- Chapter 29 - The Atmosphere Becomes Too Intimate
What should she do now?
Shen Sisi was at a loss, her mind a bit scrambled.
One thing was certain: she would absolutely not lower herself to seek favor from Yang Qiuxia or Zhang Xiuhong.
But if she didn’t, Gu Chengfeng would be in a very difficult position.
He was only twenty-five, already a Regimental Commander at such a young age, with limitless potential for his career.
If she harmed his official prospects, she would never forgive herself!
She had considered giving up—separating while they weren’t yet legally married.
But then she reconsidered. Their situation was already causing a sensation. If they broke up now, it would be even harder for Gu Chengfeng to find a wife later.
Forget it. It was just a small setback.
She would find a way to make it up to Gu Chengfeng.
For now, she had to focus on her money-making plan.
“Gu Chengfeng, I…”
The rest of her words were stuck in her throat, ruthlessly cut off by someone.
“Enough!” Gu Chengfeng’s face was dark, his eyes cold and severe. He vaguely guessed what she was about to say.
His voice became incredibly hoarse. “If you’re thinking about breaking up, I advise you not to even think about it.”
“What?”
Shen Sisi’s eyes were wide with confusion. She finally snapped back to reality and poked him angrily with her finger. “What are you thinking!”
“Then what were you trying to say…”
“I was saying I need you to help me kill the chicken. Once the soup is on the stove, you can come with me to buy something.”
Gu Chengfeng tilted his head slightly, speaking in an almost whispered puff of air. “That’s it?”
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course, what did you think I was going to say?”
His mood fluctuated wildly, and his tone held uncertainty. “I thought, I thought you were…”
“You thought I was going to leave you, to call off the wedding?” Shen Sisi asked with feigned anger.
Gu Chengfeng said nothing, his heavy breathing ragged, hinting at the guilt of being read correctly.
It was the first time she had seen Gu Chengfeng so nervous. She burst out laughing, winking playfully with her eyelashes. “Alright, I was teasing you. Hurry up and help me kill the chicken…”
Hearing that she didn’t want to break up, Gu Chengfeng secretly sighed in relief and happily grabbed the chicken, taking it to the kitchen.
Soon, the chicken’s desperate squawk echoed from inside.
Gu Chengfeng boiled hot water to scald the chicken. In no time, he had the feathers cleaned off, rinsed the chicken twice with clear water, and placed it on the chopping block.
Hearing the sound of chopping, Shen Sisi, worried about his injury, quickly rushed into the kitchen.
As she entered, she saw Gu Chengfeng using his uninjured left hand to grip the knife, hacking the chicken into medium-sized pieces.
He was positioned sideways, his arm powerful and his muscles slightly bulging. She even had the strange sensation that he was more dexterous using his left hand.
“Let me do it. Don’t reopen your wound.”
Shen Sisi was about to take over, but Gu Chengfeng told her there was no need. He wasn’t so fragile that he couldn’t chop a chicken.
Shen Sisi watched for a moment and saw that he was indeed managing quite easily. She turned to light the fire and heat the wok, quickly stir-frying the chicken until the skin was lightly golden and rendered oil, then transferred the chicken to the earthenware pot.
She added water, sliced ginger, and a small amount of salt. Once the soup came to a boil, she set it to simmer on the lowest heat.
A Sizzling Moment
Whether from the exhaustion or the small, crowded kitchen, Shen Sisi was dripping with sweat. The wisps of hair near her forehead were plastered to her cheeks.
In the small space, Gu Chengfeng was standing very close to her. All his breaths seemed to be stolen by the fragrance of Shen Sisi.
Watching her busy face, flushed pink, he suddenly felt a sense of unreality.
This happiness is too unreal…
Gu Chengfeng propped one leg on the floor, leaning casually against the stove. His finger unconsciously reached out and wiped the sweat beads from her face.
Shen Sisi, who was busy managing the fire, suddenly froze, a blush immediately spreading across her cheeks.
Feeling the rough pad of his thumb gently brushing her face, she could almost hear her own heartbeat.
His deep, burning gaze was fixed silently upon her, as if trying to pull her into his depths…
Perhaps the stove fire was too intense, or perhaps the atmosphere was simply too intimate, but Shen Sisi felt the air around them was suffocatingly hot.
Just then, a small head suddenly peeked in, a pair of curious eyes sparkling as she secretly giggled.
Daddy is touching Mommy’s face!
Just like Mommy always touches her face. It’s so loving…
Seeing Niu Niu’s playful head and her beautiful, starry eyes, Gu Chengfeng quickly let go of Shen Sisi and awkwardly coughed twice. “Uh… you had some sweat on your face just now.”
Shen Sisi mumbled in acknowledgement, fleeing his side as if her life depended on it, quickly scooping up Niu Niu.
“What’s wrong, my good girl?”
Niu Niu smacked her little lips and looked at the bubbling pot. “Meat smells good. Niu Niu hungry.”
Shen Sisi patiently explained, “You still have to wait a little while. The chicken hasn’t cooked soft yet. Mommy will make you an egg noodle dish first, okay?”
Niu Niu obediently nodded. “Egg noodles, yummy!”
Just then, Gu Chengfeng walked over and held out his arms to her. “Give the child to me. Focus on your cooking.”
Shen Sisi transferred the soft little bundle in her arms to Gu Chengfeng’s embrace.
The child had gained a bit of weight recently, making her slightly heavy, but Gu Chengfeng held her easily, lifting Niu Niu with one hand as if she were a kitten.
Shen Sisi was still cautious and reminded Niu Niu not to touch Daddy’s shoulder wound.
Niu Niu was very obedient, moving her small hands away. Then, she leaned her head close to Gu Chengfeng’s right shoulder and puffed out her cheeks to blow on it. “Hoo-hoo.”
“Daddy, Niu Niu will blow on it. Then it won’t hurt anymore.”
Gu Chengfeng’s heart was melting. He was experiencing the benefits of having a daughter—a truly thoughtful little cotton-padded jacket.
“Thank you, Niu Niu. Daddy doesn’t hurt anymore…”
A Trip to Wharf Number Nine
Soon, Shen Sisi had the noodles ready.
After feeding Niu Niu, she asked Heizi to watch the fire on the stove, then took Gu Chengfeng and the child out the door.
Following Jiang Hongmei’s directions, they headed straight to Wharf Number Nine.
Gu Chengfeng walked behind them. Seeing that their destination was the docks, his eyebrows subtly furrowed.
Shen Sisi, completely unaware, carried the child and walked straight ahead.
Looking at the bustling wharf, she casually grabbed an elder brother who had just finished unloading cargo. “Big Brother, is Brother Dao here?”
The man pointed to a large, stout man directing the shipment of goods by the cargo ship. “That’s him.”
Shen Sisi thanked the man and, with Gu Chengfeng trailing her, walked up behind Brother Dao under the watchful eyes of the crowd.
“Brother Dao!”
Wang Xiaodao was busy working when he suddenly heard a soft, delicate voice. He instantly perked up.
He turned around and saw a young woman with a fair face and red lips. She was truly a stunner.
“You’re looking for me…”
He smiled cheerfully, but before his mirth reached his eyes, he felt a wave of killing intent wash over him.
