- Chapter 10 - The Domineering Beta (Part 10 - Edited) — “You can test me…”
Monday, Capital Military Academy.
Today was the academy’s routine grade-level quiz: mecha combat.
The scorching midday sun pierced through the top glass of the massive domed arena, falling squarely onto the tournament stage. Up there, a brutal fight was underway. The mecha operated by a Beta sat right at the very center of everyone’s converging gazes.
Alphas were all fanatical warmongers, even more so when inside a military academy.
From the spectator stands, the Alphas let out near-frenzied roars, though it was impossible to tell exactly who they were cheering for.
Accompanied by a heavy, resounding thud, the opposing mecha crashed to its knees. The referee declared the winner, and the cockpit covers of both sides popped open abruptly.
Staff members stepped onto the stage to clear the damaged mechas and check if the competitors were injured. However, the students at the military academy possessed exceptional physical conditioning; they were tough and thick-skinned. As long as it wasn’t a fatal injury, lying in a healing pod for a few days would fix them right up.
Yu Mianfeng leapt down from the towering metallic cockpit. His landing posture carried a sense of casual indifference, swift and lightning-fast.
He didn’t give his defeated opponent a single glance, as if even a shred of his peripheral vision was too precious to waste on them.
Arrogant.
Many onlookers thought this in their hearts.
Yet, their eyes couldn’t help but fall back upon the Beta.
Sweat trickled down from his temples, and a fine sheen of perspiration also rested on his neck. It rolled past the slightly slender lines of his shoulders and neck which were tightly contoured by his pitch-black training uniform while his chest rose and fell slightly with his breathing.
The sunlight illuminated his exposed, cold-white skin. His beauty and pallor blended into a sickly, almost fragile aesthetic, but his eyes held a sharp, piercing edge that looked down upon the crowd.
He hadn’t removed the training gloves he wore during combat. The black gloves wrapped around his distinct, well-defined knuckles, faintly revealing the color of the skin underneath.
Strength and fragility achieved a bizarre, striking equilibrium in his body.
To him, victory was a mundane habit.
In the Capital Military Academy, which worshipped absolute power and was dominated by top-tier Alphas, the halls were filled with strength-revering Alphas who respected nothing but sheer power. For Yu Mianfeng, a Beta, to permanently occupy the number one spot all year round naturally drew immense attention.
No matter how those Alphas gossiped about Yu Mianfeng in private, on the surface, they didn’t dare show any other reaction.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t care about other people’s thoughts, nor did he mind their stares. Familiar with the attention, he simply ignored them and swept his gaze over the crowd in the stands.
Those people avoided his eyes, their gazes flickering away.
Without pausing his stride, the Beta walked toward the lounge.
A well-defined hand holding an unopened bottle of mineral water was extended just right, reaching toward the edge of his path.
Yu Mianfeng was indeed somewhat thirsty, and his movements were lazy, carrying a hint of carelessness. Thinking it was just another person trying to curry favor, he lifted his sharp blue eyes slightly. The moment he saw that the person offering the water was Chen Xiulan, he immediately lost any intention of responding.
His footsteps didn’t falter for even a fraction of a second as he abruptly changed direction.
Lingering like an un-discarded ghost.
Chen Xiulan caught up anyway.
The man had a high-bridged nose and a sharply contoured jawline. Through the thin layer of lenses framed in silver, one could see eyes as bright as cold stars. When Chen Xiulan looked at him, a smile played at the corners of his mouth, making people inexplicably feel a warmth like a gentle spring breeze. His focus rested entirely on Yu Mianfeng.
Chen Xiulan said with a smile, “Long time no see, Young Master Yu.”
His voice was gentle and elegant, carrying just the right amount of intimacy.
Yu Mianfeng knitted his brows.
Only he knew that this person was completely unlike his easygoing exterior.
Chen Xiulan was a senior four years ahead of him, an annoying fellow, and a male supporting character from the original novel. For some unknown reason, he had turned around to pester Yu Mianfeng instead, causing him endless irritation.
As if deliberately trying to humiliate him, Chen Xiulan had once publicly confessed to him with a bouquet of roses. Later, Yu Mianfeng had caught him in a private locker room, stealing his personal undergarments just to sniff them.
If Chen Xiulan hadn’t been a male supporting character with a heavy amount of plot significance, the mere act of secretly sniffing his clothes would have given Yu Mianfeng enough reason to find a pretext to lock him away in the Inspectorate Bureau for over a decade.
Yu Mianfeng was too lazy to waste words on him.
Chen Xiulan acted completely oblivious to his resistance, the smile still lingering on his lips.
He deliberately and unhurriedly demonstrated that the plastic seal on the bottle cap was fully intact. Only then did he slowly unscrew it for him, offering it to his face once more.
“See? Brand new. I just bought it from the vending machine nearby. You don’t have to worry about me drugging it.”
Chen Xiulan smiled playfully.
But his trust level with Yu Mianfeng was essentially zero.
The youth didn’t even think about it. Unwilling to waste his breath, he turned and left, walking swiftly with a clear objective toward the exclusive VIP corridor.
Yu Mianfeng had a dedicated private locker room at the school because he was intolerant to Alpha pheromones. Due to his unique status as a Beta and his powerful family background, he was granted an independent lounge in this military academy where Alpha pheromones could be smelled everywhere.
Passing through the raucous spectator area thick with mixed pheromones, Yu Mianfeng walked straight toward a heavy alloy door.
It was an iris-recognition door, requiring a very high level of security clearance.
The heavy, authorized door slid open silently, then quickly sealed shut behind him, instantly cutting off the clamor of the outside world.
He had originally intended to shake Chen Xiulan off here.
To his surprise, not long after the door closed, Chen Xiulan followed him inside by swiping a clearance card.
Yu Mianfeng had a premonition about why the man was looking for him.
Sure enough, in the next second, Chen Xiulan spoke.
“Does your boyfriend know that you are meeting with other Alphas in private?”
Chen Xiulan observed his expression with great interest, holding out a few items in front of him.
They were a few photographs.
The background of the images had been blurred out, reduced to an ambiguous shadow of dim light. Only the two people in the center of the photo were exceptionally clear.
A tall Alpha was leaning down, intimately pressing close to his older brother’s fiancé. He was lightly gripping the Beta’s wrist, lowering his head, and extending a crimson tongue to lick the ice cream tightly held in the youth’s hand.
The two protagonists in the photo were Lu Wen’ang and Yu Mianfeng.
No one knew who had taken this picture. The captured angle was tricky and full of malice, making the scene look incredibly scandalous. However, in the very next second after that photo was taken, Yu Mianfeng had coldly smashed the ice cream right onto the guy’s face.
Yu Mianfeng’s gaze lingered on those photos for only a brief flash, so fast that it was impossible to catch his emotion.
The youth lifted his eyelids and asked back in a cold voice, “So?”
Smiling, Chen Xiulan tossed out a few more photos. Clearly, this secret photography hadn’t been a one-time occurrence.
This time, the photos caught Ke Cheng and Yu Mianfeng.
At the underground boxing ring that day, they had briefly interacted at close range.
Yu Mianfeng was baffled as to why Chen Xiulan was showing him these things.
What did this have to do with Ke Cheng?
“You don’t know?”
Chen Xiulan raised an eyebrow. “Then again, you’ve never given Alphas a second glance. Ke Cheng is a textbook case of Alpha Mania, a hypersexual patient. You need to be careful around him.”
Yu Mianfeng noticed that Chen Xiulan used the word “case.”
In the next second, Chen Xiulan spoke again.
“Tell me, if I were to send these to your fiancé, do you think he would know to back off?” Chen Xiulan sneered.
“Not everyone is like you,” the Beta said, frowning.
This cold expression of his made the Alpha want to monopolize him so badly that even while standing right in front of him, Chen Xiulan couldn’t help but fantasize about other things.
Hypersexual patients usually had intense desires and could only find relief through their own fantasies.
Chen Xiulan narrowed his eyes, answering beside the point: “Fortunately, we are still at school right now… Otherwise, you would be threatening me with a gun again.”
Back then, Chen Xiulan had been highly skilled at picking locker room locks. On the day his actions were exposed, he was still holding the youth’s underwear in his hand with the evidence laid out plain as day, so he was naturally given a severe thrashing by the Beta.
Afterward, Chen Xiulan lay in the hospital for half a month. It was unclear if he was just faking it out of fear of retaliation.
Yu Mianfeng had completely lost all interest in paying him any attention. Upon hearing those words, he drew the firearm slung at his side, raising it without any hesitation to point it directly at Chen Xiulan.
“You can try me.”
Yu Mianfeng lowered his eyelashes and stared back with a freezing gaze, saying, “Try and see if I’ll pull the trigger, and see if I’ll beat you half to death just like the way I shot and killed that other Alpha back then.”
