- Chapter 14 - Gu Chengfeng Hands Out Wedding Candy
Shen Sisi stopped in her tracks, facing the group’s strange stares. “Me? You didn’t get it wrong?”
“You’re Comrade Shen!” The driver wiped his brow. “No mistake, the list here says it’s for Comrade Shen Sisi to sign.”
She snatched the paper from his hand. It was a long list of items.
Afraid that the person asking for her wouldn’t recognize Shen Sisi, Gu Chengfeng had written Chen Jianguo’s name first.
However, the recipient who had to sign for it had to be Shen Sisi.
The sudden reversal left everyone caught off guard and speechless.
Especially Chen Jianguo, whose face felt like it was about to fall off.
As much as they had flattered him moments ago, he was now just as humiliated.
Shen Sisi stared at the list, her mind buzzing. This was… the bride price from Gu Chengfeng. But where was he?
She completely ignored the truck full of things and grabbed the driver, asking, “Big Brother, where is the person who asked you to deliver this? Where did he go?”
The driver scratched his head. “He called our boss and told him to get the goods ready, then told me to drive them over overnight. I didn’t see him myself.”
Chen Jianguo rolled his eyes in annoyance. “He didn’t even show his face. He thinks he can just send some stuff to get her? No way! It looks like that guy surnamed Gu doesn’t care much about you, either…”
Shen Sisi was about to speak, but the driver couldn’t stand it and interjected. “Comrade, don’t speak too soon. You should take a look at the stuff first!”
He waved a hand, and two young men jumped out from the back of the truck, carrying ropes and shoulder poles, and began to unload the items.
The latest model of a Swallow-brand sewing machine, a Permanent-brand bicycle, a mechanical watch, and a Shanghai-brand tape recorder—all the modern essentials.
There was also a solid wood wardrobe, a dressing table with a mirror, and a pair of gold bracelets.
As the items were brought out one by one, the eyes of the people around them widened in disbelief.
What kind of a wealthy family could produce so many betrothal gifts overnight, just to marry a “second-hand woman”?
Shen Sisi was also astonished. Her intuition told her that Gu Chengfeng’s background and influence were even more formidable than she had imagined!
She understood that Gu Chengfeng was doing this to save her face.
To make people respect her.
And to ensure that the mother and daughter, and her aunt, would no longer be bullied.
But she couldn’t let her uncle benefit from this…
The thought of these things ending up in her uncle’s pocket, used to pay off his debts and serve as her cousin’s dowry, made her feel incredibly dejected.
Just then, someone joked, “Lao Chen, I never knew your Sisi had this kind of skill! Her bride price is so grand. Your Tingting’s must be even more…”
Chen Jianguo’s face was a mixture of green and red. He let out a cold huff. “What are these? Huaidong’s respect for my Tingting is worth far more than these trivial things…”
“That young man surnamed Gu hasn’t even shown his face yet. I think he’s not serious at all…”
As soon as the words left his mouth, a calm but powerful voice cut through the crowd. “Who said I’m not serious!”
The man stood against the sunlight, his crisp military uniform highlighting his tall, slender figure and lean waist, with lines as sharp as those carved by a cold wind. His presence was awe-inspiring.
The sheer pressure he exuded caused the whispers around him to instantly cease. People didn’t dare to breathe.
He strode through the crowd with a powerful aura, heading directly for Shen Sisi.
Upon seeing her, he immediately softened the intensity in his eyes. “I’m sorry, Sisi. I’m late.”
Shen Sisi’s heart skipped a beat. Seeing him safe and sound, she felt an urge to cry.
“Are you alright?”
He shook his head. “I’ll explain later…”
After calming Shen Sisi, Gu Chengfeng turned to face Chen Jianguo.
Under the brim of his hat, his face was cold and hard, his gaze as sharp as a blade. “Uncle, I’m late. You don’t mind, do you?”
Under his hawk-like gaze, Chen Jianguo shivered. His conscience was guilty, and he shook his head repeatedly. “N-no, I don’t mind! I’m glad you’re here…”
He then walked past Chen Jianguo with a somber expression, suppressing his anger, and forced a somewhat pleasant smile for everyone.
“Today, I, Gu Chengfeng, have come to propose to Comrade Shen Sisi. Please, have some wedding candy and share in our joy.”
With that, he took out several large bags of candy and handed them out, telling everyone to share.
At this moment, someone in the crowd recognized him.
“Gu Chengfeng? The bully of Lin County back in the day!”
“He actually joined the army…”
“And married a…” The word “used-up woman” was cut off by a deathly glare from Gu Chengfeng.
Gu Chengfeng’s face was grim. He forcefully tossed a bag of candy into the person’s hands. “The wedding candy can’t shut your mouth?”
The person shivered in fear and immediately fell silent.
Upon realizing this was Gu Chengfeng, people were hesitant to accept the candy. They all cast sympathetic glances at Shen Sisi.
A gentle, weak girl had married a ruthless brute. She was in for a life of suffering…
Gu Chengfeng finally found an opening and led Shen Sisi to the side, pulling a small box wrapped in brown paper from his clothes.
“I’m sorry. The car with the medicine broke down on the way. I went to help fix it, which is why I’m late.” He held the medicine in his cupped hands, presenting it to Shen Sisi like a child who had made a mistake. His voice was muffled and anxious.
Shen Sisi, however, didn’t even look at the medicine. Her eyes were fixed on his oil-stained fingers, and her heart tightened.
“Why are you apologizing? I’m the one who should thank you…”
She took the medicine and shoved it into her pocket. With her other hand, she pulled out a fragrant, freshly washed handkerchief and carefully began wiping his fingertips.
Gu Chengfeng reacted as if he’d been scalded by boiling water, his face turning bright red. “Don’t touch me. It’s dirty…”
Shen Sisi glared at him, full of reproach, and suddenly took his hand. “Don’t move!”
His gaze met her firm and serious face, and his heartbeat began to accelerate.
Shen Sisi was completely unaware, meticulously wiping each of his distinct fingers, her face tight with concentration.
He must have been unable to wait for the medicine, so he went looking for it himself.
She didn’t know how long he’d walked before he came across the broken-down vehicle.
He went to help fix the car, then rushed back here.
He didn’t even have time to wash his hands. He must be exhausted…
“You’ve worked so hard…” Shen Sisi said softly, not caring whether he heard her or not. She pulled him straight upstairs. “Come on, go wash your hands and eat…”
The meal was a mixture of different flavors.
Chen Jianguo was humiliated but dared not speak his mind. He just drank his liquor silently.
Zhao Shilan chewed her food with a grin, her face full of wrinkles, as if she had eaten honey.
Shen Sisi kept her head down, constantly putting food in Gu Chengfeng’s bowl, while trying to figure out how to return all the bride price items.
Looking at the small mountain of food in his bowl, Gu Chengfeng’s smile never faded. He ate two more bowls of rice than usual.
Only Niu Niu was carefree, like a curious child.
One moment, she was curiously touching the tape recorder, and the next, she was crawling under the sewing machine to play with the foot pedal.
She was having a grand time.
After the meal, Shen Sisi wanted to talk to Gu Chengfeng about the bride price.
Gu Chengfeng, however, stood up first and pulled out a brown paper envelope. “Auntie, Uncle, the bride price has been delivered, and the cash gift is ready. I’m taking Sisi with me now. The train leaves at 3 p.m., so we won’t be staying long.”
Zhao Shilan was stunned. “So soon?”
Gu Chengfeng glanced at Shen Sisi. Soon? He felt he had delayed long enough.
“My leave is over,” Gu Chengfeng said simply. He then urged Shen Sisi to pack, but she pulled him into a corner.
“Gu Chengfeng, you really don’t want these things back?”
He put a finger to his lips, getting closer to his little darling. “I told you, he won’t be able to keep anything that isn’t his.”
Shen Sisi didn’t know what he was planning to do, but she decided not to think about it. She would just trust him.
It was getting late. They had to hurry and pack to leave!
