their move and Yu Mianfeng had to provide cover for them.
He made no movement, showing neither rejection nor acceptance. He merely looked as though he was weighing whether or not he should go, while simultaneously putting his firearm away.
The smile on Chen Xiulan’s face grew even broader.
The Chen family banquet was teeming with guests, and there was no shortage of faces familiar to Yu Mianfeng.
He sat alone in a corner, sipping through a straw, completely ignoring the astounded gazes falling upon him from the crowd.
Evidently, his appearance had caught everyone off guard.
No one expected him to show up here. Everyone held their breath, fixing their eyes on his famously striking face.
With his black hair falling beside his ears and his pale, handsome features, the arrogant, domineering aura completely vanished when he lowered his eyes. Instead, he looked like a well-behaved student from a proper family.
Someone holding a wine glass tentatively tried to approach. Yu Mianfeng originally intended to ignore the person, but his gaze swept past Chen Xiulan beside him.
Chen Xiulan simply sat there, raising his glass in a casual, perfunctory manner, even though it was filled with fruit wine.
His glass lightly clinked against the visitor’s. Flattered by the unexpected favor, the guest’s steps faltered. Thanking him repeatedly, the person staggered away.
Chen Xiulan let out a sigh.
Just a moment ago, he had tried to clink glasses, only to be completely ignored by Yu Mianfeng.
Yu Mianfeng’s current action was clearly a deliberate demonstration meant for him to see.
He holds such a grudge, remembering that past incident all the way until now.
Chen Xiulan did indeed feel vexed that he shouldn’t have been caught by him back then. Helplessly, he drained the wine in his own glass.
That hurried first encounter had actually left such a terrible impression.
Watching the others flocking over, Chen Xiulan’s face remained expressionless. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking, but he suddenly laughed out loud.
Anyone who subsequently attempted to approach Yu Mianfeng for a toast was quietly and tactfully blocked by Chen Xiulan.
Knowing that Yu Mianfeng detested noise, Chen Xiulan had deliberately carved out a peaceful sanctuary in this corner. However, the prying eyes darting in from all directions still couldn’t be completely shut out.
Turning a blind eye to these stares, Yu Mianfeng focused on savoring the fruit wine in his hand.
It possessed a subtle sweetness, and he found that it unexpectedly suited his palate.
This glass was something Chen Xiulan had specifically ordered someone to fetch for him.
Chen Xiulan knew his tastes well.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t view this as a good thing.
【This man is absolutely the type to spike a drink. Although there’s nothing in this glass, there’s no guarantee for the future when I’m not around】 The man in his head complained.
“Are you leaving?”
Yu Mianfeng was interested in a completely different matter.
【Well, actually, I have a premonition that we are probably going to be separated for a period of time TT】
“Goodbye,” Yu Mianfeng replied decisively.
【…I hasn’t even left yet.】
The youth remained silent, but a rare trace of amusement surfaced on that cold face.
He looked around the room, eventually turning his gaze back to Chen Xiulan.
Their eyes locked. Caught red-handed in his staring, Chen Xiulan simply smiled quite openly: “What are your orders, Young Master Yu?”
Yu Mianfeng rested his chin on his hand.
The fruit wine didn’t taste heavily of alcohol, yet it was highly intoxicating. His pale complexion had already been touched by a flush of warmth, looking somewhat tipsy. When he lifted his eyelids to look over, his blue eyes carried a watery, drowsy sheen from yawning. That icy, distant aura that kept people a thousand miles away softened quite a bit.
Seeing the unattainable flower assume such a state made Chen Xiulan’s heart itch, and his voice unconsciously softened.
Fixing his dark, intense gaze on the youth, Chen Xiulan said softly, “Is there anything you would like to command of me?”
“Bark like a dog a couple of times.”
Yu Mianfeng narrowed his eyes. It was unclear if he was mistaking him for someone else as he issued the order.
The air froze for a fraction of a second. Chen Xiulan’s expression turned subtle. Heaven knew what crossed his mind, but he appeared to be in an exceptionally good mood. Far from being angered by such an insult, a flicker of intrigued light flashed across the depths of his eyes instead.
“…When the banquet ends, come to my bedroom. I’ll personally bark it for you to hear,” Chen Xiulan remarked contemplatively.
Grabbing the Beta’s calf and doing some other things while barking like a dog.
The wicked nature of an Alpha.
Naturally, Yu Mianfeng wouldn’t actually go.
【Did you mistake him for someone else?】
The voice in his mind sounded rather hesitant: 【That isn’t the main lead.】
“I know.”
Yu Mianfeng’s reply was just as perfunctory.
So, it was purely because he hated the man’s pestering? A form of humiliation?
Chen Xiulan was a serious political figure, a Federal Senator. If he chose to put on an act, no one would ever be able to detect it. It was just that he rarely wore a mask in front of Yu Mianfeng, being shockingly candid when it came to his perverted tendencies.
With nothing else to do, the two chatted for a while. Most of the time, Chen Xiulan chose topics that interested Yu Mianfeng, while Yu Mianfeng listened, occasionally offering a random response or two.
They delved into a deep discussion regarding mecha energy. The politician’s perspectives on new energy sources possessed several unique insights. The youth listened with great interest, and for the moment, the atmosphere between them could actually be considered harmonious.
A soft piece of dance music struck up, gradually rising to a crescendo and interrupting Yu Mianfeng’s thoughts.
Only now did he realize what the circular stage in the center was used for. The Yu family’s banquets rarely featured social dancing segments because the main figures of those banquets weren’t exactly the type who knew how to dance.
Following Yu Mianfeng’s line of sight toward the crowd of men and women, Chen Xiulan asked as if casually, “Do you want to dance?”
Yu Mianfeng cast a sidelong glance at him but didn’t answer.
A fleeting trace of disappointment crossed Chen Xiulan’s face before being swiftly reined in. Yu Mianfeng watched coldly from the sidelines. This man was always flawless and watertight on the outside, yet he let his emotions show so deliberately only when in his presence.
Playing the pity card didn’t work on him.
Chen Xiulan beckoned to a waiter and took a fresh glass of wine.
From its appearance, it was impossible to tell it was alcoholic at all. It was a pale pink, without a single hint of an alcohol scent, looking much more like the fruit juices favored by aristocratic Omegas.
Bringing the glass over, Chen Xiulan noticed Yu Mianfeng’s gaze fixed upon it and said with a smile, “Would you like a taste?”
“No.”
“You can take just a tiny sip. If you don’t like it, I’ll take care of the rest,” Chen Xiulan coaxed patiently.
…Yu Mianfeng didn’t even need to think about it. Looking at Chen Xiulan’s seemingly innocent expression, he knew exactly what his method of “taking care of it” would likely be.
Licking the rim of the glass he had touched, tasting the remaining liquid.
Yu Mianfeng glared at him. If the man could perform an act like secretly sniffing his clothes, it seemed self-evident what he would do with a wine glass he had drunk from.
“Get lost.”
Two soft chuckles echoed beside him.
Helpless, Chen Xiulan said, “Alright.”
Lowering his eyes to gaze at his reflection in the glass, he downed the wine in a single gulp.
The people on the central circular stage finished a dance. Feeling bored, Yu Mianfeng watched them, pondering how they managed to avoid stepping on their partners’ shoes.
Chen Xiulan summoned a waiter to swap his glass for another drink.
“If it were with Lu Wen’ang, Jiang Henggu… or perhaps Ke Cheng here, would you choose to share a dance with them?”
Chen Xiulan gripped his glass, asking as if it were a casual inquiry.
When he spoke, there was a faint scent of alcohol on his breath. It wasn’t unpleasant; it smelled of cherries.
This wine is probably quite good, Yu Mianfeng thought, his mind wandering.
“Why would it be with them?”
Purely out of boredom, and because the wait for that Omega from the Chen family was dragging on far too long, Yu Mianfeng actually felt inclined to answer him: “And objectively speaking, you didn’t give them invitation cards.”
Yu Mianfeng didn’t understand why Chen Xiulan would suddenly bring the few of them up. Chen Xiulan seemingly had no intersections with them.
“The military department is on the guest list, along with Ke Cheng and Yuan Hechu. The Marshal is also arriving shortly…”
Heaven knew what Chen Xiulan thought of, but he fell silent for a brief moment.
The Beta’s eyelid gave a sharp twitch.
Although Yuan Hechu’s stance was distinct, he would never allow a shooting to take place right under his nose. That would be an outright provocation to the law.
Yuan Hechu’s appearance would exponentially increase the difficulty of this assassination… He had to make them strike as quickly as possible.
“Why did you take those photos of me and Lu Wen’ang?”
Yu Mianfeng spoke up out of the blue.
Lu Wen’ang rarely associated with the nobility and had only recently returned to the Capital Planet. The Lu family hadn’t even held a banquet to announce his presence yet, so how did Chen Xiulan know of his existence?
“A lot of people know.”
Chen Xiulan shifted the topic: “What if it were with Lu Yibo? Your marriage partner—if he were the one inviting you to dance, would you accept?”
He gently swirled his wine glass, waiting for a definitive answer.
“Then of course I would accept,” Yu Mianfeng replied casually.
However, after accepting, he would probably leave a few nasty footprints on the protagonist’s shoes, given that his own dancing skills left much to be desired.
Beside him, an unfathomable smile flitted across Chen Xiulan’s lips before fading into nothingness, leaving only his fingertips unconsciously tapping against the rim of his glass.
Inside the banquet hall, the musical movements flowed elegantly as figures whirled gracefully across the dance floor amidst a sea of luxury and glamour.
Yu Mianfeng’s gaze swept over the spinning men and women, as if evaluating the hidden dangers among them.
The true protagonist of this banquet had yet to appear.
While he calmly observed others, countless gazes were greedily tracing the contours of his profile. Those looks coming from Alphas, Betas, and even Omegas were like an invisible spiderweb, densely enveloping the corner where he sat.
Many eyes cast glances toward his side, secretly peering at his cold features, but an invisible, distinct boundary line stood across the front. No one dared to cross the line to step forward and converse.
He might not have noticed it, or perhaps he simply didn’t care.
Yu Mianfeng summoned a waiter and requested a glass of wine.
This was a specific signal agreed upon for today’s operation.
A moment later, the crowd at the edge of the dance floor parted to both sides like the Red Sea before Moses.
An Omega dressed in a pure white, haute couture suit, carrying an innate radiance, walked straight through the bustling dance floor. With a clear target, he marched right toward Yu Mianfeng. His steps were light, and his face beamed with unmasked excitement.
“Hello, Young Master Yu. I am Chen Xing.”
A crisp voice shattered the subtle equilibrium of the corner. The Omega boldly took a seat right in the empty space to Yu Mianfeng’s left. The lines of his face were soft, and a pair of rounds, grape-like eyes glistened with watery light, naturally carrying a sort of naive, worldly-innocent charm.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t answer, turning his head to look at Chen Xiulan instead.
In the original plot, it was Chen Xiulan who actively introduced his Omega cousin to Yu Mianfeng, an act clearly backed by the Chen family’s approval.
Yet, Chen Xiulan appeared to have suffered sudden hearing loss.
He kept his eyes lowered, staring at the swaying liquid in his glass with a relaxed posture. The customary smile remained on his lips, but he turned a completely deaf ear to the drama unfolding before him, showing absolutely no intention of speaking up to defuse the situation.
Yu Mianfeng could only offer a simple “Mm” as a response.
What kind of craziness is he throwing now… The perverted supporting character had suddenly gone mute right at the crucial plot point.
Yu Mianfeng was forced to turn his attention back to Chen Xing.
Observing him up close, one could barely catch a subtle resemblance in the features between these two cousins, but their overall temperaments were worlds apart.
Chen Xiulan’s smile was like a deep pool placid on the surface but unfathomable within, seasoned with the composure and calculation of an older man. In contrast, Chen Xing’s smile was like a clear mountain stream pure, transparent, and carrying the unreserved joy of a youth, looking as though it could easily dispel any gloom.
This stark contrast almost made one forget their blood tie.
The current scene was somewhat bizarre.
Chen Xiulan, who had been pestering Yu Mianfeng just a second ago, was now staring unblinkingly as his own Omega cousin pestered Yu Mianfeng.
【The fortune of enjoying two people at once.】 The male voice in his head remarked sarcastically.
…He had no intention of liking a pair of brothers simultaneously.
The air abruptly stagnated, and an awkward silence spread like a physical weight. After the meticulously planned opening line, they actually didn’t know how to continue.
The smile on Chen Xing’s face began to stiffen. He looked to Chen Xiulan for aid, his eyes a mix of urgency and grievance: “Brother!”
His voice carried a trace of undetectable desperation.
Did his cousin back out at the last minute? This is completely different from what Father promised!
Chen Xiulan finally set his wine glass down without any rush. Lifting his head, his face instantly switched back to his flawless, gentle smile: “Young Master Yu, please don’t mind him. This is my younger brother, Chen Xing. He happens to be a loyal admirer of yours.”
His tone was natural and smooth, as if the silence from a moment ago had never occurred.
Only Chen Xiulan himself knew that he had nearly shattered his wine glass just now.
Why is he treating an Omega with this kind of attitude… while he never gives an Alpha a good face.
“Does Young Master Yu still remember me? We met on the day of your coming-of-age ceremony!” Chen Xing immediately chimed in.
With Chen Xiulan’s introduction serving as a springboard, Chen Xing instantly opened up. He was incredibly talkative and possessed an easy confidence, actively searching for topics that might interest Yu Mianfeng. Yu Mianfeng found himself somewhat unequipped to handle someone like Chen Xing, who was like a chirping little sparrow.
Out of courtesy toward an Omega, Yu Mianfeng didn’t display any signs of impatience. But it was only temporary.
To keep up appearances, Yu Mianfeng lowered his eyelashes and took a sip of the fruit wine the waiter had delivered.
Sitting across from him, Chen Xing observed Yu Mianfeng’s expression, then looked back at his brother.
“Chen Xing used to say he would marry no one but an Alpha, but he has recently changed his mind.”
Chen Xiulan smiled, dutifully fulfilling the role he was supposed to play. Even though he was consumed with jealousy.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t respond.
He detected that something was slightly amiss, forcing himself to steady his breathing.
There was something in the wine; he had been drugged. Fortunately, he had only taken a single sip.
This was unexpected.
He wasn’t sure who had administered the drug, but he could utilize this to achieve his objective.
To ensure the assassination went smoothly, he needed to create a distraction at the banquet.
A commotion echoed from the main entrance. Without even looking up, Yu Mianfeng understood that it was likely Yuan Hechu arriving. Only the Marshal’s travel arrangements would involve such a massive spectacle.
He had to accelerate his actions.
His heart was pounding furiously, and his vision was distorting, to the point where he could barely hear the sounds around him.
Yu Mianfeng stared down at the wine glass before him, took another gulp of the fruit wine, and set it back on his table.
His senses were being continuously magnified by the aphrodisiac medication. A sensation of palpitations as if his very soul were shivering began to spread. Yu Mianfeng subconsciously leaned his body forward, pressing a hand over his heart. This sudden, pronounced movement immediately caused the two men beside him to notice that something was wrong.
The smile on Chen Xiulan’s face vanished completely in an instant. Right in sync with him was Chen Xing’s scream.
Hearing the commotion over here, rapid footsteps quickly rushed toward them, presumably belonging to Yuan Hechu. The crowd also began to stir, unsure of what had transpired.
Now was the absolute best time to strike.
The youth’s breath was scorching hot, yet his mood was excellent.
That extreme extremist noble would soon be shot dead.
【…You still have the peace of mind to think about these things?】
Why wouldn’t I?
He utilized everything.
The world spun violently before his eyes, reduced once more to a jumble of chaotic color blocks, flickering like an ancient computer screen. Yu Mianfeng gripped the armrest tightly with one hand, staring at the tabletop before him as he strove to maintain consciousness. Shifting away the cluttered inquiries ringing in his ears, he faintly caught a familiar sound amidst this abnormality.
【Data… bzz… Rebooting…】
It was the familiar voice of the true System; one he hadn’t heard in a very long time.
The virus generated by the glitch had gone offline.
Yu Mianfeng fought with everything he had to stay conscious.
He felt someone touching his forehead, as if measuring his temperature. Amidst the chaos, Yu Mianfeng reached out toward that person’s sleeve, like a drowning man clutching at a final piece of driftwood. However, his entire body was drained of strength, and his fingers merely managed to brush past the edge of the fabric.
Just as his hand was about to slip away, his wrist was firmly caught in a reverse grip.
Yu Mianfeng lacked the strength to struggle.
He strained to quiet his rapid breathing; in his hazy state, even his breath had turned scalding warm.
Through the dizziness, the Beta forced his eyes open.
As if gaining focus, like a misted mirror being wiped clean, Yu Mianfeng finally saw clearly that the hand pinning him down belonged to Yuan Hechu.
The other man’s habitually composed expression showed a slight fracture, urgently inspecting his condition.
Yuan Hechu opened his mouth, asking something in a stern tone, but Yu Mianfeng could barely hear him and offered no reply.
Calculating the time, his gaze drifted past Yuan Hechu, catching sight of Ke Cheng standing in the distance.
Ke Cheng was also looking at him.
It was rare to see the Beta in such a fragile, disheveled state; at least, it was something that had never appeared in the intelligence reports Ke Cheng had gathered. That pale face of his was currently masked by a flushed heat, his blue eyes looking as though they held a watery mist, and a small tip of his tongue could be seen when he exhaled.
It was difficult to connect the person before him now with the figure in the combat recordings Ke Cheng collected.
However, the man was clearly far more interested in his current state. He was sizing up his present condition with great intrigue, opening his mouth as if intending to say something to him, only to have his line of sight blocked immediately by Yuan Hechu taking a step to the right.
A gunshot rang out, followed by a second, and a third.
The banquet fell into utter chaos. Everyone feared for their own safety as screams erupted one after another, people crowding and fleeing in all directions.
Yuan Hechu’s expression hardened. The moment the gunshots echoed, he shielded the youth behind his back. He had just drawn his weapon and turned his head to assess the situation when his sleeve was yanked hard by Yu Mianfeng.
Yu Mianfeng had to ensure that the target was completely dead. He could not allow Yuan Hechu to intervene and stop it.
He gripped Yuan Hechu’s sleeve tightly without letting go, displaying a tense, holding attitude. Lifting his eyes to look up at Yuan Hechu, Yu Mianfeng licked his dry lips, his burning breath spilling across the man.
He said, “…Take me away.”
