- A Beauty in the 80s Goes on a Blind Date with Her Child, Captivating the Military Compound
- Chapter 30 - He Hasn't Even Tasted Sisi's Cooking Yet
Wang Xiaodao pulled his gaze back. Only then did he notice the soldier standing behind the young woman.
The man was motionless, his eyes cold and sharp, like a wolf guarding its food.
He immediately dropped his smile, quickly wiping his hands on his clothes, and deftly pulled out a cigarette case. “Hello, Leader. Would you like one?”
Gu Chengfeng waved his hand, signaling that he didn’t smoke.
Wang Xiaodao put the cigarette case back, his slick face perpetually smiling. “What can I do for you two Leaders?”
Though he said “two Leaders,” his attention was focused on Gu Chengfeng.
Gu Chengfeng ignored him, only lowering his head to look at Shen Sisi.
Shen Sisi smiled brightly. “Brother Dao, I’m Sister Hongmei’s sister. She told me to come find you.”
The mention of Jiang Hongmei made Wang Xiaodao suddenly remember. “Oh, it’s you! The one who wanted to buy coconut oil.”
“Yes, that’s right…”
Wang Xiaodao let out a sigh of relief. He had been so nervous just now, thinking he had done something wrong.
Hearing that Shen Sisi wanted to buy coconut oil, his eyes lit up with delight. He quickly put down his notebook and instructed the people nearby to monitor the unloading of the cargo.
“Please follow me, both of you…”
Shen Sisi carried Niu Niu and followed him with light steps.
Gu Chengfeng didn’t know why she needed coconut oil, so he quickly followed, entering a medium-sized cargo ship.
An Unexpected Turn
The cabin wasn’t large, piled high with countless large barrels.
Wang Xiaodao walked to a random barrel, pulled out a key to use as a wrench, and pried open the lid in a few quick moves, leaving a small gap.
Inside was a large barrel filled with white, lard-like paste.
“Sister, this is all top-quality cold-pressed coconut oil. One barrel is forty jin, two thousand jin in total. This oil is pressed from island coconuts, very fresh. I wouldn’t be willing to sell it if you weren’t a friend of a friend…”
Wang Xiaodao smiled very ingratiatingly, praising the oil to the skies, acting as if it were a rare treasure. He looked at her as if she were a Goddess of Wealth.
Shen Sisi was dumbfounded when she saw the barrel of coconut oil!
In the cold weather, the coconut oil had completely solidified. How was she supposed to weigh it, let alone use it to make medicinal oil?
Wang Xiaodao talked himself hoarse. Seeing her staring blankly, he asked, “How much are you looking to buy…”
Shen Sisi’s words instantly got stuck. She stammered and held up one finger.
“One thousand jin?”
“One hundred jin?”
Shen Sisi gave an awkward, embarrassed smile. “Ten…”
Ten jin of oil was already a lot. She estimated there would still be plenty left after making this batch of medicine.
Wang Xiaodao’s mind buzzed. Only ten jin? Was she playing with him?
Did she know how busy he was?
He felt like he’d been played for a fool. He wanted to erupt but, constrained by Gu Chengfeng’s presence, he could only grumble. “Didn’t you two bother to ask around? When has Wang Xiaodao ever done such small business? Isn’t this just wasting my time?”
Shen Sisi genuinely hadn’t realized he didn’t do retail sales…
“I’m sorry…” she apologized softly.
Gu Chengfeng’s face darkened. He shot the man a cold glare and snapped, “How do you run your business, daring to pick and choose customers!”
“I…” Wang Xiaodao was furious but didn’t dare utter a word. After all, he hadn’t told anyone that he didn’t sell in small quantities.
Then, Gu Chengfeng turned to Shen Sisi, his stern, dark face instantly softening. “Is this coconut oil absolutely necessary?”
Shen Sisi shook her head. “No, not really. I mainly wanted it because it was cheap… but now, I don’t want it anymore.”
Coconut oil solidifies easily, making it inconvenient for both weighing and medicine preparation.
“Actually, what I wanted was peanut oil and soybean oil, but they’re a bit expensive and require tickets… The black market has them, and I can pay cash, but they’re costly…”
That’s why she had considered the coconut oil.
But now, it seemed coconut oil wasn’t very suitable either.
Shen Sisi looked worried. If all else failed, she would just buy some from the supply and marketing cooperative first to get the medicinal oil started. She couldn’t break her promise on the first order; how would she do business in the future?
Just then, Wang Xiaodao spoke up. “Hey, you should have said so sooner…”
He walked to the back of a pile of barrels and pulled out a large glass jar containing half a jar of golden oil.
“I have about half a jar of soybean oil left here, about eight jin. It was a sample sent to me by an oil-pressing workshop. I don’t like the way it tastes when I cook, and I was just about to give it to the brothers on this ship. Since you need it, you can just have it!”
Wang Xiaodao simply did her a favor, giving the oil to Shen Sisi without asking for a penny.
Shen Sisi was surprised and delighted. “How can I accept this?”
Wang Xiaodao glanced nervously at Gu Chengfeng and quickly laughed. “Consider it my apology for my rudeness just now!”
Shen Sisi hadn’t even spoken when Gu Chengfeng assertively took the oil jar, insisting on paying. “We have discipline; we can’t take a single thread or needle from the people.”
Wang Xiaodao couldn’t argue with Gu Chengfeng and symbolically accepted three yuan from him.
“You two take this back and try it. If you think the oil is good, you can come back to me anytime. Since you’re Hongmei’s sister, I promise to give you the lowest price…”
Shen Sisi nodded repeatedly. Just as she was about to respond, Gu Chengfeng grabbed her arm and quickly darted out of the ship’s cabin in one smooth movement.
Shen Sisi didn’t even have time to react before she was back on the dock, her hand firmly held by his large one, weaving through the crowd.
She truly hadn’t expected to come for coconut oil and end up with an unexpected gain!
She got eight or nine jin of oil at a price far below the market rate.
Of course, she knew this was a coincidence. If she decided to seriously pursue the medicinal oil business, she would have to plan long-term. Perhaps she really would come back to see Brother Dao…
A Little Cat Scratch
All the way back, Gu Chengfeng’s expression was dark.
Was he not giving her enough money?
Shen Sisi was so frugal she didn’t dare to buy even ten jin of soybean oil at the supply and marketing cooperative, resorting to a mixed-up place like the dock to buy cheap coconut oil.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. He wasn’t angry at Shen Sisi, but at himself!
Shen Sisi also didn’t know why Gu Chengfeng was suddenly unhappy and looked so sullen.
Was he upset because he felt she embarrassed him?
Shen Sisi deliberately slowed her pace, her finger gently, like a small cat, scratching Gu Chengfeng’s finger.
The angry man in front of her instantly stopped, his body rigid like iron.
“You… what are you doing?”
Shen Sisi stood her ground, her voice clear and sincere. “Gu Chengfeng, I’m sorry. I bothered you to personally accompany me on such a small errand. I promise I won’t do it again.”
Gu Chengfeng quickly frowned, his words fueling his irritation.
He pressed his thin lips together hard. “Forget it. Let’s go home…”
Back home, Shen Sisi handed Niu Niu to Gu Chengfeng.
She carefully placed the soybean oil in the cabinet, then poured the scored mushrooms into the chicken soup, setting it to slow-simmer.
The moment the fresh mushrooms met the boiling meat broth, the aroma was instantly released, filling the entire house with a mouth-watering fragrance.
Shen Sisi tied on an apron, intending to stir-fry a few small dishes, when Gu Chengfeng lifted the curtain and walked in.
“You go rest. I’ll do it.”
“What?” Shen Sisi gasped. When did he learn to cook?
Gu Chengfeng naturally took the spatula from her hand and, without explanation, gently pushed her out by the shoulder.
He hadn’t even tasted Sisi’s cooking yet; how could he let Heizi and the others get the first bite?
