- Chapter 27 - Moving Things Piece by Piece into the House
Heizi slowly closed the door again, covering his face with his hand.
He looked utterly flustered. “Take your time, Brother Feng. Everything’s fine, I’ll wait for you by the truck…”
Heizi sounded slightly fawning and mixed with heavy embarrassment.
Shen Sisi froze on the spot, her cheeks burning as if on fire. She didn’t have the courage to turn around and look.
Who was that person?
He didn’t even have the common courtesy to knock!
So rude!
Gu Chengfeng’s face was equally dark.
However, feeling the heavy weight on his chest and the breath as hot as a small flame, the corner of his eyebrow involuntarily twitched upward.
Shen Sisi carefully examined his wound at close range.
The cut wasn’t huge, and it was stitched, but the injury beneath seemed deep.
“You’re hurt this badly, and you still told me it was nothing!”
She was frantic, scurrying to her feet like an ant on a hot pan, genuinely angry.
Gu Chengfeng was so careless with his body!
He was severely injured yet acted completely unconcerned.
Gu Chengfeng smiled helplessly. In his view, this little injury was like an ant bite—it didn’t count for anything.
The injuries he had sustained before were far more serious than this. This was truly no big deal.
“It’s truly nothing. I’ll be fine quickly!” Gu Chengfeng tried to calm her down.
Shen Sisi pressed him down without argument, her stance quite fierce. “Stop trying to act tough! Let’s stop the bleeding first…”
A few minutes later, Shen Sisi finally managed to stop the bleeding.
Gu Chengfeng got up and went into the room to change into clean clothes.
After the commotion, both their faces were unnaturally red, like ripe apples.
They emerged into the courtyard one after the other, feeling slightly awkward.
A Truckload of Dowry
A small flatbed truck was parked outside the yard gate. It looked much larger than the one she took to her aunt’s house last time, a colossal thing sitting quietly there.
Heizi was leaning against the front of the truck, taking deep drags of a cigarette, trying hard to compose himself.
Gu Chengfeng shot Heizi a fierce glare. “You’re a father now, and you still haven’t learned how to knock?”
It was bad enough that he embarrassed himself; he wouldn’t let Sisi be embarrassed too.
Heizi took a puff, let the smoke linger, then tossed the cigarette butt down and stepped on it forcefully. “I just forgot Sister-in-law was here!”
He nodded and bowed sheepishly toward Shen Sisi. “My apologies, Sister-in-law. I’m a rough guy. Please don’t take it personally…”
Shen Sisi looked closely. Wasn’t this the bald guy?
She had misunderstood him earlier because he looked so mean and spoke so crudely.
“It’s you…”
Shen Sisi greeted him warmly, her enthusiasm mixed with a palpable sense of apology.
“I should be the one apologizing. I misunderstood you before and thought you were a bad person. I almost wrongly accused you!”
Shen Sisi apologized sincerely.
She knew judging people by appearance was wrong. After this incident, she vowed never to be so careless when judging others and to avoid drawing conclusions based only on the surface.
Heizi waved his hand dismissively. “It’s fine. I’m used to it. What can I do when I look like a killer?”
He laughed self-deprecatingly, but Shen Sisi fell into contemplation.
She sensed the helplessness and bitterness beneath Heizi’s facade.
She knew anything she said now would be useless, so she could only show her apology through action.
“Alright then, don’t just stand there. Please come in and have some tea!” Shen Sisi warmly invited him.
Heizi quickly replied, “No need to trouble you. We don’t want those gossips to start wagging their tongues again.”
Shen Sisi immediately fell silent, looking embarrassed.
Seeing this, Gu Chengfeng spoke up to smooth things over. “Don’t take it to heart. I’ll deal with him!”
With that, he balled up his fist and actually punched Heizi.
“This matter is over. No one is allowed to mention it again!”
Heizi was struck hard, wincing as if hit by a piece of iron, baring his teeth but daring not to retaliate.
Then, Gu Chengfeng retracted his fist and gave Heizi a meaningful look that only the two of them understood.
“Stop wasting time. Start moving the stuff.”
Heizi smiled playfully but grumbled under his breath. “Not even Zhou Bapi was as demanding as you. You won’t even let a man have a sip of water, rushing him to work…”
Despite his complaints, he quickly called a few of his buddies to unload the truck, moving the items into the house piece by piece.
The scene was like a swarm of ants moving house.
Shen Sisi was stunned; there was so much packed in the back of that truck!
There was a complete set of brand-new, solid wood furniture—tables, chairs, benches, and a dressing table—all exuding a faint wooden fragrance.
There was also a sewing machine, gold bracelets, a mechanical watch, and a quilt made of dragon and phoenix brocade satin.
And there was a bicycle, with a large red silk ribbon flower tied to the handlebars…
The items were so numerous they were dazzling; she couldn’t take them all in.
Shen Sisi stared at the objects, and the more she looked, the more familiar they seemed.
It looks like…
Seeing her dazed, Gu Chengfeng gently nudged her shoulder with his elbow. “Look familiar, right?”
Shen Sisi nodded. “Could this be…”
She had a bold guess but dared not voice it easily.
She just opened her large, deer-like eyes and looked at Gu Chengfeng in disbelief.
The next moment, his low voice approached her like a breeze, gently sweeping past her ear.
“Remember what I told you?”
“Things that don’t belong to him, he won’t get a single one…”
Gu Chengfeng smiled meaningfully, that smile carrying a unique charm. The rest of the sentence was left unsaid.
Shen Sisi’s little heart thumped twice.
Gu Chengfeng actually got back the betrothal gifts intended for her uncle! How did he do it?
Seeing her intense curiosity, Gu Chengfeng motioned with his chin toward the busy Heizi. “We can sit down and talk slowly once he’s finished working…”
In just a few moments, the originally spacious living room was packed full of the furniture and items.
Shen Sisi stood at the door. For some reason, watching their house gradually being filled gave her a sense of security.
Seeing a group of people bustling around inside, with no way for her to help, she turned to the kitchen.
She poured everyone hot tea and sliced fruit, inviting them to stay for a simple meal.
Tonight, she planned to braise chicken with mushrooms.
She first washed the mushrooms and scored them all with criss-cross patterns.
Then she prepared the ingredients for a few stir-fry dishes.
Everything was ready now, except for the chicken from her elder sister’s house.
Where is my elder sister?
Just as Shen Sisi was thinking about her, her sister seemed to have a telepathic connection and showed up at the door.
“Excuse me, is this Sister Sisi’s house?”
Jiang Hongmei, wearing an old headscarf and carrying a small chicken cage, peered through the doorway.
Gu Chengfeng heard Shen Sisi’s name and his gaze instinctively sharpened. “Who are you?”
Jiang Hongmei held up the chicken cage. “I’m here to deliver the chicken for her. Is she home?”
Before she could finish, Shen Sisi heard the commotion and rushed out of the kitchen. “I’m here, I’m here! Sister, please put the chicken in the yard and come inside for the money.”
Jiang Hongmei was sharp. As soon as she heard the tone, she understood Shen Sisi wanted to talk to her.
She followed Shen Sisi inside, and the moment they stepped in, Shen Sisi eagerly asked, “Sister, what did you find out for me?”
